Stus-List 35 mk2 propane locker photos

2020-03-25 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Recently, someone asked me for photos of my propane lockers on Callisto.
Sorry, but I'm too tired to search for that email after spending a few
hours crawling under the cockpit sole cleaning and inspecting...

I thought they might be original, but they are most likely custom. In any
case, they have been extended to hold a taller 10lb tank, and the port
locker has a box epoxied to the back to hold the regulator, solenoid, and a
manual valve for a BBQ. I might try to remove the stbd locker to have a
closer look at it (since it collects water somehow), but the port one
cannot be removed without detaching the regulator box, which would destroy
it.

Anyway, I posted some photos on my FB page here, along with photos of the
steering gear.

A friend of mine in Florida told me 2 days ago that snowbirds and others
attempting to sail north up the east coast were running into problems because
of all the marinas that were refusing transients dockage. Doesn't seem right.
They didn't close all the hotels and motels on the motorways.

Carolyn Machamer, a cell biologist who specializes in coronaviruses, discusses
the latest research on the virus that causes COVID-19

By Samuel Volkin / Published March 20

According to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine,
SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can live in the air and on surfaces
between several hours and several days. The study found that the virus is
viable for up to 72 hours on plastics, 48 hours on stainless steel, 24 hours on
cardboard, and 4 hours on copper. It is also detectable in the air for three
hours.

Carolyn Machamer, a professor of cell biology whose lab at the Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine has studied the basic biology of coronaviruses for years,
joined Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA candidate Samuel Volkin for a brief discussion of
these findings and what they mean for efforts to protect against spread of the
virus. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Volkin: According to this report, it sounds like the COVID-19 virus is
potentially living on surfaces for days. How worried should we be about our
risk of becoming infected simply by touching something an infected person was
in contact with days ago?

Machamer: What's getting a lot of press and is presented out of context is that
the virus can last on plastic for 72 hours—which sounds really scary. But
what's more important is the amount of the virus that remains. It's less than
0.1% of the starting virus material. Infection is theoretically possible but
unlikely at the levels remaining after a few days. People need to know this.

marginally operable; I took them out (mast down) and used a very fine emery

was physically wrong with them, after cleaning they work great; my guess is
that is was an accumulation of salt and other gunk in there;

Tim, I don’t have any drawings but I own a 78 36-1. I took my sheaves off
about 10 years ago and if I remember correctly a single pin is used for both
sheaves. If you can put a piece of wire or twine around the sheave to hold it
in place you can safely remove the pin and pull the sheaves out. I can’t
remember if mine had bronze inserts or not but I’ll be finding out soon as mine
are starting to make noise also. It is very likely that the sheaves will need
to be replaced at this point in the boat’s life.

Re: Stus-List Covid 19 update MD & USVI

2020-03-25 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
So if we are going to be accurate:

SARS-COV-2 is an RNA virus that causes Covid 19 and the test uses the RNA from
the virus to test for its presence. It is very unlikely that there would be
any RNA around if it is not coming from virus. It is possible you might find
naked RNA without the rest of the virus, but unlikely, and that is the same for
all Covid-19 tests. When a patient tests positive, it means they are finding
RNA in the sample, not virus. There is presently no test for “live virus” as
there is no such thing as a living virus and no test for functional virus
except to infect cells in culture in a laboratory. Dave

Re: Stus-List List Now Fuel Spill

2020-03-25 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
I overfilled my boat's tank once when we ran it for the first time and the fuel
gage was broken. It wasn't much but the rainbow was on the water before I
could stop it. I since replaced the gage.

I never fill my boat's fuel tank unless I am taking a long trip. Don't want
all that weight onboard or the fuel going stale. I've heard stories of racers
calculating the commute to a race and measuring the fuel for a regatta.

I bought my boat with an unknown amount of fuel and calculated the fuel to be
over five years old. I ran the level down that season and then pumped the last
10 gallons into jerry cans I gave to a friend for his home furnace. I since
buy diesel at a busy truckstop (fresh) and fill one or two jerry cans when I
want to add fuel. I know this may incite the anger of condensation gurus but I
check my water separator and do not find any issues with water. It seems more
likely that water and sediment can be in fuel that comes from marina fuel tanks
sitting for long periods of time and are located below the water table.

