The iPhone really is as good as everyone is saying. Even better in some ways. Buy a raffle ticket. NOT Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> First, two responses to yesterday's mailings: [1] I buy parts online (Pelican, alloembmwparts, others) because they ship to my door, and [2] I replaced both my fan and clutch last year (I could hear the clutch had gone bad, and so long as I had it apart I did the fan too). I still cannot explain how/why the fan failed... but Pelican tells me I'm entitled to warranty refund (cool). SO... here's the rest of the story. I posted a question about locating vacuum leaks a few days ago because my idle had suddenly gotten a bit lumpy. Sort of. Car shook juuuuuuuuuuust a bit. Rhythmically. And I could still feel it if I gave her a little gas (through maybe 1500rpm). Thought maybe I'd grown a vacuum leak. Took the fan out yesterday to attempt the Gary Derian burn-your-house-down leak locator test. Either it doesn't work, or I don't have a vacuum leak (I believe the later). House is still standing. And along the way (and totally by accident), I discover I'm missing a fan blade (which I happen to have found a few days, maybe weeks, ago laying in my driveway, didn't know what it was). Replaced the fan this afternoon (locally, and I *hate* having to drive to the dealer for parts, the internet has spoiled me). I never would've imagined this, but I believe that with replacing my busted fan, I've also found and eliminated the source of my "lumpy idle". Car no longer shakes at idle. I wouldn't have thought this possible, but I do believe the out-of-balance fan was shaking the car hard enough for me to feel it. Guess I'm just a sensitive guy. I still do think my VANOS is rattling; any thoughts on that would be helpful. - Kevin Jay '96 328is, red/tan, 102K, usual H&R/Bilstein setup, a few M3 parts too '02 X5 3.0, white/tan, 66K, bone stock ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Jul 2007 22:23:28 -0400 From: KMS- Brett Anderson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Kevin Jay (Mr.Fabulous)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, UUC Digest <[email protected]> Subject: Re: <WOB> lumpy idle... No question the fan was causing the rough idle. We see it all the time. First thing we check on a rough idle complaint. Interestingly, it doesn't usually cause a misfire fault on an OBDII car, where bad tyres can. I bought a 750 on ebay that everyone was scared of because the seller said they couldn't get it running on all 12. He figured it was misfiring on 1 or 2 cylinders. He claimed he'd paid his mechanic a bunch of money to try and find the problem and they'd been unable to. He did note that the water pump had been changed a few days before. Turns out his idiot mechanic took a broken fan off the old water pump and put it back on the new pump. I flew in to Boston to pick up the car, borrowed a wrench, spun the fan off, threw it in the trunk and drove home with perfect running 90K mile 750.
