Hello and welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Levy Letter.

Sky High

Now it sounds like something to come out of a James Bond film - flying away on
a jet pack. But in the case of a Swiss pilot, it could become a reality. I’ve
been reading about Yves Rossy who is hoping to become the first person to fly
solo across the English Channel using a single jet-propelled wing. To achieve
the feat he will have to take a plane to more than 8,200ft. He will then ignite
jets on a wing on his back and then jump. This will be his second attempt as he
had to postpone an earlier one due to weather conditions. His ‘jet pack’ does
not have a rudder or a fin on his wing, so he will steer it using his head and
back. As well as a helmet and parachute, he will wear a special suit to protect
him from the four kerosene-burning turbines mounted just centimetres from him
on the wing. Rather him than me!!

On a similar subject, the Chinese space programme is about to launch its third
manned mission. Between 2107 to 2227 Beijing Time (1307 to 1427 GMT), the
Chinese "yuhangyuan" (astronauts) will attempt to go into orbit from Jiuquan
spaceport in Gansu province in the northwest of China. The flight is expected
to last about 70 hours and will include the first spacewalk, which will be
undertaken by 42-year-old fighter pilot Zhai Zhigang. He will be joined by two
others astronauts Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng. Good luck to them!

Banned!

Are you a fan of the Monty Python films? Well it turns out fans in the Devon
resort of Torbay have been effectively banned from publicly watching ‘The Life
of Brian’. When the film was originally released in 1979, Torbay council said
its AA rating (ages 14 and over) was unsuitable and wanted it reclassified for
adults only. The film’s distributors refused and a compromise was never reached
which meant the film was never screened in Torbay. The film won an online vote
which meant it would be shown at the English Riviera International Comedy Film
Festival. The council sought legal advice and decided the original ruling had
been redundant for a number of years. I must say I was very surprised to hear
that a whole town was unable to see a classic film for so many years. At the
least ban has been lifted which will bring a whole new generation of fans.
