[AI] KNFB reader demo

2010-03-18 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Friends
I am using demo of KNFB READER on my N82 handset.
The software is definitely good for reading the text files, even labels of
medicine bottles!!!

However, I am not able to read tables accurately.
It commits the same errors of jumbling up columns and rows even when cursor and
arrow keys setting is set to auto.
Further, focus is surely a problem for totally blind.
It informs if it can not focus, or if the text is cut off while recognition,
but it seems pretty difficult, at least at present, to guess the accurate
distance for the page to be captured nicely. By keeping distance large enough
for entire page to be photographed, some additional elements are also included,
which makes recognition pretty slow.
Any views and experiences on the above are surely welcome.

2010-03-18 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
The information about focus or text being cut off is given post facto so it
becomes difficult to incorporate the feedback on further image capturing in
terms of optimum distance and focus, as it surely involves visual judgment.

can there not be a way of delivering focus information dynamically and whether
view is optimum for OCR, while capturing the image itself.

[AI] What's the difference between a quick and a full scan, and which do I want?

2010-03-18 Thread Waseem
Dear all,

Are you wondering:

Should I be running a 'Full Scan' or a 'Quick Scan' on my various
anti-spyware, anti-malware, anti-virus software? The options, and their
differences aren't always clear to me - when would one be more suitable than
the other, and what might be the dangers of running the wrong one?

Naturally the answer changes slightly depending on which program we're
talking about, but ultimately the software giving you a pretty basic choice:

Do you want the scan to be quick, and pretty good? Or would you rather it
take much longer but also be much more thorough?

Of course it all depends on what I mean by pretty good and much more
thorough.

I'll outline what they usually mean, and then which I suggest using and
when.

The vast majority of malware - both viruses and spyware - actually affect
only certain types of files and only in certain locations. For example files
that your computer would attempt to actually run - like a .exe file - are
the most likely to be infected. Other file types like plain text files or
music and video files are less likely to be infected. A quick scan might
restrict itself to only scanning those files that fall into the former
category, and ignore the rest. The list of file types it might scan could
still be quite long, but it's much quicker than scanning everything/

'Quick' scans are quick because they don't scan every file.

Similarly, most often files that are infected are in particular locations -
like in your Windows folders. A quick scan might restrict itself to scanning
files only in folders that fall into this most likely to be infected
category, and ignore everything else. There might be many locations but
it'll be much faster than scanning all locations.

Quick scans are quick because they don't scan every file. Instead of
scanning every file in every folder on every disk in your machine a quick
scan would scan only those files and locations where malware is most likely
to be present.

Exactly what is and is not scanned in a quick scan will vary depending on
the specific tool you're using.

In general quick scans are pretty good in that they run quickly, don't
interfere much and provide a good level of protection.

Full scans are just that: full. They scan every file in every folder on
every hard disk that you tell them to. As you can imagine, reading every
file can take some time, and that's the drawback. Depending on the tool it
can adversely impact the performance of other applications also attempting
to use the hard disk for the duration of the scan.

But it is thorough.

Remember I said that infections in some file types aren't likely, but that
doesn't mean that they aren't possible. It's rare that a music or video file
contain a virus, for example, but it can happen. A full scan stands at least
a chance of catching it, whereas a quick scan that didn't even look at these
files of course would not.

And that, then, would be what I mean when I say much more thorough.

So, what to use?

My machines are on 24 hours a day, and I have them run a full scan every
night when I'm not around. If you also leave your machines running overnight
I suggest doing the same. Coupled with normal safety precautions during the
day (i.e. don't open attachments you don't trust, don't click on suspicious
links, stay up-to-date, etc.) then you're in a pretty safe spot. You might
break out the quick scan if you ever felt like running one manually, but I'm
guessing you probably won't need to.

If, on the other hand, you turn your machine off over night, then it might
be very prudent to schedule your anti-malware software to do a quick scan -
so as not to interfere with your usage much - on login, or at some point
during the day. I would then also perform a full scan perhaps once a week,
either manually or scheduled when you know you won't be impacted by it.

[AI] save a teacher by your valuable suggestions

2010-03-18 Thread Arpit Jain
Being a teacher in a mainstream school, I have been receiving very less salary.
In MP we the Samvida teachers of grade 2 are receiving only RS.3,500 ohnly per
month. Everybody knows that this is not sufficient for a singal man’s bread and
butter. Most of us have our family also.

