I've put high resolution pics up in the album:

http://picasaweb.google.com/peterloron/M3Head

The head gasket and block surface look great.

My dad put the VANOS back together last time following the directions in
the 101 Projects book. It's possible that the idle issues are VANOS, but
aside from the rough idle, the engine runs good...power is there and it
is smooth. No VANOS codes in the OBD system.

As far as I know, the head was pressure tested cold. I'm going to be
contacting the shop today to check into hot testing.

If the white crap on the head is an indication of a problem, then it is
systemic since all cylinders are affected. I'm struggling to understand
how a leak in the block or head would affect all chambers like that.

I'm trying to decide what to do at this point. My choices seem to be:

1. Put a new head on it and hope that the issue is the head. If it's the
block, then I've just wasted money on the gasket and at least some on a
new head.

2. Put a whole new engine in there. If the problem was in the head, then
I've just wasted $2K+.

Unfortunately my dad and I don't have time to tear the engine apart and
rebuild it with a donor block.

Sorry for the cross post but, if anyone has a Bentley for an E36 they want
to part with, I'd pay a fair price plus shipping.

That is exactly what I thought when I saw the message subject line in
outlook...and still..even a second or so after I read the body of the
message. I thought...he wants someone to trade him a Bentley for an older 3
series???? LOL.

I recall someone looking for a cheap E36 325 or 318 for a family member last
week. This was posted on another list:

There's no better way to get to know a new car than an epic
transcontinental road trip.
