Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.
It’s another lovely day today. Paul will have the forecast tonight at half past
six.

And also tonight, I'll have reaction to the news that Hull KR will face St
Helens in the Challenge Cup semi final. The team is doing so well recently and
of course Look North will be following their successes. Good luck to the team
for that one.

The big event of the year for Lincolnshire is coming up – the Lincolnshire
Show! I'll be investigating the row that's seeing some food producers boycott
the Lincolnshire Show this year. I’ll have more on that one later.

And, we’ve got the story of the latest technology hitting our schools. We'll be
visiting a school in Lincolnshire, where the classroom register is a thing of
the past. Pupils in this school start their day by scanning their fingerprints.
Will it help make our children safer in schools? Well, find out tonight when
I’ll have the full story.

I'll have a Leave It To Levy for you tonight where I'll meet disgruntled model
boat owners in East Park and my special guest will be David Griffin. He plays
the long suffering Emmet in Keeping Up Appearances and he's coming to Lincoln
shortly. Plus find out why a local musician was so angry about his wheelie bin
collection that he decided to write a song about it to the council.

And for all you green fingered gardeners out there, we’ve got a very special
competition. Tune in tonight at half past six, because we’ve got five pairs of
tickets to give away for the BBC Gardener’s World Live event on Friday 16 June.
It’s at the NEC arena in Birmingham, so only enter if you know you can get
there under your own steam. If you win, you’ll get the chance to meet the
presenters of Gardeners World and look at all the wonderful shows and gardens
on display. Look north will be there as well, because we’re following a
Lincolnshire gardener, who’s at the show too. So tune in tonight, because I’ll
have the question for you to enter to win tickets for the BBC Gardener’s World
Live event! I hope you can join me then.

Weather Man

Not THE weather man, but Martyn Davies, who has been reading the weather for a
long time on ITV. According to the paper, he might not be a George Clooney
look-a-like, but he’s got his female stalkers over the years. I must ask Paul
to see if he’s got any too! Martyn says that, “people see you as a friend and
write to you, but sometimes they go too far. One woman thought the animated
rain symbol on the weather map was especially for her. She phoned the studio
and said, ‘I got your message, I’m coming down!’ Then she’d turn up and I had
to be bungled out the back door by security guards to keep me safe!” So there
you are. That’s Martyn Davies – Heartthrob! Well, certainly with one lady
anyway. I’m sure Paul’s got his own stories to tell about his females admirers!

Estate Agents

They’re all talking about this, because it’s Business Week this week in Hull.
After a long time at the top, estate agents have had it so easy and now they’re
feeling the pressure these days. One chap called Gary Thomas spent five months
trying to get his flat sold by an estate agent, so in the end he decided to use
the Internet to advertise his home. Within an hour, he had found a buyer.
Better still he had escaped a hefty bill from the estate agent’s commission.
After posting his home on a website, somebody had rung up within the hour, they
came and looked at the flat and his flat was sold, saving him an awful lot of
money in estate agent’s fees. I was talking to somebody today, who was telling
me that estate agents in the future are really going to feel the pressure, as
more and more websites spring up, encouraging us to do it ourselves and sell
our homes ourselves. But the Internet appears to be the new way to sell
property in the future and the estate agents are worried.!
This particular story of advertising a flat and selling it within an hour for
no extra cost is not going to help, one little bit!

Dishwashers

Well, the days when the end of meal times meant someone being lumbered with the
washing up are disappearing. New figures show that sales of dishwasher
detergents have now overtaken washing up liquid for the first time. It spells
the end of rubber gloves and washing up liquid and dish cloths. Sales of
dishwasher detergents grew by 36% over the last couple of years. It means that
more people are buying dishwasher detergent than washing up liquid! That said
not many of the people I know actually have dishwashers, although some have I
suppose to be fair. I’ve never actually used one and in the flat at Victoria
Dock there isn’t room for one anyway. But we’re a dishwasher generation now and
tablets are ahead of washing up liquid sales.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a photograph that you think we should see for the
Big Screen one night on Look North, then get in touch. If you’ve got a
particular view that you’ve taken or if you’ve got a story that you think I
should know about and cover on the programme, then let me know. Or if you’ve
got a problem for Leave it to Levy, then do get in touch – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Carrier Bags

I suppose it had to happen and it has. The furniture retailer from Sweden is to
charge customers for its plastic bags. From this week, the Swedish furniture
company will charger shoppers 5p for every bag, rising to 10p in September. The
firm gave away thirty-two million bags last year and it’s taking the step to
try and improve the environment. The two year trials in Edinburgh lead to a 90%
drop in carrier bag use when you actually had to pay for the carrier bags.
That’s a 90% increase in the use of plastic bags! That’s staggering isn’t it? I
suppose it’s only a matter of time before more shops start to charge for
carrier bags and this shop I think is the first. They believe that rolling out
the scheme nationwide, coupled to switching to bio-degradable bags and lower
prices for reusable carriers, will cut the total use at its fourteen stores by
twenty million pounds next year! So there you are! Your views on having to pay
for carrier bags, then let me know.

Well, that's it from me for today. Don’t forget if you want to drop me a line
for the Levy Letter, if there’s something you’d like to comment on or if you’ve
got a problem or an issue that you think I might be able to deal with, then get
in touch. It’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] Join me tonight at half past six if you can.

Take care, and enjoy the sunshine!

Peter
