My wife has a 00 Passat Wagon 2.8, which features the 30 valve Audi/VAG type
ATQ motor.

It calls for a 5W40 full synthetic oil, and Mobil 1 makes no such product,
but do have the 0W40.

I've been running that since taking ownership of the car 30k miles ago.
It's been through 1 Fargo, ND winter thus far and the engine was fine. Car
has 55k miles on it.

With regard to the above, Karl wrote:

Huh? Doesn't today's BMWs, especially the E60 545i and its V8
engine oil come from the *factory* with synthetic oil? In fact
its my understanding that BMW's synthetic oil is made by Castrol
(at least in the US). Or am I missing something? Brewster

I didn't realize I need to specify that the fatory uses synth as well now

Kevin,

What's the manual say?

Baring that, I think previous posts of many moon ago indicated that BMW
does a 30 minute run in on all engines at the factory else the 'bahn
stormers wouldn't be able to leave the show rooms and immediately hit the
stradas at 100mph.

BMW's factory run-in includes a cold-air non-ignition pump on normal engines
and a non-ignition hot pump on m-engines. I don't know the length of the
test, but it is meant as a test and not a run-in.

The actual ignition in the factory is also a test and not a runin (I've
watched it) -- basically they start it up, drive it a quarter mile on the
factory floor, run the engine to redline, test all the gears, test
emissions, and park it. They're pretty abusive, really. Again, nowhere
near a run-in.

The people at the delivery center in Munich made it clear:
 1 - do not top 100mph
 2 - do not exced 4500rpm
3 - vary speed and rpm
4 - make sure to take it up to 100mph repeatedly

I was happy to oblidge. In fact, following #1 was quite painful on the
autobahn.

The upper rad hose trick...
I usually use a piece of 2 to 2.5" iron plumbing and 2
sets of clamps on each end, but I think I could
splurge since I'm driving a BMW now and get a part
that doesn't look like crap!

I'll look for the Greddy part online.

One last question - Tom Wyatt, you also mentioned in
another email that you thought the sender in some late
model E36's might be useable, but I have a 1993 early
model E36.

In any case - has anyone ever replaced the stock water
thermo sensor with a dual VDO range (10-180 Ohm)
sender and run wires to both the stock gauge and an
aftermarket VDO gauge?

Thanks again,
Pete

Steve,

See that Viscosity Index parameter. It's one of the more important. The
higher the better. It's essentially the slope of viscosity change over
temp. It says that a high VI oil will not thicken as much at low temps nor
thin as much at high temps as an oil with a lower index. The reality is
that in normal everyday driving, you're not going to see much difference
between the first 4 oils in your table and Mobil1 synthetics are excellent
oils in general.