BTW, my aluminum tank started leaking last year and I am replacing with a
larger, plastic tank. I will probably need to keep more fuel in that, to keep
the level up, but I don't intend to fill it unless we plan a long trip. After
hearing that others can see the level in a plastic tank, I am encouraged to
visually check the level when filling and never overfill. Thanks.

Re: Stus-List Now fuel fill

2020-03-25 Thread David Risch via CnC-List
I have the whistler...works great with fuel dock pumps. But with my
"ginormous" 20 gal. tankage I jerry fill often. The whistle needs air and the
jerry flow does not provide.

I may do the T off the vent or make my own no-spill. Found the parts from a
description from another DIYer elsewhere.

I have been looking after seeing all this Dave, and it looks like the suction

Also, there is a whistler,

and a gurgler,

the guy with the gurgler sez get the whistler, and the whistler owners are not
all that impressed.
I think you probably just need to get familiar with them.

We have a container that looks like a rectangular bottle which suction mounts
to the side of the boat over the vent. It catches little dribbles if one is not
too attentive to the gurgle. After tidying up, you remove he screw cap and put
the dribbles into the fill. Works pretty well. It is required for filling at
our club fuel dock.

Stus-List Covid 19 - 14 day quarantine

2020-03-25 Thread Stu via CnC-List
I crossed back into Canada yesterday and am now under mandatory 14 day
quarantine. No contact with any other person. I was told I could not stop and
get gas, groceries or booze on the way home. Thank God the kids came over and
stocked my fridge.

If my quarantine helps stop the spread of the virus, I’ll be happy to stay home.

That is not the only absurd aspect of the response to Covid 19. You can’t
access your boat nor can I go into my University office, which in both cases
there is no contact with other people. But I can go to the hardware store or
grocery store where you can’t help but encounter other people. That is the
situation in CT, anyway. Not logical or based on any science. Dave

2020-03-25 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
The good news is my marina isn't exactly secure, so it isn't like I won't be
able to get there anyway.
Between this and barring access to second homes, I have some issues with a
constructive taking of property. I get not infecting people, but I don't get
within 50 feet of any other person at the marina.
Also, if my boat is damaged due to lack of maintenance in some way, who is on
the hook for that?
Does the marina still expect to get paid?

Re: Stus-List Tank

2020-03-25 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
Matt,

I got rid of my perfectly good steel tank just being proactive.

I like the plastic, because I know it won't corrode, and I can see the fuel
level.

Having said that, if you have a cylindrical SS tank, you have the ideal
configuration. Even tho I have made rectangular SS tanks for others a long
time ago, I obviously didn't want that for myself. But, a cylindrical shape
is perfect, because there won't be the joints and flexing (metal fatigue)
you have with a rectangular tank. I would have no problem using one like
that. Only downside is you lose a lot of capacity.. Probably why it is only
20 gallons, instead of 30 or 40, which is what a boat you size should have.

My current boat has two rectangular fabricated SS water tanks, and one shit
the bed with the PO, and he put a Bladder in it. Was not happy to discover
this.

does not appear to be anything wrong with the tank, so my evil plan is to
simply clean it out and put it back when the core repair is finished.
Should I be thinking about replacing it with a plastic tank? If so, what's

Stus-List Tank tank

2020-03-25 Thread Matt Wolford via CnC-List
Listers:

All this tank talk provides an opportunity to ask a question. I currently
have my stainless steel, cylindrical 20-gallon tank sitting on the deck
(under cover) while I repair wet core underneath its normal location. There
does not appear to be anything wrong with the tank, so my evil plan is to
simply clean it out and put it back when the core repair is finished.
Should I be thinking about replacing it with a plastic tank? If so, what's
the benefit of plastic tanks over stainless tanks, and who makes good
plastic tanks for this purpose?

Thanks as always.

All this tank talk makes me feel good, since my 40 year old aluminum tank
started oozing fuel a couple years ago - I replaced it with a plastic tank.
I can now just look at the tank and see the fuel level. Ducked that problem
- and the gauge on the new tank isn't that accurate.

