Re: Can Client 5.1.2 be used while the ARS server has been upgraded to 7.1

2008-07-31 Thread Howard Richter
That is not a good idea at all. We found a number of issues with 7.0.0 patch
2 of the client on a patch 3 system, I am not sure what you would get with a
version that old.

If its an issue getting v.7 of the tool to your users, maybe move them to
the Web.

Issues with mid-tier 7.1 pathc 3 (after trying to go to SSL)

2008-07-30 Thread Howard Richter
Ladies and Gentlemen:

I have a strange issue with 7.1 patch 3 mid-tier (on Windows) and looking
for any ideas.

I needed to move to SSL and changed the tomcat conf file, then added the
cert and was able to log in to the system using https port 8443 (what I
set). Then I changed the default web and notification path to the new port.
I even bounced the box.

I am able to log in (through the mid-tier) and see the ITSM home page,
however when I click on some of the links (like the incident consol), after
a minute or so I get a blank screen page (that says its complete and
secure). If I try to go to the url (and need to re-log in) I get a The page
cannot be displayed

The strange thing is some pages work (such as the approval central) however
if I go to use the Incident consol, no luck.

Just for testing I have pointed my production mid-tier (we are going live
8/1) to the dev app server and it works great.

Any idea would be helpful,

As always thanks,

Howard

and sub report would be 'Incident ID' of the HPD:Help Desk form to the
'Request ID' of the HPD:Associations form.

You will want to add an additional sub report criteria of 'Request Type01'
= Configuration Item, and display the 'Request Description' which is the
name of the CI. Sounds like this should get you what you need.

We have modified several reports for our use (particularly, making the
Notes area grow). The issue I believe you're having is with the ODBC
connection credentials assumed by the canned reports. The OOTB (canned)
reports will work with the credentials BMC embedded, but if you modify
them, you'll have to work with your local credentials.

First of all, save a copy of the original report (but you already knew
that). Make desired changes to a copy, and verify the database. Make
sure that the new connection is using valid local user credentials
and/or ODBC connection settings. Replace the file in the Report form
record, and you should be on your way.

They just will not pull anything back from the database.

For example take any of the incidnet reports, I have connected to the
database and when I refrech the report from Crystam, it will prompt you
and then say that there was no data to pull back.

If then create a new report (also on the HPD:Helpdek) it runs great.

Its very strange, almost like its not talking to the same database, but
 there is only one connection.

 Hi,

I have a question regarding LDAP pertaining to AR Server 7.1. I
have read in the guides somewhere that unless both the user name and
password are stored in the local AR Server, the users are not considered
registered users. In Multi-tenancy guest users are not allowed (and we have
multi-tenancy turned on). I want to know what are my options. Do I have to
import the password as well. I don't think its doable because LDAP would be
encrypting them and even if I do import them AR Server needs to know how to
decrypt them. Is my analogy of the situation right? if so what can I do. If
 not please correct me.

BMC Out of Box reports

2008-07-28 Thread Howard Richter
Good afternoon all,

I hope you had a great weekend.

Now for the question, has anyone had issues with modifying the out of box
crystal reports?

I can create new reports with no issues, however I am getting some strange
issues changing the out of box ones.

FYI: this is ITSM 7, patch 7 running on 7.1 patch 3.

Thanks,

Re: BMC Out of Box reports

2008-07-28 Thread Howard Richter
They just will not pull anything back from the database.

For example take any of the incidnet reports, I have connected to the
database and when I refrech the report from Crystam, it will prompt you and
then say that there was no data to pull back.

If then create a new report (also on the HPD:Helpdek) it runs great.

Its very strange, almost like its not talking to the same database, but
there is only one connection.

Not without a lot of work. You can give the company a nickname and then
change the nickname, but that's the only easy solution. There was a thread

This one was a little interesting...and useful - read on:

Some background - there is sensitive information in this system. I am not
really supposed to say what but I'll just call them personal unique
identifiers (PUI). For the sake of example let's say the field ID is
 12345.

These identifiers can go into a case if appropriate.

We do NOT want people to be able to search on the identifier. Consequently
I added field 1005 to the form. This is a system field which holds the
content of the advanced search bar. When a person is in Query mode the
denier field is disabled so they can not type in it. If they use advanced
search you can run an active link that fires on the search like this:

'Search Bar' LIKE %PUI% OR 'Search Bar' LIKE %$12345$%

You can spit out the appropriate thou shalt not error messageHOWEVER
 - it turns out that adding the search bar field to the view forces the
Advanced Search button to disabled - this is appropriate because the
system field would be on there twice if it was turned on and selected.

