That was the Alfa-Brabbham flat 12.
There is an interesting write up on it in Allan Staniforth's "Race and Rally
Car Preparation".
Even in the pits when the mechanics would blip the engine, the whole car
would just hoover/squat itself to the ground and then spring back up!
~~~~~~~~~~~
My theory for interesting racing is-
1.That race tracks should be allowed to deteriorate so that there are lots
of lumps and bumps. This would force the teams to run soft suspension to
avoid spearing off the track. To avoid the cars squatting down onto their
bump stops and pitching at high speed they would be forced to run less wing.
Voila! Drifting is back.
2.Variety, not 'even' racing is what is interesting.
All F1 cars are V10 engined, with pretty much the same chassis - only detail
changes. The F1 solution has 'converged'.
The best race I ever saw was the last one at Amaroo Park between a Mini
Cooper and a Ford Falcon Sprint. The Mini could outbrake and outcorner the
Falcon, but would just get blown away on the straights - I found it
enthralling.
Similar story at Bathurst, everyone has seen the old footage of Moffat
bouncing down Conrod in his GTHO Phase 3 on stock looking suspension at 140+
Mph.
Holden gave up trying to out-muscle it and went for SLR cars.
3. Only race on 'real' tracks, Bathurst, Nurburgring (old), Monza (old),
Brands Hatch, etc... Ban chicanes outright, at least one, preferably all
corners to be heart in mouth, 100%-commitment stuff - SWEET.
Just think, if Joe Public got interested in motor sport again he might even
learn to drive properly!!
