General Question on ITSM Administration and Configuration

2009-10-26 Thread Webster, Basil
Hi All,

Trust the weekend was good to you.

I have a general enquiry regarding your experiences on the general
configuration and admin of your systems. I am a developer and in our
organization, my team have traditionally done all of this. However,
since we implemented ITSM around 5 months ago, we have had many calls
from the business people to relinquish much of this to them. Initially
we gave them the data import sheets to do and after 7 customers they
still can't get this basic task right. We are getting requests to dish
out the master roles and to allow them to be able to enable and disable
the soft config items, like categorizations etc.

I am fighting this. What I want to know is what are you guys out there
doing? Are you in the same situation or are you from the business end
and have taken on these roles for your organization, which would imply
that you take on the responsibilities too? Did your organization create
system admin roles outside of the development team? One of our biggest
issues is that we know we will get all the queries when it falls apart
(let me not be to negative, and say if it falls apart), yet we will not
know why someone made the changes. It is my experience that people that
have not worked with the administration of a system do not understand
that a seemingly small change can have huge ripple effect.

It would be great if I could get what role you have and why you might or
might not support my experience.

Kind Regards,

Basil Webster

Remedy Developer

Embedded ARSystem Reports in MT 7.5

2009-10-26 Thread Frank Caruso
ARS 7.1 p5
SQL Server 2005
Windows 2003
Tomcat

Upgraded from MT 7.1 to MT 7.5p3.

Cannot get ARSystem reports that are embedded in active links to run.
Get 301 errors about error writing to a file. I've checked the
permissions on the underlying folders and they are correct. Also,
active links that run ARSystem reports from the Report form work just
fine.

Thank you

AIE 7.1 data conversion

2009-10-26 Thread Frex Popo
Hello everyone,

I have a table on a remote database (SQL Server 2005) whose data we are reading
to a local form in Remedy. One of the columns in the remote table is of type
INTEGER. The target column in the remedy form is of type character. I need to
be able to convert the INTEGER data to charaters within the AIE mapping. I am

Task Flow bugs corrected

2009-10-26 Thread Charles Baldi
All,
For anyone who is using the Task Flow engine in Change Management in more
than a trivial way, you may have encountered bugs that prevent a built flow
from behaving as expected. We did. After several unhelpful and
time-wasting discussions with BMC support, we tracked-down and fixed a
handful of bugs in the Task Flow engine.

Context: ITSM 7.0.03, patch 008.

Hoping this may be useful to others, here are the corrections that we made
and why.

1. Filter TMS:TAS:Bypassed_MarkFlowTo_NotFollowed
The If Action - Push Fields was setting the Flow Status to Flow Followed
rather than Flow Not Followed as its name says. This was causing a flow
that should be bypassed appear as if it was still active. The correction
was to modify the Push Fields to set Status = “Flow Not Followed”
== This was the principle bug we found. Fixing this caused the bypass of
Task Groups to function properly.

2. Filter TMS:FLW:Bypassed_TaskEvaluate`!
The Run If qualification was looking for Status = Flow Followed to check
for bypassed rather than Flow Not Followed. No doubt this bug was hidden
because of the first one above (or created because the first one could not
be found.) The correction was to change the Run If condition to check for
Status = Flow Not Followed.

3. Filter TMS:TGR:Bypassed`!
This filter was not properly setting the DO variable zTmpInternal when a
Task Group within another Task Group was being bypassed. When this happened
the change of Status to Bypassed was being interpreted as a user input
change which caused the filter TMS:SHR:Inactive_StatusLock to generate an
error. This caused all pending flow updates to roll back leaving the flow
unusable. The correction was to add zTmpInternal = Yes to the third Push
Fields If Action.

4. Filter TMS:FLW:CheckForOtherFailedFlows
I consider this a defect. In a merged flow (i.e., a Task with multiple
input flows) if ANY input flow was bypassed, this filter caused the task and
all downstream flows to also be bypassed. This is not the behavior I
expect. When I have Flow To Successor when = All Complete (in the flow
definition) I consider a bypassed input flow to be a completed flow.
Therefore if any input is closed normally, then the multiple-input task
should be activated normally. The multiple-input task should only be
bypassed if ALL inputs are bypassed. This is important because using Any
Complete in the flow is not an adequate solution. I want the multi-input
task to activate only when all inputs are completed or bypassed. Setting
the flow to Any Complete would allow the task to fire prematurely. The
correction was to DISABLE the filter.

