Hello it’s Peter here. Welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six.
We’ll have all the day’s news, and of course the day’s forecast with Paul.

Coming up on the programme tonight, with plans for a total of more than 200
wind turbines in our region, we'll be at the first day of a public inquest into
two such wind farms. This is one of those subjects that gets a big response in
our area. We’ll be reading and listening to all of your messages as always, so
do get in touch.

We'll have more on the death of Hull KR legend Peter "flash" Flanagan. He was
one of Hull’s great rugby talents, and we’ll be looking back at his career
tonight.

We'll be sampling the menu of a pub in Lincolnshire where Zebra is dish of the
day, and Rattlesnake is the special tomorrow. Don’t miss that.

And I'll be speaking to money expert Martin Lewis as he tells us how we can be
thousands of pounds richer this year. That’s all coming up on the programme at
six thirty on BBC One as usual.

Oldies

I see that the way the singles chart is put together is to change. The 21 year
old Leona’s debut single, A Moment Like This has the top spot for the second
week. She was the X-Factor winner. New chart rules came into force this weekend
that might mean that old favourites might make a surprise comeback. It’s been
hailed as the biggest shake up in the chart since it’s inception in 1952. The
changes mean that any song available as an internet download is eligible for
the chart, regardless of when it was released. Previously, songs could only be
included if a physical copy of the single was available in the shops. Now
anything that can be downloaded could be included, so you could have the
Beatles back in the charts all these years later. It’s a new way of putting the
charts together, and look out for some surprises at the top. But for now, Leona
Lewis is number one.

Television

Thanks for all the emails about Countdown and also particularly the little boy
who was on yesterday, the 11 year old Bradley Cates. I didn’t actually see him
but I’ve heard all about him.

There was sad news about Magnus Magnusson who died at the age of 77. It was
announced on Sunday. He was diagnosed with cancer three months ago. It’s very,
very sad news. He was born in Iceland, and he’s been with us for many years on
Mastermind. For millions, he was one of the defining faces and voices of the
BBC.

Still on the subject of TV, I see that Ken Russell has fled the Big Brother
house, on the understanding that he did not do “thick, ignorant people”. True
to his words, the 79 year old film director stormed out of the TV house, saying
he’d had enough of the Goodies, which you can understand.

to show, then the usual email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Seals

I’ve just seen some pictures of seals at the National Seal Sanctuary in
Cornwall. 34 animals have been brought in, in a week. Apparently it’s record
numbers of grey seal pups being cared for after being washed up on the beaches.
Rough seas are thought to have separated the pups from their mothers. There are
some sad pictures of the seals, and of course just before Christmas there were
pictures of seals from Donna Nook. Lets just hope they’re not being affected in
the same way. It’s the one place that I’ve never actually been to that I would
like to visit, the seals there at Donna Nook. Of course we’ll follow that story
with great interest. Many of these seals that I’m talking about in Cornwall are
just the pups who still have got their white skins.

Bread

The cost of a basic loaf of bread is about to soar past a pound. Consumers have
been warned that storms have caused poor wheat harvests abroad, which in turn
has forced up the price of flour for the second time in four months. Now bakers
are saying that these costs will have to be passed on to shoppers. The cost of
bread is going up.

Betty

It’s the surprise hit of the year, if you can have a surprise hit after just
eight days. A programme which started last week, Friday night I think, on
Channel Four is turning out to be a huge hit. Ugly Betty is the title, and it
looks as if Ugly Betty could be beautiful for Channel Four. It looks like the
figures are going to be amazing. If you’ve not seen the programme yet, it’s
well worth watching. The first episode of the sitcom on Friday attracted 4.5
million viewers, a fifth of the available audience. It looks like it’s going to
turn out to be a monster. If you haven’t seen it then watch out. Betty wins
over the staff at Mode Magazine where she works.

Kylie

Pop Princess Kylie Minogue has topped the supermodel Kate Moss in the fashion
ranks. The sexy singer has been named as the world’s best dressed woman for her
sophisticated new look after a time away from the spotlight. Best dressed
ladies; Kylie is number one, Victoria Beckham is number two, Nicole Ritchie is
number three, Kate Moss is number four, Sienna Miller is number five.

Yesterday

Well if you’re married and you got through yesterday with no trouble, you were
lucky because Monday was being hailed as D-Day - divorce day. More people will
have ended their marriages yesterday than any other day of the year according
to research. Avalanches of queries from unhappy couples have led lawyers to dub
Monday the 7th as Divorce Day, so if you got through it, then well done. The
stress of the Christmas and new year break with your loved one leads to fall
outs and that’s the day everybody asks for a divorce.

Well that’s it from me today, enjoy your Tuesday afternoon and join me tonight
as usual on BBC One at half past six for Look North, and if there’s anyone you
know who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter, then point them in the direction
of one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page, and if they sign up
today they’ll get their first levy letter tomorrow.
Take care, bye for now.

Peter
