That is to say, is the intended torque more than 20% of full scale? IIRC, those are M8 nuts and bolts at about 15 ft-lb so if you're using a 10-75 ft-lb wrench you're right at the lower end of the accuracy of the wrench. I used my in-lb wrench and to my knowledge, the gaskets are still going strong 4 years after (sold the car to a local friend). Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I use a 1/2" strain gauge from Sears which I no longer see on their site. Specs of +/- 1.5% up to 50 ft.lbs. and 3% from 50-150 ft.lbs It goes inline between your socket and the wrench. It works pretty well from zero to 150lb/ft. The only thing I can't use it on is the crank bullnose. That needs 300lb/ft. I borrowed a torque wrench that was 4ft long for that one ;-) They have this listed now http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947712000P?vName=Tools&keyword=to rque+wrench Marco -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Andy Messer Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2007 6:10 AM To: 'Brad'; [email protected] Subject: Re: [UUC] E30 M20 intake gasket problems. >Is there something i'm doing wrong installing them? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Brad, A few easy things.... 1. Did you make sure the mating surfaces are clean and flat? Scrapes or leftover crap are not good of course. 2. I haven't previously but you could also use a hylomar type sealant additionally. Although I think this would be a bandaid covering some other problem. 3. Are you sure the plenum is seated and properly supported? Seems like maybe something is in the way such that maybe the plenum is not able to seat properly. Then even though they are torqed, it's not torqed on the gasket as much as possibly some other obstruciton. Cheers. My method of installation was to clean the manifold and the head surfaces carefully with a flat razor blade and brake cleaner, install the new gaskets and torque from the center of the manifold out towards each end. I tried a new procedure on my buddies 325iX which added Hylomar Aviation Form-A-Gasket on the head side of each gasket in addition to the steps mentioned above. He sold the car to a friend who so far has had no failures in at least 60k since replacement. I also did this to my last E30 during the second replacement, however it was sold with only ~8k on the job so I don't know how it held up. Is there a better way? I too am curious. I blew another set of intake gaskets on my 325ix, always the front gasket, for some reason i'm only getting about 30,000 miles out of a set. Is there something i'm doing wrong installing them? This will be my 3rd set since the car turned over 170,000 miles, it now has 230,000 on it.
