I always select the one Tom mentioned. I find it very helpful. However,
if I've closed all the windows when I exit I have it set up to open certain
pages. I accomplish that by opening those I want and then in the Home Page

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] 4 year compaq service rant/question

I had a similar problem with my computer and it turned out to be one of my
usb ports and/or my card reader. These are the kinds of things you don't
bring to the repair guy so it only happens at home. Look for something
like that and see if it makes a difference.

 Hi folks,

I'm sorry for not replying sooner. This is the first time I've been on a
computer to type; my non-smart phone can be a pain for all but short
emails, and I keep hitting the clear button once too often!

My computer tech guy, David, is wonderful. He didn't charge me a thing. I
used to go to Best Buy, because that's where we buy our computers, so
that's why I checked there when neither of us could come up with anything.

Anyhow. Last Tuesday night I was going along like normal, having Firefox
and Thunderbird and Trillian and Avast and Word... you get the picture. I
moved the mouse to change windows, and it froze. Then everything froze. I
did have a blinking cursor on trillian, which I had just left - the
Trillian window was still open - but that was it. I waited a bit, pressed
escape, and so forth, all to no avail.

Then I hard rebooted. Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I can't remember if I had to go to
the power button or not. Didn't come up on reboot, but gave me long beeps.
Googled that on the phone and found it was likely memory. Ok, no big deal,
texted my friend and decided to run it over to David in the morning.

Checked Wens morning, nothing but the beeps. Took it to David. He plugs
it in; she boots right up. No charge. I take her back home, get
everything plugged back in, nothing, except different beeps. Short and
long. Call David, let him listen - these sound like motherboard. Not what
I want to hear, but not much I can do about it. Pack her up, and back over
to David. He takes it; there's 11+ people ahead of me, plus he has to go
set up some networks, etc. Figure on a few days.

Friday afternoon he calls. She boots fine; he's had multiple programs up
and running, no problems. Avast has updated and scanned and found
nothing. He has a OCC or an ICC, some program like that that puts the
machine through everything and anything, some parts at 110%. Passed
everything with flying colors. So he's baffled.

No charge. Bring her home, same thing. Sometimes she will boot, but if
she does, then she freezes either right then or when I try to move the
mouse. I ran the Compaq diagnostics before letting Windows boot, and she
 passed with flying colors.

I've moved the plug in USB modem to the back USB ports. I've tried moving
the whole system to another circuit in my bedroom. Sometimes it's just
black screen. No beeps again, though. Sometimes I get the bios screen,
and it says to wait for Windows to continue, and sometimes after a several
minutes wait, it does. But I get the same thing - freezes.

I have finally given up. I don't want to mess up the hard drive. I have an
XP computer that I bought at a church rummage sale, but I've found out that
the girl did not take off the password as she said she had. So, after I get
Choral Society paid for for winter semester, hopefully this coming Tuesday,
I'm going to see if David will at least break the password to the small
computer and backup the hard drive on the sick computer for me, just in
 case.

Thanks for the replies, and again, I'm really sorry about not getting to
the library quicker. We've had some other things break lately, never rains
at our house unless it pours!

 Take care,
 Theresa

but here are a couple thoughts:
I don't think most people consider PC's disposable. Maybe what the
Best Buy guy meant was that since new computers can cost as little as
$500, you have to think twice about paying a shop $300 in repairs -
especially if the PC is 4 or more years old. I think Best Buy charges
WY too much for repairs. It sounds like your tech guy charges a lot
too. I think most people have a techie type person somewhere in their
orbit who will gladly help out. Is there anyone of your friends or
family that knows a friend of a friend who is tech savvy and can help
for free? Just a thought. I help all my relatives and friends gratis.

Anyway... not knowing what your PC is doing at home but not at the shop,
it's hard to suggest a fix. One free thing that would be a last resort
before paying a shop money would be to reformat the hard drive and
reinstall windows from scratch. Lots of times computers get s

  everything and start from scratch

Win8 comes with a feature called Hyper-Virtualization. Basically this
creates a virtual machine, which kind of takes a section of RAM and
makes your system think it is a separate hard drive. Then, you can
install XP as you normally would. Then you can install your old apps
just like you normally would, but they'll go into the virtual XP. This
all happens inside Win8. Supposedly, you'll be able to click the icon
of an XP program and it will automatically open in the virtual XP,
instead of Win8. In other words it's seamless and you won't even notice
 you're leaving Win8.

Free virtual machine software has been around for years. Other free
programs to create a VM are Oracle Virtual Box, or VMWare (I forget the
company). The downside to VM's is that they are pretty geeky to set
up. To be honest I've never done one, but the instructions can be a bit
daunting - even the Hyper-V included with Win8. Another downside is
that lots of people report they can be flakey - meaning there are
glitches like XP not seeing USB devices you plug in, and possible probs
with mouse operation, etc. Also, you mention games. VM's, as far as I
know, don't support 3D, so most current major games won't run on them.
Simple games probably will. VM's are mainly designed for developers who
write programs and need to quickly test them in different operating
 systems.

Win8 also has a compatibility mode which is much simpler to use. You
just tell Win8 to run your program in XP Mode and it will try to trick
the program into thinking you have XP. Win7 also has this feature, and
I've tried it, but still some of my XP programs won't run - possibly
 they've improved it in Win8.