Therefore, my friends, please tell me about the payscale of teachers of govt.
Schools in your states. May we apply for the same job in other states? Is there
any prohibition for applying? I have many skills like:

Good command over Braille,
Good knowledge and interest in science
Good knowledge of computer and typing
Great interest in social science
I am working on creation of tactile maps
I know some HTML
Good knowledge of abacus
I can sing and teach prayers and motivation songs
knowledge of current affairs

My qualification:

M.A (in Hindi literature with 68 per cent),
B.Ed in special education (in vision impairment),
18 Certificate courses from The Hadley School for the Blind,

I am unable to understand what should I do! I can not leave this job because
this is a government job and without it there will be no self respect for me.
Another option is to join my father’s and brother’s business. They are not
agree to have me as a resource for their venture. They think that their work is
not doable for a blind person.

Friends, Please suggest me the right way, and only you can save a teacher to
become something wrong. Everybody comes to do something and to earn something.
I want to do a respectful job that can provide tension free bread and butter to
my family.

[AI] Braille literacy flags, even as technology makes it more urgent

2010-03-18 Thread Sathiyaprakash Ramdoss
This following article was taken from
http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0719/p13s02-legn.html/%28page%29/2

Braille literacy flags, even as technology makes it more urgent
By
Amy Brittain,
Potter's much-awaited fate will be revealed to these blind children at
Boston's Midnight Madness party at the National Braille Press (NBP).
It will be a
time of celebration, as the party marks only the second time braille
readers have had simultaneous access to a new Harry Potter book
release.

But these braille-literate children are a clear minority in the blind
community. The NBP estimates that today only 12 percent of 55,000
legally blind children
in the United States can read braille – named for founder Frenchman
Louis Braille. Although the number does not account for those
cognitively unable to
read, the literacy rate is down significantly from 50 percent in the 1960s.

It seems the time, effort, and money it takes to teach children
braille is sometimes passed over in favor of less expensive and less
time-consuming audio
and computer aids. To many within the blind community, this trend
holds serious ramifications.

[Literacy] is the biggest single determinant of a person's ability to
be successful, says Steven Rothstein, president of Perkins School for
the blind
in Watertown, Mass. If literacy rates had gone down for the general
population, there would be a political uproar in this country.

Mr. Rothstein estimates that braille literacy is closer to 20 percent
and considers the decline an enormous crisis requiring a civil
rights movement for
America's disabled.

According to statistics from the American Foundation for the Blind,
only 32 percent of the blind in the US are employed. But several
studies indicate that
at least 90 percent of that population who hold jobs are braille literate.

The decline in literacy is generally linked to the 1973 Rehabilitation
Act, which mainstreamed blind students into public schools where
teachers were often
unprepared to teach them. Today about 85 percent of blind
schoolchildren are enrolled in public schools.

According to the National Federation of the Blind, 33 states have
enacted bills promoting braille instruction within K-12 school
systems.

NBP vice president Tanya Holton says this grass-roots effort began
in the late 1980s when blind adults became concerned that American
youth were not receiving
adequate braille instruction. She says guardians should be educated
about such legislation and prepared to fight for braille education.

Trials in seeking better teaching in schools

Stephen Yerardi, class president of Perkins's 2004 graduating high
school class, soberly recalls his family's fight for braille education
in the New Hampshire
public school system when he was 9. He says teachers suggested a
life-skills program with no academic instruction and no hope for
college.

I hated going to school, Mr. Yerardi says by phone. The teachers
didn't really understand how to teach me, and they were kind of
negative toward me.

Yerardi says he received braille instruction just twice a week –
significantly too little time, he says – from a teacher who mistakenly
reversed dot combinations.

They had no experience teaching a blind student, he says. I was the
only person with a physical disability in nine towns.

At age 13, Yerardi says school system administrators paid for his
instruction at Perkins after coming to the conclusion that they could
not provide adequate
resources. Consistent braille and computer instruction at Perkins
changed his academic future, he says. As a dean's list student at
Keene State College where he will
be junior this fall, Yerardi reads textbooks using a PAC Mate personal
digital assistant with audio instruction and a refreshable braille
display. He plans
to teach technology to the blind after he graduates in 2009.

Hi,

I can suggest one wonderful personality called Mr. Ravindran. He was an
officer in the sbi when he lost his vision due to RD. Not becoming
desperate at this bad fate, he opted for a reversion to the post of
telephone operator and performed his duty so successfully that he had
grabbed the Kerala state award for the best physically challenged employ in
1988. After his retirement in 2005, he started the business of the taxi
service and is now running it with much success. From one taxi, now he
possess 15 or 16 taxis and he enjoys the business too.

