That seems to be a great spot for filming lift-throttle oversteer. The Bimmers wagged around a lot, the Benz just went off straight, but all the really entertaining moments were provided by ass-motor types - many with swing-axles. Lots of VWs, Fiat 850s, NSU Prinzes, etc. That gaggle of 02s - was it the BMW school or some kind of test? I have to admit to being impressed with how well the VWs especially the Bugs hold up to rollovers. Also how well the occupants held up given that seatbelt use seemed to be rather sparse. The occupants of that Bug convertible get the 'There but for the grace of God go I' award. John. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 10:13:06 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Vintage Footage of 2002s on the Ring Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have to agree with Jay, the VW cabrio passengers must have christened that ride with "brown stains of approval" (along with the motorcycle driver hehe). What fools. That blue Fiat or Alpha at about 2'50'' into the video was a graphic illustration of how much better our cars are today. Both doors flew open and proceeded to crumple and take out the B pillar during their glorious death. That 411VW driver seemed to be one of the few who knew how to handle his rear engine pendulum. -Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it. My first thought was "here's a vivid example of how far tire technology has come." But then I found it all the more interesting that a number of the cars were turning turtle on the pavement, not caught in the off-road dirt. That's more likely a combination of factors, soft sidewall/tall profile tires flopping over, narrow wheels that provide a high psi of contact to catch, and high ride height/soft suspension boingo-ing the chassis attitude sideways. That motorcyle rider may have needed to see a proctologist to have the vinyl removed from his pucker. The Beetle driver thrown out of the door and saved from being run over by his own car by the luck of the dirt stopping the car? Priceless. The Beetle cabrio driver must have found himself immediately lonely. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jay Kenty" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2007 9:07 PM Subject: Re: [UUC] Vintage Footage of 2002s on the Ring > I love the VW convertible with three passengers- who probably regret > their decision to trust that driver... > Jay Kenty > RI > > Kevin Kelly wrote: > > Great vintage super 8 footage of Germans (includign some in 2002s) > > going too fast on the ring: > > > > http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=640695539059738855&hl=en-GB > > > > Kevin Kelly > > Search the > > ARCHIVES:http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] > > > > > > __________________________________________________________________________ > > > > In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. > > > > UUC Motorwerks - BMW Performance Fine-tuning and home of the Ultimate > > Short Shifter - accept no substitutes! > > 908-874-9092 . http://www.uucmotorwerks.com > > > > Search the ARCHIVES:http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] > > > __________________________________________________________________________ > In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. > > UUC Motorwerks - BMW Performance Fine-tuning and home of the Ultimate > Short Shifter - accept no substitutes! > 908-874-9092 . http://www.uucmotorwerks.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 10:28:33 -0400 From: "Gary Derian" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Vintage Footage of 2002s on the Ring Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In those days, many considered those cars to be the "good handling European cars". They all have swing axles and high roll center semi-trailing arm rear suspensions. Fun stuff. Gotta love seeing an old 412 VW Wagon out there on the 'ring. Takes me back. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 10:17:09 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: adhesives Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Roland, I'd go with Gary and Karl on this one. If the tape is the 3M VHB series or equivalent, it should be effective. -Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it. The goo will flex. They use that tape to hold skins on busses and all kinds of stuff - the good tape is good stuff. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of roland beaudette Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 5:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [UUC] adhesives Thanks for all the suggestions. What I started to say yesterday before my office was flooded (5 inches of rain in 45 minutes) is that the BMW lip spoilers come with a strip of double sided 3M adhesive foam tape for mounting. I bought one for my 330i, stuck it on and it was very solid. If you don't like the tape that came with your spoiler, most auto parts stores sell a double sided clear rubber 3M tape that sticks like no other tape I have used.
