But the problem only occurs when Growl is turned off.

Your original email, plus the implication that you keep Growl turned  
off, suggests you don't really want to use Growl. Why not remove it?  
Adium doesn't require it except for Growl notifications; all of its  
other features will keep working just fine without it.

To remove Growl, open System Preferences, right-click on Growl, and  
choose “Remove ‘Growl’ preference pane”.

Adium may ask you again, the next time you run it, whether you want to  
install Growl. Say no this time, and tell it not to ask you again.
