the oil drain plug is overtightened and rounded
off. Why oh why do people overtighten so many things??

My sister-in-law has a rounded drain plug on her '91 Isuzu Rodeo.  I was 
planning to try vise grips on it, but the oil sucker does work on that car 
with a tube inside the dipstick tube that can get to the bottom of the pan. 
I think that'll be one of the first projects in the new shop along with the 
oilchange in the SD.

For comparison M1 is South Africa goes for about US$35 for 4 litre or
US$45 for 5 litre . Only sold in 4 l containers.

It could be worse.  Mobil 1 was, IIRC, US$18/L at Carrefour (French 
WalMart) in Singapore a few years ago.

30 weight is 30 weight at operating temperature regardless of the oil.

Unfortunately yes it is expensive over here, not sure why. Perhaps a

Anyway I was in the local GM dealer the other day and on the counter 
they had an advertising thingy for castrol oils, basicallly it was three 
sealed tubes about 4 inches long with oil and a ball bearing. One tube 
had synthetic, one had semi-synthetic and the last had dino.
The point of it was, when you tipped it over you could see the ball 
bearings 'race' each other down. The fully synthetic always won, the 
semi was half as fast and the dino took forever.

Not the bolt, just the two little black o-rings on the nether end.  
They leak when they get hard and the tappet gallery drains down 
overnight.  Takes a while to pump them back up.

What you are looking for is o-ring 015-997-94-48, and you'll pay about 50 cents 
each for the two o-rings that fit around the bottom end of the shaft that 
locates the oil filter in its housing. The oil filter in most diesel MBs has 
two portions: a high-volume filtration (the open filter part at the bottom) 
which feeds the oil galleries, and a bypass portion (the top part with the 
small holes) that returns directly to the sump via the inside of the filter 
shaft. Those o-rings seal the base of the filter assembly, preventing pressure 
loss during running and preventing drainback after shutdown.

Detailed images of the oil filter arrangement (incl o-rings) is in engine job 
18-005 "Oil circuit", which also describes the overpressure valve, oil 
thermostat, and oil cooler functions.

I would find someone who would clean the manifolds (if the exhaust is 
clogged the EGR has clogged the intake as well) instead of replace them. 
  Seems pretty silly and expensive to me.  He should probably look 
around for a good indy.

Tell him to check out www.tdiclub.com  They have a good forum there and 
they might be able to help more.

I stand in the plume from the torpedo heater.  That way I
catch a bit as it heads for the (nonexistent) ceiling and
out the ridge vent.

Salamanders, IIRC, are a particular type of heater with an oil
tub and two pipes coming off of it.  They flutter, kind of like
a V1 pulsejet engine.

The crap is inside the prechamber, not the main cylinder.  The usual
instructions have you crank the engine with the GP out to blow the
loosened crap out the open hole.

The three that I am pretty sure are bad measured somewhere in the
neighborhood of 50 ohms.  I was using
an anolog meter, so I don't know, but it was on 100 ohm, and it
stopped around the middle.  One and 5 looked like they were around 1
ohm.

If they are carboned up they will be tougher to get out?  How do I keep from
breaking off the tips?

Well mind given your other comments likely they are bad.

Disconnect the wires, don't drop the nuts, use one of those racheting  
wenches.
If there is not a problem with carbon buildup they should just  
unscrew. Otherwise you
are into fun to ensure you don't break the tips off.


My copy of the Beru glow plug manual notes:

Observe the breakage torque when dismantling glow plugs.
On no account carry on turning - the glow plug could
otherwise break. Instead, proceed according to the 3-point
programme: heat up - release -unscrew:

1. Heat up: Run the engine until it is warm or apply
current to the intact glow plug through a separate cable
for 4-5 minutes - this heats up the glow plug and burns
it free.

2. Release: Apply a generous quantity of anti-rust agent or
multi-functional oil to the base of the thread and leave
to work in for approx. 5 minutes.

