I use my Hobbes meter.  I take a picture at each fill-up and try to keep 
the tank at least 1/2 full. I have a pretty accurate picture of my per 
hour consumption. Seems close enough for me.

Stus-List Re: Masthead unit for Raymarine I50 dislays

In spite of what they say the new masthead unit is not compatible with the i60 
instruments.  The direction it's fine, but the wind speed adjustment available 
is not sufficient to compensate To get the old head to like the new data 
protocols.  I would think it is the same, or worse, for the i50 series.

I ended up getting a new head and having to also install the various "talk" 
conversions.

I'll third that.  Between eastern lake Erie and and western lake Ontario 
there are more well kept C's that any other area in the world.  I got 
my Alera from Niagara on the Lake on Lake Ontario, where she was made.  
She was on the hard at the Niagara on the Lake Sailing Club and we 
shipped her to the Pacific Northwest.   I was b;pen away by the yard at 
the NoL Sailing Club...over 60% of the sailboats there were classic (pre 
93) C Not too sure about Lake Erie,, but I suspect there is a 
healthy population of C there as well.


I'm sure you can find your next boat there.

I believe she’s worth about $20k…thinking realistically.
Before y’all think I’m throwing out the anchor - there is a very nice 
35-Mk III for sale locally…!

Our club has a group discount at Fisheries that I am happy to share.  
The more it is used the deeper the discounts go.  The actual discount 
amount varies from item to item.  But, in some areas it can be 
significant.  They also give a 10% discount for the first 90 day you own 
your boat.


Call in a mention Quartermaster Yacht Club and have them set up an 
account for you that is tied to the club discount.


The only other chandlery I can recommend is Hodges Marine.

anywhere else on marine electronics including Raymarine.

Hell, Catalina actually produced an amazingly well build 38 footer 
that was designed by Sparkman and Stevens with plywood cored decks and 
solid fiberglass hull.
Making an argument as to why you're hanging onto your boat is great.  
But to dismiss quality brans, wholesale like that, is just not helpful 
banter.  Thanks for the input, though.

That is a major reason I have held on to my C 37;  boats that can

boat and don't handle as well..!

Alera has that old grey hoses for fresh water.  I am installing a Raritan Fresh 
Head toilet that will require a connection to my pressurized water. Not sure 
when will and will not work with this old hose..  I picked this up.  Not sure

We finish with Howard Feed & Wax, a beeswax/orange oil polish 
conditioner.  The teak drinks it up.  Smells great too! We use it

I use Watco Teak oil available at Home Depot and Lowes if that's what 
your referring to.   I usually wipe the wood down with a cleaner like 
diluted Pinesol in a spray bottle.  Then I clean the wood with 
Denatured Alcohol and let dry.  Then use a soft terry cloth rag to 
wipe on some teak oil.  Let soak in and wipe off any excess.  It 
seals the wood and hides any dings and makes look very nice.

I had the wheel pilot on Alera, my 37+/40.  It may fine for for your intended 
use.  But as far as I know, it is still a belt drive unit.  The primary point 
of failure is the reduction gear.

I went with below deck and regret not doing is years ago.

With such a short haul, I don't know if this 
would be worth the effort.  But when we brought 
Alera from Niagara on the Lake to Seattle, Rob 
MacLachlan,  of South Shore Yachts who 
de-commissioned her for transport, suggested we 
cover the hull with a layer ofJoy dish soap.  We 
did and when she got here we washed it off and it 
took the road grit and salt with it.

Stus-List 1980 40 Cheetah needs TLC

I senior member of our Yacht club has pretty much 
abandoned his 1980 C 40.  He is very motivated 
to sell her but not willing to do much to get her 
sold.  She is not listed anywhere yet...


Cheetah was raced for years and has a decent 
complement of both racing and cruising 
sails.  The westbrook diesel was disassembled to 
clean some salt crystals out of the exit area 
from the exchanger and not reassembled.  So, she 
has not been run in 2-3 years along with 
everything else that goes with letting a boat sit 
for that long.  But she is a C and he may be 
willing to sell her to the right buyer for cheap!