5. Filter TMS:SHR:varSetNameAsSourceForLabel. Despite what its help text
says, this was only setting the source field for a data label if the data
variable was an OUTPUT. We need the labels to be set when they are INPUT as
well. My correction was to copy the filter and add the opposite condition,
in this case ('zTmpVariableID' != $NULL)

I hope this saves someone some time and pain.

Regards,
Chuck Baldi

Re: Re : AIE 7.1 data conversion - RESOLVED

2009-10-26 Thread Sabyson Fernandes
I faced similar issues with data imports using AIE. To get around limitations
of AIE, I create SQL views and perform data manipulation using SQL functions
such as convert, dateadd etc. Once the view is created, simply point the AIE
job to the view and perform simple field and sql column mappings.

Hope this helps.

Tim,

If you know of specific defects that affect the usability of AR System 7.5.00
for disabled persons, please do contact BMC Support and log those defects so
they can be corrected. Significant effort has been taken by BMC in recent
releases to ensure that the web client follows the guidelines set forward by
Section 508 to the maximum extent possible. BMC is confident that our AR
System based solutions can meet or exceed the review processes of agencies in
the area of Section 508 - and we have, in fact, passed those reviews in many
large U.S. Government agencies. A Voluntary Product Assessment Template (VPAT)
can be made upon request to any customer who needs further information on this
topic.

in our team has started logging in using Demo.

I tried changing it by going into user form. Now, unable to login
through Demo / and the new password created in the user form.

Is there a way to reset the password for Demo.Tried logging in through
other accounts AppAdmin , etc but can't view user form through those
accounts .

Please advise,

ARS 7.5 Patch 002 crash

2009-10-26 Thread John Sundberg

Any suggestions?

(I know Mid-tier (tomcat) was being restarted)

Wondering -- how to interpret this.

Is the ARS log saying that it crashed and the last thing it was trying
to do was an appadmin Mid-tier logging in?

Or -- was that it the last successful thing it did.

Re: 7.5 or 7.6

2009-10-26 Thread Timothy Powell
Yes, I already have.

The main concerns center around:

The status flow bar and the significant use of images (which are not read by
a screen reader and are not recognized as a tab stop). Images cannot be the
only means to convey a message/result/status.

Trim text which are not read by a screen reader and not recognized as a tab
stop. Trim text cannot be the only means to convey a message/result/status.

Field data is not automatically read by JAWS and the key commands to enforce
data reads are not consistent. NOTE: In JAWS 7 data was read automatically.
So it seems some functionality has been lost either in the application or it
might be a JAWS 10 thing, but we have not been able to find a JAWS 10
setting for this.

Field tabbing issues. Tabbing in order is extremely important.

Data visualization fields.

These were the biggest issues encountered in a 4-5 hour brief run through on
7.5 (via mid-tier) with JAWS 10.

More issues as encountered are being reported.

If you know of specific defects that affect the usability of AR System
7.5.00 for disabled persons, please do contact BMC Support and log those
defects so they can be corrected. Significant effort has been taken by BMC
in recent releases to ensure that the web client follows the guidelines set
forward by Section 508 to the maximum extent possible. BMC is confident
that our AR System based solutions can meet or exceed the review processes
of agencies in the area of Section 508 - and we have, in fact, passed those
reviews in many large U.S. Government agencies. A Voluntary Product
Assessment Template (VPAT) can be made upon request to any customer who
needs further information on this topic.

Re: 7.5 or 7.6

2009-10-26 Thread Timothy Powell
And if you recall, I was part of one of those large U.S. Government
Agencies efforts. Probably the biggest one you had to deal with. But we had
to do some MAJOR re-work of the app we had at that time (5.5) in order to
get that sign-off. The strategies we used and developed partnering with BMC
were not fully utilized in 7.5.

For example, we had to convert every single piece of trim text to character
fields displayed as text so that they could be recognized as a tab stop by
JAWS and WindowEyes.

We had to develop a totally keyboard functional field level help system.

We had to strip out images and replace them with character fields containing
data that could be read by a screen reader.

These were just a few.

As a result of that effort with us, BMC came up with some great new coding
ideas and functionality that was released as part of the 7.0 code line and
some good new strategies in implementation.

But (IMHO), it's not the technology or strategy that is missing, it's the
lack of implementation of that technology or strategy.

I understand that the effort required to deliver a truly Section 508
compliant app is tremendous, but..

Tim

Re: Password for Demo Account ? Reset.