3. Unscrew: Then start a new attempt to unscrew the plug
and use suitable tools to release the glow plug from the
cylinder head. (Do not exceed the maximum release tor-
que - see table below. Make sure you stop before you
reach the breakage torque, if necessary start a new
attempt by applying heat.)

After the old glow plugs have been removed, make sure you
clean the thread, the pin seat and the glow plug channel
with a suitable tool.

Glow plug thread Breakage torque
8 mm 20 Nm
10 mm 35 Nm
12 mm 45 Nm

Observe the torque specified by the manufacturer when
screwing in a new glow plug:

Ok, the reaming is actually something I have heard of, but never really
understood what is being done.  Its not cleaning the threads, its actually
cleaning further in, as in in the chamber, am I correct on that?  Doesn't
that put pieces of carbon loose into the sylinder?  Isn't having crap loose
in the cylinder a bad thing?

use a 12mm ratcheting box-end wrench to make access easier - hard to get to
with sockets.  Thread the new ones in by hand - last thing you want to do is
cross-thread the holes.Some people put a little oil on the threads, some
don't - I think the torque ratings for the plugs are for dry threads.

If there's a lot of carbon in the holes, you'll probably want to ream out
the excess carbon before putting in new plugs.

And don't lose the nuts holding the electrical wires on the plugs - they're
a bear to relocate once they fall off into the engine bay.

[MBZ] Changing glow plugs?

Today I went outside with my newly liberated meter, and found that 3 of my 5
glow plugs seem to be bad.  My glow plug light stopped working a little
while back, and I have not been able to check that out until now.  I
measured the impedance of each one at the relay.  So, I'm figuring that I
should just change them all.  The relay seemed ok, as much as I could check
it out today.
So my question is, is there anything funky about replacing them?  Spark
plugs are no problem, unless they are in a Toyota Previa (In which case you
have to take out the passenger seat, and open the floor of the van to get to
them).  Its in an 82 300SD, so a 617.  All five of them seem like they
should be fairly easy to get to.  The 5th one looks like the trickiest, just
because of the oil filter housing, but there should be plenty of space.  Are
there any special tools that are needed to replace them?  Do I just
diconnect the wires, and get the appropriate sized wrench and start removing
them, and then reverse the operation to install the new ones?

If it has not been done yet, I would change the B2 piston while you have the
tranny out of the car.   In my SD it was doable but tricky with it still in
the car.  I don't know if a 124 is wide enough to pull it off.  I'd also bet
it could be done in half the time out of the car.  Mine was leaking from a
corner of the gasket, where the PO had left a bolt off the pan at some
point.  So that is possible at least.

After attaining a Mater's degree to assist people in helping themselves 
(therapist) and working for three years in the field I walked away and will 
never return again.

Why?  Pride in workmanship.  I refused to play the games that administration 
wanted played concerning client confidentiality.

Now that same administration has black balled me and I could not get a job 
even if they were in desperate need.

My final take?  I know that what I did was the right thing to do.  I wake up 
every morning feeling good about life in general.

Will I ever make a huge difference to the world?  Absolutely not!  BUT, my 
decision to say SCR _ _  You All (the administration) has left me feeling 
good about myself.   :)

Pride in whatever it is I do day to day and happy doing so.   :)

Not the center bolt, the o-ring on the center bolt. I've converted all
my old engines (and new ones) to Mobil 1 and not had a single problem.
The one with the most miles was the SDL at 270,000.

The problems your brother describes are well-known issues with VW TDI engines. 
You didn't include the year of the car, but the solutions mentioned below are 
applicable to the non-PD engines (115hp, not 130hp) produced until about the 
end of the 2003 model year. There may be similar fixes for PD engines.

The Bosch MAF sensor fails with regularity. I had three in my car in less than 
50k miles. The solution is to use a Pierburg alternative, available from your 
local MB dealer. It is cheaper and apparently doesn't fail like the Bosch 
units, which are so sensitive that even an air filter changeout can release 
enough particles into the intake stream to damage the sensor. In Europe, the 
Bosch sensor failures were a huge problem affecting all diesels that used Bosch 
MAFs, which was almost everyone except MB and the French manufacturers (who use 
Pierburg or Thomson sensors).