His contact no. is: Land line 04952355133, Mobile: 09349113339

[AI] Questionnaire for blind/low vision/persons with degenerative eye ccondition who are men and are married to able-bodied women

2010-03-18 Thread Subramani L
Folks:

Most of us read a lot of romantic literature (in the context of men-women
relationship) and either dismiss it as idealistic and far removed from reality
or expect it to happen in real life. After having read a lot of such fiction
myself (especially in recent times), I wanted to understand how romance is
working for disabled persons who are married to able-bodied spouses. Though in
fiction the male personality is often portrayed as good looking, fair, lean
bodied, loving and generous to marry a disabled woman, that could be quite
different in real life. To our chagrin, we the blind men realise that we are
quite opposite of those fictional heroes (forgive me for my bluntness) and have
a disability to boot. This gave rise to an idea for an article which I have
been thinking over for some time. The following questionnaire is the result of
my effort to collect information for the article. I would lideally expect men
who are over 30 and have been married for more than five years and their wives
to answer the questionnaire, though I would admit answers from anyone who
doesn't fit into this category but have something interesting to share. Forgive
me for spelling errors since I have some restrictins in typing and have taken
more than 45 minutes to type this. Your thoughts, answers, feedbacks,
experiences and even debates (possibly off the list) are welcomed. Looking
forward to hearing interesting things from men who have gone through the
experience often described in Indian society as sagar.

THe Questions follow:

When did you get married?
What is your wife's name?
Is it an arranged marriage?
How did you handle the blindness/low vision or retinal issue and how was it
accepted/appreciated by the bride's family?
What was the attitude of the bride's family to you? Did they treat you well?
What was your wife's reaction when you explained to her about the possible
limitations you may have due to RP? (one thing that comes to mind is how unlike
we all are when it comes to a typical bridegroom who can take his bride on a
bike ride or communicate with her through eye contact)
What was her expectations of you when you tried explaining the limitations to
her?
What was your own emotional state when your disability keeps reminding you what
you can't do? Does your wife help you overcome the emotional issues of your
disability particularly vis-à-vis the marriage?
Do you believe in the reality of romance? Give any real life examplewhere you
actually felt it?
How do you handle differences with your wife? How do you counter when your
disability becomes (or portrayed as) an issue?
This may be a philosophical question... What is your understanding/experience
of happiness in married life? Do you think you are complete after having
married a woman and successfully leading your life?

(The following sets of questions must be answered by your wife)

What was the main reason in your choice to marry your husband: is it family
compulsion or as a result of sympathy you felt for him, or admirationof his
personality/accomplishments or a feeling of love?
Is your decision inspired by women in your family or friends circle who had
married disabled persons?
How do you explain your husband's disability to a stranger who perhaps cannot
understand the chemistry between you and him?
Do you support your husband when he expresses his limitations within the
relationship or talks about his inability to perform or do certain things that
somewhat differentiate him from other able-bodied men?
What do you tell yourself or your child/children, when you/they observe an able
bodied person performing things like driving a car or playing with his child in
the beach or going on a giant wheel, which, on account of his disability your
husband can't do?
Do you experience love in marriage? Is there any incident that made you feel
love or happiness in marriage?
Do you feel your understanding or experience of marriage could have been
different if you were married to an able-bodied person?

cannot understand the chemistry between you and him?
Do you support your husband when he expresses his limitations within the
relationship or talks about his inability to perform or do certain things
that somewhat differentiate him from other able-bodied men?
What do you tell yourself or your child/children, when you/they observe an
able bodied person performing things like driving a car or playing with his
child in the beach or going on a giant wheel, which, on account of his
 disability your husband can't do?
Do you experience love in marriage? Is there any incident that made you feel
 love or happiness in marriage?
Do you feel your understanding or experience of marriage could have been
different if you were married to an able-bodied person?

Re: [AI] save a teacher by your valuable suggestions

2010-03-18 Thread Vamshi. G
Dear Arpit Jain,

I feel really sorry for the pay scales in MP. There has been a pay
revision in AP very recently and the teachers in AP are being paid
very handsomely now. But I'm not sure whether you can apply for a job
in other states. Your age is an important factor. If that permits,
why don't you try for a central government job, SSC and RRB have
announced their recruitments recently. You can apply for bank exams
also.

