Re: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2013-07-12 Thread Meghna Chopra

Hello Russ,

Sometime ago, you told that you are developing a module to create CF DSN using
WSP.
Are you still working on that?

I raised this in a different thread but nobody replied
http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/thread.cfm/threadid:64703 :(

Any ideas?

Fyi websitepanel is more active now, 2.0 released this year and 2.1
currently in beta, supports Windows 2012.
Do not use its ecommerce system though it is awful, but the rest of it
works really well.
We use it for all our Windows hosting and I also use it for
cfmldeveloper.com

I did the following and everything seems fine now.

-Open Administrative Tools-Event Viewer and if you see the following
 W3SVC-WP (IIS6) error messages:

Thanks for the note, but my VPS seems to be having far greater problems than
just this. I don't have Virtuozzo access, and anytime I try to access stuff
through RD, it keeps bumping me off. I'd like to at least grab a copy of all my
client's sites that I am hosting so I can move them myself, as it's pretty
clear at this point that I need to find a new host. I've gotten nothing but the
run-around from Greg, and frankly, at this point I have no faith that the
problems are going to be fixed anytime soon.

My RDC, sites, and VPC are down now.

I can only hope this is the worse part in
things usually get worse before they get better.

But not providing some word, either through email or
on the website is especially poor form.

It looks like the VPC update just went terribly awry.

I just he'd let us know something. Having problems is
understandable, but my clients are only going to be so patient.

Now I remember why I bought my own server and ran it in-house
for the last 8 or so years.

Greg's running on about 8 hours sleep since Friday, and as you might expect,
he's trying to answer at least some e-mails while still working on the

That's not an excuse. Just another bit of information.

There's now a thread specifically about the AHP problem. I posted a note
from Greg there. And that would probably be a better place to continue the
conversation about AHP (although this conversation has moved on to DNS and
mail issues, too).

My server is little used and has tons of free space if you need to set
something up temporarily (I've got Windows 2003, IIS 6, CF 7 Pro).

I'm working from home today so I could give you access pretty quickly.

Mine is pretty much gone at this point. He was really giving me a great

I host/manage all of my domains at http://www.namesdirect.com/ - they do
basic DNS, email forwarding, etc. I then point to my own DNS server. The
big issue would be DNS propagation but that's a matter of hours for the vast
majority (and if you've been down for days...).

I'm pretty sure it's all free service (they want you to pay them for
renewals) but I've been using them for years and never had a problem (I've
got 19 domains with them).

I run my own DNS and mail settings (for the domains that use their mail)
right through a DNS manager. I haven't had any problems so far.

I think I'll take the secondary email address I use, whose domain is hosted

and see how it goes.

I know this is all OT for the list, Michael... but it's sure is therapeutic for

My server is set up to use Plesk control panel so all the sites go through
that. Yeah, I know it's kind of sucky, but I'm hosting a bunch of sites for
family members, some of which also use Frontpage Extensions, so was an easy way
to go, and I generally am able to work around some of its annoying limitations.
But in this case, it seems that the Plesk installation got fried in the whole
update process as well and I still can't get any response from my host about
what is going on, if he is working on it, how long that will be, etc. So I'm
getting a backup of my site up in another location as soon as I can.

Which one? There are 3 different ones mentioned in that thread. Really

Re: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-18 Thread Scott Brady
I've been using CT for quite a few years now (2000?) and have been
happy with them.

Until recently. Under CF7, the $17/month plan gave you access to SQL
Server. However, if you want to upgrade to CF8, you either have to
pay for a higher-end plan or migrate off of SQL Server. So, I was
going to start migrating some code to mySQL, but CT has a permission
setting that won't allow you to use the mySQL-equivalent of
getdate() as a default value for a column. That, of course, means I
would have to change a lot of code just to go to CF8.

Maybe I shouldn't expect SQL Server with the $17 plan, but since I
already have that, I certainly didn't expect to lose SQL server just
to upgrade to CF8.

So, the upgrade is on-hold, and I'll probably change hosts when I have
to move to 8.

Not to threadjack (since this doesn't meet the OP's requirements), but
i'll throw out another recommendation for AHP. I pulled the trigger
on their VPS a couple of months ago after being on shared hosting
forever. It's a welcome change.