The other chronic failure, clogging, is actually the INTAKE manifold that is 
clogged, not the exhaust. This is caused by soot from the exhaust gas 
recirculation (EGR), which mixes with oil from the positive crankcase 
ventilation (PCV) and causes heavy deposits on the intake manifold walls. It 
also can prevent starting of the car when what VW calls an anti-shudder valve 
(ASV) in the intake manifold jams with soot. The ASV is activated when you turn 
off the engine, and is basically a choke flap that cuts off airflow at the same 
time the fuel is cut. The soot buildup can jam the valve, preventing the engine 
from starting. This happens with no warning, and unless you know what to look 
for (and wiggle/smack), you may be stranded.

The intake clogging can be reduced through reduction of the EGR duty cycle. 
This can only be done through the car's VAG-COM interface. You can reduce oil 
fouling from the PCV by installing another MB part, a brass coil used on M117 
gas engines, and known as a "flame arrester". It is about $5 and easy to 
install. (Pic attached)

PS: As a preventive measure, if your brother ever has the timing belt changed 
on that car, he should ask to have the engine mount bolts physically returned 
to him in a bag. This will ensure that NEW bolts are used. They are stretch 
bolts (single use) and will FALL OUT if reused, leaving your oil pan and engine 
dragging on the ground!

According to my tech data book, you should have a 124.032 chassis,
which uses either 15 hole alloy wheels of 6½ J x 15 H2 ET 48, or 8
hole alloy wheels of 6½ J x 15 H2 ET 44 (with suspension modification
40-0050 "A"). The sport suspension used 7 J x 15 H2 ET 41 in both 15
and 8 holes.
The only other reference I see to wider wheels are 7x16s for the E420
and 8x16s for the E500.

Could the "T" in the "TJ" be a 7?

Tires for the 6½ rims are 195/65 ZR 15, and for the 7 rims are 205/60 ZR 15.

"bolt" next oil change, and switch to Mobil 1 if you are not using it

Ticking in the 117 engines, often is due to worn camshafts. I had bad tick
on one and I spent a lot of time and money replacing lifters when the
camshaft was problem. Basically my view point is that if the 117 ticks but
does not miss at idle then don't worry about it. When it gets bad enough to
cause drivability problems then you can worry. 

If the camshaft is the problem you will have to sort down the problem that
made camshaft go bad. For example jack legged mechanic not replacing oil
tubes correctly, bad oil pump, etc. Also if you remove the cam towers from a
117 be prepared to remove head and heil-core block. 

Thus there is nothing more expensive than a cheap gasser Mercedes with a
lifter tick...

My 420SEL got so screwed up by a jack legged mechanic that I had to shim the
cam towers such that they would not bind the camshaft too much. I can not
begin to tell you how bad they screwed it up.

So I know if I was under the hood of a gasser and heard ticking coming
from the rocker covers I would think a lifter was not getting proper
oiling, or was collapsing or something.

As I was under the 190D hood a bit ago attempting, yes attempting, to
check the transmission fluid - stupid thing that dipstick is - I heard
a somewhat intermittent tapping acompanying the normal klatta. Would
tick for maybe 10 seconds, then stop ticking, then start again after a
couple seconds.

Is this normal racket to be coming from the engine? Or is this
indicitive of a problem?

Unfortunately yes it is expensive over here, not sure why. Perhaps a 
lack of competition?
Anyway I was in the local GM dealer the other day and on the counter 
they had an advertising thingy for castrol oils, basicallly it was three 
sealed tubes about 4 inches long with oil and a ball bearing. One tube 
had synthetic, one had semi-synthetic and the last had dino.
The point of it was, when you tipped it over you could see the ball 
bearings 'race' each other down. The fully synthetic always won, the 
semi was half as fast and the dino took forever.

It is advisable to double check the torque on wheel bolts/nuts after a 
visit to the tire shop, unless you know that the shop do good work.
Another side affect of over tightened lugs is that if you have a flat it 
is hard to undo with the standard tire wrench, especially for the fairer 
sex. Nothing worse than going to the aid of a damsel in distress only to 
find that the job has you beat as well.

