Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at
6.30pm. I’ll have all the day’s news and tonight on the programme, I'll be
investigating the claim that ferry staff in Hull are saying that they can't
deal with the expected thousands of football fans travelling to Germany for the
World Cup. We’ll be looking at whether these security fears are valid and
what’s being done about it. I’ll have the full story later on the programme.

Also tonight, I'll be looking into why holes are appearing in the roads of a
North Lincolnshire village. Apparently manhole covers are being sold for their
scrap value - can you believe it? This is an incredible tale isn’t it? Local
residents are concerned for their safety and for the safety of their children
and pets with these exposed holes in their roads. I’ll have more on this later.

One viewer has been in touch with Look North with a Leave it to Levy for me.
He’s asking me to help model boat owners in East Park, who are fed up with pond
weed in their lake. This weed is getting wrapped up in their boat engines and
they’re fed up with it. I’ll be seeing if I can help them out with this problem.

And do you remember this story? One year ago, Julia Buckley from Lincoln was
threatened with eviction because of her untidy garden. Well, it appears her
untidy ways are a thing of the past and now she's hoping to win the council's
Best Kept Garden award. Find out if she has! And of course, Paul will be here
for the full forecast.

X Factor

Thanks for all the emails asking if I can get Lucy Benjamin on the programme.
She was the winner of the talent show for celebrities, the X Factor. She seems
to be hugely popular with readers of the Levy Letter and why not? The former
Eastender says that she has no intention of launching an attack on the pop
charts after winning, despite a flood of offers and that’s quite refreshing
news isn’t it? Lucy’s thirty five by the way and is three months pregnant and
is planning to concentrate all her efforts on being a great mum. Given that she
is going to concentrate on her family and has no connection with our part of
the world, or at least if she has, then I don’t know about it, then I think
there’s little chance of getting her on the show. But isn’t it a breath of
fresh air that Lucy Benjamin, although being the winner of the X Factor, isn’t
going to launch a pop career? But congratulations to her for winning the
celebrity X Factor and all the best to her family!

Husky Voice

Career driven women are lowering their voices to get ahead in the work place
and gain acceptance in a society that is still male dominated, according to a
study. Researchers claim that ambitious women are increasingly adopting the
husky tones of stars such as Mariella Frostrup and also Kathleen Turner, so as
to compete with their deep-voiced male counterparts. Have you ever heard of
anything so ridiculous as this? A comparison of women’s voices between 1945 and
1993 reveals that they deepen significantly in the second half of the century.
During that time the average pitch of women aged eighteen to twenty-five is
lowered by twenty-three hertz. That’s an equivalent to a semi-tone drop. So
there you are. Women are talking deeper so as to do better in the work place.
I’ve never heard so much drivel.

Stories

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a story that you think would be interesting to
cover on the programme and also if you’ve got a problem that you think we might
be able to sort out, then get in touch. Just like the model boat owners in East
Park for our Leave it to Levy tonight, send me an email and get in touch with
me. And like those boat owners, you might be able to get some help from me with
your problem. Get in touch and send me the details and don’t forget to include
a contact telephone number as well. It’s the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you’ve been taking any good pictures recently on your digital cameras, then
send them in to me. If you’re proud of them, then I’m sure you’d love to see
them on the Big Screen on the programme. So get in touch!

Women After Fifty

Well, they’re meant to be enjoying the prime of their lives, but women in their
fifties are finding themselves battling a problem that many of them don’t want
to talk about. This is according to a new report just out. Three out of four in
this age group believe their sex drive has dwindled with a third of them just
making love once a month or less, according to this study. And they’re not
happy about it either. Most claim that they would be delighted if their sex
life went back to the way it was before they went through the menopause, but a
third said that they would be far too embarrassed to ever discuss it even with
their doctor. A survey also showed that their partners could be part of their
problem. Around 40% of British women, the highest rate in the study of European
countries, said their partners had lost their sexual desire as well. So there
you are. Men in their fifties are losing their sexual desire as well, but no
one wants to talk about it, even to their doctor.

Mablethorpe

I’ll give you the full details next week, but there’s a date for the diary, if
you’re in the Lincolnshire area and a reader of the Levy Letter, on a Sunday
night. It’s the switching on of the Mablethorpe lights. And if you fancy coming
along, then I’ll give you the full details with the time and the date next
week. But Paul and I will be there to switch on the lights. It’s the big social
event of the year on the East coast, so I’m told and we would like you to be
there. So more details coming up next week in the Levy Letter.

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good day and look after
yourself. Join me tonight on BBC One at half past six!

Take care,

Peter
