I switched mine to a plastic tank by Moeller Marine 8 years ago. It was pretty
much a perfect fit. It’s great to be able to visually see how much fuel you
have left without relying on the gauge.

I went through 2 steel diesel tanks before switching to plastic. I wanted a
translucent plastic but ended up with black plastic.

Doing it again, my choice would be either Monel or translucent plastic.

+ for Genco also.
Did everything remotely ( I am in Montreal ), I took measurements ( they
already knew 27's ), sent me a few samples for Sunbrella. The Bimini had
Strataglass window, the base that bolts to the toe rail has leather so not to
scratch the anodizing ( had the choice toe rail or pulpit ). Dodger is perfect
( they call it the Natty Dodger ) with handles again on leather base, have had
them for 8 years .

I installed an ultrasonic anemometer on Maggie about 4/5 years ago. It’s been

Bill,

The zeus actually has a NMEA 0183 input. It's not about using the 0183 signal
so much as it is about generally upgrading the entire system and ensuring
accuracy and reliability of the sensors. The ultrasonic wind instruments are
already n2k and are naturally bird proof. Some articles have stated that the
ultrasonic anemometers are not fast enough responding. Conversely they are not
susceptible to the effects of heeling.

Definitely keep me posted about your experience with the electromagnetic water
speed!

Re: Stus-List Crack at hull support below the chainplate

2017-08-13 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
Is this a 30 MK1? If yes, on this boat the chain plate is attached to the
"knee" and the knee is heavily glassed to the hull. What you see on the bottom
is just a shelf which goes around the knee and doesn't provide any significant
structural support. The knee continues though the shelf and ends few inches
under. You can't see this on the port side due to the wood paneling (I have
built a removable door on mine so I can inspect it) but you should be able to
see it on the starboard side if you remove the cushions. When the knee starts
to separate from the hull, it usually starts from the bottom where glasses mats
overlap which you should be able to see...

Re: Stus-List 1980 C 30 headliner removal + the notorious C smile

2017-07-17 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
I agree with Gary. I have replaced all of my grab rails initially and just
re-bedded them this past April. No need to remove the liner at all... For other
hardware, I have appropriate sized holes in the liner which are covered with
stainless plugs...

I have never even considered removing the headliner on my 1980 30-1. The grab
rails are attached on the lower side of the headliner, so you don't have to
remove it. I have been able to get at everything else with fish tapes from the
little panels.

On the smile, we all have one. If the bolts look good and there are no leaks,
and if you are concerned, then grind it out and put a band of cloth around it,
fill and fair it and it should be OK. Mine has just been filled a few times,
and I make sure it is fresh each year. Sometimes it is a bit larger, sometimes
it lasts without re-cracking. If I get ambitious, I would do the band approach,
but after 24 years, I am not concerned. No water and no corrosion.

Good luck.

Curious how involved removing the cabin headliner is on a 1980 C MK1 would
like to get access to replace/re-bed a bunch of things including the grab rails.

Also, a common question I’m sure that gets asked a lot with C, but is it
typical for most of this vintage to have the C “smile” at the keel? Obviously
a good grounding would cause it. I’ve checked the keel bolts and they look good
and clean with no signs of stress from inside the bilge, and no water. Will be
hauling out soon for a closer look owner says it has the “usual smile." I’ve
heard of owners who dropped the keel to check bolts for corrosion. I got rough
estimates for this at around 4k. Pretty expensive price tag for some piece of
mind.

Re: Stus-List Preventer or boom brake for C/1

2017-07-15 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
I have a DIY boom break. You just need a figure 8 climbing descender and a
heavy line (1/2" or more). Descender is attaches to where your vang is on the
boom and the line goes through the descender and attaches to two toe rails. In
case of a gybe your boom will very slowing move over. Much nicer than a
traditional preventer.

PS: I'm not sure about a "permanent" preventer though. I think it would be a
tripping hazard!

I'm looking for advice please. I've been thinking for a while about installing
permanent preventers or a boom brake on my 30. In the meantime I attach a
preventer, when I think it's required, to either the mainsheet eye or to the
vang attachment.

This week, as I was moving the preventer, we were overtaken by a rain squall
which resulted in a nasty gybe. Nobody was injured, but it scared me into
rethinking my preventer.