Stus-List Intermittent stalling

We are off on a two week cruise.  Second day running the engine starts to 
falter, then stall. I check the Racor, no water.  I did replace the fuel pump 
last year after we ran out of fuel w the fuel tank half full.  But it seemed to 
be fine.

She started and we stopped in a Edmonds to top off the tank, but it only took 7 
g.

She then ran pretty solid for the next 2 hours with only a few issues.

I have  not changed the fuel filters for about 150 hours over two years.

I am thinking that either the filters need replacing or the fuel pump just does 
not lift the fuel enough.

Any help is appreciated.

Stus-List 3HM35F oil capacity puzzle

Every time I change oil on Alera I check the engine spec for the Yanmar 3HM35F 
that calls for 5.7 quarts.  I have never been able to get more than 4 quarts 
out or in.

I use an electric pump extractor via the dip stick hole.  I understand that the 
angle of the engine on my 37+ results in the oil laying at the aft end of the 
pan and try to make sure the tube gats all the way back there.

Anyone else been able to replace over 4 quarts!

in the gear box. Mine did this when I bought it 
and a knowledgable A4 mechanic fixed it in 
about an hour after unknowledgeable mechanics 
dorked around for many hours on cables, props, 
etc. and many hundreds of dollars. There is 
definitely help to be had on the Moyer forums 
for this exact issue. It is also covered in 
detail on the Moyer A4 overhaul manual.


If you are handy you can fix it yourself in 
about 30 minutes. You take off the gearbox 
cover plate, remove a set screw that holds a 
clutch ring/collar thing in place, rotate ring 
one way or the other one notch, put screw back 
in, do not drop screw down inside gearbox, test 
it out. It may make getting the engine in or 
out of gear a bit harder, there is a trade off. 
There is also an after market collar with 
notches closer together to avoid the too much too little issue.
There are times when you need to know that you 
have maximum thrust - like when you are about 
to ram another boat or dock. To my mind this is 
a serious safety issue. A young, strong crewman 
fended my stern off when this happened to me 
while backing out of my slip in high wind. I 
parked the boat immediately and called a yard with A4 experience.

moving the engine closer/further from the 
cable.  Most cables are attached to the engine

problem while you are watching the engine.


It could also be as simple as adjusting the cable.

I have heard that a strip of chamois cut into a 
"T" works good.  I just wrap a 10-12" length of 
left over 1/4" double braided line around one of 
the holes so it lays at the buttom of the rail 
and it works fine.  IMO, no need for anytyhign custom or special.

We picked our prior boat, a 72 35 MK1, at an 
auction.  The person that brought it to the sale 
location did not open the seacock and the engine 
overheated so bad that the paint burned off.  I 
am not too sure what degree of harm it 
precipitated.  But eventually, I got it running 
like a champ.  They are incredibly rugged 
machines.  FWIW, to my ear the engine sounded pretty good.

I shredded several knuckles on my 35 MK1 working 
on the A4.  Moyer is indeed the best source for info and support.


For electronics, in addition to the distributor, 
check your plug wires too.  Make sure the plugs 
and points are properly gapped.


I agree that sticking valves are often the 
issue.  The nice thing about the flathead A4 is 
that you can see the valves through the spark 
plug hole.  Put some Marvel Mystery Oil into each 
cylinder.  Then hand crank the engine while 
looking at the valves in each cylinder.   If one 
or more are stuck you should be able to get it to move with a screw driver.


I ended up pulling the head off and working on 
the valves, head and block.  The water passages 
in the block were my biggest issue.  Crud and a 
few chunks of impeller were the causes.  I used 
the Moyer flush kit and replaced the heat 
exchanger.  Never had issues after that.


Could also be a gunked up carb.  If non marine 
fuel was used there could be a bunch of gunk in 
the float reservoir or jets.  I just replaced 
mine new for old.  Rebuilding it also works.


The A4 it a simple machine.  I'm sure you will 
get it up and running just fine, in time.