Why do you change your underpants? A few skid marks are not a problem, 
right?
The problem with a dirty engine is that some of the crud may 
block/partially block an oil passage, leading to problems.
Also a cleanish engine will stay cooler because oil is also a cooling 
agent. End of the day they are not designed to have half a tonne of 
sludge sitting in the engine and if it is possible to clean/keep clean 
it is advised to do so. If it was just in the bottom of the pan it would 
not be such a drama but when the top end is sitting under half an inch 
of black goo it is a worry.

I you lose your temper when you have a complaint, you've lost. You're
complaint is no longer valid. Best to approach it with "the gentle art of
verbal defense" remaining calmly focused on the actual complaint and how it
is going to be resolved. It can't become a personal offensive/defensive
thing no matter how much you want to question the person's lineage and
reason for existence.

Very true!  I wouldn't have to worry about bulb replacement that often 
as my primary TV usage consists of video gaming (one week I'll play for 
30 hours then go 6 weeks and only play for maybe 5 hours) and light 
actual TV watching.  On the other hand, my parents leave the TV on all 
day... even when they aren't watching it.  Drives me nuts!

stuff for the lifetime of the engine.
It seem that changing oil on a regular basis does a fine job of
keeping the Lifters/Oil Passages/ Oil pick-up/rockers etc in a
serviceably clean condition.
What is to be gained doing any more?

BTW, I switched my Benz from DINO to Mobile1 for the cold start
improvement at about 150Kmi.  I changed oil at 10Kmi, analysis at that
time shoed the oil was about 30% spent.  I began changing at 20KMI,
support by anaysis I could have gone to 25 or 30.  No leaks, no oil
related problems.

I went thru a similar situation with my 300D recently.  Had the tires 
rotated and the front end aligned.  When they put the lugs on they were 
wy to tight.  When I got home I couldn;t break them loose.  Took it back 
to the shop and a huge guy came around with a torque wrench (clicker type) 
and he wanted to prove he did it right - loosened one, and tightened it - 
pulled it until it clicked and continued another 1/8 turn or so, then gave 
it another pull for good measure for a total of 1/4 turn extra.  Instead of 
~90 #s it was probably closer to 120 or more.

I started to show him how to use a torque wrench but his attitude told me he 
didn;t want anyone to show him the right way.When he warps someones 
expensive rotors maybe he'll listen.

Again with my 2 cents...

I hear it all the time, "Well, that's what you get now-a-days." I'm sorry,
that's what some people "accept" now-a-days.

It seems many tradesmen don't take pride in their work. It's all about the
pay. Satisfaction and pride have nothing to do with it. Well sorry, last
general contractor who wanted me to cut corners (as he does) I had just this
conversation and I wound up refusing to sub for him anymore. His wife called
saying I had hurt his feelings because I told him I was ashamed to be
associated with his work.

Those of us who actually find a sense of accomplishment in our work are
often called compulsive or anal retentive. I've been told "They have pills
for that you know. Nobody's gonna see the wire after the walls are up."

Word of mouth still goes a long way and I have a big mouth and a long
memory. Gary's Automotive in Candler, Gary and son, Todd are some of the
finest MB indies I've known. People like them I want to give business to for
I want them to make well and be rewarded for good service!

It seem that changing oil on a regular basis does a fine job of
keeping the Lifters/Oil Passages/ Oil pick-up/rockers etc in a
serviceably clean condition.
What is to be gained doing any more?

BTW, I switched my Benz from DINO to Mobile1 for the cold start
improvement at about 150Kmi.  I changed oil at 10Kmi, analysis at that
time shoed the oil was about 30% spent.  I began changing at 20KMI,
support by anaysis I could have gone to 25 or 30.  No leaks, no oil
related problems.

Do what I do in the 300DSL. Run conventional oil most of the time & mobil-1
once a year for a good cleaning. Since I started this, I've had no lifter
noise from the engine.