The answer - add the field to the form but do not have it in the view(s)
you are using. Since it's system field it still works correctly in the
workflow without being in the view.

not been able to figure it out and have been going round and round trying
different things since we can't duplicate with any other user. She receives
the error ARERR 9201 - invalid session when performing almost any action in
the app. Wondering if anyone else is having this problem or have any
suggestions on where to look for resolution or a workaround. We are in the
process upgrading the dev web server to MidTier 7.1 but need a
 workaround/fix until then.

We have tried comparing IE settings, different user names, etc…sometimes
she is working but most of the time she is not. Of course, we have deleted
cache, cookies and history on numerous occasions. Another weird thing that I
noticed today is that when she logs out, the license tool still shows that
 she is connected.

We would be grateful for any suggestions at this time.

Not at this time, no. Internal discussions are still occurring about how
to address the more complex requirements of the Windows market based on the
large percentage of individuals still using 32-bit systems with AR System.
Many customers are using 32-bit desktop or laptop systems as

RE; AIE engine; When adding or changing a data exchange in the aie engine the changed event does not get picked up.

2008-07-10 Thread Howard Richter
Good morning All,

I hope everyone is doing ok.

We are in the process of setting up a number of events in the AIE engine
(7.1.00 Patch 002 200803102100) and when we change the timing or order, the
change is not picked up.

For example we had data exchange A which kicks off B, then B would kick off
C (the first one set to run at 1am, the next two event driven). If we change
the order to have A kick off C and then C kick off B. That change never is
picked up. The system will still run the order A, B, C.

Also if I change the time of kick off of data exchange A from 8am to 9am at
7am, the 8am exchange will still run.

We have tried restarting the AIE services, as well as all Remedy services,
with no luck.

I assume that there is a queue some place, that needs to be cleaned out or
refreshed, but can not find anything in the docs on how to do that.

Any ideas?

AIE engine export/import strange issue

2008-07-08 Thread Howard Richter
Good morning all,

Has anyone tried to export and then import Intergration Objects from the AIE
engine and then checked the Instances Console?

The reasion I ask, is I found in the console, Instances from the server that
I just import from.

That is if I export from ITSM-test and then import to ITSM-prod, I now see
instances from both prod and test.

Thanks,

Happy July 4th

2008-07-03 Thread Howard Richter
To All,

Have a great 4th of July. I know this list is carried all over the world,
but as we Americans enjoy our celebration of Freedom I hope we think about
the men and women who are away from their families in harms way, as well
as those who have given their lives so we can be free.

America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral
fact - the first community in which men set out in principle to
institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality.

May the sun in his course visit no land more free, more happy, more lovely,
than this our own country! ~Daniel Webster

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not
with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a
show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw
Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You

64-bit Oracle databases are currently supported as remote databases in the
existing versions of AR System. As per the compatibility matrix, Oracle
does support a 32-bit DB client to communicate with a 64-bit database.
However, a 64-bit Oracle database client would be needed when running AR
System 7.5.00 on UNIX or Linux since the AR System server executable itself
 will be 64-bit.

Windows 64-bit native execution is not expected to be part of this
release. We expect that native 64-bit execution support for the AR System
server on Windows will be part of a future release. As you mention, 64-bit
Windows operating systems will continue to be supported in 32-bit
compatibility mode as the AR System server executable will continue to be
 32-bit on Windows platforms.

 **

 Hi,

Has anyone experienced end-user performance problems with Remedy over
 larger networks?

We're running a suite of bespoke applications, and are finding that some
tasks such as opening/updating incidents can take orders of magnitude longer
in some locations. For example it can take me 8 seconds, but a colleague at
another location 2 or 3 minutes.

Have been able to do some local benchmarks - typical ping responses are
circa 10ms, but at points when we find that even our performance is hit, we
find the network is responding to pings at maybe 60+ms. Our network guys
invariably say that the network is running fine ...

So it appears that Remedy, or at least the applications we're running, are
incredibly sensitive to network performance. Any suggestions from the list
as to what we can do to improve performance?

 Regards

 Dave

I talked to BMC yesterday and they say the tool is in testing and should be
out soon.

