Maybe I should have emphasized caster angle a little more... caster angle
(the angle from the vertical pivot point to the contact patch of the tire on
the pavement, similar to the trail on a motorcycle) can improve the
stability and natural tendency of the tire to track true. I agree with all
of the points that Mark L has made, but the video I saw showed the shimmy
continuing all the way down the runway... if the caster angle and balance
had been properly done, the shimmy would tend to cancel out as the plane
went down the runway. Granted, I know more about motorcycles and cars than I
do about planes, but once the bird is on the ground, I would think similar
rules would apply. Yes damping is important, but if the geometry of the
set-up is off, it won't help the shimmy unless the gear is "locked in" (too
stiff) which kind of defeats the purpose of a castering nose wheel doesn't
it?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a supplier of good

Most Urethane foams have a terrible bond strength and
are very brittle (friable ) causing delamination so those
are to be avoided.

Torque reaction is common in any reciprocating system. Generally speaking,
you get torque reaction when the rotating mass is changing velocity

performance cars and motorcycles, but the energy (torque) has to have
something to react against, usually a fixed, stationary object (like the
ground). If one were to apply throttle aggressively, but gradually, torque
can be managed. If the system is at max RPM and has stabilized, torque
reaction should be controllable) P-factor anyone? [Yeah I know, gyroscopic

KR> KR2S qualify as LSA?

2009-08-05 Thread Mark Wegmet
If it (the KR2S) has already been accepted under a standard experimental
category, it cannot be converted to E-SLA. It would need to meet the SLA
requirements and be registered as such from the get go. It is my
understanding that you can't "back up" the SLA requirement. Having said
that, I have also read that even certificated aircraft that meet the weight
and performance criteria of a SLA (Cub, etc.) can be flown by pilots with
the Sport Pilot Certificate. So I guess, if the KR2S in question had ever
had its' flight criteria certified in excess of the SLA limits, you couldn't
fly it as an E-SLA.

Check the FAA web site to make sure.

If you are running a Corvair or VW based auto engine from the mid to late

As far as I'm aware that regulator only really operates when the oil is cold
and stops the engine from over pressurising components like the oil filter.
Once the engine is hot it doesn't do much at all, it only regulates
(bypasses) at a set maximum pressure. If your engine is not quite so new the
oil pump will not be able to reach this maximum pressure with hot oil. The
only sure fire fix is new bearings and a new oil pump.

KR> What can I use as a thrust line datum on a slightly modified KR2 project

2009-10-18 Thread Mark Wegmet
I bought a partially completed project about a year ago (boat stage with
spars) and finally got my work bench put together. The ID on the fuse is at
about 35" and when I put it on my bench, there is about a 1/2" 'lift' to the
longeron when the fuse is upside down on the bench. I am assuming that is
normal for a 'boat' that is wider than plans, so I am okay with that, but
how or what do I use for a thrust datum line when setting the wings and HS?

I am also seeing a "V" support configuration on the braces between the upper
longerons on a lot of the sites... I am not seeing (or I am missing) this
configuration in the plans. Does this improve the rigidity of the fuse and
make the airframe a little more robust in stress conditions?

Thanks for your help.

KR> (no subject) - work table

2009-11-20 Thread Mark Wegmet
I took the easy way out. I bought two adjustable "plastic" saw horses at
Home Depot (adjustable from 30" - 37" in height): ~$40. Then I got a 16 foot
extension ladder (on sale) for ~$60. Bought 2 4' X 4' X 5/8" of particle
board (could have been plywood, but I like the smooth finish), for $20. I
could have bought a piece 4' X 8', but that would not have fit in the back
of my Firebird!

The plastic saw horses are rated at 500 lbs each (total 1000 pounds; if my
KR2 project comes in at that, I don't want to fly it).
I disassembled the extension ladder into two 8 foot sections; they are nice
and rigid and light.
Using a drill with a counter sink bit, some machine screws and washers, I
bolted the particle board to the ladder sections so that I have about a 6"
overhang on either side for clamping.

This results in a very nice 4' X 8' "bench" that I have in my living room
while working on a project that I bought in the boat stage. I can take it
down and put the project in my kitchen and lean the "bench" against a wall.

If you are building a KR from scratch, you could use the same principle with
two 16' extension ladders with the legs overlapped side by side and wind up
with a 16' X 4' bench, and you would probably need one more saw horse for
the middle.

My set up has been working okay... I can stand on it, it is very stable and
really, at about $200 total cost and 2 1/2 hours of messing around to put it
together, it is working okay.

By the way, the idea to use the ladder was not mine, it was in one of my kit
airplane publications, either Kitplane or EAA.

KR> What do I do with a KR-2 that is not "square"

2010-02-06 Thread Mark Wegmet
I bought a project that was started in the late '70's that was mostly in
good shape with some minor issues. One of the things I am looking at is the
overall geometry of the boat. Tonight I found the "center" of the firewall
and tail and ran a string between the two. The reason I did this is because
the tail 'sprit' appears out of plane by about 10 degrees (as viewed from
above or below). In looking at it further the whole thing seems to be out of
square (as viewed from the top or bottom) by about two to five degrees
(think trapezoid). It is "straight"; i.e., measurements from the string
centerline are even all the way down within about 1/8".

My plan is for a wing span of about 23' with a 1' addition in width to the
H/S. It is a standard KR-2. Is this issue a show stopper, or can I rig
around it?

Thanks,

Aren't radio suppressed ignition wires carbon fiber? Conductivity of pure
carbon isn't bad, it just needs to be really loaded up to do the deed. The

years... they have their place, but maybe not with radios or antennas.

Years ago, during a seminar series on Taguchi's methods of design of

My guess is that would work fine. We kicked this around at work the other
day. I can't say exactly what we were working on, but question of carbon
fiber conductivity came up, especially with relation to EMF. We did a lab
test where a piece of aluminum was heavily influenced, but a two-layer scrap

of carbon fiber layup left over from my KR wings exhibited no such behavior.