Our boom has 2 eyes: one at the end, where the mainsheet attaches and the other
about a third of the length from the mast, where the vang attaches. I'd like to
make a third attachment for a preventer or boom brake about half way along the
boom, but I don't know how to do it. A bale, I think, will not withstand the
lateral strain of a gybe. A friend recommended a T-ball fitting, but it also is
made to withstand strain from one direction only, I think.

Can anyone recommend a fitting that will attach to the boom and withstand the
strain of a forced gybe? Also is there collected wisdom about preventers vs
boom brakes, etc.?

Thanks

Hello!
I have an old trusty Raymarine S2G (150G) course computer sitting around that I
bought long ago to replace my Simrad WP30. The original plan was to install a
below deck drive mainly because of added security (backup steering system) but
I don't think it is worth the trouble since 30-1 doesn't have a lot of space
around the Edson quadrant so I'm thinking of just installing a wheel drive unit
instead (ST4000). The 150G manual doesn't mention the wheel drive units but I
don't see any reason why it wouldn't work since wheel drives pull a lot less
current that below the deck units. I will be installing the rudder reference
sensor. Any thoughts?

Hi All,

I need to replace the radar dome on my mizzenmast this weekend. It's about 22'
up. I'm in solid shape and can climb without a problem. However, I have never
climbed a mast before, and I have to do this work alone. I'm curious if anyone
here has suggestions for doing this safely. Is it possible, or should I call
in a professional?

I'll be down on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake, so I'm sure I could find
someone, but I'd rather learn to do this myself and I'd rather spend $$ on mast
climbing equipment than on a pro. I'm sure this won't be the last time I have
to do this.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Just received the results from the fall check-up and the local sail loft has
diagnosed Windstar's ('85 33-2) mainsail as "beyond expired". Cue the Monty
Python...

The current main has two sets of reef points, (cringle at the leech and and
ring-on-webbing-straps at the luff.)
No telltales other than streamers off the leech.
IIRC there may be a leech line.
4 partial battens battens.
There are two cringles at the clew, one above the other, and what I believe is
called a "shelf" of lighter weight cloth along the foot. Have never used this
out of ignorance, but perhaps I should.
it has a rope foot, slides on the luff.

I will have Rolly Tasker in Thailand quote, as well as UK sails here in Toronto.

I value the 33-2's performance but most of my sailing is recreational sailing
here on Lake Ontario. Would like to distance race but not looking to be
ultra-competitive at the top level. Don't want to buy another Main for
this boat in the next decade.

Any thoughts or recommendations on a replacement, or comments on sail lofts?
Many thanks!

Randy,

I had the same problem so I made them into two sections as it is common for
larger boats. It works well and easier to build. Also, A more reasonably priced
alternative to Teak is Sapele which is in the same family as mahogany. My two
forward shorter grab rails are actually Sapele and haven't had any issues with
them warping or checking at all...

Craftsmen in St. Petersburg, Fl." All Items Are Custom Order Please give us a

I've decided to fabricate my own, as one of my crew is extremely skilled at
woodworking and has all the necessary tools. I can get the necessary teak
stock for <$200.

The problem is getting a long-enough piece of teak. The rails on the boat are
117" long. The longest piece of teak I can get is 115". So I have to decide
between shortening the rails by two inches, or using an alternative wood. We'd
prefer not to do end-to-end joinery for this application.

Shortening the rails by an inch on each end probably isn't that big an issue.
It wouldn't appear to require changing the mounting screw locations. The main
issue is how noticeable it would be afterward.

I could get another oily close-grained hardwood species in a long-enough
length, e.g. Ipe, Cumaru, or Paduak. And it would be significantly less
expensive than teak.

So my question to you listers is, do you have any opinions on the merits or
demerits of using Ipe, Cumaru, or Paduak instead of teak for exterior handrails?

Hi Steven,

"I am pointing well, though wounder if I should pinch more or be more off
the wind for speed? I seemed to be passed on reaching and running"

I don't sail a 30 but for pretty much any boat the pinch vs speed question the
answer depends on the headsail you use, wind speed, chop, the shape of your
sails, etc.. For example, my 150% can back-wind the main pretty badly on the
higher end of its useful wind range compared to the 135 so it's a definite
trade-off on speed vs point when the wind pipes up unexpectedly with the 150%
up..

I'd say the best place to start is with your boat's polar graph. I made an
enlarged / highlighted version of mine that includes the best angles for wind
speeds listed out and that's plastic laminated / taped to my bulkhead. Unless
the winds are very slight I usually point 8-10 degrees true less than what the
polar graph says that seems to be the sweet spot for my setup. Except for the
150%, my sails are pretty much used-up so that might have something to do with
it.