Ironically, after posting a recommendation for AHP, my VPS server has been down
for over 24 hours now due to some problem with the virtualization software
upgrade. I am pretty understanding of things sometimes going wrong and being
beyond your control, and supposedly he does have SWSoft techs there working on
the problem, but it's still pretty annoying, and I'm beginning to wonder just
*how* long it is going to take for them to get the servers back up again.
Anyone back up yet?

RE: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-18 Thread Rick Faircloth
I was just about to say that I'm down with AHP, but, although
the sites are sluggish coming up, they are coming up.

I can't access the Virtuozzo Control Panel, but that doesn't concern
my much, because most everything I do is done through the
Remote Desktop Connection, anyway, and I can still access the RDC.

I'm pretty understanding about problems with upgrades also, because
I've been running my own server in-house since CF 4.5 came out (and it's
still running well!) and I know that upgrades and hardware issues
will always occur.

It's interesting, however, that what we're talking about here is
Virtualized systems. If I were in Greg's shoes, and it were at all
practical and feasible. I'd create new virtualized systems that are
not in use, making sure they run properly first, before updating any
live virtualized systems. Doing that with virtualized systems wouldn't
involve more hardware, etc., so the cost should be minimal and would
most certainly cut down on production disruption.

But I'm sure he knows a *ton* more about what he's doing than I do.
There just must have been something completely unexpected that occurred.

I hope everyone gets back online soon!

Are you sites down or is it just that your VCP isn't accessible?

Rick

The upgraded License Agreement in CF8 (with regards to VPS's at least)
make it considerably more expensive to offer in a web hosting
environment then CF7 was. In CT's defense (which is odd coming from me)
I would assume that the money that used to be going to pay for MS SQL
Server is now being spent on CF8. Just a guess though. Contrary to
popular belief, profit margins for hosting companies are actually quite
small, so money has to be managed very carefully.

Oh, and when I renewed our SSL cert, they created a new one, and charged us for
both a renewal AND a new one. Now you see one of the reasons I'm moving. :)

Hell Sir,

I have confirmed that the name change was done in error on your account, I
apologize for the inconvience, we are removing this charge from the account and
applying credit for the charge. As for the SSL certification, the Sales

have resolved the name change issue.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

I used Viux for many years. VPS for $75/mo up to 30 domains. CF7, Plesk
interface and RDP. Good service -- no extra charges for support of any kind.
All tags enabled.

I am now moving everything to EnterHost. From about $250 for a CF8 dedicated
box (I'm going for the $300 option) with no domain limit. Plesk is $optional. I
prefer RDP anyway.

When we hit the 50 site mark, at $300/mo that puts each site at $6/mo.

My criteria for 'Holy Grail' is: Inexpensive (always important), Multiple

access to cfobject and other CFC tags, preferably CF8.

In my research the most often come across issue was the multiple domains to
a single hosting account. The few that had it, disabled the cfobject tags

It's inexpensive (starting at $17/mo), is CF8, has extra domains, only has
cfschedule/cfregistry/cfexecute restricted in their admin (spoke with tech

etc. but they don't have CF 8 as yet else highly recommended.

 That is damn impressive.

I've been considering a move and this is definitely something to think
about. (I do like CT a lot but they don't provide CF on their dedicated
boxes and I can't really afford an upgrade... then again I don't really NEED
 an upgrade either.)

Not to threadjack (since this doesn't meet the OP's requirements), but
i'll throw out another recommendation for AHP. I pulled the trigger
on their VPS a couple of months ago after being on shared hosting
forever. It's a welcome change.

10GB (the original allocation) might be a bit low, as I ate up about
45% of that in just installing SQL Server, so I'll probably make like
Rick and spring for a few extra gigs.

Greg (the owner) has been nothing but *extremely* helpful since I made
the transition. He made a point of saying that since he doesn't force
his customers into a contract, he has to make sure to work month to
month to ensure their repeat business. He does, and he's got mine.

Re: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-16 Thread Dave l
They have an excellent customer knowledgebase and support information and
support ticket system but would clearly rather limit human interaction to a
minimum.

