I owned an '86 Ranger extended cab pickup with the 3.0 liter V6 and 4 speed
OD auto trans, which I bought used around 1995. The only thing I ever had
a problem with was the transmission. When I test drove the truck, I found
that the transmission was not shifting correctly, so I insisted on a clause
in the contract allowing me to have the transmission inspected, with the
dealer to either fix the transmission or refund my money if its condition
was not acceptible.

The transmission shop told me that there were likely two problems - a
solenoid was not working properly (because its innards were packed with
metal shavings from the parts of the transmission that wear out), and also
that there was some problem with the lock-up torque converter. The shop
owner showed me those parts from other Ford automatic transmissions that
they had rebuilt - they had done many. The rebuild estimate (in 1995
dollars) was $1000.

I told the dealer that they'd probably want to give me my money back. To
my surprise, they instead offered to pay for the rebuild. That told me
that, no matter how good a deal I thought I had gotten, I still paid too
much. They made enough money to rebuild the transmission and still make a
profit.

Anyway, I had the truck for about 4 years, it ran fine and served my needs
well. Of course, my needs did not include towing a heavy trailer or
hauling 2000 pound loads from Home Depot.

Maybe the aggravation of having to give you the money back, added to the
costs of restocking and reselling the pickup made the $1000 seem like a
reasonable deal. Plus the dealer might have been hoping to build some
goodwill for the future! Hate to think of you labouring under a
misapprehension for ten years. :-^)

Another thing. Why don't US pickup manufacturers fit dropsides to the
bodies? It makes loading awkward items and pallets so much easier. Must be
a styling thing...

Yes, I guess so. With the enormous sales probably only a very small
proportion ever get used for any real work. Like 4x4s.

Subject: <E36) Query - Air Bag Warning Light
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi All

My E36 air bag warning light comes on when the car is
first started and goes off only after having driven
for a mile or so. This happened after the front
fender
had been repaired by a body shop as a result of a
minor
fender-bender (some jerk's SUV backed onto my front at
a parking lot !)

Is this a serious problem or just a matter of
resetting the fault code ?

Cheers !

Henry

A few years back, I accidentally left the key on when I pulled the seat out
of my mother's 95 525i (replacing the automatic height adjust cable
mechanism). Even with the plug back in its mate, the light would stay on
for two minutes on startup.
The fault needed to be cleared at the dealer. $40 later, the light didn't
come on anymore.

This is kind of a mundane question, but I need to replace the front wheel
bearings in my '95 530 and I'm having a devil of a time finding a 46mm socket
to remove the axle nut. Any suggestions on where to buy one? Thanks.