And resistance was infinite on the surface between any two given points.
Sliding the copper foil down into the tube like I did would be problematic
though...

I haven't seen anything on here about electric trim, and I know lots of
you have it! I'd like to go electric on the elevator trim, but don't
know what kind of linear motor, actuator, servo, geared motor, etc.
would be up to the task.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

For those who want to respond to the originator only (at least from Outlook,
I haven't tried other clients), simply right click on the e-mail address of
the originator (following the phrase "on behalf of") which highlights the
entire originator's e-mail address, select copy, then past it over the KRnet

KR> Stalls

Been re-reading 'Stick and Rudder' (Langewiesche) from the '40's and his
point and focus is "Angle of Attack" big time. Maybe 'stalls' are avoidable,
but should be practiced. I found the book to be helpful as an 'attitude

I don't have a video, but I've got one "full power full stall" permanently
fried into my brain. Left wing drops, plane drops and rolls inverted,
accelerates toward the ground at an incredible rate, everything in the plane

sticks to the top of the canopy and ends up in the tail. Fortunately I was
at about 5000' when I started. This was early in my 40 hour test phase, and

I didn't realize the implications of a full power "accelerated" stall. I
was watching the airspeed indicator, rather than the ball on the turn and
bank indicator, which was a real mistake. I don't know how many g's I
pulled getting out of that dive, but losing the wings certainly occured to
me in the middle of all that. That's when I bought the g-meter.

I'm not trying to say that a KR is any more dangerous than any other plane.
I'm only writing this so others that are as inexperienced as I was will take

full-power stalls more seriously than I did. Why would you even need to
know how and at what speed it stalls at full power? Consider too steep a
climbout on takeoff and you'll understand. Now I have a very healthy
respect for that flight regime, and I avoid the possibility at all costs.

I guess that doesn't help you out with a video though

I have been building mine in my living room (not married, so no issues).
Based on an article in kitplanes, I bought a 16' extension ladder, took it
apart and used it as a foundation with two 4' X 4' sections of plywood
(3/8") under particle board (smooth surface X 1/2") for use on a previously
built project.

The ladder sections provide a square and rigid substructure, allows me to
pick it up and lean it against a wall if I need to, and rests on adjustable
sawhorses (Home Depot, height adjustable from 30" - 37"). I think I paid
less than $60 or the ladder at Lowes during a sale, the wood was about $30,
so with screws, bolts, nuts, and all the other stuff, I think I've got less
than $200 and a half a day's work in a very nice, flexible 4' X 8' work
table; just make two and you can make a full stretch KR and have a really
neat set of work bench for other projects. (either 4' X 16' or 8' X 8')

I think the KitPlanes idea more than paid for about 3 years of the
subscription price (and no, I don't work for KitPlanes).

Myron,
I was the third person to fly the new airfoil. Troy Petteway being first
and Dean Selby second. I followed the instructions of the designers of
the airfoil and set the incidence at 1? at the root and set the washout
per their specs. Personally, I think you are on a path to have a KR
which flies nose down like a Huey. That is the way the older KR's flew
and it is beyond me why you would want that. You say it will improve
forward viewing. Maybe so if you want to look at the ground. My KR flies
level, my visibility is great, my plane has flown hands off for five
minutes as it is very stable. Maybe I am not correctly following what
you are doing but if I were you, I certainly would not deviate from what
the experts have proven to be an exceptional airfoil for the KR.

KR> Good carbs

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
It's interesting to note that you mention the Mikuni "carb" (you can still
buy them new with warranty - see American Iron magazine and others [local
bike shop would work too]). I have run a Mikuni on a 900cc Sportster for a
number of years; they are consistent if properly tuned at any RPM range and
are very tolerant to the aberrations of a "kick start" Harley. On an engine
with electric start and properly profiled, they should be extremely
reliable. Webers, SUs, and others have been very successfully used on bikes,
high performance "street" cars, and other similar applications for years.

Not to sound critical, but many of the folks on this forum seem to be stuck
in the era when the KR2 was designed. E.g., I have been trying to find a
"junk yard" Corvair engine for a couple of weeks... find some, but I'm not
building my airplane around this!!

BTW; I was a "motor head" in the 60's, so the stuff you guys (and gals) are
resurrecting were my "toys" when I was a kid.

Please assume no harm/no foul.

Happy flying!

There are alot of carbs that are just better designs. Mikuni in the same mm
diameter of throat should work very well, and can be found in ANY motorcycle
junk yard virtually ready to install. The same can be said for the Bing
carbs (used by Rotax) and can be found on Seados and snowmobiles. Even
Holley and Edlebrock now make carbs for Harley engines of the same cc ranges
as the VW and even the Corvair (given that they are designed for higher rpms
and so will work at the lower rpms, with less cfm demand. Use The Auto
Mathbook to find you engine demand, then match the carb to it).

The Averovee and of course the Ellison are other examples of drastic
improvements.

And of course then there is fuel injection made easy:

Funny, my instructor called them the "Trauma - hawk" because of the T
tail being less responsive to prop wash when you need it the most -
stall recovery.

Raising the trust-line I would think increases the loads on the upper
half of the firewall. Maybe not enough to worry about, but I sure like
the idea of more ground clearance for the prop.

KR> Fire Retardant Resin Additive

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
A number of years ago I worked in the electronics industry building printed
circuit boards. We typically used a glass reinforced epoxy material called
FR-4 (G10 laminate with fire retardant, UL rated). This material is
available in a B-Stage (partially cured) condition in thicknesses ranging
from 0.0015" to 0.008" with single ply glass to 8 ply glass (depending on
what your need and finished/start thickness).

It is an e-glass (e is for electrically stable) material. It is considered a
"commodity" item. Keep in mind that this is a "pre-preg" or pre-impregnated
material (i.e., it is already fiberglass cloth impregnated with (partially
cured [b-staged] epoxy).

