Hello It’s Peter here, welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s going
well, and you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past six for all
the day’s news and stories.
After yesterday's wild weather, we're spending the day with repair teams trying
to get the region's electricity back on line. We'll speak live to electricity
bosses about what compensation might be available. If you saw the programme
yesterday you’ll have seen the destruction caused to our region by the winds.
If you suffered damage, you’re not alone, and you won’t want to miss this item
tonight.

We have a special report on the growing campaign to fight hospital cutbacks in
the East Riding. This has been a very controversial story, and we’ve had a
massive response every time we feature it. I’m sure today will be no exception,
so send us your comments by phone, text, and email, and as always we’ll be
reading every single one.

We’ll meet the Lincolnshire pensioner winding up a local landmark for the last
time today.

Also tonight, we're on Wallaby Watch after two Look North viewers claim to have
seen the marsupial roaming wild. We’ll be on the trail.

And also we’ll have the detailed weather forecast from Paul as usual.

Well let’s hope the day is going to be quieter than yesterday. It was, of
course a day of very lively weather. Thanks to everyone who got in touch with
stories and also weather pictures as well, we’re most grateful. Any time you’ve
ever got a story or a picture you think we should see then just drop me a line
and let me know. You can get me straight away on [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or if it’s
urgent, give me a call at the BBC in Hull at 01482 323232.

Pantomime

Well we’re at the tail end of the pantomime season now, but I had an email
telling me about one at the end of this month that sounds very good. Hedon
Drama Group are putting on Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood on Thursday
25th, Friday 26th, and Saturday 27th of January. It’s on at the Alexandra Hall
in Hedon, and there will be a raffle with all the proceeds going to Dove House
Hospice. You can get your tickets by calling 01482 896592. It’s also a family
affair, with three members of the Jordan family acting and directing, and
another behind the scenes. So get yourself down to Hedon and see what must be
one of the last Pantomime performances this winter.

To Woo A Woman

Well traditionally, men have used flowers, chocolates, and romantic dinners to
woo the lady of their dreams, but recent research suggests that a much more
effective, and cheaper strategy is simply to give her arch enemy a wink.
Psychologists have confirmed that nothing attracts a woman more than the scent
of competition. The Aberdeen University study found that women’s opinions of
men are often based on how other females see them. The more admirers the fellow
has, the better. So there you are chaps, all you need to do is make eyes at her
friends.

Degrees

We all hear about how important going to university is, and of course there are
endless stories about the number of graduates who are unable to get jobs, but
this is a new spin. Going to University can speed mental decline according to
scientists. While a degree may lead to brighter job prospects, researchers say
that graduates often suffer greater memory loss later in life. Men and women
over 70 were tested four times, from 1993 to 2000 on their ability to recall 10
common words. The more educated had a steeper decline in their ability to
remember a list. So there we are, get a degree, and lose your mind. Of course,
those scientists are in America…

Cool Planet

Families have been urged to turn down the temperature on their washing machines
these days, abandon tumble driers all together to save money, and of course the
planet.
In a UK supermarket, they’re going to recommend washing clothes at 30 degrees
Celsius, instead of the traditional 40 degrees. This is on their own brand
labels. The supermarket giant will also encourage customers who buy their
garments to hang them outside to allow mother nature to dry them, rather than
using spin driers. The supermarket claims that the 40 degrees Celsius wash is
no longer needed, because modern detergents and machines can be just as
effective at cleaning clothes at 10 degrees cooler, so the days of setting the
washing machine to 40 should be over. Turn it to 30 and it saves the planet.

Belly Laugh

Well Paul and I like a laugh of course, and I suppose most people do. I don’t
know anybody who doesn’t. A daily chuckle can burn up to 5 pounds of fat a
year, according to scientists. A really raucous laugh uses about the same
energy as walking more than half a mile. Again, the researchers are from
America.
It works many muscles, and makes the heart beat faster, so laughing is good for
us. Surprise surprise that we needed researchers to tell us that.

Problems

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we might be
able to tackle on the programme in Leave it to Levy, let us know. We did one
the other night for bell ringers, and we found some as well. If you’ve got a
problem or an issue, drop me a line, and give me the details. We’ll se what we
can do. The usual email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] as usual.

Of course, if you’re chatting to someone over the weekend who doesn’t get the
Levy Letter, and you think they’d like one, then point them in the direction of
one of the two links at the bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter, sign up,
and they’ll get their first, and daily Levy Letter from Monday, round about
lunchtime.

Well that’s it from me today. Whatever you’re doing at the weekend, have a very
good time indeed, and don’t forget to join me on tonight’s Look North at half
past six, and to look out for your Levy Letter again on Monday. Have a very
good weekend, bye for now.

Peter