Actually they don't, one of my partners still has a dedicated box there and I
have to deal with them all the time and they are a complete nightmare.
I would sure like to know what this excellent support system is Last week
he had an issue and asked me to call them and see what the deal was but I
didn't have the ticket # and their excellent support system couldn't even
look it up by the customer account and after making it quite clear to me in a
very unprofessional manner that I couldn't expect them to and I told him that
HMS has no such problems and it is a rather easy thing for them to do and the
idiot hung up on me... nice service. So 5 hours later when his plane landed and
he got to his hotel and got into his email and got me the ticket # and another
45 minutes on the phone with another idiot and a $150 charge to his account
they were actually able to restart the server. Great service, I wish I had
them

To this end they have a very feature-rich, constantly evolving control
panel, one that allows me to perform many tasks that I might otherwise have
to submit a request for.
I have been in that panel and its ok but still not as nice as others.

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about... one of the fundamental
aspects of CrystalTech (and many other hosts) is that YOU run your business.
They do everything they can to ensure that your customers are NOT aware that
you're hosting at CrystalTech. They're customer control centers are
generically branded as all customer-facing services - they abstract
themselves out of the picture as a feature.

LOL, you don't know what I am talking about?
Ok so lets say you get on a plane to hawaii and soon as you board the plane
your server goes down, well guess what.. its down for for quite a long time
before you have any idea and so your customers sites are down as well and
nothing can be done until you land and someone tells you which could be 12
hours later. Now that might be ok for you Jim, but its not ok for me!

I make it a HUGE deal to my customers to let them know who and where is hosting
their site and I make sure they have all the info they need in case they can't
find me but can call the host to get something fixed. Personally, I want them
them to know WTF is going on with their site and have abilities to get things
fixed if something goes wrong and I can't be contacted. After all, it is THEIR
web site and they are paying the bills. IMO, there is absolutely no reason in
the world to not add that extra layer of protection. To me the way you do it is
just another way for you to make money off of your clients, while that is good
for you it's not so good for customers. I pay the extra money and pocket less
out of the hosting to ensure things are going right. Now you might not have had
any problems or maybe you have, i dunno but we just don't agree on biz models.

and criticizing them for it seems silly.
So for example last week derricks server goes down and since its at ct he cant
get it restarted and it takes them several hours to get it back up and going,
thats just damn silly aint it Jim. Not to mention all the damn hoops we had to
jump through just to verify the account, now maybe it is just me but it
shouldnt matter who the hell calls it in, if the damn server is down then get
it back on, which was something that their techs just couldnt understand.

But problem is that when people on here ask for hosting opinions they dont
usually ask if the plans are managed or unmanaged.

I know you love CT but I have yet to have a good experience with them, I havent
dealt with them a lot but the 30 or so times I have were nightmarish.

I can only relay my personal experience... and my personal experience has been
excellent.

And I will respect that Jim.
And I can only relay my personal experience and that of approx 15 other ppl
that I know who have used them and have had detailed conversations with me
about them. And a lot of those were customers of their and everyone of them
have thanked me time after time for taking them to HMS.
And my personally experience with has been nothing less than pathetic.

I have a dedicated server at CrystalTech and I think they've been fantastic.
No they're not going to hold your hand and teach you everything you need to
know about managing DNS and IIS but you're supposed to be grown up enough to
RTFM on your own. I've only ever had a few issues, they were quickly and
professionally addressed, and I like very much having full control over my own
first class webserver. CrystalTech rocks.

There is no holy grail of hosting.

With that said, you might want to look at Sozo. They are still on CF 7. I
donno about cfobject either, you can ask.

My limited experience with tech support was good. Pretty snappy.
The good:
Unlimited domains (I think) for $20
H-sphere control panel. IMO based on years of expereince and RD is the best
hosting CP I have worked with. It is as close to a dedicated box or VPS as
you can get in a shared hosting environment.
You have control over:
file extensions
FTP
DNS (full control - very nice)
user accounts
Databases - Mysql and MSSQL Access
Sub domains
etc
Fast pipe

And if you want to do resellers hosting Hsphere is definitely the way to go.

The bad:
IT doesn't do CF DSN's on the fly - you have to wait untill they set it up.
That never took more than an hour or so.

No experience with mission critical - shit hitting the fan - type
situation's- So no opinion there.

Best of luck

Re: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-16 Thread Dave l
Well thank god Jim that I won't have to much longer!
He's had it with them and is moving over to my xserve at hms.

I think their charge of $950 to make a virtual mapping was the last straw,
which btw~ they couldn't even do right after trying for 3 days(pathetic). I
actually had him call up HMS and they walked him through how to do it himself
in 3 minutes and he wasn't even their customer.