However they would not define what soon is.

condition for the data exchange to run. This was not a problem in 7.1 or
patch 001, and is supposed to be fixed in patch 003, but if this is your
problem BMC has a hotfix for the problem… a newer eie.exe and two dlls. The
oradpr.dll was one of the changed files (the sql server adapter was not).

remote oracle database. The Server is 7.1 patch 3 and using MSSQL.

I have installed the 10g client and can talk to the remote Oracle system
using sqlplus from the box where the arserver is running.

There is nothing in any log that I can find, that shows any attempt of the
AIE trying to connect to the Oracle database.

I did try setting up the AIE to talk to a MSSQL database and that worked.

I am starting to wonder if, you can only talk to a database that the server
talks to (for example in my case only MSSQL, since that is what the server
 is talking to).

Any ideas, as of yet BMC support has had non.

 Kathy,

If you are trying to run BO Crystal Reports XI .rpt files through the
Remedy User Tool, I think, and someone correct me if I am wrong, XI is
not supported even though the manuals say so, you have to use version
 10. Crystal XI is meant to be used when accessing through the Mid-Tier
or directly from the browser via the BO Crystal Reports Enterprise
Server XI, which will cost your customers some serious cash to stand
 up
due to the fact that SAP is raising the cost of Crystal Reports
Enterprise CPU Licenses another 22% in mid June! Anyone who is
 planning
on standing up or buying another CPU license for the Crystal XI
Enterprise Server go out an buy your licenses now!

I ran into the same issues when testing out Crystal with AR System
version 7.1.0 but Crystal version 10 worked for me. I ran into a lot
 of
issues and limitations with using Crystal 10 through the User Client
 and
had to develop a user interface to force feed my SQL parameters
 through
the active links instead of using the actual .rpt file to run the
 query
when using the user client. We are going with the Enterprise Server XI
 for reporting.

that are not opening in Remedy. Remedy says this is a customization

Only the original OOB reports run. I built an open window action AL,
and the Report still does not run. There is no qualification for the
report to pass thru the parameter. Does anyone have an idea why the
 reports are not opening?

There were 3 steps:
1. Add .rpt as attachment to Report Form
2. Fill in Category info in Report Form
3. Click Run Report button

Am I missing a step?

Re: Question: Is anyone out there running Mid-Tier v7.1.0 on a 64-bit Windows 2003 OS with a 64-bit JVM?

2008-06-12 Thread Howard Richter
I tried to install on 64 bit and it would not install, so I used the 32 bit
java.

Good luck

 ** All,

I just got off the phone with BMC Technical Support and they told me
that they do not support nor recommend running Mid-Tier v7.1.0 on top of a
64-bit Java Virtual Machine. The reason why they do not support this is
because their engineer's have not completed their testing Mid-Tier 7.1.0
with a 64-bit JVM. They did say that some of their customers are running
this configuration anyway and some are not running into any issues but of
course could not give me any people to talk too nor any details. This is not
good because the first time around I talked to Remedy Support and they
assured me that they supported 64-bit OS's and that the server configuration
below would handle what we want to accomplish so, confidently I ordered the
servers. Now, to my surprise, I caught a sub-clause in their compatibility
matrix that said they do not support the 64-bit JVM. This is bad news.

I would like to know if there is anyone out there that has this setup
(below) or something like it, and I would like to know, if any, what bugs
have you experienced with running Mid-Tier over a 64-bit JVM?

We plan to run 2 load balanced Mid-Tier servers each with Quad Xeon Intel
based processors with 16GB of RAM using Windows 2003 64-bit as the OS and
Tomcat as the JVM. We can only use Windows server so UNIX and Solaris are
 out of the question.

We plan to deploy the Mid-Tier to out customer base as part of a front-end
customer support website where customers can submit and update their own
tickets. We plan to scale the aforementioned server configuration out to
 about 20,000 customers.

Will the 2 Web Servers support that type of environment? Also, with that
many customers to be supported could those 2 servers also handle another 100
 licensed Support Staff?

 Are their any other options?

 Thanks.

this? I thought that you could update Non-Support Staff people's

PDF's I could find and found nothing on this.

How can I update Non-Support Staff People records notification
 preferences?

If Out-of-Box there is no way to do this is it recommended to make a
customization? I found the active link that enables the Update
Notification Preferences button on the CTM:People form so that it
enables for Non-Support Staff people records will this work or is it
 more complicated than this?

My customers need to be able to update non-support staff people records.
Please if someone has done this before could you give me some hints of a
workaround or at least a place to start.