All the marinas in Kent County Maryland (Rock Hall, Tolchester, Worton Creek,
etc.) are closed for boat owners. The county instruction allow them to staff
with their own people if the maintain “social distancing”. So in at least some
cases you can’t work on your own boat but can pay them to do work.

USVI is closed to visitors too.

Tracking your fuel consumption and fuel available is really a fairly
important safety measure. I filled my tank and ran my boats for 12 hours at
cruising speed and then filled up again. It was pretty easy to figure fuel
consumption in gallon/ hour and get a good idea of my range under power. I
know that if I run at lower rpms I can go longer and if I run faster my fuel
will give out sooner. I also have a good idea of the capacity of my tank
because with 5 extra gallons handy I've run the tank dry. Bleeding the
engine is easy and a handy skill to possess.

One of the few ways a Swan is better than a Baltic is that they have a tube
and a calibrated dipstick for water and fuel tanks so up you can get a good
handle on your remaining fuel. I plan to install a way to dip my tank on
Masquerade soon. Another great way to monitor tank level is to have a sight
tube; basically you have an elbow coming out the bottom of the tank and
another at the top directly above and connect them with a clear or
translucent hose. Simple and elegant.

The only fuel gauges I've seen that consistently work are the ones where you
pump them up at the gauge and take a reading. I think it's called a Tank
Tender.

Good luck

At some point in the past, a past owner moved the Fuel Tank vent from the
outside of the hull to the inside of the Propane Locker, which is right next to
the fuel fill on our 37 XL. The reason was to make it impossible for the fuel
vent to draw water into the fuel tank with the rail under. This new location
is very helpful when filling the tank as it is easy to listen to for the change
in sound when filling. Even if it spits out a wee bit of fuel, it is easy to
clean up as it is contained within the propane locker so can be cleaned up
quickly before it goes out the propane locker drain.

Tracking your fuel consumption and fuel available is really a fairly important
safety measure. I filled my tank and ran my boats for 12 hours at cruising
speed and then filled up again. It was pretty easy to figure fuel consumption
in gallon/ hour and get a good idea of my range under power. I know that if I
run at lower rpms I can go longer and if I run faster my fuel will give out
sooner. I also have a good idea of the capacity of my tank because with 5 extra
gallons handy I’ve run the tank dry. Bleeding the engine is easy and a handy
skill to possess.
One of the few ways a Swan is better than a Baltic is that they have a tube and
a calibrated dipstick for water and fuel tanks so up you can get a good handle
on your remaining fuel. I plan to install a way to dip my tank on Masquerade
soon. Another great way to monitor tank level is to have a sight tube;
basically you have an elbow coming out the bottom of the tank and another at
the top directly above and connect them with a clear or translucent hose.
Simple and elegant.
The only fuel gauges I’ve seen that consistently work are the ones where you
pump them up at the gauge and take a reading. I think it’s called a Tank Tender.
Good luck

Re: Stus-List Fuel tracker app

2020-03-25 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
At some point in the past, a past owner moved the Fuel Tank vent from the
outside of the hull to the inside of the Propane Locker, which is
right next to the fuel fill on our 37 XL. The reason was to make it
impossible for the fuel vent to draw water into the fuel tank with the rail
under. This new location is very helpful when filling the tank as it is
easy to listen to for the change in sound when filling. Even if it spits
out a wee bit of fuel, it is easy to clean up as it is contained within
the propane locker so can be cleaned up quickly before it goes out the
propane locker drain.

Use that method...but more often than I like I dribble fuel. Need a better and
cleaner method. Have a whistle for dockside high capacity, but may install a T
at vent line high boat with an over flow bottle for jerry fills. Anyone try
this?

When I top up fuel I listen with my ear close to the fill and when I hear the
gurgle change pitch I stop filling. You can get an idea of what I’m talking
about by getting an empty wine bottle—something we all have kicking around
these days—and listening as you fill it from the tap. When it’s just about full
the noise of water gets higher. Doing this I never had fuel come out my vent on
my 40.
An important note, empty the water out of the wine bottle when you’re finished
the experiment so you don’t accidentally consume the stuff. Fish s*** in it!
