Where are you getting 3/16" plate from? The requirements state 14 gauge
(0.078") thickness for the gussets not 0.1875" for Formula Car Roll Cage
bracing.
That was a bit of overkill on my part. I read somewhere that 3/16 was needed
for some such thing.
The hoops themselves do not need to be gusseted if they go all
the way to the bellypan. If they do not they need to be gusseted to the
member to which they attach. And then you should run something to the
lower frame rail.
I'm not sure what sentence # 2 and 3 mean.
The gussets themselves as referenced before are for the forward braces
and their attachment points to the frame/roll hoops. I'm not too sure
which question you're asking.
Man am I glad I started asking questions here. In section 9.4.5 of the GCR
it talks about gussets and braces. Apparently I'm misinterpreting.
Section C. Roll Cage Bracing
1. The main hoop must have two forward braces extending from the hoop and
attached to the frame, monocoque, or front hoop. Braces must be attached as
near as possible to the top of the hoop but must not be more than six (6)
inches below the top and at an included angle of at least thirty (30)
degrees.
-----"If these braces do not extend to the front hoop, an additional brace
or gusset (14 gauge - .078" minimum thickness) must be installed between the
lower frame rail and the upper frame rail at the point of attachment of the
forward hoop brace. If these braces do not extend to the front hoop, an
additional brace or gusset must be installed at the point of attachment to
the main rear hoop or lower frame rail or other major frame member in such a
manner as to reinforce the attachment point to help prevent collapse of the
frame rail at the point of attachment." -----
I read it to mean that I need gussets between the hoops and frame rails. Am
I reading the wrong thing? Or misinterpreting?
So per your 10 degrees of rear lean the front brace would have to be a
minimum of 40
degrees off of vertical.
To clarify, is that 40 degrees off vertical or 40 degrees off the main hoop?
KBS/Invaders both have
slight bends in the forward bracing and another brace that intersects
the forward facing brace. We've done the same thing although we've moved
things around to make them a bit stiffer and provide more protection.
I could make all this work with three bends in each brace, but they would
probably be more than slight bends.
I've got an old Zink that I'm playing around with and learning lots.
Additionally if you're anywhere near SE Michigan you
can stop by and take a look at our new chassis for ideas/inspiration.
That's a good idea. I'm about an hour NW of Detroit. Where are you,
exactly? I'd love to take a drive down and talk face to face, but I'm
afraid I will have some issues at the border crossing, since I am from
Canada, and in the next couple of days I'm going to become seriously
radioactive and will remain so for the next month or more.
So now you all know that you are taking part in my therapy. Thankyou. All of
you! This f-500 stuff is keeping me very nicely occupied, and stopping me
from going NUTS!