The basic problem is that people don't take pride in their work anymore, 
just do the basics and then expect a big fat pay cheque.
You can bet your boots that the person who did the sloppy window 
installation would scream blue murder if it happened to them, easy to 
see faults in others but hard to see own faults.

Around here a lot of government offices have notices on the counter that 
essentially say our staff does not have to
put up with you yelling or using obscenities etc., and will not do so. Being a 
customer service person in many of
these places means you deal with a lot of the crazies out there and take a fair 
amount of personal abuse. My wife
works in the main library at the university here and she occasionally has to 
tell a patron that they are out of
line and that she won't serve them so long as they insist upon being abusive. 
They usually go off in a huff but
come back hanging their head after calming down.
So, I think that when normal people deal with some of the counter folks, the 
counter folk are often ready for a
rampage because it just happens too often.

me the itinerary and to get his manger and that it was not too much to
ask - so just do it! He replied "excuse me? did you just tell me just
do it?!!"

The point is the guy knew from experience that he could treat
customers that way - he held the power.

The most amazing experiences I have had have been one particular
little independetly-run vehicle licensing office in Rochester, MN.
They were always respectful and helpful and most of the time jovial
and downright friendly. Now there was a proper power balance.

The thing that I find even more disturbing is the effort that they put out to 
convince you that they do provide
good service and care etc.

A few years ago I had my old Suburban repaired after a minor accident. I took 
it to a local body shop that I had no
experience with but had heard good things about.

The fellow took me out to the vehicle after they called to advise it was ready 
and I went to pick it up. They did a
lousy job of the repair. The front bumper was not mounted straight. I called it 
to his attention and he gave me
some line of bull that Chevy's are like that and there is nothing they could do 
about it. I said give me a few
minutes with a die grinder to elongate the holes and I will fix it myself. He 
remained adamant that they could do
nothing. There was also a small dent in the leading face of the hood. I 
commented that they hadn't repaired it. He
then stated that was not part of the job or some such nonsense. It certainly 
was as it was caused by the same
accident that put me in their shop in the first place. By then I was angry 
enough to tell him to stick it in his
ear and leave. The vehicle was old and imperfect anyway but it still made me 
annoyed to think that they hadn't done
a good job but wanted me to pat them on the back anyway. When I got in the 
truck there was a card on the dash that
said they had kept the interior clean and had not changed the settings on the 
seat or the radio etc as a courtesy
to me. There was also a survey form that they wanted me to return to them to 
tell them if they were doing a good
job. A few days later a nice young lady called to ask me in a cheery voice if 
everything was ok and if I was still
happy with their work. She hadn't a clue what to say when I suggested she speak 
to the fellow who had taken me out
to the truck about my complaints at the time that they hadn't done a good job 
and his denial of the facts. They
haven't called again and I won't go near the place again. Unfortunately, I 
think a lot of these places sell
themselves to stupid people by kissing the proverbial you know what. Then 
people go around saying how nice these
folks are and that leaves poor suckers like me thinking that they do good work. 
Go ahead and smmooze me if you must
but fix things properly or you are wasting your time.

FYI long term use (like years and 30,000+ miles) slowed the rear main seal leak 
on my '96 Dodge Dakota (210,000 miles and still kickin).
It was to about 1 qt in 500 miles and now (uhh 5 years and probably 100,000 
miles later) its more like 1 qt in 2500 miles or more (mileage not quarts).

Mobil 1 10w30, changed every time I remember, probably 8,000 or so miles.

that way usually learned it from someone above them.

A projector is a great idea as long as you budget for a replacement
bulb at $300+ every year, more often if you have kids or other family
members who leave the TV on all day.  I went through that thought
process, figured out it was a lot cheaper in the long run to spring
for a big LCD up front.  Finally went with a Philips 47" 1080p for
$1800 from Best Buy.  Couldn't be happier with it.  Better picture and
much lighter and more compact than what it replaced (a 46" Mitsubishi
rear-projection, one of the first 1080p TVs but no great shakes now).

The room doesn't even have to be darkish. A projector can be
quite flexible. You can even get different images sizes
depending on what you are watching!