Holly, I know you mentioned you'll have an AMD processor. Some AMD's
won't support Hyper-V. If you give the exact model I can check it out.
I think all Intel i-core chips will support it. You def have ample RAM
and HD space to run a VM!
So the main downside to using a VM for your XP apps is (for me) the
installation of the VM. Here's a site with a good explanation of Hyper-V:

 http://windows.appstorm.net/how-to/virtualization/is-hyper-v-in-windows-8-worth-using/

But don't despair! I believe MOST of your software will run fine on
Win8. Most of mine did. Holly, I'm quite certain your version of Word
or MS Office will run fine - mine did. I don't think MS wanted to
alienate and anger a zillion old office users, so they made sure it
would work. There might be a couple apps that fail - but you can find
replacements for them like I did. It'll be ok. :-)

 Donk

  Donk,
You've been talking about dual booting but I've heard Win8 has a virtual
machine running XP. I thought that could run my old games or programs. Is
 that wrong?

  Thanks

Yes, I have Open Office. It works great except when you're trying to
organize about 37 different plays from 11 different authors to send to a

[A-1-Computer_Tech] New Computer

2013-07-22 Thread Holly
I continue to have trouble accessing my all programslist and have
problems with sound. I had planned to add RAM and a new sound card in my 7
year old computer. The computer guy I spoke with said the sound might be
on my motherboard and that could be a sign that it's days are numbered.
I've held onto it this long because I didn't want to upgrade Windows from
XP. I have so many old programs that I'm not sure will work on Windows 8.
But the slowness of my computer and these other issues make me realize I
have to bite the bullet and get going.

I always have my computers built to my needs and have gotten an estimate.
I remember reading somewhere that you should definitely not get a AMD
processor and that the best was an Intel something. He has listed Intel
Core i5 3330 CPU. Also a Gigabyte 1155 Motherboard. The rest seems good,
a Western Digital hard drive, for example. I'm also getting a cover for
one of my old hard drives that holds a lot of my art stuff so I can
selectively access it without loading up my new 1 TB hard drive. Yikes!

Any other tips you can give me. I'm stalling a bit because it really
worries me about my programs. I can, however, keep the old one because I
won't be removing the C: drive. Just my E: drive which was one from my
former computer.

Okay, this morning when I opened my computer I had the message asking if I
wanted to open in Safe Mode or go to Restore. I decided to go Safe Mode to
see if the list was there and it was. Then I went to restore from
accessories on the list and restored back to June 4. The computer closed
and then opened and, after a considerable wait, the list appeared. Happy
Day. Okay, I started to do my usual and opened Firefox to check my gmail
accounts and everything was super slow (actually it's been that way for a
couple of days)and although I finally opened gmail and looked at my
messages I haven't been able to reply. It says Loading rich text and
shows Loading but nothing happens. I'm able to open my forums but can't
 reply to emails.

I've been aware that I probably need more Ram since I currently have 2G
and my computer will take 4G. Also my sound card is failing or has failed.
If I could remember how to open the box I could probably take care of this
but in the meantime I don't really want to be without the computer for any
length of time. Sorry this is so long. I'm running XP and that's the
reason I'm hanging on because so many of my programs won't run with the
newer Windows versions. I usually get a new computer built every five
years and it's at least six now.

Okay, I have Trend Micro on my computer and a Spy program and the scans
don't show anything wrong but do you think it's some failing on the
 computer itself

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Missing All Programs List

2013-06-13 Thread Holly
Thanks, Donk. I know I have too many programs and don't know what half of
them are. Need to do a clean out but I've avoided it because I don't want
to remove something that's doing something I may want or need.

I went to the site and went through my start up list and unchecked quite a
few things. I still have several items that need to be run because they're
timed to do things at certain times. By the way the site is nolonger going
to be updated and they linked to this site that will be keep current.

You'll probably want to update your records.

I agree you might wanna stick with XP for a while. When I finally
upgraded to Win7 64-bit, there were quite a few programs I had to
trash. Most of my programs still worked, but a few didn't. Plus, I had
to trash a printer and some other hardware that didn't have Win7
drivers. I think the main prob is that I got the 64bit version -
instead of the 32-bit, but 64-bit is where the future is heading so no
point buying a 32 bit version.

I was going to say that 2GB of ram should be fine for you... but then
you mentioned you do a lot of graphic work and open lots of browser
tabs. So... I do think adding some ram would help speed things up.

Of course you know that a main reason for a slow computer is stuff
running in the background. So go to Start, type MSCONFIG, click the
Startup tab and take a look at how many programs have check marks next
to them. Each one of these starts running at bootup, and uses up system
resources. Uncheck any that you don't absolutely need running all the
time (most can be manually started when you need them). Here's a
website that will explain what each one does:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php Just type the program name into
 the search box.

They say there isn't any such file. So I decided to try, as you said, to

If not, how about using System Restore to go back to a date previous to
when this problem started. Start, type RSTRUI.EXE in the run/search
 window.