The epoxy resins and "bare" glass are available in the commercial markets.

A "group" buy might be easier to deal with than messing with the Alumina
Triydrate (? Tri Hydrate ?). Most fire retardants that I have dealt with
have been bromide based.

Just a thought.

Tuning an antenna is not only about increasing range or receiving
sensitivity, it actually increases the lifetime of your radio, or at least
of the RF transistors in the amp stage. Keep in mind that all the power that
is reflected from a mismatched antenna goes right back into the transistors,
where it just heats the electronic circuits. Radios have been silenced very
quickly that way.
Dene is doing it the right way - after all all of us put enormous efforts
into tuning the aircraft engines to exactly where they need to be. So why
stop at the radios? After all, a simple SWR meter sets you back about $25.

KR> 3100cc vs 2700cc Corvair engines

I'm glad to see that you have something that performs the way you expected.
Do you have any estimates on the hp@rpm and or ft/lbs of torque profiles for
this configuration (I know, not easy to get without a Dyno). The reason I
ask is that I have been considering a 13B Mazda rotary @ about 200 hp with a

Cc: Corvair engines for homebuilt aircraft
Subject: KR> 3100cc vs 2700cc Corvair engines

VairHeads,

Yesterday was a calm day, so I did a four way GPS run at 7500' at wide open
throttle to see what the new 3100cc engine would do. Bottom line was 172
mph at 3740 rpm, which agrees nicely with indicated airspeed after pressure
and temperature correction (TAS). If nothing else, this proves my airspeed
indicator is deadly accurate, since I got this same number this weekend
without the GPS. I found a similar run done last April using the 2700cc
engine, where I got 160 mph at 3390 rpm. That's a 12 mph difference (which
is about what I'd expect) and a 350 rpm gain.

These two runs were at almost identical temperature and pressure conditions,
but a year apart. Fuel consumption was 7.2 gph vs 6.0 gph. This was using
a Sensenich 54 x 54" prop in both cases, but I have added a spinner since
then. I did some pretty good comparisons of the spinner improvement then,
and concluded that the spinner only helped 1-2 mph at best (if that much),
so it looks like a 10-11 mph improvement, which is exactly what I expected.
The fuel increase represents a 20% increase in power over the stocker, which
is also about what I would have expected, given the 15% increase in
displacement and higher rpm. So I think it's pretty safe to say that a
typical KR will get a 10 mph increase in speed with a 3100cc engine.

In the same breath, let me say that I will run this thing wide open maybe 1%
of the time, so you figure out if it's worth it to you. I will say that the
climb rate is fairly breathtaking. I now have the equivalent of a "war
power" setting on my throttle, but I plan to save it for an appropriate
occasion, such as the next time my manhood is challenged! Wheel pants, gear
leg fairings, and wing/stub gap seals that don't flap in the breeze will
improve this to the extent that 190 mph should be attainable. A better
matched prop holds some promise as well. See
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/phoenix/ for details on this
particular incarnation of the 3100cc engine...

I don't know if this would work on a VW aero conversion, but you can
generally get a more stable mix and airflow with a plenum chamber before the
runners to the cylinders. Take a look at many automotive high performance
intake set ups, both carb and injected.

Just a thought; use at own risk.

This is the new location for the carb. As you can see, I have a completely
new intake manifold, based off the VW intake castings. So far, I have gotten
mixed reviews on how well it is working. The pictures show that, #3 cylinder
is running rich and #2 is very lean with #4 quite lean also and #1, a little
more on the rich side. The only thing that I can think of, that can possibly
cause this, would be a leak under the intake manifold gasket. If anyone has
any other ideas, send me an e-mail. All input will be appreciated.

KR> lengthening main spars

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet

I have noticed that the comfort zone for "netters" seems to be higher here
than on the new (albeit better) forum. I asked this there two days ago and
have had no response, so I'll try here. (Hell, maybe you are all flying!)

My subject was Dihedral, where is better. I phrased it that way to try to
spark your curiosity. I am already going to add 6" per side at the main
spars (plans coming), and I was interested if anyone had applied the
dihedral at the main spars as opposed to at the wing, and if so, what the
results were.

I would like to hear from someone who has done it, knows the performance
change, if the fuel tanks are in the main spar area [inboard] what the fuel
usage characteristics are (can you suck it all up?), or should I just build
per plan and give up making the KR something it was never designed to do?

Thanks for your patience.

KR> Fw: Aborted takeoff.

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
Thought about it... two things come to mind.
1) Manifold vacuum leak causing an imbalance in the fuel mixture side to
side. Interesting to note that the plugs with the 'RICH' symptoms had the
"BEST" compression readings.
2) I don't know what your ignition set up is, but that would be the next
thing I would look to.
Finally, a blocked air passage, mis-functioning choke/enricher, primer valve
not closing properly.

If I recall, didn't you say that this bird was down for some significant
maintenance issues? What did you change or "mess" with?

As in anything, ask what is different now compared to the last time it ran
well?

Sorry to belabor the obvious!

This morning I arrived the airport at the break of dawn. I was looking
forward to a nice flight in the 45° smooth morning air. My run up seemed
fine. All indications were everything was good to go. I taxied onto the
5,800' runway and firewalled her. As she picked up speed I noticed my rpm
was not getting above 2600 and this is not normal for me. I usually see
around 3000 on take off roll and will get 3250 on climb out. Something in my
gut told me to abort, which I did. I called the tower and since I was the
only one on the field at the time they said I could do a 180° and taxi back,
which I did a high speed taxi back. I decided to take her to the hangar and
do some checking.

At 1000 rpm: Oil PSI 18 lbs, Oil temp 280°, EGT off low end scale, CHT 280°.

At 2600 rpm: Oil PSI 28 lbs, Oil temp 230°, EGT 1225°, CHT 270°.

Next I pulled the plugs: 2-4-6 were black sooty showing richness on that
bank.
1-3-5 were clean slightly white showing
leanness on that bank.