2009-10-26 Thread Joe DeSouza
You could also do this at DB level by resetting the password in the view user_x
and the cache table user_cache.

update user_x set password = null where login_name = 'Demo';
update user_cache set password = null where username = 'Demo';
commit;

user_x is a view of the User table as you see in your User tool, and user_cache
is the user cache table, where the system actually reads the password from
while authenticating. Having reset the password value in both these tables, you
would be good to go..

Make sure that you do not have multiple entries for Demo in the user_cache
table.. It had happened on one of my customers system, we have no idea what
caused that.. that did give us authentication problems too - only that it would
authenticate Demo with either of the two passwords on both those records.. If
you see multiple records in the user_cache table for the username Demo, delete
all except one of those records.. Be cautious of not deleting records belonging
to other users or you will cause other problems..

but failed giving sql error.
also when tried to restore the Database from one server to other
server got a sql error ARERR 552 ( Login failure).

 Please advise,

2009-10-26 Thread Easter, David
Ø These were the biggest issues encountered in a 4-5 hour brief run through on
7.5 (via mid-tier) with JAWS 10.

Unfortunately, JAWS 10 implements changes that are incompatible with how
structures are read with JAWS 7.0.1 - which is what AR System 7.5.00 (and
therefore ITSM 7.x) was coded against. BMC is attempting to compensate for
this incompatibility introduced by Freedom Scientific in our AR System 8.0.00
release, which will support JAWS 10.

For apples to apples review, it would be best to use JAWS 7.0.1 - which is
stated in the compatibility matrix as the supported screen reader - for use
with AR System 7.5.00.

Yes, I already have.

The main concerns center around:
The status flow bar and the significant use of images (which are not read by a
screen reader and are not recognized as a tab stop). Images cannot be the only
means to convey a message/result/status.
So
it seems some functionality has been lost either in the application or it might
be a JAWS 10 thing, but we have not been able to find a JAWS 10 setting for
this.
Field tabbing issues. Tabbing in order is extremely important.
Data visualization fields.

These were the biggest issues encountered in a 4-5 hour brief run through on
7.5 (via mid-tier) with JAWS 10.
More issues as encountered are being reported.

All,
For anyone who is using the Task Flow engine in Change Management in more
than a trivial way, you may have encountered bugs that prevent a built flow
from behaving as expected.

The correction
was to modify the Push Fields to set Status = Flow Not Followed
== This was the principle bug we found. Fixing this caused the bypass of
Task Groups to function properly.

2. Filter TMS:FLW:Bypassed_TaskEvaluate`!
The Run If qualification was looking for Status = Flow Followed to check
for bypassed rather than Flow Not Followed. No doubt this bug was hidden
because of the first one above (or created because the first one could not
be found.) The correction was to change the Run If condition to check for
Status = Flow Not Followed.

Chuck Baldi

Re: Password for Demo Account ? Reset.

2009-10-26 Thread Joe DeSouza
Raj,

First of all, whats your DB? Oracle? MS-SQL? Can't really comment on why your
restoration may not be working cause different databases have different types
of restoration tools, that work slightly differently from each other..

Can you log into the database using the ARAdmin username and its password using
the database client and perform any transactions at all against any of the
Remedy tables or views? Do a simple select or update to a non critical data
form or record to confirm this.

If you reset the DB password from the DB client, you could set the DB-Password
configuration line in the AR Configuration file in clear text and restart the
ARS, the ARS will recognize that.. you can then reset this password using the
Remedy configuration utility and the utility will encrypt the new password..
Check with your DBA on how often you can change your DB passwords though in
case they have any such policies or you may get stuck with a clear text
password in your config line for some time until you are allowed to change the
password again..

Yes, using JAWS 7.0.1 results in the field data being read.

Still didn’t address the images and trim text issues. It never did.

The reason we tried JAWS 10 is because JAWS 7.0.1 is off Freedom’s support

Looking for ways to validate or lock down and then audit foundation data changes

2009-10-26 Thread Howard Richter
Good morning, afternoon and evening all,

Here is a question posed to BMC with no response so far. As we know all of
the ITSM 7 foundation data has been placed in a number of different forms
with no way of placing this data some type of lock down or good audit trail
(other then the last one who modified the record).

So my question to the greatest and most intelligent group of Remedy
programmers that exists in this world or any world (if you believe that
there is Remedy in other worlds), is “How to audit and validate changes to
all foundation data and where is all of the data stored?”

That is if an audit of all changes to all foundation data is requested, how
could anyone provide that information, without modifying the system?

I was asked the question and had some programming ideas, but the customer is
trying to stay out of the box.

