Ronald - the "From:" line, as it appears in the receied headers, is
part of the "raw" mail header; which in fact, is not relevant for the
SMTP. That latter need the - for this SMTP authentified - "From:"
e-ddress in the socalled "envelope", which is to be created by the
mail transport agent. This information is given to the SMTP server
from the MTA when "connecting". If the SMTP server Ok's the
connection, then the mailer sends the whole "raw" (RFC-format) mail,
header, body and all.

Thus in theory it could perhaps be possible even with N'T to use just
one SMTP server to send a whole bag of mail with senders _labelled_
as being from different accounts (i.e. the "From:" and "Reply-To:"
lines in the "raw" mail). In practice it doesn't work - sure one can
simply write the appropriate "From:" and "Reply-To:" lines into the
headers of raw mail (where you normally have one line for the To:
address - perhaps additions for CCs - and one other line for the
Subject:; then an empty line or more, and then the body text), and N'T
indeed transports that an any additional header lines duely, but it
inserts par office even the "From:" of the defined user account too.

Which would precisely not be the intention.

(BTW, there can be any numbr of "From:" lines in a RFC-conforming raw
header. Though the first one must be the right one if you reply to a
list where postings are checked for coming from a subscribed author
against the sender's address.)

I couldn't get around that problem with N'T and finally had to switch
to another MTA (in fact, Marc Ressl's Netmail). I did a little "pre-
processor" for that one and it happily sends all outgoing mail in just
one go over just one SMTP.

ps, re:

Indeed, quite trivially - by using different lower/upper case typing in
the various entries of the accounts for message dirs etc.; N'T refuses,
if the input is exactly the same dir-name for different accounts but
accepts if there are simply such lower/upper case variations. Dunno
why, probably just inconsistency, <bg>. -hc