Next I did a compression check:
1 = 80/76
3 = 80/70
5 = 80/70

2 = 80/76
4 = 80/77
6 = 80/77

Thoughts anyone?

KR> Removing Matco Bearings

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
I'm not sure what you will gain by heating the whole assembly unless there
is significant difference in the Thermal Coefficient of Expansion in the
materials (i.e., the bearing material does not expand as quickly as the
wheel.). If you have access to an arbor press, you may want to try that
after you have tossed the assembly in your freezer for a day or so, then
soaked the wheel portion (only) in water, or gently applied a torch to the
wheel (and I do mean cautiously and slowly while applying some pressure). I
don't think a drift and small sledge would work as well as consistent
pressure applied with a press. You may even be able to get them out without
the miscellaneous thermal excursions we all try from time to time.

In any event, I would suggest that you support all surfaces opposite the
direction of force to minimize distortion. It would be a shame to get the
bearing out, and wind up with deflection in the wheel.

G’day all.

The time has come for me to remove the supplied 5/8” bearings in my
Matco wheels and replace them with ¾” bearings to match the axle I
purchased.

However, the bearings in the Matco hub are (or appear to be) an
interference fit. And a tight one at that. I’ve tried heating the hub in
the oven to no effect, and was wondering if anyone can suggest a better
way to remove these bearings. I need to get the plane on its own wheels
so I can take it to work to rebuild the wings…

The archives didn’t reveal any info about removing the Matco bearings,
though the Clevelands were covered, but, unfortunately these notes
weren’t of much help…

Many thanks,
Rob.

N886MJ made a flight yesterday after it's aborted takeoff the day before.
What I did prior to the flight was to adjust my Ellison carb which was way
out of whack. I had previously set up the carb for cold weather flying and
she would not idle in warmer weather so I made some adjustments. I achieved
a very smooth idle at 900 rpm and also regained my static rpm of 2750. As I
taxied out yesterday, everything was green to go. Static rpm hit 2750. She
cycled through all rpm ranges very smooth. Everything felt good so I called
the tower and was cleared for takeoff on runway 28. This was about 6:30 last
night and there was no one else moving on the field. As I slowly firewalled
her she quickly began picking up speed. As I reached rotation I was at 3000
rpm and she lifted off like she really wanted to fly. Everything felt great
and I was headed straight out due west over the interstate. As I passed
through 800 feet, I took note that the oil temp was at 190° and oil pressure
was at 28 psi. Then I started noticing an rpm drop. I checked the throttle
to make sure it was not backing out and checked the mixture. At the same
time, I called the tower and informed them that I was turning crosswind and
would like to stay in the pattern and I was cleared to do so. As I was
turning crosswind, the rpm dropped to 2500 and began running rough. I called
the tower and informed them I was losing power and would like to turn in to
runway 10 for a 180° straight back to the runway. That is when the tower
asked if I was going to need assistance. It's nice to be in good with the
tower as they know me and did not ask if I was declaring an emergency.
Anyway I told the tower that I would be able to make the runway since I
still had enough power to maintain flight (but I really did not know how
long that was going to last). When I had the runway made, I throttled back
and set her down on runway 10 and the tower asked if I would need tow
assistance. Luckily, she was running fine at 1500 rpm and I taxied in under
my own power. Once again, I beat the odds. I pulled the cowl off and the
engine was so hot, I could have fried eggs on top of it. As a matter of
fact, I was cleaning the prop off and the overspray from the cleaner sizzled
when it hit the engine. Today, I went to the hangar and took a look. I did a
cold compression test and got the following:
1 = 80/78
3 = 80/60
5 = 80/54
2 = 80/46
4 = 80/74
6 = 80/62
Not good in my opinion. All the air was escaping into the engine case and
none through the intake or exhaust. This told me that either I had cracked
rings or cracked pistons. So I began disassembling the engine. I have
removed both heads and have pulled all jugs and removed all rods and pistons
from the crank. That is about as far as I have gotten as I had to stop to go
to Daddy's Night at my daughters school. I will say that the rings were not
cracked. I have not removed the rings from the pistons yet to inspect the
piston. The rod bearings looked like new so there is no problem there. I
will continue with the disassembly and do a complete inspection and rebuild.
I will beat this devil riding on my shoulder!!!

Look here for ideas:

Saw this product while working this year's Bike Week (no I did not get to

The last coming soon trailer is a flat trailer with 2000# capacity that
breaks down and can fit into a bag and be carried away. The guy's wife
(owner and wife) broke the trailer down after getting the bike off with no
special tools and stored the trailer in the back seat of the truck king cab!
With a little thought and a rack for the wings, one could do the same for a
KR transport trailer.

Or use a converted Airstream RV trailer as one builder did. This is the same
builder that designed a coupling fitting that aligns the wing for easy
attachment, and a tray to roll the wings onto and off the trailer.

KR> Engine mount

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
I would suggest that you drill your drain holes before powder coating. If
you do it after, two issues will come up. A) You will have exposed metal in
the holes that may rust; b) you may chip the powder coating with the
resultant exposed (rust-able) metal exposed also.

You may want to consider a "conversion" coating on the ID and drill the weep
holes before powder coating. Your powder coater (even if it's you in the
household oven [understanding wife... wink, wink]) can block the holes so
that they stay open and allow drainage.

If your mount is stainless, this consideration may change some.

After talking with my welder about my engine mount. He stated that I
should drill some small holes in the welded tubing at the low spots to let
condensation drain out. I told him that Willie Wonka had charged the
tubing with gas as he welded the mount up. He said it did not matter as
the mount would rust from the inside out with out the drain holes. This
guy gets recertifed every 6 months so I tend to believe him. After I get
my mount powder coated I will drill the proper holes for drainage.

I am looking for a high temperature fuel and oil resistant silicone that
does not need to be exposed to air to dry. Most normal silicones out of a
tube have a solvent in them that smells like vinegar that disolves out when
they dry. The problem is that in some applications where you need a deep
bed of silicone that they skin over on the outside and the inside never
dries or takes forever.