Coming to your case, don't know whether all these are possible, but a
few suggestions;

1. Why don't you take up tuitions in Hindi in the evenings and mornings.
2. Get yourself acquainted with some skills like medical
transcription and similar ones during summers and take it up as a part
time job during evenings and mornings.
3. You said you're good at singing. If you are really proficient in
music, you can take up music classes.

But remember one thing, you're feeling for your low pay. Majority of
blind people in India are still unemployed. Something is better than
nothing. Don't take any decission in haste.

Subject: [AI] save a teacher by your valuable suggestions

Being a teacher in a mainstream school, I have been receiving very less
salary. In MP we the Samvida teachers of grade 2 are receiving only
RS.3,500 ohnly per month. Everybody knows that this is not sufficient
for a singal man's bread and butter. Most of us have our family also.

Therefore, my friends, please tell me about the payscale of teachers of
govt. Schools in your states. May we apply for the same job in other
states? Is there any prohibition for applying? I have many skills like:

 Good command over Braille,
Good knowledge and interest in science
Good knowledge of computer and typing
 Great interest in social science
I am working on creation of tactile maps
 I know some HTML
 Good knowledge of abacus
I can sing and teach prayers and motivation songs
 knowledge of current affairs

 My qualification:

M.A (in Hindi literature with 68 per cent),
B.Ed in special education (in vision impairment),
18 Certificate courses from The Hadley School for the Blind,

I am unable to understand what should I do! I can not leave this job
because this is a government job and without it there will be no self
respect for me. Another option is to join my father's and brother's
business. They are not agree to have me as a resource for their venture.
They think that their work is not doable for a blind person.

Friends, Please suggest me the right way, and only you can save a
teacher to become something wrong. Everybody comes to do something and
to earn something. I want to do a respectful job that can provide
tension free bread and butter to my family.

 Arpit jain..

Most of us read a lot of romantic literature (in the context of men-women

romance is working for disabled persons who are married to able-bodied
spouses. Though in fiction the male personality is often portrayed as good
looking, fair, lean bodied, loving and generous to marry a disabled woman,
that could be quite different in real life. To our chagrin, we the blind men
realise that we are quite opposite of those fictional heroes (forgive me for
my bluntness) and have a disability to boot. This gave rise to an idea for
an article which I have been thinking over for some time. The following
questionnaire is the result of my effort to collect information for the

for more than five years and their wives to answer the questionnaire, though
I would admit answers from anyone who doesn't fit into this category but
have something interesting to share. Forgive me for spelling errors since I

(one thing that comes to mind is how
unlike we all are when it comes to a typical bridegroom who can take his
bride on a bike ride or communicate with her through eye contact)
What was her expectations of you when you tried explaining the limitations
 to her?
What was your own emotional state when your disability keeps reminding you
what you can't do? Does your wife help you overcome the emotional issues of
your disability particularly vis-à-vis the marriage?
Do you believe in the reality of romance? Give any real life examplewhere
 you actually felt it?
How do you handle differences with your wife? How do you counter when your
disability becomes (or portrayed as) an issue?
This may be a philosophical question... What is your
understanding/experience of happiness in married life? Do you think you are
complete after having married a woman and successfully leading your life?

(The following sets of questions must be answered by your wife)

What was the main reason in your choice to marry your husband: is it family
compulsion or as a result of sympathy you felt for him, or admirationof his
personality/accomplishments or a feeling of love?
Is your decision inspired by women in your family or friends circle who had
 married disabled persons?
How do you explain your husband's disability to a stranger who perhaps
cannot understand the chemistry between you and him?
Do you support your husband when he expresses his limitations within the
relationship or talks about his inability to perform or do certain things

10 Little-known facts about .com- Indiatimes Infotech
Indiatimes Infotech

http://infotech.indiatimes.com/quickiearticleshow/5697334.cms

Internet's most popular domain name dotcom (.com) has turned 25! The
domain of Internet's most successful companies Google, eBay, Amazon
has through the years shaped World Wide Web what it is today.

Short for 'commercial', the .com extension was initially intended to
be used for ecommerce websites. However, over the years, the domain
has been in use for any and every type of site, from business to blogs
to personal websites.

As the .com celebrates its 25th birthday, here are 10 interesting
facts about the domain.
First .com
Twenty five years ago, on March 15, 1985, the first commercial dotcom
company Symbolics.com was born. It was one of the six dotcoms
registered in 1985.