You have a point there and I have to agree.  I was thinking some more 
about this, and reminded myself of taking the truck to them back a few 
months ago when the back glass blew out (design fault, recall on some 
but not all, same design).  I worked them a bit on replacing it (was 
gonna be like $900), kinda alluded to a conversation I had with my 
lawyer buddy about similar problems, and they got right on it, replaced 
it for free a couple days later.  They did not have to do that really 
(although I got the sense that they had been doing a lot of them not as 
recall but quietly acknowledging the problem), and did not give me much 
of a hard time, so I was thankful for that.

I guess things balance out, I have spent too many cycles obsessing 
already.  I sent an email to the head guy, will see if I hear back.  I 
might call him to whinge a bit, though at this point that is all it is 
cause I don't want to waste any more time with them or the issue.

According to Wiki, the 1983-87 6.9 made 170hp, and the 88-91 7.3 NA IDI
made 180. Pretty close to the way I remembered it. No idea how the GM
was rated, except I seem to recall the 4.3 being rated at 85hp when my
Dad had a 1983 Cutlass Ciera. His made nowhere near 85hp, (0-60 in 28 sec)
but apparently a good example was a lot quicker.

They have name brands -- Sony, Philips, Samsung.  I think the Samsungs 
are about the best value.  They had some huge ones there.  Somewhere I 
read that Costco doubles the warranty, don't know about Sams.

Not only NO!  But H _ _ L NO you should not just get over it!  People 
getting over it is exactly what caused everyone to do away with I grew up 
believing was customer service.

Why should Wal Mart hire more cashiers when we are happy just gripping about 
standing in line?  Why should a service center bother cleaning a window when 
instead they could be earning more "Got Ya" bucks off another Joe?, etc. 
etc.  etc.

People tolerate the bad service and the companies save money it is a win/win 
situation for them.

Sounds like you experienced the "DMV Syndrome", which is defined as:
They think you need them and that they don't need you, so they don't
have to be nice.

Not trying to stir the embers, but I am a huge stickler for customer
service, and I would be ticked too. Just remember it probably wasn't
personal.

Ideally you want to use an oil with lots of detergents thats good at suspending 
crud and depositing it in the filter. Synthetic oil is great at that.
However that said I'm sure good diesel oils are also quite good.
My 190D was badly gunked up. Early oil analysis indicated very high iron 
levels. However after a couple changes and hard driving the iron levels started 
to come down and now (nearly 2 years later) are normal at 10,000 mile intervals.

If I had another badly gunked up engine I'd probably run conventional oil in it 
and change at 3,000 miles. If that sample showed high levels of any bad stuff 
I'd run conventional again until the gunk levels (iron and such) came under 
control, then I'd switch to synthetic and work up to a longer interval.

In recent issues, some have remarked that Mobil 1 or (maybe) 
similar synthetic oils will clean out interior engine nasties, or 
words to that effect.

Is that for real?  I'm talking about the black almost crusty crap 
that may accumulate on interior engine surfaces.  I'd like to 
hear from someone who claims to have actually done it.

Assuming it is for real, how does one use it for this purpose?  

Change oil and filter, obviously.  Then run for how long?  How 
many miles/change oil and filter cycles are thought needful?

In a past life I knew a fellow who would pour the same gallon 
of diesel through an engine repeatedly for this purpose with engine 
initially warm but not running.  He would change the diesel when 
he thought it was nasty enough and quit when he stopped getting 
black nasties dissolved or suspended in fresh diesel.d

Does anyone have any comment on that? 

Does anyone have a recommended other procedure for the 
same purpose?

big case of cables that says something like VAG 1598 or something like that. 
I will take a picture but what the hell is it.  If I cant use it on anything

IIRC, you have to buy a ~$400 setup that allows you to re-program the 
factory settings.  You basically set exhaust gas recirc. flow to zero 
and all is well.