I have been told by someone that that there is an epoxy silicone (I assume
it is a 2 part mixture, but I am not sure) with a part number of
CR-2034-B-1/2 that is used on engine applications. I have searched
everywhere and can not find it. I don't know who makes it. If anyone knows
who makes it please let me know.

I am aware of the 2 part silicone mixes that are used for making molds and I
have some of them already. I don't know if they are heat, solvent, or oil
resistant though.

KR> KR2 at SWRFI

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
Just my 2 cents (as it were). I have read some reluctance among the folks
that fly all of the KR series planes to seriously consider AirVenture; maybe
due to traffic concerns, "playing with the big guys", or whatever... You may
want to seriously reconsider attending.

Having said that, and maybe ticked off a bunch of you, please allow me to
explain.

I am 'new' to the plans built/kit built group. I went to Oshkosh last year
for the first time because I wanted to look at kit built airplanes... my
first thought before hand was that something built in someone's
garage/basement or whatever couldn't be a 'real airplane'.

Oshkosh taught me that I was way wrong!

If you love airplanes, you can find it there: Stinsons, Pitts, F-18's and
everything in between.

There is a reason that Whitman Field is the "Busiest Airport in the world
during AirVenture". And, no, I don't work for them.

It is too late for this year, but you guys have some fantastic planes...
show your colors dudes.

KR> Oshkosh

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
I must admit that last year I was a member of the "dark-side" as I was
looking at GlasAir's, Lancair's, and RV's... sorry, didn't notice the KR's.
Also, I was only there on the last Saturday. I had to "fly" a '96 Firebird
at 2000 rpm (78 mph) on the ground [no less] to get there [it took 2 1/2
hours from Powers Lake WI].

I'll try to do better this year :-)

Mark,
Last year we had six KR's at Airventure. Did you not see them? Five of us
flew in together and another showed up later. We all camped out right there
on the EAA grounds. It is never too late if you really want to go.

They have plenty of room to camp out.If you really want to enjoy
Oshkosh, camp out and tell stories like the rest of us.I would not be
surprised to see several KR's there this year. And if you really want info on
KR's you need to attend the cook out at Mark Jone's hanger the Sunday
before. That is what Oshkosh is all about is the people. And better yet plan
to attend the KR gathering in September, you get a lot of good info there and
again plenty of room to camp..

KR> Newbie question - KR-1 or single seat KR-2S

2015-01-06 Thread Mark Wegmet
Bottom line is it is your airplane; decide on your mission, find the design
that fits it and you, then build it. Definitely solicit the opinions of
experienced builders/flyers of your type - there are several KR builders/fliers
on this site with a lot of wisdom, but it is still, at the end of the day, your
airplane. Sounds like you're on the right track.

I'll end up building what suits me. I feel it's a high performance airplane
with a VW. Not a V-Witt or a Sonerai, but high-enough performance. BTW the
spread in performance between a Piet and a KR covers the performance envelopes
of a whole lot of airplanes that are equally worthy of consideration.

KR> project update

2015-01-16 Thread Mark Wegmet
I don't know why you wouldn't want to have the probes in your tank. There is
no electrical load on the probes nor current passing through the solution
per se. The active part of the sensor is outside of the solution being
measured. It is probably safer and more reliable than any "float" type of
sensor and can be readily calibrated for each element of the probe for
extremely accurate measurements. While I don't have them in a fuel tank, I
have used this type of probe in many other applications including
electroplating, rinsing, sensing, etc. etc. etc..

Robert,

The only possibility I can envision is to have a stand pipe inside the
cockpit , connected to the tank , where the level of fuel in the standpipe
follows the level in the wing. In that case, why not just use a site gauge.
I have 7 foot long probes in my wing tanks running from root to tip of the
outer wing panel. Because the tank thickness changes from root to tip, they
are not linear. For wing tanks where the wing has dihedral there is no
perfect system, floats or otherwise. Know what fuel you start with, know
your fuel burn, and watch the clock.

P.S. for Robert. I'll be in Nashville on occasion as my daughter is moving

This is great to get these totals.
I do plan to buy the wing skins. Probably fab everything else per the
original way.
A full time job is 2000 hours per year.
Robert, 1500 hours is on the low side of these times. Did you use any prefab
parts like wing skins? what was ur experience prior to starting to build the
KR? and why would you say you were faster than others? skill, work
environment, tools?
My current house doesnt have a garage. I do have a 20x30 fabric hangar at
the airport but it's three season due to the bottom has to be open for wind
compliance (which makes it complaint to over 100MPH winds). Of course there
is nothing stopping me from (I JUST realized!!!) building a 16x20 work shed
INSIDE my hangar, and heat it with a herosene heater or something to get 4
seasons out of it!

keep water out of the oil and ensure the seals get a nice oil soak. JMHO.

"self-discharge" nearly as fast as regular lead-acid batteries, and last a lot

That's a legacy issue. Anything else though?

Very few KRs "cruise" at 180 mph. Very few KRs make a 980# gross weight.
Very few KRs are 520# empty weight. Over the last 20 years, the members of
this forum have made great strides in improving the handling characteristics
and safety of the plane. Adrian Carter's quote of a sudden hard breaking
stall then pointing straight down is inconsistent with the gentle stall I
see in my KR and others report as well. The $35,000 finished aircraft
number will likely generate a lot of discussion. I hear some pilots claim
unbelievably low costs like they are reporting to the local tax board. I
know I had mine flying 18 years ago for $15K, but likely have around $30+K
in it by now, but that includes 1050 hrs of wear and tear, maintenance and
upgrades.

Larry is clearly offended by the inaccuracies in the article. I see it as
an overall positive and upbeat article. Even though I came down on Larry a
bit here, know that Larry and I are good friends and it's only a spirited
discussion. It's OK for us to disagree.