Other than that, your symptom likely indicates a pretty serious problem
with your windows system files - or a virus. Have you tried booting
into Safe Mode to see if the list appears normally? If so, it might
indicate you've got a background program or virus interfering with the

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Email program suggestion? - just about ready to scream

2013-06-08 Thread Holly
Teresa, why do you need anything more than Gmail? I have other accounts,
one from my domain, the one from my provider, etc. but I use Gmail for
everything. I have three separate accounts for various uses and then
filter the messages into folders. It works very well for me. One good
feature is that they sort spam away from your mailbox so you can either
delete them periodically or have them automatically go away after a certain
period of time.

No, you don't have to close your ears, I'll scream quietly, I promise. :-)

While I used to love my Thunderbird email program, I started looking
through the folders tonight. It's been a few days since I really checked
to see what I've received. I don't have a clue about what the program
is doing/has done. Several emails I have multiple copies for, some as
many as five; the filters work when they want to, and aren't even
unchecking as they used to when there was a problem.

I spent at least 15 minutes again today deleting emails from Gmail
online because either it or Tbird or both can't receive/send the message
that messages have been deleted - so when Tbird picks up, the messages
are still in Gmail (we decided once that it was probably dial-ups fault
 - and I have POP3).

I have, while Tbird was off, gone in under Windows Explorer and looked
at the data folders - there are folders and emails in there that I
deleted ages ago, from all 3 of the accounts that I get.

You all know how I feel about not being able to automatically sort the
filters. HP's diagnostics says my hard drive passes all the tests.

I scan regularly with my avast!, and ran the online scanner with bit
defender a couple of days ago, and both report that I am clean. Getting
ready to run bd again, because avast!'s daily run says I'm fine.

I loved Eudora. For a long while Tbird was a great replacement. (I'm
running Windows 7 Home, by the way.) I get 2-400 emails a day.

I love that Thunderbird is non-Microsoft. I like the ease of
transferring and adding and subtracting folders. I like the relative
ease of backing up my filters and data. I wanted/want something that's
actually being worked on, for support.

Any suggestions for replacement? I would definitely appreciate them. I
have several folders, and definitely some to keep emails, so I don't
feel I can just try programs randomly.

I want something reliable, not Microsoft, where I can sort filters
automatically, it won't lose emails, backs up at least decently well,
can handle several accounts (at least 3) with many emails a day, and
 sorts/filters like it's supposed to. I suppose I'm looking for a dream
 program?

 Thanks
 Theresa

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Dual Monitors

2013-04-15 Thread Holly
I defaulted everything and the distortion is gone. The only thing is that
the icons are tiny but that's okay. In everything except the desktop, I
can increase the size of things with CTRL/+. You know the funny thing is
that the latest update of Firefox has an Option pull down but doesn't seem
to have the ones they used to. I thought I could change the text size that
way before. At least I can't find it but CTRL/+ works.

Oh, by the way, both monitors are Samsung the older one is SyncMaster 9333N
and although I saw it listed somewhere I can't find the name right now of
the newer one.

Once again, Donk, thank you so much. Don't know what I'd do without you
when I get into these pickles.

I would try going into NCP and go down the list for each category. Each
category should show an option (usually at the top) to reset default

defaults. But of course leave the dual monitor category setup the way

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Dual Monitors

2013-04-14 Thread Holly
Hi,

I thought I'd get a jump on things since my computer couldn't find the
drivers and so went to download the new one. Unfortunately, (as is my
usual experience) they came up with a thing about having to have Java on my
computer although I do have the latest version but I reinstalled it anyway
and went back but it still came up with missing the Java and I can't get
any farther.

By the way, I now have two primary monitors since it evidently doesn't
recognize my Multi-Mon program, That may be fixed when I get the driver
though.

Oh, and another by the way, the text is fine now. I'm not sure about the
screen resolution because things look kind of pulled out but that may be
normal and I just don't remember. My screens are wide-angle.

Okay, how to we get the new driver?

Holly

PS: I want to be sure you know, once again you are saving my life or at
least it looks like we're heading that way. I was going to say I love
you but that may be going too far.

Right-click the NVidia entry and choose Uninstall or Remove. Click

Let it boot all the way to the desktop and wait till you see the message

Hopefully that'll fix the display prob and maybe the text prob too. :-)
If not we can try downloading the newest drivers from the NVidia site or
your computer maker's support site. Or uninstalling all the NVidia

 Good luck,

the correct monitors but when I click identify the numbers appear on the
wrong monitors. This is so strange because it was fine until yesterday

I don't think it happened when I booted up but sometime during the day.

I then went to NVIDIA Control Panel (instead of typing this out I'll call
it NCP, okay?) and received two error messages one right after the other

Can't open NCP because an older version is already running.

Close the NCP that is currently running, then try again.

As you can imagine I have no idea how to close the NCP and then what do

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Dual Monitors

2013-04-14 Thread Holly
I thought we were in trouble. I did the uninstall you recommended and
didn't record the full name of the program and it no longer appears on my
computer. Fortunately, I recently printed a System Resources Report and,
there it is NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS

My computer is custom built running XP as I mentioned before.

On Add/Remove Programs NVIDIA nView 135.50 is listed. No NCP.

drivers from the nvidia support site (instead of your pc maker's site).
After we get that info, I would go into Contol Panel, Add/Remove

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Dual Monitors

2013-04-14 Thread Holly
Okay, I have two monitors with the primary on the left and the secondary
on the right as it was before. The only things that aren't the same is
the resolution distorts the screen so, for example the Firefox icon is not
round. When I first installed the NVIDIA it was round but with the fooling
around to get the two monitors separate and not showing the same thing I
guess the resolution changed as well. What I'm going to do is wait and not
do any more until I reboot and see what I have.

