Hello there and welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Levy Letter. The weather
seems to have brightened up today. I do hope it manages to stay dry over the
weekend! I’m sure Paul will try and take credit for it if it does stay nice!

Yesterday I asked if any readers had started their Christmas preparations early
this year, and if the credit crunch has affected your plans for presents. Well,
many thanks to Tracy who got in touch with me. She’s told me that she “started
wrapping Christmas presents on Saturday 27th September as many of the shops in
Boston already have Christmas cards and paper in.” However she won’t be sending
a lot of presents this year but “will do gift vouchers due to the high postage
costs. Last year I had started wrapping Christmas pressies in May.” Well Tracy,
it seems you are a lot more organised than I’ve ever been! Maybe this year I
will aim to be ready for the 1st of December! If you think you are more
organised than Tracy, let me know. I’d love to hear from you. You can get in
touch by contacting me on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also mentioned yesterday that a sex education booklet has been published for
six year olds and I wanted your comments on it. Thank you to Ruth who has been
in touch and she says that “If a child asks a question then they should be
answered honestly. Sometimes working with a book or leaflet can help parents
who feel tongue-tied, explain things simply. Mine were asking questions aged 6
or 7.” Well that’s one comment; I’m sure many have an opinion on this story so
please get in touch.

Elementary my dear Watson!

Now what do you think to this one? The classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories
of super sleuth Sherlock Holmes will be coming to the big screen. It will be
directed by Guy Ritchie who is better known for his gangster movies rather than
his literary reworkings. He has announced that Jude Law will play Dr Watson and
Robert Downey Jr will star as Sherlock.
What do you think to this casting? Do you think it would be better suited to
other actors? Get in touch and let me know what you think.

Going for Gold

In one of last week’s Letters I talked about the revival of classic game shows.
Well it seems that not a week goes by with a bit of nostalgia from the 80’s
coming back and I’ve read that the game show ‘Going for Gold’ will be revived
in October on TV. John Suchet will present and will still have the original
rounds such as four in a row and beat the buzzer. Originally contestants from
all over Europe would take part but this element will not return. However
winners will be able to defend their title the next day. So there you go. What
do you think will be revived next?

Thanks very much for reading the Letter today and I hope you will join me
tonight for Look North at 6.30pm on BBC One.

Take Care,

Peter