KR> Ballast weight installation

2015-05-10 Thread Mark Wegmet
Don't some of the guys move the engine forward? I've read posts where
spacers were added to the engine mount at the firewall to accomplish this.
Of course, you would need to modify the cowl, but that approach sounds more
predictable and least painful.

Moving the wing forward would exacerbate the problem. The aerodynamic fix
would be to move the wings 2-inches aft from the KR-2 plans callout. That
is essentially what was done with the KR-2S. In the case of my already
built (and flying) KR-2, moving the wings would amount to building another
fuselage and stub wings. I chose bolting on some steel weights. Granted
not the most elegant solution. As Larry recommends, perhaps a bigger engine
installation would indeed be the best choice. Anyone interested in a
firewall forward package for a Great Plains 2180 VW, Diehl case, Zenith
carb, RR engine mount with 2" extension blocks, Sterba 52x52 prop, Revmaster
oil cooler, Grand Rapids engine monitor with all probes and 10.6 engine
operating hours, turning 3150 RPM static WOT.

I'm no aerodynamicist but seems to me the proper way to fix this problem is
simply to move the wings forward. Either that or shorten the tail.

Using hydrogen or helium instead of air in the tires will help with
buoyancy, which might help. This has the side benefit of increasing the
service ceiling.

Keep in mind when playing around with lead that it is highly toxic. It's
against the law to use lead even for wheel weights, at least in California.
If your plane is loaded with lead it's possible you'll be stopped at the
state line and have to take a bus the rest of the way.
Lots to consider here.

KR> Engine miss

2015-05-25 Thread Mark Wegmet
My '60 Sportster (XLCH) with a Morris mag "fires" on every revolution on
both cylinders, although due to cam timing the front and rear cylinders are
on a 'power' stroke on alternating revolutions. Because of the 45 degree

KR> Engine miss

2015-05-25 Thread Mark Wegmet
I probably should have phrased that better... the V-Twin construction
follows the typical 4 cycle configuration; the mag fires on every revolution
and the power strokes are controlled by cam timing. Take the cover off the
mag and watch the lobe and point actuation - that will tell you if you are
timed for a "waste" stroke.

KR> bolt torque?

2015-08-31 Thread Mark Wegmet
Larry is correct in that a tightened fastener stretches. We use torque
because it is easier to measure. Based on the physical characteristics of
the metal, the amount of torque applied vs. thread configuration can be used
to calculate the approximate stretch of the fastener which, based on the
tensile strength and elongation characteristics of the material, can be used
to determine the 'clamp force' being applied to the joint. That's an
oversimplification, but as others have said, is probably close enough for KR
work.

This is why for some applications new fasteners are recommended due to the
fatigue factor involved in repeated stretching in high force applications.
As usual, your mileage may vary.

 bolt torque?

When a bolt is tightened (torqued) the bolt will stretch. Measuring the
"stretch" will indicate the amount of torque. Probably more accurate than
measuring with the wrench as other factors can cause a false reading.

KR> Jim Faughn's engine

2015-09-06 Thread Mark Wegmet
It would probably help to distribute the oil evenly in the pan for a brief
time before start if the engine was level. Not sure what that would do for
you.

A common practice that I have used for engines that have been sitting for a
while is to oil prime the cylinders, put new oil in the crankcase, turn the
engine over by hand to spread things around, and then crank the engine on
the starter until you get oil pressure (give the starter 'breaks' to keep it
from overheating, be willing to buy a new starter if needed, or get a remote
heavy duty starting system that you can bolt to the front of the
crankshaft). Check cylinder pressures/leak-down, Repeat.

It still doesn't negate the affects of an engine sitting for a long time.
The advise I get from my Harley friends is perform the above, expect a short
engine life initially and be prepared to rebuild soon. This was after I told
them I was doing a complete rebuild on a motor that had been sitting for 20
years and was preface by "If you can get it to start"

Just a thought.

Remember, YOU don't have to build 51% of the aircraft to register as an
amateur build aircraft. You just have to demonstrate that 51% was amateur
built. With the fuselage all being 5/8" spruce and plywood that is clearly
hand laid and glued with lots of hand laid glass, I don't think that will be
an issue. BTW, I did this several years ago when I acquired an Avid Flyer
under similar circumstances.

To get a Repairmans Certificate, you have to demonstrate enough knowledge of
the aircraft to convince the DAR, who will send a letter to the FSDO, that
you know enough about the construction to properly maintain the aircraft.

It's been a while since I had to plan a flight to anywhere, but I'm thinking
about the flight out to Chino for the Gathering. What's the consensus on a
good free (or at least cheap) online flight planning software? The ones
that were available two years ago could use some improvement. I don't have
an iPad so I'm really thinking PC web-based stuff. I've let my FlightPrep
subscription expire, and it wasn't the most intuitive stuff I've ever seen.
Then I tried AOPA's, but it seems a little dumb...it knows my range but
doesn't suggest waypoints. Airnav's fuel finder will do that, but lacks
much of a map showing airspace and the kind of things you'd want to dodge,
as well as rubber banding around things. My iFly 720 does that, but it's
pretty small, and I can't print it out for a reference. You see what I'm
fishing for here.

I'd consider something that's "not cheap", if it's reasonable and worth it.
Any suggestions? I could spend the rest of the day searching and testing,
but I'm hoping y'all can save me the trouble, and let me finish hooking up
engine control cables (mixture and throttle) and connecting engine sensors
on the firewall side. This thing may run two weekends from now!

The wings program has been around for nearly 20 years. You can call your
local FSDO office and get on an email list for notifications for wings
qualified classes in your area. Often times they are CFI or FAA lead talk
on safety or a specific aviation related subject. It can count as part of
your BFR. The FAA used to give out little "wings" pins for completion of
various levels of the wings programs. It was something on the order of 20
levels. Don't know if they still do that sort of stuff anymore or not.