I use John's Background switcher and it's working now too so that's great.

I'll let you know how it is tomorrow. Thanks so much, Donk. I will get
back to you on the javascript thing but I'm not really sure if the problem
is still there because I haven't noticed it during all of this. I didn't
get anything else done today but I feel like we accomplished something.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Dual Monitors

2013-04-13 Thread Holly
I have two Samsung monitors and the one on the left has been set as the
primary and the one on the right the secondary. All of a sudden yesterday
when I started up they are reversed. I've looked everywhere I can think of
to see how to change it mostly because the tight one is older and is a bit
narrower. If this weren't the case I could just move them around on my
desktop except the cord to the left one isn't long enough for me to get it
where it needs to be. Do you have any ideas about how this might have
happened and how I can get it back to where it's been for several years.

Another issue which appears to be a Google/gmail one is that this text I'm
trying to type is really raggedy. Doesn't appear to be happening anywhere
else except here.

Thank you so much for your help.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Taskbar

2012-11-17 Thread Holly
I remember several years ago this happened to me and someone here, I
believe, helped me. The task bar suddenly went vertically over to the left
side of the screen instead of horizontally across the bottom. I've tried
every kind of dragging I can think of and looked every where to try to find
a way to fix it but nothing so far. In some ways it's nice over there out
of the way but there are things I can't do with it there. I have two
monitors and one thing is a right click on something and have a choice to
move it to the other monitor.

Any ideas?

Holly

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] flash drive security

2011-07-17 Thread Holly
My suggestion, get another flash drive and take this one with you and either
carry it or lock it up. Not being facetious and I'm not sure how old you
are so maybe mom has a point in keeping track of your stuff but it would
seem to be a logical solution.

 Subject: [A-1-Computer_Tech] All Programs List

My computer was in the shop for 9 days and the final decision was the
culprit was a usb card reader I used to download my photographs. Now that
it's back it's running better than it has for a long time but I have a
problem I need to solve. My programs list is running at least six pages and
I can only access half of page 5 and none of page 6. I tried making the box
larger and that doesn't work. I remember a long time ago there was a way to
combine programs under one label, for example all my Corel programs and my
Epson ones. I'm sure I could benefit from uninstalling some of these but I
can't see them and so don't know which ones to uninstall.

 Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Flash Player

2010-11-16 Thread Holly
Thanks so much for responding, Donk.

No, I did all that already and it doesn't block the download of the file and
even so I closed it and tried downloading a fresh copy just in case. The
insecure comment was from Secunia Personal Software Inspector. It tells me
when programs are insecure, end of life or patched among other things.

Anyway, the problem lies when I try to execute the download. Everything
goes okay until the Adobe Flash Player Installer opens and the Install
button isn't accessible. The Read whatever and the Quit button are
active. I've been through everything I can find everywhere and at one point
they say do a manual install but when I go that road the Adobe FP Installer
still opens to the same result.

I'm Flash-Player-less right now and can't access a bunch of stuff I use
regularly.

Any further ideas?

No, there isn't any box, just a link to read the agreement and that takes me
to a pdf list of license agreements and the first time I opened the Adobe
Flash Player file, I looked for an okay button but there wasn't one there.
I just went back and to try it again, and now the pdf doesn't even come up.
It stalls and says Stopped at the bottom.

I know we can't send screenshots here but I think I've described it pretty

Donk, I just heard from the Adobe Flash Player forum as follows and you were
right, it just was so invisible:

Again! This problem comes up about once a week. I have asked the
developers to change that terrible color scheme on the installation panel,
but so far they have not gotten around to it...

There is a little checkbox on the left of 'I have read and agree...' that
must be checked before the INSTALL button becomes active:

Now we all know. Thank you so much, Donk. You are a blessing. I'll be
writing some of my other problems, probably tomorrow.

Hi, folks,

I have a number of problems but the latest and most debillitating is that I

followed instructions and uninstalled the ones I had on my computer. It
took a bunch of tries and a special program Adobe offered to be sure it was

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] How does one email an entire folder?

2010-11-02 Thread Holly
It would be wonderful if these discs were permanent places to save things
but they aren't. I'm not sure how long they last but it isn't a place to
leave things forever. Each piece of media, from floppy disks on had
increased shelf life but we're still not where these things are foolproof.

or do you have to email contents of each folder?

This emailing and saving isnt quite that easy-LOL

you can only do one folder at a time-which is quite annoying

There has got to be a better way!

 your

I have a Maxtor backup but I know those drives can also go bad and If I
 have

So i was also thinking of using online backup services-but I dont really
 care

So how does the idea of just saving the files to yourself via email and
 saving
 the emails as backup?

What does anyone think about that?

Apparently it is giving you false positives on some normal, standard,
 windows updates.
So I would just ignore the Secunia warning.

But if you are saying that you aren't able to install some MS updates -
like the .net Framework, I would first try lowering or temporarily
disabling some of your security and anti-virus settings to see if you're
able to download and install them - then change the settings back if you
 want.
There have been some known issues about being unable to install the .net
Framework, but MS suggests disabling your security apps while trying to
install to see if that works.

