Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.
I’ll have all the day’s news, including the story from last night about the
tanker in trouble in the North Sea. I managed to get the breaking story to you
at the end of the programme last night and then we got those dramatic pictures
for you from the rescue helicopters from RAF Leconfield in our late bulletin at
half past ten. Tonight on the programme, I'll have the latest on the dramatic
air sea rescue as a catastrophe in the North Sea was avoided last night. A
tanker narrowly missed a gas platform after losing power and workers from the
gas platform were evacuated whilst engineers worked to restore power to the
drifting tanker. The Humber coastguard and the rescue helicopters are just
amazing aren’t they? Just incredibly dangerous work and it must have been
dreadful conditions last night in the North Sea with such high!
winds. So tonight on the programme, we’ll have the very latest on that.

Last night, we also brought you the story of the closure of the Birdseye
factory in Hull with the loss of five hundred and fifty jobs. Tonight, we'll be
investigating why the closure of Birdseye could affect the region's farmers as
well. We're one of the biggest pea-producing areas and we'll find out why
farmers are worried about their livelihoods. I’ll have the full story later.

Also tonight, we'll be in Skegness where they're hoping to bring rickshaw style
taxis to the seafront. Plus my guest will be Jason Donovan and I'll be finding
out why he's coming to the region to relaunch his pop career. All that tonight
on BBC One at 6.30pm.

And of course Paul will be with us with the weekend forecast and more
information about this wind. I think the wind has died down quite a lot now
compared to last night, but is it set to return? And how has the wind affected
you? Has it caused any damage near you? Are there any trees brought down with
the wind near you? Or has your roof or chimneys been damaged? If you’ve got any
dramatic pictures, then send them to us to the usual address of [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Levy Letter

Don’t forget if there's someone you know, who’s not signed up to the Levy
Letter and not getting their daily email from me, then tell them what to do.
All they’ve got to do is to go to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the
page here and tell them about that. Tell them to go to the addresses
www.bbc.co.uk/humber or www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire and then sign up by clicking
on Levy Letter and following the instructions through. They should then get
their daily email from me the following day.

Dieters

Cereal bars and low calorie milkshakes might promise much in the way of weight
loss, but dieters have had enough. They’ve turned their back on quick-fix
products and are increasingly opting for a balanced diet and exercise instead,
according to researchers. In the last five years, the market for foods designed
to help weight loss has dropped by more than a quarter, from £110 million to
£81 million. It seems that dieters are fed up with cereal bars and the other
special products and have decided to eat properly and exercise! Surprise
surprise!

Ugly Betty

I mentioned this programme before – Ugly Betty. It’s an American programme and
it’s a huge success in the States. Now, after just a few episodes, it’s a big
hit over here as well. It’s all about this girl, who works for a glossy fashion
magazine. Channel 4 aired the first episode last Friday, hoping it will have
the same success as it’s had in the States. The signs are certainly very good
so far! The only thing is that there is a bit of a backlash now. They’re
talking about the main character, Ugly Betty, but the girl concerned, who plays
the part in the series, is actually not that ugly at all. In fact, she’s quite
an attractive girl, who just wears some rather eccentric clothing! She’s not
overweight, she has good skin and her hair’s nice as well. The only thing is
that she wears a brace on her teeth and they’re using that as the ugly bit. Of
course, dentists are understandably not too happy about that, because many
young people have to wear braces on their teeth and later!
in life reap the benefits of it. Now dentists are saying that they’re worried
that this will put people off wearing a brace, because of this programme.
Nevertheless, it’s a huge success and is also pulling in the ratings at the
moment.

Alan Titchmarsh

Well, I’ve just finished reading his book – ‘Nobbut A Lad’ and his
autobiography of his childhood days growing up in Ilkley in Yorkshire. Alan
Titchmarsh is a great writer and this book is great with his reminisces and
stories of his childhood days. I see now that Alan, who seems to be able to do
just about everything, has now signed up to Radio Two and is going to do his
own radio show on Sunday nights. Of course, he’s heavily into his music, so
that’s one to look out for.

On the subject of celebrities, I mentioned about Carol Vorderman yesterday and
the fact that Carol has said she’s not averse to having botox and this might be
the year that she does it. Now I read that she’s going to add another string to
her bow and she would like a part in a Bond film, perhaps a ten second walk on
part or something like that. She fancies that and she’d like to be a Bond girl
at the age of forty-six. She says that a cameo role in Coronation Street would
be nice as well! She wants to be in everything doesn’t she? Carol Vorderman,
who despite not having botox so far anyway, is looking pretty good after two
children!

Pictures

As I mentioned earlier I’d love to see some of your pictures. If you take a
photograph over the weekend and you’ve got a particular view that you think we
would like to see to show on the programme one night, then send it to me to the
usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] But also, if you see anything newsworthy of
something dramatic that’s happened near you and you manage to take a quick snap
of it, then also think of us first. We’d love to see it. Send it to us
straightaway and I can get the producers to look into it and we might be able
to use it on the programme. So snap it and then send it to me to the usual
address. I’ll get it straightaway. Also use that address for anything else as
well. If you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we can deal with, then
it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Opposites

Opposites attract – runs the old adage. Well, scientists claim to have found
out why. Study has shown that women are programmed to seek out men, whose
immune systems are unlike their own. The greater the difference there is in the
genes, which are the key to the immune system, then the more likely a woman
will stay faithful. Are you following this? But if the genes are very similar,
a woman is more likely to be sexually dissatisfied with her partner, have a
roving eye and even have an affair. It’s thought that seeking out a mate with a
different immune system ensures that any children a couple have will have the
broadest immunity against disease. It’s complicated isn’t it? But there is a
reason why people fall for opposites. Opposites really do attract, according to
some research, which is just out from the States.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a story locally that you think we might like to
know about that we might be able to cover on the programme, then just drop me a
line and let me know about it. And we’ll see if we can do it on the programme.
I’ll pass it onto our Look North producers. Whatever you’re up to this weekend,
then have a very good weekend and join me if you can on BBC One at 6.30pm. And
look out for your Levy Letter again on Monday

Have a good weekend, take care,

Peter