Once you know the ballpark angle, the best way to tell is to compare your
pointing / boat speed with your competitors and keep a very close eye on the
windex / wind angle gauge, and even more importantly : The telltales on your
genoa. I beat my nemesis (A modified Beneteau First 29 with fresh carbon
sails) this Wednesday night by mostly out-pointing him and also because he
missed a nice lift :-)

As for the whole phrf thing ours is scored ToD and it seems to work fairly
well..

Some boats seem to have a bit of an edge When we do everything right it seems
we can beat pretty much anybody in our current class, even the Yoda on his
Pearson 29 with a phrf of 213.. We have to finish a country mile ahead of him
with our 105 phrf but it's do-able :-)

It looks better, certainly less menacing than before, but I would work it to a
mirror shine. The crack can be hard to see with the scratch lines but very
easy to see when it is mirror smooth. At least get a swirl pattern or lines
that run perpendicular to the "crack". You're so much closer to a satisfactory
answer it only makes sense to get it that little extra bit. You are wet
sanding right?

So I polished the rusty area on my forestay fitting and it seems like a surface
corrosion as suggested. There are some blemishes but nothing like how it looked
before:

I also performed a dye test. Here is a picture with dye applied:

Here is after developer is applied:

I barely see a dotted line but it seems to be consistent with the blemishes on
the surface...

Any thoughts?

Google "dye penetrant crack" and go to images. There are many examples of
actual cracks revealed by dye checks.

The polished chain plate did not show evidence of a serious crack.

I would try to sand/polish the plate clean and smooth before moving forward.
Work from 200 grit all the way up to 1000 or 2000 and then hand polish. You'll
be amazed at how much more you can tell about the area of concern. It could
just be a place where a steel cable deposited iron in the metal and that is
what is rusting. You see the same thing happen on SS cabels where they've been
cut or swaged.

As for machine shops I'm sure there is one closer to you in Annapolis but I
have a guy around the corner from me. I use him all the time. Does complete
one off design and repair. Harry Langley at "The Machine Shop" in Lusby MD.

Your friend should confirm with the broker the location of the boat so there is

Hey guys,

After some research and having the helpful folks at Genco Marine look at photos
of my boat, I've come to the conclusion that it's nearly impossible to shade my
cockpit while under sail unless I move my traveler. I have a 1976 30mki with a
single back stay and a tiller. The traveler is currently located at the back
of the cockpit.

Before anyone yells "Buy a hat!" or "Wear sunscreen!"... These are all
fantastic suggestions, but I'm beyond that. A shaded cockpit is essential to
keeping the women in my life happy sailors. When they are happy sailors, I get
to sail. When they are not, I don't get to sail. Simple as that. So, I need
advice on moving my traveler so I can install a bimini top.

I was thinking about moving the traveler to just in front of the companionway.
This is a leverage point not significantly different from the traveler location
on a wheel-steered 30mki. I know moving it forward will cause the load on the
traveler to be much greater and my leverage is going to be lower. I might need
extra blocks to gain leverage on the main sheet. I will also need strong
backing blocks under the traveler. I may also have to create a new attachment
point on the boom.

Has anyone done the research and calculations required to do this project?
Better yet... has anyone already done this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ryan

Hey everyone,

My spray dodger/gerry-rigged bimini top has seen better days.

I'm thinking about losing the spray dodger to increase visibility, but keeping
it in storage for when I go in open water - and just buying a nice bimini top
and frame for cruising around.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a bimini system for a 1976 30mki? It's a
tiller boat and the main traveler is at the back of the cockpit.

Also, I think a black bimini would look great. Is the color black a bad idea
bc of heat? I see so many dark navy tops... Dark navy can't be that much
cooler than black. I would also buy a black sail cover.

This is a shot of the boat:

If you have a few wood working tools handy, they are easy to build yourself. I
built my handrails on my 30-1 out of teak. All you need is a hole-saw, jig saw

I wouldn't do that for a boat. I have an RTL-SDR radio and it is fun to play

It is not a real good radio and very quirky to set up. NO WAY would I trust it

The cheapest approach is to use a RTL-SDR (Software Defined Radio) dongle ($21
on Amazon, cheaper on eBay) plus a free AIS decoder. It pipes decoded NMEA
sentences to OpenCPN. Works great but takes a while to setup. I have a few

Hey Randy,

I have 30-1 hull number 377. She's a 1976 model year built in 12/75.

