Now that Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has locked down a starting
pitcher and an outfielder in John Lackey and Mike Cameron, the GM’s next
order of business is Mike
Lowell<http://projostats.projo.com/mlb/playerstats.asp?id=6133>.

The Sox and the Rangers are in the midst of negotiating a deal that would
send the veteran third baseman to Texas in exchange for minor-league
catching prospect Max Ramirez. If the deal is completed, it’s been reported
Boston will pick up $9 million of the $12 million Lowell is owed for next
season.

Baseball personnel close to the situation say the deal that was once
believed to be close to 80 percent complete now has a 50/50 chance of
getting done.

The Rangers are concerned with Lowell’s right thumb, which reportedly may
need surgery. If the possible deal goes kaput, it could turn into a bad
situation for the Red Sox.

When the Lowell situation is final, the Sox will need to figure out their
next step with the corner infield positions. If Epstein doesn’t pull off a
trade this offseason, he says he’s very comfortable with Casey
Kotchman<http://projostats.projo.com/mlb/playerstats.asp?id=7293>as
the every-day first baseman if Kevin
Youkilis <http://projostats.projo.com/mlb/playerstats.asp?id=7049> needs to
shift back to third base.