An example of wings qualified seminars I have sat in on were:
A talk about when we switched from the old standards or weather briefings to
the international METAR/TAF standards.
A talk at an EAA Meeting about self maintenance on aircraft, what you can
and can't do.
A talk at an EAA meeting about transition training for pilots transitioning
to LSA aircraft.

Generally, with any aviation safety related talk, if requested, the FSDO
will approve it before hand as qualifying for the wings program. Often
times they are put on by the local CAP, local CFIs, or by an FAA FASTEAM
member.

you bring your own tubing). They might need to get a little creative because
of the smaller overall diameter tube, but it should be doable.

Bent would be stronger than welded, as there would be "no heat affected
zone" to weaken the parent material, as you get from welding. A CNC bender
would make quick work of this job, but given the scale, it may be difficult
to recoup programming costs without buying a bunch of them. Somebody in
that business...like nvAero, might just be up to the task.

I used .049" for mine, and have thoroughly abused them on landings by
pushing hard on both pedals out of pure apprehension! But they have almost
three thousand landings on them, so .049" is sufficient if welded properly.
See http://www.n56ml.com/pedals/index.html for more on that...

KR> Newsletters 168-214

2014-10-08 Thread Mark Wegmet
Go to your library with a flash drive. Most libraries have internet access,
so you can "research" the web site and download the content to the
flash/thumb drive. If your library doesn't have it, check with a friend who
has high speed access. You can find 2GB thumb drives for around $5 if you
look - some sales content comes on flash drives with that much "free" space
left on them.

Just a suggestion.

KR> KR2S supplement

2014-10-12 Thread Mark Wegmet
Buy someone's project; if you pay attention, you will save build time, get
something well built, and get a full set of plans for less than you would spend
for the materials. I have a KR2S and KR2 project (not for sale) and each came
with a full set of plans, builders logs, etc. We all start with the idea that a
KR is a hot rod, but basically it is an aviation equivalent to a motorcycle;
small, fast, and you will need to pay attention. I haven't finished building
the KR, but mine will weigh a little less than my HD Dyna Super Glide Custom
and the KR will probably be a little faster. My cost will probably be about the
same to build the plane as the bike cost.

Would anyone be willing to send me a scan of the KR2S supplement?

After more than 2 months of waiting for the plans and a couple notes from

is for whatever reason not interested in doing business with me. I requested

I would just like to have a glimpse at what could have been.

KR> KR Newsletter download problem

2014-10-15 Thread Mark Wegmet
All;

Just downloaded the last 3 packages using freedownloadmanager - took about 2
minutes total on a 30MB baud download connection via cable: below is a link
to the non-commercial, open source download manager that will run multiple
thread downloads, allows restarts for failed file downloads and in general
speeds up downloads on connections that aren't fast to start with and is
amazingly fast on fast internet connections (like high speed cable). And
yes, your mileage may vary.

I have used this for nearly ten years and have never had a problem. Oh yeah,
it is ad/commercial free like most open source applications. Make sure you
use the .org link because there is a similar application with almost the
same name that is buggy and is loaded with Trojans.

KR> Landing gear question

2016-05-08 Thread Mark Wegmet
I recently bought a couple of gear legs that are fiberglass and for a Grumman
which have indicated that they will support a 2200 to 2400 pound aircraft.
Obviously a KR as about 2/3's to 1/2's that. Should I make them narrower or
thinner (i.e., split them to reduce the thickness by about 50%) or narrower
(i.e., make the width about 1/3 less than they are now)? They measure 3 3/4" X
1" at the bottom and 7 3/4" X 1" at the top and are 26 1/2" long.

I think the length is good, but the other dimensions will be too stiff.

What do you guys think? Thanks.

KR> Firewall Edge Finish

2016-05-11 Thread Mark Wegmet
Keep in mind that Stainless Steel is not rust PROOF, but rust and corrosion
resistant. Pat is absolutely correct - if you introduce iron (standard steel
fines) to the surface of stainless, that will seed the surface with iron and
you will get rust and/or corrosion. 300 series steels are "self-passivating"
due to the higher chrome/nickel content. 400 series steels, particularly 420
is prone to corrosion unless chemically passivated. There are passivation
gels (acid based) that can be used to encourage a passive surface; if it is
clean 300 series stainless, it will self-passivate when exposed to oxygen.
Acidic cleaners will strip oxides from the surface and encourage a
passivation layer - make sure you rinse well and dry.

If you have the money, titanium is inert and the rust or corrosion you might
see is introduced from iron contaminants from machining or cutting; easily
removed with the right polishing compound. It is also very light, but
comparatively soft.

KR> Ethanol

2016-06-06 Thread Mark Wegmet
One of the things to note about the ethanol/water issue. Water and ethanol are
fully miscible; i.e., the blend is total and permanent under normal conditions.
You can determine the "mix" by monitoring specific gravity and applying the
appropriate formula to determine the "percentage" of water. There are other
analytical methods available as well. While it is miscible, it is not
hygroscopic in and of itself - water in alcohol is typically the result of
condensation in the fuel cell and the aforementioned miscibility.

In windows 7 you go to the control panel and system updates and choose the 'let
me choose' option. This will notify you that updates are available and give you
the option to select which ones you want. The list can be long and if the brief
description provided to the right of the list when you highlight (not select)
the update isn't informative enough, you will need to go read the knowledge
base article (it is listed as a hyperlinked file on the right of the update
list window and starts with KB). Once you figure out which KBX update
contains the Win10 update, make note of it and never select that update in the
future.

The "free" Win10 update is supposed to disappear on July 29th (you'll need to
pay $199 to get it after that).

Win8 Pro should provide the same functionality regarding update selection,
although I've never tested it.

2016-08-03 Thread Mark Wegmet
Interesting. Keep in mind that the FAA drone registration process currently
in place registers DRONE OWNERS. E.g., I am registered and I am required to
apply my registration number to "any aircraft (SIC)" that I fly. Mine happen
to be small R/C helicopters, but I only have one registration number for any
'drone' I fly. Drones larger than a certain size and/or used in commercial
applications will/may be subject to additional regulations, but at this
time, it is individuals that register as drone owners, not assigned numbers
for individual machines.