I too have a slider between the head and the salon, but nothing between the
V-berth and the head. I'd imagine it would have to be a swing door and it
would probably be a tight fit.

I'm on the train, so I cant really view this link right now, but Aaron Rouhi

C Sailors-

I noticed the owner of C 30 MK1 hull #1, Rick Bushie, is on this list. It's
awesome that boat is still sailing, and that her owner is in this community.

The C 30 MK1 hull #7 I just bought has a sliding door between the salon and
the head, but no door between the head and the v-berth. Some of the C 30 MK1
brochures (I suspect later ones) show a hinged door between salon and head, and
a folding door or double hinged doors between head and v-berth. Does anyone
know if the door(s) between head and v-berth were an addition in later hull
numbers? Or maybe my boat's doors were removed by a former owner and never
replaced. Thanks in advance.

Also, Rick, what is the displacement of your boat? Sailboat
data.com and the brochures show 8000 pounds. But the previous
owner of hull #7 thinks it's higher, like 10,000 pounds. I'll measure her
precise displacement by differencing truck scale weights of loaded and unloaded
trailer after I launch her this spring, but just wanted to check with you.

Time for a discussion on our favorite boat tools Aside from the usual
collection of wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and locking pliers, what do you
find indispensable for boat work?

Dave said: "For cutting consider an oscillating tool like a Fein, with a
circular bimetal blade. (where has this thing been all my life???) This
is the boat repair guy's friend, second only to the angle grinder"

Yep, a vibrating saw is a valuable tool. I have the Dremel MultiMax corded
(the cordless ones don't have the oomph to get the job done). Can't beat it
for making plunge cuts and flush cuts. Also use it with a flexible caulk
removal blade for removing ports, hardware, etc. that is sealed with silicone,
polyurethane, polysulfide, etc.

However, my favorite all around go to tool is this:

GearWrench 85035 35 Pc MicroDriver Set - Nut Drivers ...

For hose clamps, it's a 5/16" nut driver. Can't imagine why anyone uses a
screwdriver on a hose clamp if they have a nut driver.

The other tool I use a lot is a 1/4 inch shank cone grinding stone for making
the chamfer on deck penetrations.

Every boat should have a cheap digital multi-meter on board.

The other electrical "thingie" for cruisers is a polarity tester. Yeah, your
breaker panel has a little reverse polarity light but what if it's burned out?
Get one of these:

What's your "must have" tool?

Listers,

I'm heading to the caribbean next month for a much-needed vacation on a cruise

short time, Tortola.

I'm looking for recommendations on a trustworthy sailboat (or, if I have to,

excursions offered through the cruise line tend to be more motor-with-the
sail-up, don't-touch-the-lines, booze cruises - which I'm looking to avoid.
Instead, I'd like to just go out, sail around, snorkel, beach, etc. on my own
schedule.

Any suggestions?

All the best,

Regarding your repair project, Sailing Anarchy's Fixit Forum has had some great

Subject: Stus-List New to me C 33

I have purchased a 1976 C 33 MK I that had some fire damage (due to a fire on
a neighboring boat) to the outside of the starboard side of the hull. she is
floating but dirty all around. I am planing on doing a modest restore on her.
I am not looking for perfection but for a nice fun to sail boat that I will
also live on. The previous owner was kind of a down to basics kind of guy. No
shore power, no real electronics hank on sails. his daughter said that they
tried to talk him into self tailing winches, and he said "what do I need self
tailers for? I have you to tail the lines!" Has lots of sails, and the rest of
the boat appears to be pretty good. So the plan is this winter clean up the
interior, get shore power set up and some sort of heat so I can spend at least
weekends on board working on the boat. I have her in a winter wet storage slip
and the everything is winterized except the engine. she has the mast down and
winter cover frame is up. Once I am in the final "winter slip" I will winterize
the engine. Once the weather warms up enough I will have the boat hulled and I
will do fiberglass repairs and paint the exterior. So a couple of questions:
1.) First and really simple, where is the cushion for the double bunk supposed
to go when not in use? I don't see any simple locations. I have moved it as
there is a bit of deck leaking over that settee.
2.) There was some damage to the side of the hull, and the neighboring boat's
mast came down on the cabin top. There is some cracking on the cabin top, soft
side deck and both of the fixed ports are damaged.
Obviously the ports are long off the market. I see a couple of options
make over-sized ports and surface mount to the cabin top sides both sides.
(likely least expensive)
Get all new opening Bomar Gray 6X23 inch ports. Looks like they may fit, has
anyone installed them?
Get two bomar ports and move one of the existing ports over and have two fixed
and two opening ports (saves some money but the lenses on the existing ports
are not great and looks like someone has tried to stop leaks with caulk, so may
just be full of frustration)
3.) Where can I find out the fiberglass layup schedule? I want to duplicate it
as much as possible. I have read that they used unidirectional roving on the
boat. My plan on the hull side is to put a few layers on inside just to hold
the shape, then from the outside to grind down till I get to good glass and
build back up from there. On the cabin top and side decks I plan on cutting off
the top layer of fiberglass and replacing core and re-glass. Then paint the
topsides and deck with one part paint and call it a day.
Good news is the boat has a Atomic 4 that runs like a champ! Made the 25 mile
trip from storage yard to new home without a hiccup.

