I seem to have stirred up a hornets nest, my apologies.

I feel a certain responsibilty for all this, so I ask everyone to please be
respectful of each other and don't allow this and off-shoot threads to turn
into something ugly.

If I spoke out of turn I am sorry. I feel I have based my decision on what I
perceive as valid points in this circumstance, I also feel that I may have
expressed my reasoning in a more tactful manor so as not to have stirred up
such strong responses.

I will say that things are built to a specification set out by whomever is
marketing the end product. If the specifications are good and not solely based
on price and the product is made to spec, any country or company can make a
very good product. My decision was not based entirely on country of origin,
more on what I perceived as a better product. For my poor sister and old mum's
sake, lets hope it is a good choice.

Again, I have no feelings of malice nor are these comments offending me, I just
don't want this to escalate too far.

My only hope is that my judgment and my lift are good...if you all stop hearing
from me, send flowers:-)

David Ellsworth, the trouble maker in Richmond, VA.

More like wasps nest, the human kind. This thread brings to mind
the joke about a world where the bicycles are all Italian, police all
British, cars and mechanics all German, versus cars all Italian, police
German, and bicycles British, or something like that.
Don't let it get to you, those who would criticize you are the type who
believe the President should swear on the constitution to uphold a bible
instead of the other way around too.

This is the one I've seen:

"Heaven is where the Police are British, the Chefs are French, the Mechanics
are German, the Lovers Italian and it's all organized by the Swiss.
Hell is where the Chefs are British, the mechanics are French, the lovers
are Swiss, the Police are German and it's all organized by the Italians."

I had my new BendPak sp-7x installed last week.
Can't see why it can be called crap. Works as advertised, quiet, nice welds,
very solid.
Pneumatic safety locks. Installer didn't have any problems.

The only issue we had during install is that one side was leaking. It was
fitting that we gave another turn and all is good.

I think BendPak have parts made in Asia and assembled here.

Anyway, I'm happy so far.

I couldn't have asked for a nicer accidental compliment!

We use Nussbaum and Rotary. Really nice lifts.

Two questions,
1) if one opens the A/C system to replace the compressor let's say, then
the drier should also be replaced correct? But how is this done without
exposing the new drier to atmosphere? Do the coupling connections have
pierce a foil or soft metal seal on the new drier?

2) How do you determine that only the magnetic clutch is bad on the
compressor?

Thanks, Kevin

In the old days, a receiver dryer included a bag of desiccant which
absorbed moisture, but could break and contaminate the system as well as
block the orifices.

Now, that drying function is provided by a rock placed in the dryer. For
the few seconds the pressure of the nitrogen which is in it for shipping
is gone and before a vacuum is drawn on the system for filling it with
refrigerant, some moisture might get in, but it would be minuscule and
would be removed by the vacuum process.

I have successfully reused receiver/dryers in my M5 when an exact
replacement could not be found, to no ill effect.

A dryer can be regenerated by heating it with a heat lamp while a vacuum is
pulled in the system.

I forgot one other question. The drier on the 328 does not appear to have a
sight glass. There is a brass extension on the top of the can. Is this the
sight glass? If so, I don't see how bubbles will be visible with this
approach.

Symptoms which illicit the questions are an intermittent operation and
occasional noise from the compressor area.
