Speaking of old BMW's, I would love a very nice E28 with a stick for my daughter, if someone has one. She will hate it when she sees it (she is soon to turn 16...these aren't sexy in today's youth...personally, it is one of my favorite body styles ever done by BMW), but will soon love it, as we all love our BMW's. My friend has an 86 528i with over 300k miles on it, and it still runs perfect. No engine ever replaced, nothing but normal maintenance. The damn thing also gets around 30mpg. BMW built some darned good cars in the 80's, if you ask me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 07:39:27 -0500 From: "Karl Zemlin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: <WOB> in praise of the E28 (was: Converting one family member one car at a time) Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I sold a nice 535i a few years back and also have some regrets. I really needed the cargo space of a touring and don't have the time/space/money to keep two old cars going. The E34's a nice car ... But if I could have bought an E28 touring, I would have. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kevin Jay (Mr.Fabulous) Sent: Monday, October 30, 2006 2:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [UUC] <WOB> in praise of the E28 (was: Converting one family member one car at a time) The big-motor E28 is the finest and best-looking car BMW has ever made (and I never should've sold my '83 533i) Talk amongst yourselves - k --- original message --- From: "Alex Cagann" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Converting one family member one car at a time Good story. The motor is out and access is easy, but I cannot get the two wiper mounting studs out of their respective holes at the same time. The back of the fan housing interferes with the assembly. Unless I either drop the whole heater core or chop the fan housing it doesn't look like it's coming out without use of the "Torch". Also, what's the secret for getting the center ball joint of the front control arms to release from the subframe? -Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it. Or, do what a southern shop did to a car I saw many years ago. Use a sawzall to cut the old transmission in half for removal, then give up trying to install then new unit, even after cutting half the fire wall out. Worst part of that job is the only problem the car had was a loose nut on the driver's wiper arm. As to the centre ball joint, hit the base of the joint with a hammer a few times and it will usually drop out. Leave the nut on the top of the stud, so that the control arm doesn't hit you in the face on it's way to the floor. My history with BMWs is entirely E28: first was a '80 528i, second '84 533i, then the current '85 and '87, all 5spds. The 533i was my favorite, and I'd still have it if a 70-year-old had pulled out in front of my wife on a country highway. She t-boned him, totalled both cars. I bought that car from the original owner(doctor's wife), with 65k on it for $8500. It looked like it had just come out of the showroom(always garaged, all service records), and I planned to have it a LONG time, instead of just 100k. Our 535is is Royal Blue Metallic/Parchment. Looks great, with16" MSW rims. It does have some cosmetic issues, as the PO left it out in the sun all the time, so the upholstery on the front sport seats is toast, and the dash looks like a volcanic lava flow hit it. Other than that, drives GREAT. A lot of fun. I almost picked up an M5 a few years ago, but..........I need to put my money into refurbishing my real toy, my '65 Porsche 356 SC Coupe. Not a lot of power, but more fun than I need. :-) Now I just need to decide what to do with the BMW. Mark Alex Cagann wrote: >Personally, I would leave the headliner to an upholstery shop. I've just applied some Elmer's glue with a plastic knife to the edge of the headliner and held it in place for 20-30 seconds. It's holding so far.