In 2009, Symbolics.com was sold to XF.com Investments. The current
Symbolics web site is available at symbolics-dks.com. XF.com is a
commercial real estate and investment site.
.cor not .com
Before the domain name .com was finalised, .cor was the top runner for
corporation names. The .com was originally administered by the United
States Department of Defense, but is today operated by VeriSign.
.com count
Any guesses on the number of .coms today? Of the current 250 million
websites, a whopping 80 million are .coms.

Between 1985 and 2000, over 21 million domain names were registered.
57 million domain names were registered between 2000 and 2010. The
.com domain initially saw a slow pick up with mere 100 .com domain
names registered two and a half years after the first .com was
registered.

During Internet boom in 1997, .com count reached the one millionth number.
Dotcom bust in 2000? Not really!
You thought dotcom bust of 2000, which saw large number of dotcoms of
all sizes crumbling like nine pins, stole the domain's scorching
growth march? Not really! In the year 2000 too, the number of dotcoms
grew by a monthly average of 668,000 globally.
Longest single-word .com
Ever wondered which is the .com with the longest name? It is:
http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.com.
The domain name belongs to a Welsh village.
Most expensive .com
Which is the world's most expensive .com? No, it is not sex.com
despite the huge number of takers for porns on Internet. The world's
most expensive .com is insure.com. In 2009, the site was bought for a
whopping $16 million by QuintStreet. Presently, the site offers life
insurance, auto insurance, health insurance and other policies.

Before 2009, sex.com held the title for the world's most expensive
.com domain having got sold for $14 million in 2006. At No 3 4 are
Fund.com, which got sold for $9.99 million in 2008 and Porn.com, which
got sold for $9.5 million in 2007.
Most popular .coms
The most popular words used in domain names are home (1.2 million),
online (one million), and land (891,000), according to VeriSign.

Today, nearly 53 billion requests for websites including .com are
logged every day.
First 10 .com domains
World's first ten dotcom names were sold between March 1985 to March
1986. Below are the top ten in order...

Symbolics.com (March 15, 1985), BBN.com (April 24, 1985), Think.com
(May 24, 1985), MCC.com (July 11, 1985), DEC.com (Sept. 30, 1985),
Northrop.com (Nov. 7, 1985), Serox.com (Jan. 9, 1986), SRI.com (Jan.
17, 1986), HP.com (March 3, 1986) and Bellcore.com (March 5, 1986).
Business size
According to a new ITIF study, the dotcom domain has become the
platform for $400 billion in annual economic activity, a number that
is expected to rise to $950 billion by 2020.
No. of sites
E-com has been one of the major driving force in the popularity of
dotcom. According to the report, 11.9 million are e-commerce and
online business sites, 4.3 million are entertainment sites and there
are 3.1 million finance-related sites and 1.8 million sports sites.

[AI] Internet Explorer 9: 10 Things to know

2010-03-18 Thread pradeep banakar
Internet Explorer 9: 10 Things to know
Indiatimes Infotech

http://infotech.indiatimes.com/quickiearticleshow/5693605.cms
The software giant Microsoft is all set to update its IE browser. The
Redmond-based company released a platform preview of Internet Explorer
9 for developers at MIX10 Web developer conference in Las Vegas.

Microsoft is betting on IE9's speed and performance to expand its
majority share in the browser market. The company claims that the new
browser will be faster than Firefox 3.6. According to Microsoft, Web
and application developers will want to upgrade to the next version of
Internet Explorer for its optimized performance and HTML 5 support.

Here’s all about Internet Explorer 9’s very first release.
What's new in IE9?
For now, Microsoft is betting on IE9's speed and performance. The
company claims that the new browser will be faster than Firefox 3.6.
The company says Web and application developers will want to upgrade
to the next version of Microsoft's Web browser, IE9, for its optimized
performance and better support for several standards: HTML5, DOM, and
CSS3. IE9 is also the first browser to provide hardware-accelerated
SVG support.

IE9's new script engine, internally known as `Chakra' compiles
JavaScript in the background on a separate core of the CPU, parallel
to IE. HTML5 will also allow IE9 to move beyond resource hogging
browser plug-ins to display multimedia content online.
How IE9 looks?
It is too early to comment on IE9's user interface. For, there is
still no beta release. The platform preview is essentially a frame for
showing off the new browser's JavaScript and rendering engines. So,
there's no Back button, bookmark manager, history feature, toolbars,
and other so-common features in a browser interface.
What exactly is IE9 Platform Preview?
Internet Explorer Platform Preview is not a full Web browser. It is
intended to give developers an opportunity to test and provide
feedback on the underlying platform for Internet Explorer 9.