I went to the EAA web site and found the link to download the Solid Works
software (search on SolidWorks). But it is a multistep process. You have
to fill in a form and then you get a message back with another link. Then
you go to that link, download software, and fill in another form and you are
to get a key to unlock the software. Doing all this resulted in me not
getting emails sent back. So I went to the EAA forums (there is one for
Solid Works) and found out that the Solid Works system rejects emails for
whatever reason. SO I tried other email addresses. It did not like my
first comcast.net one but accepted by second one. When I went to get the
key the only one accepted was my gmail.com account and that message was sent
to my junk folder. Like I stated previously, there are some twists and
turns but eventually I got there. When a form is submitted, you should get
a return message in a couple of minutes...if not, might try another address.

That is what worked for me.

though Paul clearly put his contact info in the body of his e-mail along
with the instructions to put responses in the subject line.

Everyone on the list is either a pilot or a 'wanna be' pilot, so should be
accustomed to following instructions - if the controller tells you that you
are cleared for a straight in on rwy 21, you do that, not decide it is
inconvenient and land on 3 (we all know what happens there). So how about we
all agree to read and respond appropriately to communications on the net.

BTW, for the folks that need a reminder, if you don't pick up the sender's
e-mail in the body of the request, you can always "reply to all", delete
KRnet at list.krnet.org from the to line and it will leave the e-mail address
of the original sender. Try it.

JMHO.

KR> Typo error put right.

2016-09-20 Thread Mark Wegmet
A little off topic, but a common phrase when I was in the Corps during the
early '70's (said tongue in cheek) was "he who fights and runs away, lives
to fight another day". No one believes they are going to die, ever. When it
happens, they no longer know. Getting into an airplane, motorcycle, or high
performance anything, requires an enormous amount of faith. Courage is
confronting the unknown and moving forward anyway.

Colin, I salute you... nice, keep it up.

Don't wait for the EAA or AOPA; write/e-mail your congress - person on your own
now. You can still participate in any future EAA, AOPA, etc. activities.

Re: KR> Melting lead

2017-02-02 Thread Mark Wegmet via KRnet
If it is a true eutectic, you can put it in an oven set at 425F - 63/37 SnPb
melts at 361F. If you have a ladle and are VERY careful with appropriate
PPE, you can transfer it to your new pot. If your old pot has a "drain" set
up, again, with proper PPE, you can 'dump' it into the new pot. Obviously,
you will destroy everything on your old pot except the solder pot itself by
doing this.

You could also disassemble your old set up and build a mini kiln with
firebrick/refractory brick and propane or gas torches to accomplish the same
thing.

I hope you are knowledgeable about handling molten metal... this is not a
task for the uninitiated.

BTW, I spent almost 30 years building circuit boards, including assemblies
with SMD fine pitch, wave solder systems, IR/Solder paste, etc. In any event
BE CAREFULL!

Lead can be melted with direct application of a propane torch. That does
tend to oxidize the lead, so you do get more slag. Solder is a mixture of
lead and tin. These will oxidize at different rates under the torch flame.
That could change the mixture ratio of the solder. Maybe not a big deal,
but could be. If you can get at the underside of the pot, suggest you apply
the torch there.

Speaking of melting lead, I have been trying to figure out for the past few
days how to deal with my solder pot that just crapped out that I use for
mass soldering of circuit boards. It is a big 2,000 Watt electric pot that
is regulated at 250 degrees C. I have a new solder pot on the way, but am
trying to figure out the best way to melt out the 75 pounds of solder in the
old pot and put it in the new one. At today's prices for bar solder it is
$1,500 worth of solder. It takes about an hour to melt when the pot is
working so I am not sure if I can effectively just remove the pot from the
whole machine and heat on the stove or heat it with a torch. Withe any luck
the heating element on the new pot is the same as the old one and I can just
transfer it to the old pot. Can't buy just the heating element.

Once you get your system built, take it and get it plated and it will last
forever. Nickel chrome or some other and it shouldn't be that expensive but
might be worth checking into.

Subject: Re: KR> 4-into-1 exhaust system help?

I gave up trying to find an exhaust system that even vaguely resembles what I
have on N891JF. I'm going to have to build another one that replicates it,
unless I want to remove the engine, completely reconfigure the firewall and
intake system, etc. Building a new system, as painful as that sounds, is
easier than the alternative.

I was going to build it out of 321 stainless until I checked the prices.
  A 321 U-bend is $94, a 304 U-bend is $40, and a mild steel U-bend is $10. I
need 8 U-bends (four are actually J-bends, but same price), just to think about
getting started, we're talking $800, not to mention collector, tailpipe,
flanges, etc, if built from 321 stainless. The existing one made it to 600
hours and was mild steel. I'll have N56ML back in the air before I put another
600 hours on this one!

By contrast, my Corvair system was almost reasonable built from 321, because it
is built so simply using only three U-bends for six cylinders. But it's not a
complex 6-into-1 system either, just a pair of simple 3-into-1 pipes.

I have everything I need to start on it, and that's what I'm doing all weekend,
and probably next weekend as well. I built two mockup engines, one with the
old exhaust to measure distances and angles from, and the other as the fixture
to build the new system onto. We'll see how it goes.

One thing I learned along the way is that Great Plains has no exhaust systems
built, but they do have fixtures, so they are "to order" with a
30 day lead time. The configurations are shown on their website at
http://greatplainsas.com/scexhaust.html , none of which are similar to mine.
Also, gauge size is not mentioned on their website, but they are 18g (.049"),
rather than the 16g (.065")like the original exhaust system, so I had to get
all materials elsewhere. I did buy flanges from them, but am not enamored with
them as the mounting holes are huge compared to the 8mm studs, so I'll have to
carefully center the flanges to the ports before I start welding tubes to them.