 Good luck,

Update on it, which that *newer* program depends on to be able to run,
you are receiving the error message when it doesn't find it. That is
really the only explanation that fits your situation, as Mscoree.dll
does not belong on your system.

I've forgotten if Windows 98 had Event Viewer on it or not, but if it
does, you can use it to get a more detailed error message, which will
tell you which program is attempting to load Mscoree.dll. Go to Start,
Run, and type eventvwr.msc on the command line of the Run dialog, then
hit Enter, or click the OK button with your mouse.

The Event Viewer will come up, and any errors will have an icon on their
line in the log file, that looks like a red circle with a white X in it
next to the word error. Right click the line the error message is on,
and select Properties from the pop up menu to see a more detailed
description of what the error is about, which will hopefully have the
name of the offending program in it.

At that point, you will know which program is attempting to load the
missing .dll file, and can proceed to uninstall it, which will eliminate
 the error message.

There is also the possibility that some hacker wrote his virus code to
depend on the Mscoree.dll as well, and you have become infected with a
virus or trojan, that was targeted at the newer versions of Windows.
Either way,, a look in the Event Viewer's log file will point out the
culprit so you can get rid of it.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] DeFault Settings

2009-01-22 Thread Holly
I'm grabbing on to this subject for a couple of reasons. I am running XP
Pro and don't find the Manage, right click, My Computer. I go to My
Computer the old fashioned way (or whatever) and don't see disk management
anywhere. Can you direct me?

Second, I have two USB hubs, one an old one with 4 connections where I get
the warning that I should use the newer version. I also have a new one with
4 connections. My flash drives only appear when I plug them in the old
connections so I don't have the advantage of the faster speeds. (That is
the advantage, isn't it?)

When I try to see which connections are which I'm completely lost. Here is
a picture of my drive setup.

It lists all these drives (G through J) and then my external drive is K and
the two flash drives pick up the later letters L and M. First of all I
don't have any G, H, I and J drives and how can I get them removed from the
list. I think that will then move the others up to those letters?

Thanks for your help.

How do I change The default settings so it is primary burner.

I'm not certain that there IS a primary burner. I guess it may depend
on the drive letters, but also whether the drive has a disk in it. If
the machine sees your external burner I think that your burning
software should be able to access it. One thing that might help is to
set the drive letter to one that is ahead of the other burner(s). Do
this by going to Manage, Right click My Computer then select 'disk
management'. Now right click the drive whose drive letter you want to
change. If one of the burners has a lower drive letter you may need to
change that letter to a higher one first. One of the options when you
right click a drive is to 'change drive letter'. The OS assigns drive
letters at startup Unless a drive has been given a drive letter by
this process. Of course if the drive is not plugged in another drive
may be given it's drive letter, so it's best to assign letters to all
 the burners.

I can't say that this will improve the changes that your burning
software will default to the lower drive letter, but maybe it will
help if the drive has a burnable disk in it. :-)

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] DeFault Settings

2009-01-22 Thread Holly
Thanks, Trouble. There's a further choice, Computer Management/Storage and
then you get to Disk Management. Just for the heck of it I tried to change
the drive letters for the USB ports but that didn't work. Now I'm going to
see about deleting the extras and maybe that will move them all up.

I looked and I can delete them from the Device Manager location but I will
wait to hear what you all think about that. It appears to me that if I plug
a flash drive in it will just bring up another letter so the four removable
disk drives could be deleted without a problem Of course, that's a moot
point since the one remaining usb slot on the new hub doesn't see the
drive. It works fine with my microphone, my camera cards and the external
drive so that's okay.

I'm grabbing on to this subject for a couple of reasons. I am running XP
Pro and don't find the Manage, right click, My Computer. I go to My
Computer the old fashioned way (or whatever) and don't see disk
 management
  anywhere. Can you direct me?

Second, I have two USB hubs, one an old one with 4 connections where I get
the warning that I should use the newer version. I also have a new one
 with
4 connections. My flash drives only appear when I plug them in the old
connections so I don't have the advantage of the faster speeds. (That is
  the advantage, isn't it?)

When I try to see which connections are which I'm completely lost. Here is
a picture of my drive setup.

It lists all these drives (G through J) and then my external drive is K
 and
the two flash drives pick up the later letters L and M. First of all I
don't have any G, H, I and J drives and how can I get them removed from
 the

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Deleting

2009-01-17 Thread Holly
Jim and Stacy,

I think her question might have been that whoever she was talking with was
confused with her objective. I think she just wanted to delete files to
make her computer faster and they were talking about someone accessing the
files later like if you gave the computer to someone else. Then a program
would have to be used to overwrite those files.

Or am I mixing two queries?

Holly

 STACY,

what I did previously, it is still there.

What you mean I assume is that files that you deleted seem to have
 come back.
Two possible explanations for that: a. those files got created again
or b. they did not get deleted.

I would say that either is possible. One thing never to do is to
delete a file that has an extension of .exe, .dll, .com, .bat,
etc. .tmp files are temporary files and can usually be deleted with
impunity. Cookies are not actually required, and not usually harmful.
Whether they slow down a computer is not always clear. If the OS has
to go through a large number of files as it does it's thing, that can
 slow things down.