To distinguish it from a full browser, the company calls it a Platform
Preview. Microsoft plans to update the release every 8 weeks.
Can I use IE 9 release for my regular browsing?
No. As mentioned above, the Platform Preview is not a fully-functional
browser. It opens links in a user's default browser, not the Preview
app. Since the Platform Preview cannot be registered as a default
browser on a user's system, the links do not open in it.

Also, some of the features may or may not be the part of the shipped
version of IE9, depending on developers’ feedback through various
stages of Platform Preview.
Does IE9 release replace my current Internet Explorer?
No, it does not, though it does share some settings with your existing
Internet Explorer installation. Platform Preview installs side-by-side
with earlier versions of Internet Explorer and any other browser(s) on
your computer.
Any cool feature in IE9 release?
Microsoft has released some technology demos that show IE9's better
support for JavaScript, its HTML5 capabilities, and support for
hardware-accelerated graphics. Some demonstrations include, flying
images, map zooming, pulsating bubbles and GPU-powered falling balls.
What are system requirements for IE 9 release?
Users need a Windows PC running either Windows 7 or Vista. On Vista,
you need to have installed Internet Explorer 8 and you need to install
the Platform Update for Windows Vista, available on Windows Update
since October, 2009.

Platform Preview is only available in a 32-bit x86 version but it will
install and run on 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista.
Can IE 9 release run on Windows XP?
No. Microsoft has said that IE9 will not be available on Windows XP.
According to the company, IE9's GPU-powered graphics take advantage
of new technologies available in Windows 7 and back-ported only to
Windows Vista. These technologies depend on advancements in the
display driver model introduced first in Windows Vista.
When will first IE 9 beta ship?
Microsoft has still not given any fixed time period for the beta
release of IE9. The company says that the beta version will be
released as a full browser once the build has reached the customer
quality bar.
How can I download IE 9 release?
The IE9 Platform Preview can be downloaded from Microsoft's Web site
ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/ .

[AI] Neural Prosthesis: What wonders can we expect?

2010-03-18 Thread Sathiyaprakash Ramdoss
This following article was taken from

http://www.victordchase.com/bio.htm

The marvel of the human machine unavoidably inspires awe. The
coordination within the massive complex of organs that make up our
bodies is nothing short
of miraculous. While each organ performs its individual function, it
also operates in finely tuned concert with the other instruments of
the body to create
the music of life. The nervous system alone, consisting of billions of
neurons, or nerve cells, that allow us to perceive and interact with
the world around
us, makes the finest of humankind's technological developments pale
into insignificance.

Even scientists who devote their entire lives to understanding the
workings of the sensory systems eventually arrive at a gap they've
been unable to bridge
short of taking a leap of faith. Modern technology allows them to
watch an individual's brain waves fluctuate in response to a stimulus
such as sound,
light, or a pinprick. But they still can't look at a spike in waves on
an oscilloscope or changes in images on a brain scan and really
understand how that
stimulus translates into perception. They don't understand how
electrical activity in the brain corresponds to perception, pain,
pleasure, or conscious
awareness.

There's no doubt, however, that electricity is at the root of it all.
Electricity, or the movement of electrons and ions, is such a
fundamental aspect
of nature that it was woven into the fabric of life. A long time
before humankind ever walked the face of the earth, let alone thought
about electronics,
Mother Nature found that electrical signals provide the most efficient
method of transmitting information within the body. No living creature
could survive
without electricity, because the body is, in essence, an electrical
machine. Without electricity, neurons could not communicate the
signals that allow
us to see, hear, touch, smell, taste, and move about, and even think.
We need electricity to interact with the world around us as much as an
electric motor
requires electric power to function. Without it the motor is dead. The
same holds true for human beings. Without electricity there is no
life.