Some people just expect better better things

I wasn't saying you were incorrect just asking about things you mentioned as I
have surely never seen the good aspects of them. Or when some asks about
hosting and you go off on how cheap CT is compared to HMS and then the person
thinks thats that wow they are this much cheaper but what they don't
understand is that one is a managed server and one is not. Now if you had
actually thought about that you'd realize that if someone is asking about
hosting on here then chances are pretty damn good that they aren't qualified to
be running a server themselves. And so when you tell them how cheap your server
is and if they go get it then find themselves completely f*cked when they have
signed a contract for the server but cant run it and then have to pay huge
amounts of $$ to ct to get help which in the end costs them tons more.

And your lil quote below is exactly how you are as well

Well then they don't Dave. As we've come to expect all other opinions are
incorrect because you're experience differs.

Re: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-16 Thread Dave l
I'm not trying to win jerry, just showing that myself along with lots of
other people on here have had issues with them above and beyond what would be
acceptable.
The only people I have seen who speak up for ct are on their own boxes, you
don't see many people on their shared servers speak up at all.

And when people come on and ask for cheap hosting and people come on and give
recommendations of cheap servers but don't give any info on that fact that yes
they are cheap but they also don't include any support and really anyone who is
looking for cheap hosting probably will need all the support that they can get
in which case a cheap server really isn't in there best interest. you can get a
plain jane cheap unmanaged server anywere, it's the support when you need it
that in my book is where I prefer to be covered. Or like I said before... if i
cant be reached and there is a problem I want my customers to know they are
covered.

Now would you host with someone would tell you that they are running mysql
server 2000 and not just once as in a oopsy but as in several times, even
after informing them that no such product exists and all that after waiting
over 45 minutes on hold to talk to them? Not too mention most of the actual
coldfusion team will not host there, too me that says something.

While what Jim does is great for him I don't think it would be good for someone
who needs hand holding on a server. Obviously, he can recommend whatever he
wants but he should also add the facts to it because most people will assume
that ct's ded boxes are comparable to hms ded boxes and they aren't, one
includes support one doesn't but the average person asking doesn't know that.
And personally, if i took jims recommendation and went to ct and signed a
contract and then found out I had no support I would be pissed as hell at jim.

So if by losing you mean that if someone reads this and has a boner over a
$120 a month dedicated box (which I would also assume jim has a cfm license for
which isnt included in that cost) and it helps keep them from getting into a
major mess, then I am fine with that. I would rather have the facts out there
to help them out see how has the cheapest server... and after all.. you get
what what you pay for.

Dave, as a fairly impartial observer, talking general professional and
personal respect, you aren't going to win this one against Jim, I
don't think.

Lol!

Actually they don't, one of my partners still has a dedicated box there
and I have to deal with them all the time and they are a complete nightmare.
I would sure like to know what this excellent support system is Last
week he had an issue and asked me to call them and see what the deal was but
I didn't have the ticket # and their excellent support system couldn't
even look it up by the customer account and after making it quite clear to
me in a very unprofessional manner that I couldn't expect them to and I told
him that HMS has no such problems and it is a rather easy thing for them to
do and the idiot hung up on me... nice service. So 5 hours later when his
plane landed and he got to his hotel and got into his email and got me the
ticket # and another 45 minutes on the phone with another idiot and a $150
charge to his account they were actually able to restart the server. Great
service, I wish I had them

Actually, it sounds like you may have gotten back what you gave. What
constructive purpose does it serve to start throwing some other hosting
company's name around, and saying, Well... so-and-so doesn't have a problem
with yadda-yadda-yadda.

After having been in the support center service myself in the past
(thankfully no longer), I've come to realize that I don't get much of
anywhere if I act like an asshole on the phone.

I've had none of these bad experiences with CT tech support. Never had
problems with ticket numbers either. Can't say as I ever had to have one. If
I did, then to the best of my knowledge, the guy on the phone opened the
ticket for me, handled the call and was done with it.

I still say +1 for CrystalTech, but as is obvious with pretty much
*anything* YMMV. ;o)

Chris

To this end they have a very feature-rich, constantly evolving control
panel, one that allows me to perform many tasks that I might otherwise
 have
 to submit a request for.
I have been in that panel and its ok but still not as nice as others.

