Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to the start of another week on the Levy
Letter. I hope your weekend was good and I hope you’ll be able to join me
tonight at half past six, of course, for today’s Look North. If you missed the
little man, then Paul is back after his week off tonight.

Also on the programme tonight, I'll be talking to the parents, who live in
Hull, but refuse to send their children to the schools of Hull. Victoria Dock
was promised a school of its own, but now the council are going back to the
drawing board as they set up a commission to reinvestigate the issue of
secondary schools in the area. I’ll have more on that later.

Plus I'll be looking at why school children from Lincoln are returning
desperately disappointed after their dreams of watching the World Cup have been
shattered. They were sold fake tickets for the games in Germany and now
twenty-five children are having to return to England. You can imagine how
disappointed they all are. Well, I’ll be asking how this could happen and how
these fake tickets came to be on the market. I’ll have the full story later.

Tonight on the programme, I'll be hearing the concerns of parents in Lincoln.
Yesterday, the Home Secretary banned child sex offenders from a hostel in the
city, but the parents of the area are asking why these sex offenders were
placed there in the first place. I hope you can join me for that one.

Plus we'll be looking at the illegal traveller encampments in Southern
Lincolnshire and asking whether new laws will help manage them. And I’ll have
the exclusive pictures of the ducklings that survived the odds thanks to caring
children in Hull. So a busy show to start off the week. I hope you can join me
tonight on BBC One at half past six.

Lincolnshire Show

It’s a busy week this week, because it’s the Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday. I
believe it’s the 122nd! I think I’ve been to most of them as well! 122nd
Lincolnshire Show - Paul and I will be there all day on Wednesday and the
programme will be coming from there live. There’s going to be a lot of BBC
personalities there as well, so I’m led to believe, as well as the usual stalls
and attractions. So if you can join me and make it down to the showground, then
I look forward to seeing you. That’s Wednesday at the Lincolnshire Showground.
If you can’t make it down, then I hope you can tune in and the programme will
be coming from there live.

Honours

The Queen’s birthday honours list has been published. As you probably know, if
you read about it at the weekend, Rolf Harris has clearly impressed the one
person who counts. Well, he painted the Queen didn’t he? She’s given him a CBE,
so presumably that means that she likes his picture. He’s seventy-eight now.
Also getting an award is Esther Rantzen and Darcey Bussell, the ballerina.
Beverley Knight becomes an MBE and also the man, who founded EasyJet, Stelios
Hajioannou, becomes Sir Stelios after being knighted for his services to
entrepreneurship. So there you are. Those are some of the people, who have been
awarded in this year’s birthday honours list.

Birthday

Are you about to celebrate your 25th birthday? Were you born on July 17th 1981?
Or were your children or grandchildren born on that day? Or is your birthday
close to that date? If so, then please get in touch. I would love for you to
have a chat with one of our producer’s, Caroline Le Beau. She’s preparing some
special features all about the 25th birthday of the Humber Bridge and she’d
like to speak to you if you share a birthday with the Bridge! Email her
directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED], because she’d love to hear from you. And we
could be featuring you on Look North! I hope we hear from you soon if your
birthday is on or near the 17th July 1981.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture or a photograph that you’ve taken recently
in our part of the world that you’re particularly proud of, then I’d love to
see it. We show one picture a night on the programme. Then please send it to
me. If you want you can send me a hard copy in the post or electronically to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Education

The devastating scale of poor English and Maths skills amongst adults was laid
bare recently. Almost half of the working population lack the numeracy skills
expected of a fourteen year old. I’ll say that again… half of the working
population lack mathematic skills expected of a fourteen year old. So says the
Education Secretary, Alan Johnson. Fifteen million adults would not scrape the
lowest G grade in the subject at G.C.S.E., because they’re not properly
numerate. Another five million cannot read according to Mr Johnson. The sheer
scale of the problem reflects decades of failures at schools. That was the
story that has made the papers this week. But that’s frightening statistics
isn’t it?

A Musical Revolution

If singing in the shower really isn’t your style, then this could be the
perfect gadget. It’s not April the 1st is it? It’s called the ICarter. It
combines a portable music player and also a lavatory paper dispenser. It allows
you to listen to your favourite tunes in the comfort of your own bathroom. It’s
merging an Ipod docking station with a dispenser and its design, according to
the manufacturers, is to enhance your experience in the smallest room. In other
words, you get your toilet paper off it and you can put your Ipod on the socket
at the top and it plays all your favourite music. You can then relax and enjoy
the music. As I say, it’s not April the 1st is it? It’s called an ICarter and
I’m not quite sure why it’s called that. But if you’ve got an Ipod and you
spend a lot of time in the loo, then you know what to do!

That’s it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC One at half past six as
usual and look out for your Levy Letter again tomorrow.

Take care, all the best,

Peter
