I have two inexpensive 5MP cameras. One a Kodak, one a no name. I am the club secretary for the local Kiwanis club and take pictures of our speakers each week. Took some with the no name and then some with the Kodak and the Kodak's are always superior. Stewart At 11:40 AM 9/6/2008, you wrote: MP is not a good indicator of quality. Re: [CGUYS] WiFi mobile phone
Good point. I would bet that it has everything to do with limited bandwidth. Unfortunately, this is the package that is sold by the vendor, so both elements tend to get the blame. I'm sure that Nokia makes a great phone but if it's bandwidth is throttled back so much that it can't operate, then it becomes worthless. Richard P. I think the clear sounding phones were called ANALOG :( I have yet to hear a decent digital phone signal over here. My relative's digital cellular phone in the UK is perfect. I'm not sure why we can't have the same quality of service over here. By the way, their phones and service are also cheaper than here. I too would like to hear about any phone/service that has a clear sound. Ours isn't and we are using Nokia on Cingular. In Belgium there is only GSM service on networks operate in the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz bands. Some countries (including Canada and the United States) use the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands because the 900 and 1800 MHz frequency bands were already allocated*. In the time I spent in the EU this summer, I was able to connect using the 900/1800 bands and use sms and wap but never achieved connection using 3rd party (operamini) browser on the razrV3 (GPRS) nor the samsung sync (EDGE) ...I am told the US uses 1900 for that and the EU is 2100 but have no reference for that. "In some countries such as Belgium, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Malaysia, all phones are sold unlocked. However, in Belgium, it is unlawful for operators there to offer any form of subsidy on the phone's price."* * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM Bring your quad band fone with you to the EU and buy a pay&go card in the supermarket & you're in business before you slam the car door! -Original Message- From: Tom Piwowar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 03, 2008 10:43 PM Subject: Re: WiFi mobile phone >Would you know off the top of your head which ones? It sure does have a card slot. The card pops out of the top edge. Use a paper clip to release it. I borrowed a friend's iPhone yesterday, and would have been happy if he left without it. It's easy, fun, but doesn't have the right stuff--yet. I've seen stills and videos done on the N95, and they're impressive, although not as good as with some dedicated video cameras. The iPhone has a SIM card slot that can be accessed with the traditional Apple "special tool". It doesn't have a memory card slot, and that's the big deal breaker. Most other phones in the same class have memory card slots. The iPhone is fine for local use, but I wouldn't want it to be my only phone for travel. Has anyone tried a dual SIM-card adapter? MagicSIM? SIMore? dual SIM Samsung, Haier, Philips phones? The main reason to get one in Europe is to have it unlocked from the start. H. When I was looking over phones during my stay in France I was informed that the rule was: locked for the first 6 months, then French law insists that they must be unlocked. That 6 month wait when I was there less than a month made me tough it out. Mar Mary, That rule is for phones that you get with a contract. I asked about unlocked phones in Perpignan. Pay full price, and the phone is unlocked. Maybe not where you were on the west coast. We shopped at Carrefour. After looking at the various terms and conditions we discoverd that the price was about the same. After all, the people who set the prices do have brains and do know what you may be up to. Tied to ATT (same model overseas, tied to one carrier), the iPhone is useful only to those who wish to spend, rather than use. That's the problem, Tom. Betty is trying to get there without shackles. Thank you Chad. That's most of it--must be unlocked GSM. AT&T-only is a serious, and expensive, limitation for iPhones. The iPhone camera is lame, and it doesn't do video. I need a new camera. Nokia [and other] phones have 5+ megapixel cameras and do very good video. That's better than my old Nikon. I don't need a PDA or any fancy apps, just a calendar with alarms, IM, email. Copy/paste might be nice, but not a deal breaker. A big deal breaker is that the iPhone doesn't have a card slot--not good for travel. New unlocked quadband WiFi phones range in price from $300 to $800. Combining the cost of a new camera with the cost of the phone, the lower midrange price isn't too bad. I'm waiting for the N79 to be released here. I'd like to know how smoothly WiFi phones other than iPhone move from WiFi and VOIP to mobile networks. This is important because I plan to use local or international SIM cards [maybe with a SIM doubler], and WiFi is an important part of our [basic] budget. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

According to the news reports it is far cheaper to buy one on Ebay that is unlocked. One report I saw said a good percentage of the phones sold here and unlocked and resold over seas at a hefty profit. Check out the prices for these unlocked Iphones overseas. About 3-5 times what they are here, plus exchange. Stewart At 08:58 PM 9/3/2008, you wrote: On Sep 3, 2008, at 8:57 PM, Tom Piwowar wrote: So why not buy your iPhone in the EU? Furthermore, we have 2 at&t fones (my trusty old razrV3 original model and my wife's spiffy new samsung sgh-a707 "sync" ...it's red!!) ...she uses none of the features at all except the camera and calls ...she had me shut off voicemail and internet and messages... I use everything sadly only GPRS ...both are "quad band." We went to the EU recently and AT&T cheerfully (yes, cheerfully) sent detailed and simple email to unlock the 2 phones which went fine without a hitch. In the EU we simply went into a phone shop and purchased 2 pay&go cards (in our case Proximus=like Tmobile) with minutes. They were working instantly with our phones. We were able to add minutes (we did it at the supermarket checkout register while shopping) but one can do it online or via phone if you have a debit card in the EU...we didn't. My razrV3 could do WAP but I didn't use it much. My wife never did any of that...both phones did messages with aplomb. We were thrilled. Our cards are in my desk drawer as they remain active for a year. In the plane, I stuck the at&t sims back in and we were able to call our ride from the line waiting for the passport guy...easy as pie!! ...oh, yeah...reception was spectacular pegged at 5 bars in little burgs in the backwaters ...in the area we travelled, only the caller pays, recipient pays nothing...even if the card is out of minutes, you can get called. You MUST have a quad band fone for this as the EU uses the 2 other bands not used in the usa!! I like the touch-screen, although there are other good WiFi phones that don't have it. Does anyone have experience or own a WiFi phone other than the iPhone? I'm interested in phones that switch automatically from cellular networks to WiFi networks, can browse the Internet, use IM, and have good still/video cameras, with a micro card slot, Symbian OS preferred. Examples are Nokia N-Series [N78, N82, N95, etc.], Sony-Ericsson G702, Samsung OMNIA, INNOV8, LG KC910. I'd like something portable for travel that can be used for Internet instead of carrying a notebook, including the tiny notebooks. We travel with minimal luggage, usually just carry-on or weekend size for trips as long as a month. Suggestions? Betty Rev. Stewart A.