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about... one of the
 fundamental
aspects of CrystalTech (and many other hosts) is that YOU run your
 business.
They do everything they can to ensure that your customers are NOT aware
 that
you're hosting at CrystalTech. They're customer control centers are
generically branded as all customer-facing services - they abstract
themselves out of the picture as a feature.

LOL, you don't know what I am talking about?
Ok so lets say you get on a plane to hawaii and soon as you board the
plane your server goes down, well guess what.. its down for for quite a long
time before you have any idea and so your customers sites are down as well
and nothing can be done until you land and someone tells you which could be
12 hours later. Now that might be ok for you Jim, but its not ok for me!

I make it a HUGE deal to my customers to let them know who and where is
hosting their site and I make sure they have all the info they need in case
they can't find me but can call the host to get something fixed. Personally,
I want them them to know WTF is going on with their site and have abilities
to get things fixed if something goes wrong and I can't be contacted. After
all, it is THEIR web site and they are paying the bills. IMO, there is
absolutely no reason in the world to not add that extra layer of protection.
To me the way you do it is just another way for you to make money off of
your clients, while that is good for you it's not so good for customers. I
pay the extra money and pocket less out of the hosting to ensure things are
going right. Now you might not have had any problems or maybe you have, i
dunno but we just don't agree on biz models.

and criticizing them for it seems silly.
So for example last week derricks server goes down and since its at ct he
cant get it restarted and it takes them several hours to get it back up and
going, thats just damn silly aint it Jim. Not to mention all the damn hoops
we had to jump through just to verify the account, now maybe it is just me
but it shouldnt matter who the hell calls it in, if the damn server is down
then get it back on, which was something that their techs just couldnt
 understand.

But problem is that when people on here ask for hosting opinions they dont
usually ask if the plans are managed or unmanaged.

I know you love CT but I have yet to have a good experience with them, I
havent dealt with them a lot but the 30 or so times I have were nightmarish.

I can only relay my personal experience... and my personal experience has
 been excellent.

And I will respect that Jim.
And I can only relay my personal experience and that of approx 15 other
ppl that I know who have used them and have had detailed

you don't see many people on their shared servers speak up at all.

I'm on a shared server, and I love 'em. Sorry Dave.

And when people come on and ask for cheap hosting...

Remember that the original poster *asked about CrystalTech specifically*.
His post, also indicated (to me at least) that he'd done some research
already on his own and kept coming up with CrystalTech.

and people come on and give recommendations of cheap servers but don't
give any info on that fact that yes they are cheap but they also don't
include any support and really anyone who is looking for cheap hosting
probably will need all the support that they can get in which case a cheap
server really isn't in there best interest. you can get a plain jane cheap
unmanaged server anywere, it's the support when you need it that in my book
is where I prefer to be covered.

Well, that' your book. The original poster said *nothing* about support in
his criteria for his own personal holy grail of hosting. I (again this
could just be me) take that to mean that William is a big boy and can take
care of his own support.

He also *specifically* mentioned that he wanted shared hosting. So all this
talk about unmanaged, dedicated boxes is not really what he was looking for,
right?

Or like I said before... if i cant be reached and there is a problem I want
my customers to know they are covered.

again, not one of the original poster's concerns. He listed his concerns
very clearly. This wasn't one of them.

Now would you host with someone would tell you that they are running mysql
server 2000 and not just once as in a oopsy but as in several times, even
after informing them that no such product exists and all that after waiting
over 45 minutes on hold to talk to them?

So, you've never misspoken before? Wow, you're really super critical. Did
you also correct the reps. grammar while you were at it?

Not too mention most of the actual coldfusion team will not host there, too
 me that says something.

What do you mean by that? Who is the actual coldfusion team. I'm assuming
this an eat-your-own-dog-food thing... what's your source?

While what Jim does is great for him I don't think it would be good for
someone who needs hand holding on a server.

What makes you judge the original poster in this way? At what point did you
decide that he needed his hand held? His list of what he was looking for in
a hosting company was, again, very clear... and hand holding was not
mentioned. Sounds to me like the guy knows how to take care of himself.