As always thanks,

,

Bug SW00324022 was also created for the same defect, it is the one
referenced in the ITSM 7.6 release notes. In addition to this bug, there is
bug SW00345321, also referenced in the ITSM 7.6 release notes, about task
 phasing too.

Because of these bugs, it is not recommended to use the task phasing
functionality introduced in ITSM 7.5.1. Seems to me all the Task management
module code needs to be reviewed and clean up.

 Subject: Task Flow bugs corrected

 All,
For anyone who is using the Task Flow engine in Change Management in more
than a trivial way, you may have encountered bugs that prevent a built flow
from behaving as expected.

The correction
was to modify the Push Fields to set Status = Flow Not Followed
== This was the principle bug we found. Fixing this caused the bypass of
 Task Groups to function properly.

 2. Filter TMS:FLW:Bypassed_TaskEvaluate`!
The Run If qualification was looking for Status = Flow Followed to check
for bypassed rather than Flow Not Followed. No doubt this bug was hidden
because of the first one above (or created because the first one could not
be found.) The correction was to change the Run If condition to check for
 Status = Flow Not Followed.

 3. Filter TMS:TGR:Bypassed`!
This filter was not properly setting the DO variable zTmpInternal when a
Task Group within another Task Group was being bypassed. When this
 happened
the change of Status to Bypassed was being interpreted as a user input
change which caused the filter TMS:SHR:Inactive_StatusLock to generate an
error. This caused all pending flow updates to roll back leaving the flow
unusable. The correction was to add zTmpInternal = Yes to the third
 Push
 Fields If Action.

 4. Filter TMS:FLW:CheckForOtherFailedFlows
I consider this a defect. In a merged flow (i.e., a Task with multiple
input flows) if ANY input flow was bypassed, this filter caused the task
 and
all downstream flows to also be bypassed.

Despite what its help
 text
says, this was only setting the source field for a data label if the data
variable was an OUTPUT. We need the labels to be set when they are INPUT
 as
well. My correction was to copy the filter and add the opposite condition,
in this case ('zTmpVariableID' != $NULL)

I hope this saves someone some time and pain.

 Regards,
 Chuck Baldi

Re: Looking for ways to validate or lock down and then audit foundation data changes

2009-10-26 Thread Joe DeSouza
Howard,

There is nothing currently that would let you do that within the framework of
the application as it comes out of the box.

Even the Audit function available with the ARS Server post version 6.3, will
not really do what you want. What you require calls for customization.

Since you say you want to validate foundation data change, you would probably
need to build another front-end and a duplicate respository to every piece of
foundation data you want to validate before updating. The data you want to
update could be set up as a ticket in this duplicate repository, which could be
reviewed by some sort of a approval team, and given the green flag commited to
the actual foundation form that it belongs to.

The repository containing suggested updates to the foundation data could then
hold the audit information as it would contain information of what that record
was updated to over time..

Good morning, afternoon and evening all,

Here is a question posed to BMC with no response so far.  As we know all of the
ITSM 7 foundation data has been placed in a number of different forms with no
way of placing this data some type of lock down or good audit trail (other then
the last one who modified the record).

So my question to the greatest and most intelligent group of Remedy programmers
that exists in this world or any world (if you believe that there is Remedy in
other worlds), is “How to audit and validate changes to all foundation data and
where is all of the data stored?”

That is if an audit of all changes to all foundation data is requested, how
could anyone provide that information, without modifying the system?

I was asked the question and had some programming ideas, but the customer is
trying to stay out of the box.

As always thanks,

,

Hi Guillaume,

of course you can use it in production. The version is only an
internal number.

The application will get version 1.0 when the export of DSO Mapping
and Pools is implemented.

Thanks,
Norbert

 Hi All,

I'm pleased to announce a new version of ARSExport (version 0.73).

ARSExport supports you to export BMC Remedy Action Request System
workflow objects while using a CSV file.
Do you track your workflow changes e. g with Server Events? Create a
simple CSV-file with the types and names of the required objects,
import it to ARSExport do some checks and create a DEF-file.
ARSExport was developed on Mac OS X with Netbeans 6.7, Java 1.6 (JRE
required) and ARS Java API 7.5 (necessary files included in the
download package). Tested under Windows XP, Linux and Mac Os X with AR
 server versions 7.1 and 7.5.
You will find the application on kenai.com
 http://kenai.com/projects/arsexport/downloads
A brief description you will find in the wiki
 http://kenai.com/projects/arsexport/pages/Home
Please mail your suggestions, comments or problems to arsexp...@bolmer.info
 Thank you for using ARSExport.

 Br,
 Norbert
