It is kind of interesting, I have made some friends because of this topic.
I didn't understand why people would shut down for the summer either when
summer was the most active time for Rangers. I had went from a monster sized
outpost (3rd largest in the Section) (over 75 boys) to a tiny outpost with
just 5 boys. Then I understood completely why someone would shut down for
the summer. In a small outpost, you just do not have the resources available
whether it's the Commanders, the boys or the finances because everyone else,
including Commanders are all taking their vacations during these times. It
is very difficult to manage resources when there just are not any to manage.
The larger outpost was able to handle it a lot easier because there were
just a lot more boys and not all of them would go on vacation. Likely 1/2 of
them would stay home and play with their playstations or something else non
productive. That was when going to the pow-wows were a lot easier but with
the 5 boys, we had to negotiate, we had to pull teeth, we had to come up
with the money to go to things like that because the church didn't have it,
and neither did the boys or their parents. It wasn't a matter of whether we
kept on going for Jesus or not. We just didn't have the resources and there
was no point in running ourselves into the ground when the boys were just
not available. Rangers was always competing too in the summer with not just
youth Group, but sports as well. It wasn't about MY wants on whether the
outpost was open for the summer or not, it was about the boys' wants and the
direction of pastor. I had wanted the boys to make a decsion on where their
priorities were and what they valued most. Rangers was unfortunately not
that high on their list. (at the time I was very highly against the
distraction called pokemon) (still am too.) God blessed the boys and they
were all back in the fall.