Obviously, he can recommend whatever he wants but he should also add the
facts to it because most people will assume that ct's ded boxes are
comparable to hms ded boxes and they aren't, one includes support one
doesn't but the average person asking doesn't know that. And personally, if
i took jims recommendation and went to ct and signed a contract and then
found out I had no support I would be pissed as hell at jim.

If you took one person's suggestion without doing anymore homework, or if
you asked for suggestions on a host and support was *really* important to
you, but you failed to mention that, then I'd say you were the fool and
should be pissed at yourself for not doing more homework. Do you like,
*work* for HMS?

Also, Jim never once in any of this compared Crystal Tech to HMS. You did
that.

So if by losing you mean that if someone reads this and has a boner over
a $120 a month dedicated box (which I would also assume jim has a cfm
license for which isnt included in that cost) and it helps keep them from
getting into a major mess, then I am fine with that. I would rather have the
facts out there to help them out see how has the cheapest server... and
after all.. you get what what you pay for.

You keep talking about 'facts', but you're only using anecdotal evidence
(which is what we are all doing), but when someone else's experience differs
from yours you dismiss what they said as 'non-fact', and instead substitute
your own anecdotal evidence as fact. Which is exactly what Jim was getting
at when he said, As we've come to expect all other opinions are incorrect
because you're experience differs.

I'm afraid that's how you're coming across even if you don't mean to.

Also, there's nothing to win in this. We should all just grow-up a bit.

*steps off soapbox*

Chris

RE: SOT: Holy Grail? Hosting?

2008-02-16 Thread William Seiter
It isn't a 'lack' of evening and weekend support, it is that the Senior tech
(who knows about the Coldfusion thingy) is off nights and weekends.
According to the tech I spoke to, if the server goes offline on a weekend
(and cf won't restart) they call him at home and have it fixed within the
hour... sozohosting.com

Now, assuming that you cannot judge an entire company by the words spoken in
just a few minutes on the phone (especially a tech guy), I am willing to
assume that they either... had a turnover, this guy hasn't been trained on
CF yet, or he was talking out of the side of his arse.

The website if very specific that they 'allow' cffile and cfdirectory to be
run, so by contract I am assuming that they don't allow cfobject,
createObject and the others that can be explicitly restricted in the admin
settings. Or, at least I will assume that until (and if) I speak to their
senior tech next week.

I am realizing 2 things now.
1. The group of people here on this list would probably be a great group of
guys to get together in a room during the 'Big Smoke' in Las Vegas and just
shoot the 'breeze' with.

2. There are some questions, asked on this list, that have the same effect
as 2 Master Masons discussing ritual. Lots of opinions, experiences and
argument, but no 1 best method.

There is no holy grail of hosting.

With that said, you might want to look at Sozo. They are still on CF
 7.
  I
donno about cfobject either, you can ask.

My limited experience with tech support was good. Pretty snappy.
   The good:
Unlimited domains (I think) for $20
H-sphere control panel. IMO based on years of expereince and RD is
 the
   best
hosting CP I have worked with. It is as close to a dedicated box or
 VPS
  as
you can get in a shared hosting environment.
   You have control over:
   file extensions
   FTP
DNS (full control - very nice)
   user accounts
Databases - Mysql and MSSQL Access
   Sub domains

   Fast pipe

And if you want to do resellers hosting Hsphere is definitely the way
 to
   go.

That never took more than an hour or so.

I was wondering if anyone here has had any good or bad experiences with this
company so that I don't take the wrong road.

My criteria for 'Holy Grail' is: Inexpensive (always important), Multiple
domain names can be served from same hosting and appear to be unique, allows
access to cfobject and other CFC tags, preferably CF8.

In my research the most often come across issue was the multiple domains to

I've been using them for about 7 years. Never a blip, never a problem.

I forget they are even there.

Even the price is so low on my monthly bank statement, I go months
without thinking about them much at all.

Which is just what I want in a host. It just works.

If you want crap support with crap answers to basic CF questions, go for CT.
They're perfect! If you want folks settin' up mappings that screw up your

If you want real CF guys backin' you up, go with HostMySite. It's like night

Unfortunately Will, the $130+/month for VPS is not covered by my criteria of
'inexpensive'. I actually had a long conversation with them and their
shared was ideal until they confirmed that I would need create a separate
hosting account for each of the websites I wanted to move over. I heard a
lot of great stuff about HMS.