I wonder if those no name ones at sams will last though?  Somebody posted a 
list of good brands and ones to stay away from.  Might have to see if I can 
find that.  Yea, I think he said it was for cooling or something.  I guess 
it projects thru this fluid and if it clouds the pic is not as good. 
Anyway, he said those Phillips Magnavox tvs were junk when new.

cheap.  normally you can get a service manual and used parts easily
and cheaply on ebay.

it's like old mac laptops.  $1200 to fix via apple.  $27 to fix yourself.

too, temp cycling kills components.

them over good.  You might want to wait a coupla weeks to just before 
Christmas when they are reaching hard, then get a 30day price guarantee 
and keep an eye on post-Christmas prices.

wanting a flat screen for the BR, they had some good prices on Vizios so 
I got a 32" LCD 720P.  The display had no price on it, but there was a 
folded up paper there next to it, which I looked at to see if it was a 
price.  Turns out it was an internal email listing about 40 products 
they were putting out with killer prices, on Friday ("THIS IS BIG!!" it 
said).  Those TVs were on the list.  While I was looking at it, some 
other guy came by and got one also.  It looks very nice, kind of a 
mid-range quality and price it appears, and has some interesting 
features.  Good for BR.  It also found a bunch of the digital cable 
channels and HD channels too, without a cable box, but on weird numbers 
so I have to make up a menu for it.  Or I might have to get another box 
now.  They had some cheap DVD players too that upconvert and have HDMI 
connections, have not hooked that up yet.

[MBZ] 126 Hazard Switch

Not that I've had to use it, but I cannot get the
hazard lught function on my 83 300SD to function. 
I've tried two switches and checked, replaced fuses
with no effect.  Turn the switch "on" and nothing, and
no turn indicators.  With the swicth in the "off"
position turn indicators work fine.  Definitely not
the same set-up as the 123.

Anybody have word of wisdom or guidance?

[MBZ] OT, fluid in a TV?

So my Phillips Magnavox 60" bigscreen that I have had for about 8 years has 
been acting up.  Had somebody come out and look at it today and they say it 
needs a new high voltage (?) signal board, and some sort of cooling fluid or 
something is cloudy which causes the picture to be not as good as it should be. 
 I have never heard of fluid in a TV.  They want $1200 to fix it so I will 
probably be looking for a HDTV from the info I got in the last thread about 
TV's.  I imagine I will go the DLP route.

It's a slow process.  Just switch to synthetic.  If you know that the
motor is really dirty change the filter often, maybe every thousand
miles or so, a few times.  May take tens of thousands of miles to
really clean everything out.

No, I've never torn down an engine to verify that it's clean.  But
enough knowledgable people (e.g. Marshall) have made the cleaning
claim about Mobil 1 that I have no reason to doubt it.

I've heard of using transmission fluid (e.g. drain the oil and fill
with transmission fluid), and running at idle speed only, to clean up
stuck rings, etc.  I don't think I'd do it unless the only other
option was a rebuild, but some people have reported success.

Dodge and Ford because they have better customer service.  I deal with crap 
like this all the time at work.  Start the $#!T ball as high as you can and

Exactly.  There is no service ethic anywhere, anymore, that I can detect 
among the proles.  There was only one service writer there, a woman, who 
appeared to be marginally competent but could not leave her desk/phone, 
etc (though she did say she could go try to find someone, but it baffled 
her when I suggested if she could do that then maybe she could just deal 
with it)  and the checkout chicas barely hablaed anglais and didn't seem 
to understand why this was an issue, so that was a waste too.  Anyway, 
daughter unit had taken off by then, so moot issue at that point.

Oh well, enough on this...

I believe the computer requires more trickery in order to disable the
EGR.  IIRC, the computer throws a fault code and goes into limp mode
if it detects that the EGR is no longer functioning.  I'm sure some of
the 'puter wizzes over at the TDI Club have figured out a way around
this by now.

I don't know who you talked to wheh you picked it up, but I can't figure
out why that person didn't just grab a bottle of something and a rag
and clean your window right then and there. It's what I would have
done, and it wouldn't have mattered if I was a manager, a writer, or
even a mechanic who had nothing to do with your truck.
