Every time this Oil/Filter thread comes out I like to post this:
        http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

My current practice is 10K synth-oil changes and 5K filter changes.

As someone else mentioned the lab analysis for $20 is worth your peace
of mind.

Hey all,

Just wondering about general practice with oil filters on other E36s:
does everyone else who does 5k-6k mi synth oil changes run their filters
for the whole 5k miles or do you change halfway through?

Thanks,
Brian

Pharko,

In fact, for the most part synthetic does equate to cleaner oil. The
natural viscosity range of the base consituents and abscence of parafin
waxes and other gunk shall we say, allows for a higher volume of additives
and less viscosity modifiers. The ability of the oil to therefore scavange
and hold impurities in suspension is improved.

Naaah naaah ...naaah naah nah.

My mother-in-law's 2nd Ford Windstar is having its transmission redone
at 100k.just like the first one. My father-in-law has declared that this
is it for minivans in their stable. He has asked for my suggestion as to
a nice BMW for them to have and do some light traveling in and to get
her back and forth to work. Her commute is 20 minutes each way on
uncongested back country roads as they live in the sticks. Nothing
against the sticks, I like it there and wouldn't mind living there but I
couldn't do what I currently do there. Anyway.. I saw where some folks
were getting low 20s for mileage out of their E38s a while back and
wanted a little fresher info on what these things get in the real world.
My in-laws have finally seen the light and realize that BMWs only seem
expensive when you think you are going to get the same amount of utility
out of them as an American car. I know.I know there are plenty of
examples of American cars out there that last a long while but
unfortunately they haven't owned any of them except for their pick up
trucks. Hey.I have my own hand me down 79 C10 Chebby with a 305 in it
that I think is great for runs to Home Depot and the dump. Plus with the
bigger than stock off road tires on it when the occasional snow has
fallen it's perfect for heading out and seeing who is in the ditch. But
when they look at our 93 525iT with 256k on it on the original tranny
and motor or my track rat 92 325i with 186k (the last 50k being really
wrung out of it) they see a little more value in the BMWs now. Slowly
but surely I am converting everybody I know into propeller heads. 7
heathen shown the light to date.

Thanks

My 740i Sport gets about 22 MPG. Please keep in mind two points:

1) My car has a different differential than standard (3.15:1 vs. 2.82:1).
Therefore a 740iL equipped with a standard diff will turn a few less
revs/mile on the highway which should result in somewhat gas mileage

2) Approx. 80 - 90% of the miles driven on my car are on the highway (many
trips of 100 miles or more one-way). In mostly in-town driving - gas
mileage would probably drop a bit.

Hey Ryan,

Just curious about your 92 325i. I have one also and had to get a rebuild on
the tranny at 80K miles. And I never track it or abuse it. Just plain ole
street miles and never any abuse. Did all the inspections right on schedule
too. Funny thing about it is I found out this particular tranny is a GM
slushbox made in France! I didn't particularly want a slushbox when I was
looking but the price was right and mileage was really low....45K in Jan 2000
when I bought it from the local dealer. I've put another 40K on the rebuild
and it's still going strong so not complaining just curious about another same
year and if you have the same tranny.

All, I bought a brake kit from TMS that included ss brake lines. I never
installed them, and have since sold the car. I put them up on ebay, and have
posted a link to the auction below. Not a lot of action at this point, so
possibly a good chance to get yourself some brake lines for cheap.