When I called I spoke to a tech support person. When I asked about the CF
settings he was helpful and logged into the admin while I was waiting to
confirm the information he had given me (without being asked). Is it
possible that they have 'good' techs and 'bad' techs. (and a few Dorothys as
well ('why, I'm nota a tech at all...')).

Speaking of CrystalTech - you can get an actual dedicated server (not a VPS)
for $90 a month (even cheaper for Linux).

I've had one for years: I host something like 20 sites and have complete

I've actually never had a serious problem with CT and CF, but clearly others

It's technically possible but there's a lot of technical limitations that

sure you can get a cheap server there and get 0 support. And when you do need
support (talking about crystal tech) they will ream the crap out of you in
charges.

The bottom line is that if you want or are gunna be cheap then you will not be
getting the holy grail, you will simply be getting cheap hosting.

HMS techs are good but some are also new and of course they won't know
everything yet and well that's part of your cheap hosting. CT techs are
complete morons, havent talked to one yet who knew anything about anything.

Now if you start paying for better hosting everything gets better, for example
on my dedicated box at HMS I have a direct line # to the dedicated team and if
none are there it gets picked up by the highest level tech there and it gets
taken care of on the spot.

Of course I pay for this but to me it's worth it. For ex: if one of my
customers needs help they can call anytime and get helped by HMS, Now say one
of jims clients has problems and cant contact jim and hes on a $90 ded box at
CT then that client is Sh*T Outta Luck! If thats not a concern for you then
don't pay for the support. But myself when I got 60 something clients on a box
and 20+ more on the way, I want to know that they will be taken care of, I
don't care what the cost is.

The other option is to buy a server and send it in for co-lo. I just sent in an
apple xserve to HMS and it will cost me less that $150 a month to be managed
and for support. And im sure you could get a server fairly cheap.

Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere but HMS, they are far and away the best host
I have ever dealt with.

Jim brings up a very good point and that is that cfm wasn't made for shared
hosting and that really is IMO its only real drawback. If you got any of Wills
sites on your server then it's gunna be crashing like crazy!! haha jk

That has been my experience with them in the past as well. HMS definitely seems
to be better in this respect (although when my software customers go to them
before me about any issues they are having, they often get some really wacky
responses. It always depends on who you get when it comes to good tech
support.)

The bottom line is that if you want or are gunna be cheap then you

Very true. I will say that I was in the same position and decided that I really
need to go with a VPS for better reliability, and have been pretty happy with
AHPHosting.net. They give $10/month off their plans for my customers (or using
the coupon posted on this site) and while their have been some bumps recently,
the guy that runs it works tirelessly to keep servers up and problems fixed.
I've been very impressed with the service and options for the price. I host a
handful of other sites for friends and family that don't have any full server
access to the VPS and helps alleviate the extra cost.

Viviotech.com is another option for real low-cost VPS hosting. Their Linux VPS
with BlueDragon is pretty much the cheapest semi-dedicated option for CFML
hosting you'll find. I had some problems when I tried them with downtime from
power outages, but supposedly they have been getting up with some generators
recently, so less of an issue.

All I can say is that my experience has been completely the opposite. I've
hosted with them for over 9 years now and have seen no reason to switch.

I get quality, feature-rich hosting with liberal bandwidth and storage space
limits. Hosting that also happens to be cheap.

I find them very communicative (one of my biggest complaints about most
hosts) and feature-rich. I'm not sure if I would recommend an amateur host
with them as they do lean towards self-service as much as possible (one of
the reasons, I suspect, that they can keep such low prices). They have an
excellent customer knowledgebase and support information and support ticket
system but would clearly rather limit human interaction to a minimum.

To this end they have a very feature-rich, constantly evolving control
panel, one that allows me to perform many tasks that I might otherwise have
to submit a request for.

Of course I pay for this but to me it's worth it. For ex: if one of my

The whole idea is that you can tailor your service to your clients. Your
clients don't call Crystal Tech - they call YOU and, if you need to, you
call CrystalTech. You determine the level and quality of service - all CT
provides is the iron and pipe.

That's not a business model that everybody wants but it is their business
model. They stick to it. If that's not what you want then CT is clearly
not even an option... and criticizing them for it seems silly. It's like
complaining that your local muffler shop doesn't do body work... that's just
not a business they support.

I can only relay my personal experience... and my personal experience has
been excellent.
