Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In my car (2001 M5) you don't get pressure readings for each tire. You set the pressures you want then "train" the system. Then it a tire gets too low it senses it by the faster rotation of that wheel. I assume that is the ABS system you mention. I have not had a BMW with a true pressure system, but my C5 'vette had one at it worked well. Digital display of the pressure in each tire plus and alarm if one was too low. The sensors attached on the inside of the valve stem, I think. I know several folks had theirs ruined by ham fisted mechanics trying to dismount a tire for a change or flat fix. So you say "more likely" the DSC control module. The traction control light stays on as well, as does the ABS light. Does this confirm it's the DSC module? Are they expensive? Yes, the module is expensive, about $1000 IIRC, and they have a very high failure rate, so junk yard is not really an option. It's a french spec 11/85 production 325ia with high-compression engine. He's tried DME swapping but the outcome is still unknown. Is there a more conclusive test to correctly diagnose dead DME? Can we replace this with a US-spec DME? The ETK shows an option with a coded and uncoded DME, I was told you need a MODIC to code it. Can I recode a US DME to the proper settings if I had a MODIC? Brandon, I don't know if it's true for the E30 325ic, but for my E36 325ic there are *no* aftermarket springs available that maintain stock ride height. Turner and other vendors advised me that near-stock ride height aftermarket springs (Such as H&R OE Sports) for 325is applications would not sit right on the ic. I already had a set of Bilstein HDs that I couldn't return when I discovered that 3 of my stock springs were broken and ended up having to buy new springs from the dealer at about twice the cost of a set of H&Rs. Moral of the story: get Bilstein Sports or a comparable shock designed for lowering springs. Since you're looking for better handling and less body roll you'll want a lowering spring anyway. While you're in there replace the rear shock mounts with your choice of aftermarket RSM. The stockers are notorious for their short life. Brian '94 325ic -----Original Message----- From: "Brandon T. I figure it's about time to refresh some of the suspension components in my '93 325ic -- she just doesn't drive like she used to. I'm looking for suggestions of particular spring and strut/shock combinations that work well for the convertible. I autocross the car as well as use it for my daily driver, so I'd like something that improves the handling (less body roll, a bit crisper response, etc.) but doesn't make the ride too harsh. Perhaps an impossible request, but I thought I'd ask. I'd just be surprised if the stock set-up is really ideal. If you have any ideas, especially ones you've experimented with, I'd love to hear them. It looks like my '90 Eclipse GSX has finally worn out the engine at 15x,xxx miles. Since it doesn't really make sense to repair it, I'm considering buying a used '98 A4 2.8 Quattro. I would appreciate any input from list members that have experience with this model/vintage. >From the reviews I've read, most seem to love the car but many complain about poor reliability and high repair costs at the dealer (imagine that). I'd wouldn't mind getting a used '98ish 328i, but there don't seem to be many for sale in the area; and the ones that are must have gold bars in the trunk. Any other recommendations for a solid used 4-door (AWD a plus) other than the obvious Accord/Camry would be helpful. I was actually about 5 minutes away from leasing a new Camry when I had to deal with the lease manager(?), Randy something, at Butler Toyota here in Indianapolis. I had to walk out after he turned out to be one of the biggest a$$holes I'd ever met, save a certain insurance adjuster. It was either leave or clean off his desk, with him. (blood pressure rising - deep breath). Anyway. Turned out to be a rant as well as an OT, possibly a cross post too. Email jail here I come. Thanks for you help. To recap, car is a 1999 528i, speedo not working, ABS light on, ASC light on. I was poking around on the bimmerfest forum and found a huge writeup on this. It is supposedly the ABS sensor. Why this shuts down the speedo and ASC, I don't know. However, this EXACT problem was shared by many owners of 98 and early model 99 5 series BMW's. This was verified after I just received a call from the BMW dealership. They said the same thing, needs an ABS module, $1,200 parts and labor. So, I'm going to mess with this thing tomorrow. If you have a 98 or 99 E39, and this happens, this is most likely the problem. I did replace the left rear wheel speed sensor, and the sensor on top of the transmission. If any sensor on any wheel is bad, the system shuts down. The left rear wheel sensor controls the speedo along with the one on the transmission (I think), and the right rear wheel sensor modulates the cruise control, from what I read. Too many electronics on this things, if you ask me. Alex Cagann http://www.autoconsortium.com ------------------------------ End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(10 messages) **********