Hi Chuck,

Yes it'll work fine with any instruments that can talk to a NMEA 2000 network.

Since you have the Tactick system that transmits NMEA 0183 you'll need this
converter :
http://www.waveinn.com/nautical-fishing/actisense-ngw-1-nmea-0183-to-2000-gateway/1307655/p?utm_source=google_products_medium=merchant_producte=1662583=us=CjwKEAjw4s2wBRDSnr2jwZenlkgSJABvFcwQTGaulDcBcVV4wiHa3zIgsZyuGuUAaftmvj4Cz__9BxoCiPjw_wcB

 or something similar.

It's a heck of a deal to get genuine "designed for sailing" equipment for about
the price (Or less) of the Apple toy. And it connects to the internet for
upgrades and future apps. (Runs on Linux)

Re: Stus-List Yanmar engine mounts replacement

2015-08-12 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
I replaced mounts on my 2QM15 while ago using a scissors jack I bought for that

Subject: Stus-List Yanmar engine mounts replacement
From: cnc-list@cnc-list.com
CC: jda...@gmail.com

Anyone have tips for replacing engine mounts on a Yanmar 3HM? In terms of the
logistics, like how to prop up the engine, get the old mounts out, etc.
I have the transmission out now for a rebuild (fwd clutch failed) so it's the
perfect time to replace mounts. I'm just going to do the forward two (back end
of v-drive engine) because those are the two the mechanical inspection
(purchase survey at the start of this year) said were delaminating. Plus
Gallery Marine in Seattle has two in stock, not four. If this goes easily maybe
I'll consider replacing the aft two.
I'm going to go with the OEM mounts instead of PYI since several online reviews
said Yanmar OEMs were significantly better (and they look it too - a lot more
rubber for vibration dampening). The engine vibrates a fair amount now, and a
slight misalignment might be what caused the transmission premature wear.

Copying a mail from Martin below in 2013 on the list. Martin, I'd be interested
in hearing more if you still recall the work you did (even though your engine
is a Perkins, so the mounts are different). What did you mean by the existing
engine mount bolts didn't meet your standards? I'm ignorant of what the issue
with lag and stripped threaded bolts is. I'm expecting the existing mounts may
be hard to get out because the bolts/nuts look a bit rusted on.
I saw your suggestion of a scissor jack, but I'm not sure where I would place
that? The engine doesn't have super good flat surfaces between it and the hull.
And the plates the mounts attach to look too small to fit a jack in. I've read
that the mount nuts can just be used to raise the engine until its raised
enough to slip the mounts out (block it with scrap wood at that point). Is that
actually the best way? I have some pictures I could upload.

I replaced all 4 of Calypso's engine mounts (Perkins 4-108) a while back. I
used the RD Engine Mounts offered by PYI, Inc. As none of the existing engine
mount bolts met my standards ( a combo of lag and stripped threaded bolts) the
job became slightly more complex than imagined at the start.

In 1970 Bruckmann's was laminating a steel plate on top of a wood base to build
up the engine support frames. Once I understood what was under all the
fiberglass and paint I decided to drill and tap new bolt holes, using the older
ones if possible.

The results when finished were worth the effort. I did re-align the
engine/reduction gear to the prop shaft. The engine vibration transmitted
through the hull was significantly reduced with the added benefit of being
confident that the engine would stay put if the boat broached or was knocked
down in a heavy sea.

