willing to translate are reading your post. You want people researching in
the Sao Miguel Arcanjo church of Vila Franca to read your post. I suggest
something like: Family of Francisco da Souza and Iria de Mello from Vila
Franca, early 1700s. Post what you have on the family and that you are
after Marianna's birth. Someone may have it.  Cheri

I’m trying to find Marianna’s place of birth. I think it’s Matriz, but not 100% 
sure. Can someone transcribe the last part of this record that has her parents 
and church.

OK, but my dictionary (Portuguese & English) says bride and groom are
noivo/noiva. I wasn't using a Spanish dictionary :(

Good to know about the contraente with the old spelling of contrahente.
Just the article will be the tip off then. I'll make a post it note :)

Just adding a small remark to Margaret's explanation.

In current Portuguese for "to get maried" one can use "casar" or more
formally "contrair matrimónio". "contraente" has the same root as
"contrair".

 I did not find a translation for JR's word spelling. I did look up
 groom in my dictionary and was given the word cavalariço and it does also
 mean bride. So maybe the word in the document is similar in mean both groom
 and bride

What is the brides name? I originally thought this was the marriage of  Manuel
Gonsalves Fagundes and Clara dos  Anjos. Now I am thinking it is the
marriage of their son to _

Am I totally off base?

Cheri, novia & novio are spanish words.

groom= noivo; bride= noiva.  When talking about the couple they are called
os "Noivos".

The Contrahente, is old spelling, now is Contraente.

The Contraente/Contractors refers to those are contracting matrimony.

It is only differentiated by the article 'a' or 'o'.  Thus *o* contraente
[noivo/groom]  e *a* contraente [noiva].

If you google translate the word contraente you will get it.

contrehente" and "o contrehente" is bride and groom when it's the same
word. The bride should at least have an "a" there. Is that the correct

I'm trying to decipher a marriage record from Fenais da Luz.  The part that I 
can't figure out is the grooms information: his name is Manuel Pereira de 
Fontes, a native of Rabo de Peixe, but it doesn't list his parents.
The record is from 1725, and it mentions something about 1724.  I appreciate 
any help.  Thank you.  the record is on the bottom, right side of the page.

Aaron,

Unfortunately the Priest neglected to enter his parents names on the
marriage record.  With reference to 1724,  it says that he was
dis-obligated in the past lent of 1724.  It means he had met his
obligations and paid his dues.

The writing is horrible I see Senhor Bom Jesus Ribeira Seca which is the parish 
where he is from. That is about all I can make out. The possibilities are 1: he 
is an exposto 2: he is a widower 3: the scribe forgot to name them.

on 16 Apr 1671 in Ginetes, Sao Miguel. However, I don't know if the people 
listed at the end of the record are parents or others? Can someone help me 
understand who these people are and their names?

To reach the widest audience, you are better off sending the link to the
CCA web site.   That way, all 1100+ people on this list will be able to
read the record. On my computer, I cannot enlarge your image at all.  It's
microscopic.

Also, make it as easy on the translators and those learning to read by
telling us which record (left or right; or in the case of 2 on one page,
then upper left or lower left, etc).

Bride's mother:  Agada.  Then it looks like Sanches maybe?  I haven't run
across any Sanches' in my research.  Hope someone can make that out.

Fred,The bride's mother is not Sanches/z.It is definitely SANTA but is spelled in the archaic form of SANCTA.You will find other baptisms and marriages and likely get a more clear record to confirm it.I have many people, including my own ancestor, named Santa. Mine is Maria Santa from Terceira.You will find over the centuries that some priests spell it Santa and others as Sancta. Sorry Doug, but in this case I disagree. Notice that there is a Z at the end of 
Águeda's family name. And, more definitvely, Rodrigo Rodrigues, (Genealogias de 
São Miguel e Santa Maria) has the couple as Ventura Ferreira and Águeda Sanches 
(p.3000). Rodrigo Rodrigues, like all mortals, was capable of error. However, 
he spent his entire adult life reading those records and I would consider him 
an Azorean paleographer without equal. But he and I could be wrong. I learned 
the hard way, a long time ago, not to be dogmatic when it comes to these 
things. Whenever I have a doubt I ask 2-3 other researchers to take a look at 
the same record, without telling them what I think it says, and ask them to 
tell me how they read it. Even then in some cases there is no consensus. 

About 10 years ago I found the marriage of record of one of my ancestors from 
Ribeira Grande, from the time of Gaspar Frutuoso's immediate predecessor. 
Although the writing was clear and sharp, no matter how long I stared at it, I 
could not decipher it. For an additional cost, I asked the archives to send me 
a typed transcription. The director at the time gave the project over to one of 
the paleograhers and I received a typed transcription in due time. Years later, 
when I purchased the 6 volumes by Rodrigo Rodrigues, I looked for that 
information. The paleographer and Rodrigo Rodrigues were in complete agreement. 
 

No doubt there are Azoreans with the family name Santa (or Sancta), but I do 
not think that this Águeda is one of them.

I can certainly see how the squiggle after the last letter, which I say is SANCTA, looks like a Z and that would clearly be Sanchez. But I would be more convinced it's Sanchez if I saw another example and that should be no trouble for anyone interested in this family.So Fred, once you make more progress and find another example, please pass it on to the list for all to evaluate.Yes, I could be wrong. But so could everyone else. I am reminded of some "authorities" at the Angra archive sending me a transcribed entry of a record on microfilm that was so severely faded I had to fork out money for them to read it and give me their answer, plus a copy. When I got the copy, it was way better than film and I found I could read it. I also discovered those at the archive could not do it justice and got it wrong. Also, someone once contacted me about some Sao Bartolomeu, Terceira families named Rocha, I believe it's one of our list members, Marcio de Borba, who was told by Jorge Forjaz (publisher of many genealogy books) some names and it was a misreading of the record. Sure we are all trying to read sometimes very difficult records and sometimes the priests got a little sloppy, too. That opens the door to errors. Geez, this is s light and Ponta Delgada didn't scan them at a high
resolution or in color, so this really makes it hard.

I think the groom is 18 and the bride 20.

The bride's father: Manuel de Arruda Correia? Cabral.  I don't really think
it's Arruda or Correia.  The mother: Rosa didade, but that just doesn't
seem right.  I've seen Trindade with women.

OK, someone else can have a turn at this!

1854

The bride is Maria do Carmo de Arruda, her parents are Manuel Arruda do

The reason you don't see parents for Francisco Jose is because he is
listed as the widower of Joanna Francisca of Nossa Senhora de Piadade.
Rosalia de Jesus' parents are Manuel de Souza and Luzia? de Madruga?.

Mary,

As Rosemarie said, Francisco is a widower, so you'll need his first
marriage to Joanna Francisca to get his parents.

I'm reading the bride's parents as Manuel da Souza and Luiza de Medeyros
which is Medeiros today.

Ribeira Quente broke off from Ponta Garca.  That's why you see that in the
record.