My understanding of the most common software things that slow down
computers are those programs that are run at startup and that stay
running. When you first get your computer there are usually not many
of those. When you install new programs the installer often loads a
lot of junk to run at startup. Most are not necessary, even for the
 program you are installing.

Here's how to get rid of many of those. Run MSCONFIG. To do this go to
Start [bottom left of screen] then click run. This shows a box where
you can type text. Type msconfig then click OK. A program will open
that has several tabs, click 'startup' to view what programs run on
startup. Notice that these items have check marks, these can be
clicked to remove them. The names of these files can be confusing.
None of these is absolutely necessary for the running of your
computer. You could uncheck them all and then restart the computer. A
few of them will be replaced, like ctfmon [or something like that] No
point in unchecking it, it will be replaced with an unchecked one. You
can research start up programs on Google, just type 'start up' or
 something like that.

Of course sometimes it is hardware problems that cause a slow
computer. Temperature is one of those, a computer running hot can run
slow as a result. Not enough memory [that's memory not hard drive
space] can cause a slow computer. One gigabyte or memory [ram] tends
to be optimum for most computer. Adding more is not likely to help much.

One sure fix is to start a new account like someone else mentioned. I'm
not a big fan of Hotmail - I've always found that I got the most spam
from them than from any other email service. You might try Google's
 Gmail instead.

Other than that I'm not sure how an ad is being attached to your
emails. You know that with Hotmail there's always a little ad on the
bottom of every email. But I'm guessing that this Chinese ad is more
 intrusive than the normal ad?
One thing to check is if you use any kind of special Toolbar or Browser
Helper. Sometimes these will put ads all over the place including in
emails. Some Toolbars are ok - like Google Toolbar, or Yahoo Toolbar -
but some are mostly just adware or spyware. Personally I don't use any
toolbars because they take up screen space, slow down browsing, and most
are ad supported one way or another.

Check in Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs (in Vista I think it's
Control Panel, Programs, Installed Programs), and look for any toolbars
that are installed and un-install them (unless you like and use them).

Also, go to Start, Run, and type Msconfig (in Vista just type Msconfig
into the run box). Click the Startup tab. If you have a lot of checked
items go to this site to find out if any might be adware or spyware:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php Just type the name of the
startup item into the search box and you'll get a result that tells what
the item does, and if it is needed. If you find anything unsavory, or
even unnecessary, just uncheck it and reboot.
When you reboot you might see a box saying that you've made changes to
the startup list - just check the box to do not show this message
 again, and you'll be fine.

 Good luck,
 Donk

DogDoggieDiva,

I think it's possibly because we are from different countries and have
different ways of expressing ourselves that it does seem like some people
are questioning someone else's integrity and sometimes their intelligence.
I noticed it myself and was going to comment. Sometimes it's good to step
back and wait before you zip out a comment. Look at it and see if it could
possibly offend.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] No picture

2008-10-17 Thread Holly
Stephanie,

Did you right click the box and view the picture. If it doesn't show then
the picture is no longer there. This happens many times. If it does show,
go back and right click and copy image location. You can copy it to word
pad or something and then. Check to see if your firewall may be
restricting your view of the pictures. If so, you can add the site to your
allowed sites. use Zone Alarm and, when this happens, I go to the privacy
page and add the location to be allowed.

Seems like a lot to do to see a picture but, for example, when doing a
tutorial as I do oftentimes the instructions or setting are shown in a
screen shot and are essential to doing the work. When I write tutorials I
always show the settings along with the screen shot for people who can't
view the pictures.

Of course, I may not be hearing your question right. Is this on all
pictures you try to access or just on emails?

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Look what happened to me

2008-09-27 Thread Holly
Hi, folks,

I was sorry to have this happen to me but it did trigger some great
ideas/suggestions. I think the way hackers got into my account (my password
was strong and not easily found) was the way they got into Sarah Palin's
account. They got a hold of the name of the account (very, very easy to
do) and then, because of so much information on the web were able to answer
the security question. I don't remember what mine was but you know that
anything like your mother's maiden name or such like that is available on
line if it's anywhere in cyberspace.

Well, anyway, I've changed my password and my security question and am doing
the same on all of my important financial accounts. Suggest you all do the
same.

No, just make it free of dictionary words. It should be a mix of
totally unpredictable alpha and numeric characters. People on TV
constantly talk about alpha passwords being used by government people.
If you use plain language and might be of interest to hackers, EXPECT
to be hacked. They don't guess, they use programs that search using a
 dictionary search.

DO NOT USE PLAIN TEXT passwords!!!

 Hi:
As I keep repeating it is so easy to create your own XP DVD from the OEM

  not
matter if the OEM recovery was on a proprietary DVD or on a partition.
 Using

 have
offered anyone to help through these steps if they need it. It's so
embarrassing that people should suffer with OEM recovery setups when they
 could so
easily have an XP installation DVD. Hope someone reads this. Bye

Okay, folks, I received an email from one of my recipients telling me that
all I have to do is change my password on the account in question and it
should stop the problem. As I suspected it was a hacker that got a hold of

problem of the people who received the messages but at least it shouldn't
happen again.