One of the least expensive tools to purchase that may help is a small scissor
jack to be used in holding the engine in place while changing the mounts. Let
me know if you want more info on how I approached the process, but there is
much already written about the topic available.

I have seriously considered going to Ohio to look at the CC 99 (rabbit). The

I will echo what John has asked. What are you planning to do with the boat?

I have raced weekly on a CC115 for the past 6 years and have sailed quite a
bit and raced some on and against a 99 as well. Of the four models I believe
these are the most commonly raced

The CC 115 sails extremely well to wind but likes to have a good sized crew
to run it. We like to have 11 bodies on board when we race to give adequate
weight on rail and to get all the jobs done. Both the 115 and 99 have
oversized spinnaker and pole but the 115 requires dip pole gybes since it has
a mast end and a guy end on the pole. This requires a mast person as well as
a foredeck person for gybes. The 99 can do end for end or dip pole so
requires one less body. Last year in a race week 7 was an adequate crew size
 on a 99.

The rig on the 115 is quite large. The main sheet is led to a winch on
either coaming and is more work to run than that on the 99 which is I believe
6 or 8 to one with ratcheting cam cleats. The traveler on the 99 seems to
work better than that on the 115 as well. Much else is the same on the two
 models

The interiors of both the 99 and 115 are quite nice but the aft cabin in the
99 is a bit more cramped although my wife and I have slept quite comfortably
in the aft cabin on a 99 more than once.

If going offshore the 115 is a far bigger boat than the 99 but I cannot speak
 for the 110 or 121.

For rigging the loads and simplicity of the 99 are very nice. Many of the
adjustments such as backstay are not hydraulic and are well geared and easily
adjusted. By comparison the loads on the 115 are higher making it difficult
to adjust outhaul, halyard etc while hard on the wind.

If you want a 99 for racing the boat named Rabbit is for sale. It is hull
#1, has the original 6'6 keel, carbon rig, bow sprit, carbon wheel and
custom Spartan interior. This would be the fastest CC99 in existence and
there is a huge difference in performance between the 6.5 ft keel and the 5.5
version. Note that if you are concerned about going places because of a deep
draft then forget the 115 which I believe is 7 ft and go for the 5.5 ft 99.

Both of the newer CCs that I have regularly sailed on and raced on are very
nice designs and very nice sailing boats. CC IMO really dropped the ball
when they changed to only the shallower keel on the 99 as it has affected the
performance noticeably but is still a very well performing boat even with the
5.5 ft keel. The shallower keel has the weight a bit aft on the 99 compared
to the 6.5 ft keel making it very important to get weight forward for optimum
trim. A Carbon rig 6.5 ft keel version here in Halifax is very fast and an
Olson 30 that has raced against both variants of the 99 commented how much
faster the deeper keel one was.

You are not going to do wrong with either the 99 or the 115 but if short
handed sailing a lot the smaller 99 is easier to handle. IMO CC made 4 very
lovely models in these boats. Good luck with your search

Oh - and the cut out transoms on all models are something I am very envious
about. Swimming off the 99 is very convenient compared to climbing up the
transom and over the pushpit on our Frers 33

Howdy listers, Last year I had my forestay replaced (for a new roller furler)
and it ended up being longer than the original by maybe about 4 or 5 inches .
I have adjusted the forestay all the way down but I still need plenty of
backstay to keep it all tight. So now my mast rake is about 15 inches at the
boom. I don’t have a ton of weather helm but it’s hard to be sure because I
replaced the old main at the same time that I redid the forestay and the new
sail is much more efficient. The extra rake also lowers the boom so I need to
use topping lift to keep it off the dodger. So…..how many inches of rake do you
have? And what would you consider optimal? I will have to redo the forestay
to fix this but it may be worth it. As always, I appreciate all the opinions
and advice! Cheers, Joe Boyle30 MK1 ‘ZIA’Annapolis

The engine stop push pull that was attached to the Yanmar panel had its last

If everything is good, then this battery can crank that engine without

breaking a sweat, even if the engine does not start easily and has to

crank for a bit. New connections are not automatically good connections.

Check resistance at every connection involved, and also measure voltage

drop at the starter when being cranked. It is also possible for a

battery to have one bad cell that will take a surface charge and make

the battery look good until you put a load on it. Harbor Freight has

load testers for not a lot of money. You could also take the battery to

most places that sell batteries for a free load test.

