Ron said: What one sees is dictated by what one understands, if a man is in the African veldt and a jeep drives up and he gets in and the jeep drives off That's what we see. If a bushman sees the very same thing his reality is That he saw a man get swallowed up by a great metal beast which ran off. Which reality is more true? Perception is reality Dave. Culture dictates how the individual fills in the gaps In understanding.
dmb says: Yea, I know what you're saying here. The Bushman isn't stupid or crazy, his culture doesn't allow him to see a jeep in the same way we do. But this is not what we're talking about. This is not in dispute. The debate about SOM and the philosophical criticism of it is taking place within our culture. You and me and Pirsig and James all speak english and read philosophy books. The alternatives offered are also drawn from that same culture. (Although it is very, very helpful to look Eastward, where they already know all this stuff.) In other words, I think this line of argument is irrelevant to the issue. Ron said: No, this does not have anything to do with Topos, but radical Empiricist method does. It is Radical empiricism logically expressed. dmb says: How so? Please explain what topos theory says and how it is related to radical empiricist method? _________________________________________________________________ Share life as it happens with the new Windows Live. http://www.windowslive.com/share.html?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_Wave2_sharelife_012008 Moq_Discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