I really appreciate all of your advice. By the way it's pretty sure there's

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Look what happened to me

2008-09-25 Thread Holly
Help! This is what my Gmail inbox looked like tonight. I'm showing the
messages in spam because that's where I sent them but I don't know what to
do about it. It looks like someone grabbed my gmail account and send
messages to some of my address book. Is that what it looks like to you. I
know I shouldn't write to the people who received these messages because
that would maybe exacerbate the problem, but what should I do?

God knows how many other such messages went out because the only way I know
about it is that some of the addresses bounced.

Ian,

I would say that might be it (the SP3 idea), but it happened before I
installed SP3. If it happens again I'll try that though. Thanks a lot.

Jim,

Oh, and it was a USB to PS2. The way it reacts is the pointer is on the
screen but won't move, just remains stationery.

Yes, that is weird. Can you describe the non functioning? Mice are
kind of unpredictable when they fail to work. They can quit altogether
or just fail certain specific functions.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Mouse Problems

2008-09-22 Thread Holly
This mouse is new, I just replaced my old one a month ago when it failed.
My problem with the cordless is that they don't, to the best of my
knowledge, make one with a roller ball. My main pleasure is doing graphic
arts and, although I have a tablet, I can manipulate very well (possibly
better) with the roller ball. The funny thing is I started with the roller
ball thinking I could encourage my husband to get interested in the computer
but that didn't work and I am hooked on it.

Holly

I really appreciate all of your help here and admire your expertise but I
have to point out in many cases (such as mine) we have to keep repeating the
information stated in our initial or early postings. I'm afraid I notice
this all the time here. Human nature?

OK, that doesn't sound like a USB problem, it sounds like the mouse
itself. Mice are one of the
things I have to keep replacing. I use a cordless one because I don't
like the slight tug of the cord. But if one can put up with a corded
 mouse they are very inexpensive.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Mouse Problems

2008-09-22 Thread Holly
Ian, I responded to your suggestion about SP3 with the fact that the problem
occurred before I installed SP3 and if I have further problems, I'll try
uninstalling it.

You tweaked me into googling to see about a cordless mouse with a trackball
and see that Logitech has one. Too bad I didn't realize that a couple of
months ago when I bought my TRACKMAN replacement.

Someone else said something about unplugging the cordless mouse I have and
that might solve the problem. My wireless mouse is an adjunct to my Wacomb
Tablet so I'd have to unplug that, I guess. Actually, I wonder if I could
remove that and only plug it in when I want to use it. H.

Thanks, once again, all.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Mouse Problems

2008-09-22 Thread Holly
A mouse with a ball. When I had to use the regular style mouse I always put
the pad on my lap and that's where my trackball mouse goes now. Wouldn't
like to be restricted to one spot, it's so tiring. The Trackman I have has
the ball on the left and I move it with my thumb and then the left and right
buttons are used with the forefinger and the ring finger. Then there's a
scroll in the middle that you manipulate with your middle finger. The only
finger that's not busy is the pinky:0)

Are you referring to a trackball or just a mouse with a ball instead

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Mouse Problems

2008-09-21 Thread Holly
Thanks, Donk,

The mouse is installed in the port on the back of my computer. I tried it
in a usb slot when I first bought it a few months ago but it didn't want to
work that way so it came with an adapter so that's what I used.. I also
installed the new software that came with it so believe the device drivers
are okay but checked it anyway and my software is up to date.

So far I've been able to get it to work again by restarting the computer
but, gosh, it's scary.

This might be a USB problem. I'm assuming the mouse (mice) are USB?
Do the mice start working if you unplug and then re-plug the USB cable?
If so, then it's likely USB related.
If the mice are plugged into a hub try plugging them into a port on the
back of the pc (actually just try 1 of them - you don't need 2 mice, heh).
If you've got a lot of USB devices the mouse might not be getting the
power it needs - maybe try to limit the number of USB device that are
 running all the time.
 Other thoughts:
Update the mouse drivers to the latest version from the maker's website.
Check Device Manager to be sure your USB controllers are shown as
 working properly.
You could try reinstalling the USB controllers from Device Manager (just
remove them and reboot to let Windows reinstall the drivers).

Look at this page for instructions on how to turn your hardware
 acceleration down -

 http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/articles/dmc_turnoffhardwareacceleration.aspx
Turning it down just 1 notch (instead of all the way) might help with
mouse pointer probs. Worth a try if all else fails.

 Good luck,
 Donk

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Re: Help! Windows won't boot!

2008-09-19 Thread Holly
This probably is too simplistic but I had/have this problem. The Windows
page came up and then black screen. I finally realized when I walked away
that it was just taking forever to come up and finally it did and things
were okay. I am assuming I have too many programs that start up. It won't
hurt to turn things on and walk away for a while and see if this might be
your problem.

I've been so busy and haven't taken the time to rectify this. For one
reason I had forgotten how to do it but believe I have to run msconfig and
then eliminate some of the start up programs. Any tips on the best way to
do this?

I suspect that if someone doesn't come up with a solution to your
problem you may need to get professional help. And if you go that
route be very careful, there are a lot of people out there who
masquerade as computer techs who are NOT. Before you let a tech do
anything, make him tell you what he will do and whether he is

Another idea that just came to mind may not be any more

a tech. Buy a new hard drive, install it [it's not difficult],
  install
Windows and then install the old drive as a second drive and
  maybe you
can get your data back if the problem was not a major hard drive
 failure.