 Thanks

Ravi,

And BMC support told me to do that for the mail messages form when I did my
go-live (with ITSM 7, patch 2) last year, since the number of messages this

Maybe BMC needs to create a clean up program, if the OOB method (the

 Application-Delete-Entry BMC:SSP:Issue $Request ID$

Also is there a recommended way to delete data from this form rather

opening in Remedy. Remedy says this is a customization so no help. Even
when we tried to copy the OOB reports into a new record, the new copies did
not open when we select Run Report button. Only the original OOB reports
run. I built an open window action AL, and the Report still does not run.
There is no qualification for the report to pass thru the parameter. Does
anyone have an idea why the reports are not opening?

 *There were 3 steps*:
 1. Add .rpt as attachment to Report Form
 2. Fill in Category info in Report Form
 3. Click Run Report button

 Am I missing a step?

I believe that this error is cause by the presence of LONG datatypes
that still exist in Oracle on the Production level causing it to fail when
it attempts to DSO onto another server (even though i am aware that Oracle
no longer considers LONG an appropriate datatype). I have the textual
evidence to support this, but I need proof from the program itself, which i
have been unable to find. I was wondering if anyone else was operating on a
similar setting and experiencing similar issues? And if so, how you have
solved the issue or are currently dealing with the problem. Any help would
 be much appreciated.

Re: Issue installing itsm patch 7

2008-06-03 Thread Howard Richter
All,

I just got this from Ben Healy. Looks like there is a bug in patch 007.

Defect #SW00290729 - ITSM7 patch007 installer failed with Internal Error:
Unable to build patch summary. Installation cannot continue. See attached
installer log.

The problem can be caused if the SHARE:Application_Properties form does not
have Property Name = DataLanguage and / or Property Name =LanguagePacks for
each ITSM application.

If either of the above are missing they will need to be created (see
attached SHARE_Application_Properties.zip for example) before re-running the
installation.

Re: Need help on sending SMS

2008-04-01 Thread Howard Richter
Kalyani,

Since the sms is just a short e-mail message, you could (if on unix) create
a short shell script that would call mailx. This could be called by a
filter.

 ** Hi Kalyani,

You would probably need an SMS gateway (usually from your telecom
 provider) to send SMSs.
This gateway will have an interface in the form of a web service / API
 call / Database record.
Depending on the gateway, you could right workflow in Remedy to either
make an API call, run a script, execute SQL etc. The parameters passed would
be the message with ticket details and a mobile number.

 Hi All

We need help on sending SMS. My client wants to receive a SMS whenever the
 priority 1 ticket is raised.

Is there any functionality available in ITSM 7? Or can we use the pager
 functionality to configure SMS?

It would be helpful for us if anybody share this functionality.

 Thanks Regards

 Kalyani

This workaround should still be valid on later versions of ARS.

 Andy,

If you hare having the field patterned using $MENU$, why
do you type into it or let your users type into it? Can't you just have the
character field displayed as a drop-list and have the users forced to use
the menus? That's an available feature in ARS version 6.3 upwards.. That
would be clean and you would get what you want to do...

If you are below version 6, and somewhere close to
version 4.5, there used to be a bug with the $MENU$ patterning.. Even
valid values would be rejected. The only fix on that version was to upgrade
it. I do not recall a patch that fixed it except the next upgrade..

 Cheers

Dee,

I just tried it on a patch 4 system and it worked.

1. Looked for any tasks tied to a change request (found one that had 4
tasks)
2. Opened up one of the tasks and copied the Request ID number
CRQxxx
3. Opened up the task form in search and then pasted in the CRQ number.

The system found all 4 tasks.

It could be an issue with patch 6.

Also, let's assume the arserver is on port 7800 and the plugin-port is

Re: 7.1 Server License Question

2008-02-12 Thread Howard Richter
I was playing with a flightdeck (BMC was still shipping out
7.0.1flightdecks as of 2 weeks ago) and after the upgrade (of just the
server) it
showed as not licensed (after a restart). I had exported the license file
(before the upgrade) and tried to import it back in, with no luck. However
when I go back to the orginal flightdeck it is licensed.

I am glad this was not tried at a customer site.

Re: Question: Overview Console - ITSM 7 - Missing Incidents

2008-01-17 Thread Howard Richter
There was an issue with this when we installed 7.0.0 patch and and we
received a hot fix from BMC. When we tried to install patch 5 of the server,
one of support engineers told me he thought the issue (of missing Incidents,
might been back in patch 4 of ITSM, but was addressed in patch 5.

