Interesting tidbit in todays Motley Fools feed about Porsche talking with
Toyota about their Hybrid technology. Much more logical than hydrogen IMO.

Carlos,
Your reply highlights the difference between 'Inclusionary' (SCCA
type) versus Exclusionary (point based) classifying systems.
SCCA lists what is allowed in a given class. A mod outside of what's
written in the rules, without "frivolous interpretation", makes you not
legal. With point assessments you are told what you may not do. Since
that begins with a universal set of all possible mods, it needs to
specify what will get assessments. There's bound to be performance
advantages which fall between the cracks. The astute car builder will
seek them out.
My HFM tube example you commented onis clearly not stock legal for
SCCA. A larger HFM tube is an intake mod that is not _included in their
listed. But to a point system not stating it on the list of _excluded
items, it _would be legal.
My primary point of going to local autocrosses is to get out and
have fun with the car in a safe controlled environment with like minded
people in a friendly social setting. Maybe show off the power
improvement of the low budget mods. Winning a trophy or trinket, or
what class I end up in is unimportant. I only autocross infrequently so
personal interest in how the adjustable camber rule gets drawn up is
minimal.
From an engineering point of view I would assess negative camber by
these distinctions:
1. w/in stock spec.
2. outside spec/ no aftermarket components or drilling/cutting.
3. Aftermarket components or drilling/cutting, non-adjustable.
4. adjustable.
Since adjustability since it allows trackside changes that static
methods don't, I like the additional assessmetn for it.
Another posting questioned if three degrees can be had via static
means. It can be obtained by installing washers between the hub and the
lower strut tube mounting tabs (E36). Though that changes the scrub
radius more than by moving the top of the strut inward.
For autocross, an unregulated alternative to adding front negative
camber is abnormally low rear tire pressure. Its potential was
demonstrated by what Bob Tunnel did in a 318iS versus the Neons in SCCA
a few years ago.
Also, if static negative camber is assessed per degree rather than
'in spec' or 'out of spec', then toe out must also be assessed since
fast autocrossers frequently use outside of factory toe spec too.
Lastly, let the rule be whatever it is going to be, since even if
Scott's initial value is too high or low, sufficient event data will
show a more accurate assessment, and besides, how many others are
willing to put the time and effort into it that he does. Its an
evolving system, any assessment needs a starting point, and the rest of
the classing system is evolved enough that if one element is temporarily
over- or under- assessed it won't make a difference in the final
outcomes anyway.
my 02 cents worth,
Barry

That's what we do now. But there is such a thing as too much camber.
And half the people haven't been to an alignment rack since the mod,
and they don't know how much camber they're really running, so they
guess. That's what I'm trying to change.

Hello Folks,
I am considering purchasing a '92 525iT with 100k miles and a transmission
that "slips" according to the seller. My thought was to buy the car, limp
it home, and swap the trans for the new/used unit and have a nice e34 wagon
for relatively little money. The seller says there is no "TRANS PROGRAM"
message on the dash, but the trans slips in first so you cannot take off
very fast, but it does drive. Reverse, forward gears all intact.
Has anyone got any experience with buying a rebuilt or new trans for these
cars and having it shipped? Any good source for transmissions that I should
call if I do buy this car? Anyone out there think I am nuts for
contemplating this? Happy Thanksgiving to all. Thanks in advance for the
help.

We're shopping around for a replacement for my wife's 1988 MB 300E. It only
has 236K miles, but still...
We're not into SUVs but would like some cargo capacity, and we need a usable
back seat. A BMW wagon looks like a decent choice, but the 3 series is too
tight in back, so that leaves the 5 series. We might also consider an Audi,
since we're in NE Indiana and AWD wouldn't hurt.
A local friend who runs a high end auto body shop has a 2001 540iT with
sport package, cold weather package, snows on their own rims and, I believe,
pretty much everything else (e.g. Xenons with washers). It's a third car for
him with only about 25K miles, and is still under warranty. I've seen the
car around, but haven't actually looked at it yet. He bought it used in
Florida. It seems he might be interested in selling it, and I've made
arrangements to go an have a serious look, drive it, etc.
Knowing the owner I have every reason to believe that this car has been
taken car of fanatically. We haven't talked price yet, but I imagine
somewhere in the mid/high $30s. My wife isn't a car enthusiast, although
that doesn't mean she'd mind driving a nice car too much. Still, I'd
probably appreciate the sport package more than she will <g>
So my questions are:
- Stuff to look for on a 540?
- Known 540i weaknesses?
- Any other vehicles to consider?
Our price range is <$40K. It's likely that we'll keep this vehicle until it
dies, like the MB 300E. Although it'll be a company car, we don't want a
total maintenance black hole.

Neil,
There are a number of E39 specific headaches, none of them too serious.
Things like radiator necks, thrust arm bushings, missing pixels in the
display (partial coverage when out of warranty by BMW). The V8s have a
reputaion for going through cats. I suggest you join Don's E39 group and
talk to some of the folks on that list
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe39/. A very civilized list with
a low S/N ratio and a lot of good info.

Subject: M42 into a '91?

Sorry for the cross posting
Im looking for a car for my 18 yr. old daughter, Ive found a 91 318is w/
thrown rod, the owner says. We have settled on a price and Ill go up to get it
in a week.
Rather than rebuild that motor I was considering other options. I thought I
had a motor out of another is but that seems not likely to happen now.
I know of a M42 motor I think I can get reasonably. The questions are what are
the problems with the E36 4 cly. swap? I know its done often w/ the 6 cyl.
but Im not familiar with it done with a 4 cly.
Anybody help?
And, please no why not go on and do the 6 c yl? OK?
Thanks
Bill & Jess

ummm.. doesn't the late model E30 318i come with an M42 anyways?
E30 325i only had M20, E36 325i had M50, 52 etc .. but the late E30 318i got
the 'new' engine that continued into the E36
looking at the parts CD, E30 318i came with M10, M40, M42.. E36 318i had
M42, M44 ('95+)
the engine it shows for the E30 318i M42 has a different part# than the
engine for the E36 318i M42 so I don't know what that means

I have not used one personally, but they are made a
few miles from where I live and they are recomended
and installed frequently by Vaughn Motorsports, also
in Zionsville, IN.
You could probably give Vaughn Motorsports a call and
ask them what they think about the rads and then the
best price they'll give you on one (they sell them
also)...
Vaughn's number is 317-873-6632