Thanks for the guidelines. I've read them before but it doesn't hurt to be

I wanted to tell everyone who's on the digest that I just recently went to

highly recommend it.

 Howdy,

I've recently downloaded a couple of camera manuals in PDF files.

The pictures of the cameras are so dark I can't see the controls.

 I'm using Adobe Reader 7.

How can I lighten? If I could covert the file to a JPG I could use a

Photo program ... But I don't know how to do that.

 Thanks

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] simple (?) question...I think

2008-08-22 Thread Holly
Ian, here's a screenshot about what I mean. These addresses don't appear in
my address book. I've colored over the unwanted addresses.

I looked for a place in Gmail to change the Auto Complete and couldn't even
find tools. So although you didn't say to go to the browser, I look there
too. I use Firefox and followed from Tools to Options to tabs (no message
tab apparent) and still didn't see anything. Then I went to Windows and
didn't see it there. I know I've seen it somewhere but can't seem to find
it right now.

This is just an annoyance and very minor but my curiosity gets the better of
me sometimes.

Holly.

It far better to have this free form filler that you control than rely on a
 browser managing your log in's.

In Gmail open your your address book and delete those old address's you not
longer use or alternatively go into the Tools menu/Options/Message tab and
take the tick out of Auto Compete there.

They were I guess two separate questions :-((.

Can we get one thing clear now, can you play a music CD for

   OK?

If the answer is yes, can hear the music OK and it of listenable
quality then we can assume that the soundcard is functioning OK
 and
   has the correct drivers installed.

It is perfectly possible that while playing music or a similar
 sound
source, that you may have plugged the microphone into the speaker
socket by accident, in which case it is highly likey the
 microphone

I can say with all honesty, that the advise you have been given
 so
far is 100% accurate and in most cases would have resulted in
positive outcome. We cannot see or hear what you can and that is
 the
   vital link in the chain.

Can any of your friends try your microphone on their computers to

 Hi all,

Thanks for your help with trying to reinstall IE. For some reason, I
can't get it back. I do love my Firefox, but there are certain sites I
cannot print on (like Coupon sites). The coupon manager is only
 compatible with IE.

Anyway, I just downloaded Weather Channel and Weatherbug. When I try
to change location on Weatherbug, it brings me to the screen, I can
change the location, but the screen will not enlarge enough for me to
hit the save button. I thought it would be simple and all I would have
to is expand it, but it is not letting me. On Weather channel, when I
hit the Desktop screen, it is also cut off and I am unable to expand.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I am having the same problem.

 Any suggestiosn?

 Thanks,
 Anne

2008-01-02 Thread Holly Klass
I've had a lot of trouble with Windows Explorer when I'm trying to clean up
some of my
folders and move stuff around. It just keeps on giving me the have to close
message.
Very frustrating.

I finally installed xplorer2 and I'm absolutely thrilled with it, so thrilled I
may bite the
bullet and get the paid version. I believe I heard about this program from you
folks but if
I didn't here's the url.

http://zabkat.com/

I highly recommend it.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Bickering

2007-11-27 Thread Holly Klass
I want to tell you all that I (and I'm sure others) missed the opportunity to
perhaps learn
something. I'm on digest and I was so sick of all that was going on (and still
is as an
aftermath) I just passed by anything with the subject that was supposedly being
addressed. That plus the fact that these messages were not pruned made for
some
very dull scrolling. I so wish staying on subject could be a rule as well as
discarding
unneeded messages in a thread.

We need your advice, really we do.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Re: Prune Please

2007-11-20 Thread Holly Klass
Thank you, thank you, thank you. The digest is so much easier to read.
Hopefully we
can keep this up? I really appreciate it.

Holly

I am on digest and the scrolling is very time consuming. Could you
all please delete all but the last message you are responding to or,
at the least, cut to that one and the one before. It's hard to keep
interested when you have to search for the latest information.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Prune Please

2007-11-18 Thread Holly Klass
Hi,

I am on digest and the scrolling is very time consuming. Could you all please
delete all
but the last message you are responding to or, at the least, cut to that one
and the one
before. It's hard to keep interested when you have to search for the latest
information.

Another thing that has bothered me is the arguments between those who are
responding to a request. Once again, not of much interest to the rest of us.

I've learned a lot from the group but haven't had to ask for help. Keep up the
good work.
It's needed.

Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] No sound

2007-04-21 Thread Holly Klass
You will probably get answers from some of the techys but I'd suggest you go to
Control
Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. There are tabs and go to Volume. There you
can
adjust the volume and have an icon placed on your tool bar where you can
regulate the
volume when necessary. You may be on mute. That's one suggestion.

The green band is in the green hole, and the pink band is in the pink
hole. The power light is on.

I would greatly appreciate some suggestions.

[A-1-Computer_Tech] Password/Forum

2007-03-08 Thread Holly
I'm having a problem with one of my forums where each time I go to a
different link I'm asked for my password. I've spoken with the
administrator and she said there was nothing there that would cause
that. Is there something on my computer I can do to stop this? I
have cookies enabled and I've clicked on the remember me box many,
many times but nothing works. Fortunately, most of the time the id
and password are shown but it's a pain having to login all the time.

I recently had another problem within Windows so I did a System
Restore and that's been corrected but this persists. Any ideas?
