Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half
past six as usual. I’ll have all the day’s news, including meeting the
Elloughton man, who has just returned home after controversial stem cell
treatment. Look North will be investigating claims of whether or not it can
improve quality of life for sufferers of multiple sclerosis. I’ll have the full
story on that one tonight.

Plus we'll have exclusive pictures as scientists, on a hovercraft, survey the
Humber estuary. They say that despite the river becoming increasingly busy with
traffic, the estuary is teeming with wildlife. Our reporter, Matt Richards, who
always seems to get the daredevil jobs, will be going out with the scientists
onto the river. More on that later.

And we'll have more on the story of the piglet stolen from a farm in
Scunthorpe, but who was rescued by a good Samaritan. Plus tune in tonight to
find out how you could win tickets to see the Buddy Holly musical.

We'll return to the Boston family in our Homegrown series, who are living
entirely off locally grown and produced food and find out more about Humberside
Airport as it expands with two new routes and with Egypt as a brand new holiday
destination. I hope you can join me tonight for all that, plus the detailed
weather forecast from Lisa.

Weather

Well, as I sit here and I start to write the Levy Letter, it is Tuesday evening
and it is still dry and very humid. By the time I finish the letter and by the
time you read it, I suspect it will probably be raining, according to the
forecast. But the weather has been incredible. There’s a great picture in one
or two of the papers, which you might have seen of a beach in Cornwall. There’s
beautiful sunshine and a lovely green sea, which is superbly clear and
everyone’s bathing and then, right at the side, there’s an enormous shark! But
apparently, we don’t have to worry. There are lots of basking sharks that come
in to the coast, but they’re not bothered by humans. But nevertheless, if
you’re swimming along the beach and you look up and suddenly see a shark that
size, then I’m sure you’d get a shock. But they’re getting closer into our
waters these days, because of the rising temperatures.

Thanks very much indeed for all the emails in on a variety of subjects. There’s
just a quick one here. Yesterday I was talking about flip flops and if you wear
them for job interviews, then you’re likely to be turned down or get a black
mark, because they’re seen as not being very professional. Rachel and Jenny
have emailed me in from Lincoln (thank you ladies!) – “Just read today’s Levy
Letter and you should check out a shop in Skegness, which sells a variety of
flip flops for not £3, Peter, but for an amazing 97p!” So there you are. Go to
Skegness and you can get a pair of flip flops for 97p. And as we saw on Look
North last night you can also get your car cleaned by bikini clad ladies! If
you are in the Skegness area and you have a view on that story, then do get in
touch. After the show last night, we had loads of emails from you all. So thank
you very much indeed for all of those.

Guests

Don’t forget if you’ve got a guest or story idea that you would like to see on
the programme, then just drop me a line and let me know. We had a very
successful Leave it to Levy last night where we managed to get the Council to
come and fix a gate for a pensioner. If you’ve got a problem that you think we
could deal with on the programme as a Leave it to Levy, then drop me a line.
Send me the details and also a contact telephone number to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Shift Work

For many years I worked shifts, getting up very early in the morning and
finishing early, so I was interested to read, as I’m sure many shift workers
will be, that scientists have discovered a key reason why shift workers are
more likely to suffer from poor health. It seems that working irregular hours
disrupts the liver, preventing it from breaking down meals and harbouring more
toxins in the body. In other words, working anti-social hours or shift work is
bad for your health. You wouldn’t really think that it would take a team of
scientists to work that out would you, because I’m sure we’d all say how
dreadful we feel whilst working odd hours. This places shift workers at a
greater risk of developing conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. The
findings are particularly relevant to the four million Britons, who work
unsociable shifts to fit in with today’s twenty-four hour world. So there you
are. If you are a shift worker, then remember it is bad for your health an!
 d that’s official.

Competition

Thanks very much indeed to everyone, who entered our Fireman Sam competition.
The answer of course to the voice of Thomas The Tank Engine is Ringo Starr!
Thanks to everyone, who entered. The show, ‘Fireman Sam To The Rescue’ is on
this week at Hull New Theatre and the winner is Jason Walker from Bridlington.
So well done Jason! I hope, with whoever you’re going to take to see the show,
that you all enjoy it!

Kylie Minogue

I think I’ve mentioned this once or twice just recently. Although I was never
really that bothered about Kylie Minogue, other than she was a pretty girl, who
can sing quite well, but since her health situation and being diagnosed with
cancer, I’ve become an enormous fan. She’s setting such an example. She’s
revealed her dramatic new image to herald her return to show business. The
Australian singer and actress showed off her cropped beach blond haircut and
healthy glow in her first television interview, since she was diagnosed. Kylie
is thirty-eight now and she’s convalescing after treatment. She’s filmed a
documentary in which for the first time she talks about her year of Hell since
diagnosis. It was in May last year that doctors told her that she had breast
cancer. After a partial mastectomy and months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy,
surgeons pronounced her cancer-free at the start of this year. She looks
glowing in health now and looks just radiant. It’s a great story !
and I’m sure many of her fans are very pleased at her news. The interview is
going to be broadcast in a couple of week’s time, so I’m looking forward to
seeing that.

Well, that's it from me for today. Thanks very much indeed for reading the Levy
Letter and join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
