"Two nations divided by a common language." says it all. Different doesn't
necessarily mean better or worse... Great discussion, worthy of the
Balltown days.

Just a few things from a Brit viewpoint.

Forte is pronounced forty, there's no acute accent over the e.

Now that the apostrophe has escaped from the greengrocer's window it roams
free and unfettered throughout the English speaking world, I blame MTV and
Oz soap operas.

Bollocks is one of those useful words, verb or noun, can be used to convey
disapproval or approval when attached to a canine. Has been bowdlerised to
horlicks, not quite a homophone but close enough. Only used to express
disapproval in that case, "made a complete horlicks of that".

BM, universally recognised over here as a German car with a badge showing
blue and white quadrants. Roundels are red, white and blue concentric circles.

The only thing that really bugs this particular Brit (shows how irrational
pedants can be) relates to a past Seahawks QB. TV commentators always
referred to him as Craig, even though the name was spelt Krieg. What a
struggle! Still if that what he wanted to be called... It's probably one
of those traps set to catch out unwary foreigners. Anyone of you Murricans
care to speculate on how Cholmondeley, Featherstonehaugh or Menzies should
pronounced? The last one should be easy for anyone of Scottish extraction.

Er, make that war.

Memo to self. Write out fifty times "I must think twice before trying to
make translingual jokes."

I swore I was going to stay out of this. But your last sentence reminded me
of a destination pronunciation experience I had once in the Boston vicinity.

About 20 years ago <sigh> I was on my first business trip to Boston. I
needed to go to Worchester. Not knowing how to get there I asked for
directions from the hotel staff. She looked at me strangely, paused and
said "you must not be from around here it's pronounced Wooster." <duh>

Ok, so some days later I needed to go to Dorchester. Again not knowing how
to get to Dorchester I asked the same young lady for directions. Having
learned my lesson about Worchester I asked for directions to "Dooster".
That was met by uncontrolled laughter.

Therefore, I wouldn't even attempt how to tackle the places you mentioned.

Marco

165 would be the minimum I'd want to see. 175 seems to be average for a
used M50/S50US

I've been happy with the Fuzion (Bridgestone brand) ZRi tires I put on
my 328i last summer. They've given me pretty decent handling and low
noise for about 10k miles now. Tirerack has good prices on them.

Subject: [UUC] Quiet tire choices for E36 M3

I'm preparing to replace tires on my 95 M3. I'm not looking for the
highest
performance tires or winter tires, but I am looking for tires that won't
make me go any more deaf than my wife says that I already am. The Yoko
ES100s that I have now are getting noisier as they near the wear bars.
They
actually roar starting
at 30mph. I know that performance tires are prone to do this. But I'm
ready
to settle
for something without optimal performance, in order to have tires
that I can count on to be relatively quiet over their life. I'm using
the
M3 as a daily driver, putting around 20k miles on the odo annually,
usually
day trips
of 200 to 300 miles a day many times a month. No track time or
autocrossing.

I also don't want to spend a fortune on Michelins. Yeah, call me cheap,
but
the Pilot sports I had were noisy as well. I'm seeking recommendations
from
anyone who has found particular tires that fit these requirements. I'm
about a month or so away from making a decision.

Thanks.

I am not so sure you should be one giving advice on how to speak... Right
Kathy?

;-)

Although, I by no means should start throwing stones and have stayed
completely out of this discussion until specifically called out. Besides,
it is generally understood that us Midwesterners speak properly and are
usually the standard for national broadcasted spoken language due to the
lack of accent and other idiosyncrasies...

By the way, that would be Ohioans....

Later,

Rich - says "hite" although I am sure I make my share of mistakes, my
parents like to add the letter "R" to words like wash so it becomes "warsh".

I thought it was that newscasters were the standard by which
Midwesterners tuned their speech... seeing as how nobody talks to them
other than the TV people.

;-)))

1) Loving this thread.
2) Ducking from the slings and arrows of outraged Midwesterners.
3) Have been accused of having no accent whatsoever, although speaking
more rapidly than most can listen is often the sign of a Tri-State Area
East Coaster.

My pEt haTe is pEople wHO will MIX UpPer and LowEr case lEtTers in wRittEn
texT.

There's no more clear sign of an brainless idiot that one that hand writes
signs/notes/letters/etc with not only mixed upper and lower case within the
same word, but one of each of the same letter within the same word!!!!
LetTer, for example.

It drives me nuts, and it's not a new thing. A 60yr old receptionist at a
shop I used to work for did it on signs that were displayed for customer
consumption......

Lazy, stupid, pathetic, inexcusable, are a few comments that come to mind.
