I've been using the 16-35L on a 1Ds and have not had the red dots problem to
a similar degree. I was rather careful to underexpose quite a bit where
there were a lot of highlights. I've also found that Camera Raw's sharpening
settings has a considerable impact on this.
I'm interested in the 16-35L and will try and test one out shortly. It's strange that the 17-40 was supposed to be designed around digital but the 16-35 is delivering better results. The 17-40 is wonderfully sharp however!
I've found that in extreme contrast conditions when shooting amongst rocks and sea, underexposing the highlights drops the shadows off the scale. I could of course try two shots but then with moving water subjects, waves splashing, this is not always a practical option, plus it takes just as long as removing CA with a masking technique.
I've noticed that ACR increases the CA enormously.
Thanks for your reply. I think the 16-35 needs a test.