From what you are saying, it sounds like either your T-1275

what happens. Absolutely any car battery, including the cheapest

That looks pretty much the same as I found on Windburn.
I used 2 white oak for two of the girders ( stringers ? ) and
1.5 for the center girder. The challenge was cutting the oak
to match the curve of the bilge, which was different on the
two sides. Further, the sides did not run parallel bow to stern.
I did smooth the worst of the bumps down with a grinder
and applied a coating of resin to re-seal everything.

I see from your picture #9 it was the same for Admiral Maggie.

The area just in front on the foremost keel bolt appeared to be
the lowest point in the bilge. A bit of resin was poured in their
to level it, and a remote pickup installed for a Whale Gulper 320.

Getting the height right was also a process. I assumed the original
supports had settled a bit and there is not much square in the boat
to compare to. The top surface of the aluminum casting the mast
sits on is not the same thickness front to back, and the bottom
of the mast is not square. No idea if all of that was by design.

I also installed two 4 x 1/4 thick aluminum angle pieces, bolted
horizontally through the front and rear girders. They were drilled
and tapped to hold the machine screws coming down from the
mast step. Was your block screwed down directly into the girders?

Hey Nate,Here are some pictures from when I replaced my mast step few years
back. The stringers were so rotted that I was able to remove them pretty much
by hand! It was not pretty...

I replaced them with 5 new stringers made out of 8/4 mahogany. Make sure you
mark up the height of your oak block so you can match it. This is also a good
time to installed a bilge pump pickup hose in front of the mast (lowest part of
the bilge). Doing that will keep your bilge dry...

I'll soon have the mast out of my 1980 30-1 (for relocating her by truck) and
want toforestall future mast step issues by redoing/strengtheningit now. The
mast was last out 8 years ago. I've never pulled the oak mast step base plate,
so don't know what to anticipate underneath. Advice welcome, pictures very
welcome.

I'm imagining figuring out the necessary drainage and keel bolt access, then
using epoxy-saturated oak board or McMaster Carr fiberglass sheets to built a
new support step, and maybe filling in what I hear is a large empty area with
micro-balloon slurry?

She's an all-freshwater boat which sits in a cradle 7 months a year, which may
be why its lasted this long with no signs of trouble yet.

Pegathy takes 5'. I have run across the bar using the line formed by the
Brewerton Channel East range lights several times in the last few years, and,
per the charts, have never had less than 1.5 feet under the keel. I'd do it
again anytime except low tide or in strong winds. Even going slowly the
shortcut has saved me much time coming from the Patapsco. This is, of course,
no guarantee you'll make it. I have been keeping just south of the range line.
The lights are easy to line up. If you have any doubts after looking at the
charts, go the long way. And, if you do choose to cross the bar, do it under
power and do it slowly.
That's my experience, not a recommendation.

I was there 2 years ago. We didn't understand the approach and traveled way
too far north before turning east. You really need to stay east of the shallow
ridge that extends from the danger range marker. It's easy to see on the
charts...if you know to look. We draft 6.5ish. We didn't have any trouble in
the square.

Why in the world would I not rip this out a simply run a line from boom end
to cabin top winch? As is, the outhaul runs from boom end, through the
purchase system, through a sheave, through a turning block at the mast base,
through a deck organizer and finally to a winch on the cabin top. They
weren’t even particularly good blocks inside the mast. I would think any
mechanical advantage would be lost to friction Perhaps it serves a purpose
in that the line won’t jump when taken off the winch.

There has to be a block tucked well into the boom attached at some point

Aaron, The sale is 10% off everything in the Defender catalogue and that is the
same whether you order online or buy at the warehouse and take it with you.
The warehouse is less than 60 minutes from New Haven and IMO it is worth making
the trip if you can. Eliminating the $ for shipping, especially important for
heavier or bulky items, can make it worthwhile though you will pay CT sales tax
of 6.35%. Just the savings on bottom paint can make the drive worthwhile. Any
/ everything else is then gravy. The warehouse is a zoo especially on
Thursday and Saturday mornings of the sale. Anything not in stock has to be
shipped, though they usually have most things. One year I placed an order for
a halyard with the rigging shop when I arrived and it was ready by the time I
was ready to check out. The “flea sale / seconds / clearance” section and the
manufacturers’ reps section can also yield great finds / information. Brian
