Okay, while a lot of people have heard that the Atkins diet is "bad" for
you, does anybody ever talk about the fact that these "studies" were all
done considering only the Induction Phase of the diet, that at most a
person on the Atkins diet is only supposed to stay on the Induction for
2-3 weeks?

What pisses me off is that people who poo-poo the diet (and I have
spoken to many) rarely have ever head about the Maintenance Phase (Phase
3) or for that matter even Phase 2.

A balance between carbs and protein and fat and etc. where no weight
loss occurs.

Phase 1 (Induction) starts the body on a quick weight loss track.
generally people lose 10-15 pounds here. (diet < 20g Carbs per day)
Phase 2 On-going: increase the amount of carbs gradually over time until
you reach a weight loss of about a pound a week. Do this until you are
at your goal weight.
Phase 3 Maintenance. Increase your carb intake until your weight loss
stops. You should be at your goal weight now and eating carbs, protein etc

Phase 3 is very similar to Weight Watchers and a number of others.

Oh and FWIW, Atkins also stressed that exercise was a good part of any diet.

I lost 40 pounds on the Atkins diet over a period of 6 months. I have
kept the weight off for 3 years. on the maintenance plan. My blood
pressure is low, my cholesteral is great. My doctor has recommended that
I continue to keep on my present diet.

What have I done wrong that I'm not dead yet?