Complete comprehension of how small spikes of electricity lead to
perception and thought still lurks somewhere in the future. But
scientists are making
exponential leaps in understanding the mass of neurons that make up
the brain and the rest of the nervous system that extends from it,
though their task
is akin to counting, categorizing, and understanding the activity of
each star in the universe, as well as its relationship to the whole.
Given this level
of complexity, resulting from the vast number of elements that must
operate perfectly to provide perception, movement, and thought, it is
amazing that
it is not the norm for things to go awry. Yet in the vast majority of
people, the staggering number of components that make up the bodily
systems that
allow us to function in our environment work perfectly, or close to it.
Unfortunately, in some people, the circuitry that generates and
conducts electrical signals goes bad, rendering them unable to fully
partake of the miracle
of the senses, as in the case of the blind, when the rod and cone
photoreceptors inside the eye can no longer translate light into the
electrical signals
that send information to the brain. Or when the hair cells inside the
cochlea of the inner ear, which process sound waves, die off, and a
person loses
the ability to hear. Failure of the body's electrical circuitry is
also responsible for paralysis that occurs when spinal cord injuries
damage the nerve
cells that carry electrical signals from the brain's motor cortex to
the muscles and from the skin's tactile receptors to the somatosensory
portion of
the brain. Until recently, these conditions were deemed irreversible.
Now there is hope.

Through the ability to miniaturize integrated electronic circuitry,
scientists can take concrete steps toward countering the ravages
wrought on those whose
internal circuitry has shorted out, without it being a total act of
hubris. The same methods used to shrink electronic components down to
pocket computer
and digital watch size are now being used to create reliable,
intricate devices small enough to be implanted inside the eye, the
ear, the muscles, and
the brain itself. These manmade, implantable marvels of modern
technology are known as neural prostheses, devices that directly
interface with some component
of the nervous system. They do so either by feeding electrical
impulses into nerves or muscles or by recording signals from the
nervous system and using
those signals to operate some kind of machine, which itself may be
implanted in the body.

Neural prostheses have the potential to aid the hundreds of thousands,
or perhaps even millions, of individuals with neurological disorders
that disrupt
their ability to move or to communicate. These people have functioning
brains, but because of injury or disease, cannot

Re: [AI] save a teacher by your valuable suggestions

2010-03-18 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Dear Arpit
Educational field is always an escape goat whenever allocation of financial
resources is concerned.
In Maharashtra, Teachers are appointed as shikshan sevaks for initial three
years and then they are paid the regular scales which are decent enough and at
par with government employees.
However, appointments of teachers in Maharashtra even in government granted
schools and even appointments of lecturers are mostly done by way of trade. I
mean posts are, more often than not, bought and sold.
This is so for able-bodied, situation is much worse for blind.
I can not understand why government authorities including UGC which conduct
national level qualifying test for lectureship, do not make appointments
themselves instead of leaving it to managements of individual institutions.

Anyway, coming to your case, have you tried to clear NET in Hindi?
Why have you not done regular B.ED?
Or why don't you do the same even now?
You may do B.ED. by correspondence course as it is allowed for serving teachers.
That will make you eligible for teaching job up to senior secondary level.
Now, I am afraid without regular B.ED., you can not apply for middle school
high school or junior college teachers job, and without NET you can not apply
for Senior college job.
Without D.ED. you can not apply for primary teachers job as well.
I am not discouraging you, but why don't you acquire regular teaching
qualifications. Courses from Hadley school are not relevant for teaching job in
India.
In kendriya vidyalaya, some vacancies for Hindi teacher's post are reserved for
VH almost every year. Do apply for it, sometimes for PGT, they don't require
B.ED., sometimes they do. FOR TGT, it is a must.
Or else, do try other fields as suggested by other AI members.
Ultimately, don't lose hope and what you already have.

Sorry for being so blunt!!!

You can apply for bank exams
also.

Coming to your case, don't know whether all these are possible, but a
few suggestions;

I will get back to you off the list with answers within a couple of days.
I think, if honesty is the best policy, then the questionnaire will surely

Subject: [AI] Questionnaire for blind/low vision/persons with degenerative eye
ccondition who are men and are married to able-bodied women

2010-03-18 Thread firoz

i am also a teacher

i started my carier with just 800 rs only before i got regular post in the
same school

now i am enough salary

now all over india ranging from three years to five years you will get 3,500
rs only and then only you will get government pay scale if they satisfy
with your job or they may remove you after theree or five years of probation

so according to me stay at one place and come up slowly

you can do tution privately or join some tution classes

almost every new teacher getting extra money from doing private tution or
join classes you can give on line music classes also

but teaching job is very satisfying and respected job and very easy going
and no botheration after few years

you can do many activities after school time