So look at the readme for the newest ITSM patch.

Re: Question: ITSM 7.0 - Overview Console

2007-12-12 Thread Howard Richter
Roger,

This should give you a starting place. I have added items on the Incidnet
and Task forms and then moved that data to the Overview Console.

Good Luck,

Howard

---

The Overview Console Table is populated using a plugin. The plugin returns
records from forms that are defined the SHR:ARDBC_OverviewConsoleTemplate
form. The Plugin will look at the Form Guid in this form, and search that
form. For example you will see the following 8 records in the
SHR:ARDBC_OverviewConsoleTemplate:

*FORM NAME*

*FORM GUID*

TMS:Task

TMSTASK

HPD:Helpdesk

MAINHELPDESK

PBM:Solution Database

MAINKNOWLEDGEDATABAE

PBM:Known Error

MAINKNOWNERROR

PBM:Problem Investigation

MAIONPROBLEM

CHG:Infrastructure Change

MAINCHANGE

AST:PurchaseRequisition

ASTPUREREQUISITION

AST:CI Unavialabilty

ASTCIUNAVIALBLITY

If you are logged into the RUT as appadmin for example, the plugin will
search the above forms to find the records that are assigned to appadmin and
populate the OverviewConsole similar to how the SHR:Consolidated list
worked.

But how are the fields mapped from the forms to the OverviewConsole , this
is done via the SHR:ARDBC fields form. Here you will see mapping for field
from the backend forms to the Vendor form hence populating the form. Form
example if you would like have more information in the Overview console, for
instance the First Name*+ field from the HPD:Helpdesk form.

The database id for this field is 100019 (in HPD:Helpdesk). This field
already exists in the forms:

SHR:ARDBC_OverviewConsoleTemplate

SHR:ARDBC_OverviewConsole

so we do not need to create it again ( you can map any fieldID the database
id do not have to match ,as long the database length is sufficient). But for
this example, the database ID are matching.

To create a mapping for the HPD:Helpdesk form. Open the SHR:ARDBCFields form
in new mode and use the following values:

FieldID: 100019

FormGUID: MAINHELPDESK

Vendor Field ID: 100019

Submitter: ARSystem

Open the SHR:OverviewConsole in the Admin Tool.

- open the table z2TH_ConsolidateTable1 properties

- on tab Table/Tree Property

- Look for First Name under Fields on Form and click Add

- Double click on the column First Name and add public Permissions

- Save and close the form.

Restart the plugin or ARServer.Open the OverviewConsole and there should now
be data for the First Name from the Incidents form.

Re: Putting ARS 7.0.1 into production question

2007-12-12 Thread Howard Richter
Ricki,

A clean cut is the best bet. I like to use the 1st of a month over using a
weekend, so reporting can be cleaner.

A good date would have been the 1st of Dec. If weekends are the only way
then look at one as close to the end of the month as you can.

Just my 1 and 1/2 cents.

 Hello,

After some weeks of testing in a dev environment, we're about ready to put
ARS 7.0.1 along with Incident and Problem Management into production. I've
purged the licenses from the current production server so we have 60 days to
get everyone up and running on the new server. The question is how to go
 about flipping the switch.

Management wants to slowly (over a 3 – 4 week period) migrate support
people with fixed/floating licenses from the old server in order to not slow
down production. All of our customers are internal users and usually need
help right away, not a few hours later. Surely there must be a better way.
I think if everyone is trained on the new system we should be able to move
everyone over at one time. We have 4 - 5 people manning the phones at the
Help Desk and they take approximately 150 calls per day, along with emails
and forms for user access changes. I can do a daily transfer of tickets
remaining open to the new server but that's a nightmare in itself. If two
phone support people are on the old system and they get calls on tickets
entered into the new system that day, that customer will see a delay in
service while waiting for the support person on the new system to get back
to them. Anyone have an idea that's probably staring me in the face?

 Thanks,

 Ricki Haines

Interested to know if anyone has ever loaded ~1 Million INCs to ITSM
v7. We have a request to convert from an existing system, and are
keen to know how long this might take for an 'OOB' load (assuming no
custom fields, single work info etc...). BMC have advised that there
are some key parameters that drive the time it takes to do the import

If someone has perfomed a large import before, and happy to share
their load time stats we would be most appreciative.

 Thanks very much