There is a lot of expertise there on A4s not restricted to A4s in C


Also I think from the sounds of it you may have 
a stuck valve or 2 or 3. They will collectively 
get you running again. Probably the first 
question will be compression numbers for all 4 cylinders.

You may remember a few months ago I asked some 
questions about rewiring the panel. I appreciate 
the advice at that time.  After approx 50 hours 
I am mostly done, it's not perfect but vastly 
improved.  I built a harness from the panel 
switches to my converted cutting board (it was 
almost the right size and cost $7.00 as I didn't 
want to use plywood) distribution system.  All 
connectors were replaced, properly crimped and 
insulated heat shrink to seal the connectors.


 I still have some heat shrink on the main 
cables (the elec tape is temp while testing 
circuits  tonight )and a bit of tidying/labeling to do.

Speaking of C 40's, I was down at our club 
today hanging out on Alera, under the winter 
cover that still has to come off.  As I walked 
the docks I saw that there is a 40 there that has 
been neglected.  I checked and according to the 
registration sticker on it, it looks like has not 
been used since 2017.  I called the club 
dock-master and apparently the owner is on notice 
to vacate the slip by the end of this month as 
the club requires boats to be both properly 
maintained and used.  This is neither.


I reached out to the owner but have not heard 
back yet. Not sure of the year but from the cut 
of the ports I suspect it is from the late 
80s.  If anyone in the PNW or anywhere else with 
the will to relocate the boat is interested, I'll 
see what the deal is the let everyone know.  I 
think it would be an awesome deal for 
someone.  Maybe even a freebee! (Yes Dave, I'm thinking of you and Dave).

I get what you're going through.  I'm 73 and my 
wife Lynn is only a few years behind me and we 
only cruise together; never with a crew except for day sails.


The idea of getting around to our favorite spots 
in hours instead of days is quite 
attractive.  But the related costs and noise have 
been serious issues.  The 37+ is just the perfect 
boat for us in so many ways it is hard to 
consider moving to the dark side.  Though it may 
be inevitable as we slowly deteriorate into 
useless blobs of rotting flesh...Gosh.. that got a little dark.


Anyway...best of luck and I hope you don;t get booted by Stu!

Ours came from UKNW in Sidney, BC.  Stewart actually brought them through U S 
Customs and delivered and installed both.  The mailsail for our in boom furling 
was built completely wrong by some loft in upstate NY.  So, I knew the last it 
needed to be build correctly.  It was!  Fixed a bunch of issues we’d been 
having.

+1 on the dehumidifier.  I have a 30 pint dehumidifier on all winter.  It keeps

I keep my last gen iPad on the boat with only a 
few apps, other than Navionics and all my sailing 
related stuff.  It shows up on the network as 
"Alera's iPad"  That way we have several charts 
running at the same time. One at the helm and then other anywhere else we want.


I can add it to my plan for an extras $10 a month.

I am certain my bilge pump switch is more 
reliable than the wifi. In the winter I have a 
garboard plug so it’s not an issue then. I 
wanted to be able to monitor systems from 
anywhere and I have wifi. I get a little rain 
water in the bilge through the mast but it’s 
not usually a problem, cold beer isn’t a 
necessity either but it’s nice, I have a solar 
panel so battery power isn’t usually an issue 
either. And I live 20 minutes away from the 
boat. Do I need it? No. Would I use it? Yes 
absolutely! Realistically I can monitor our home 
from my cell phone too, I just enjoy the 
relatively inexpensive convenience and peace of mind.

IMHO, they're superior to any others.  I've

I mounted one of these between the locker and the 
roller.  I bungie it  up when dropping and let it 
ride on the chain on the way up.  I also use it 
to take the tension off the windlass any time the anchor is set or up.

We used Kiwi grip on our 35 MK 1.  Once the masking was done it went on easily.

On my ‘85 37, I’m thinking of mounting heavy 
7-inch alum “C” channel beneath my bow 
cleats (replacing backer plates), securing to 
the bottom legs a double glassed shelf (3/4” 
m.grade ply) to span the locker opening p-s. The 
cleats are center-locker, which seems an ideal 
position for the Maxwell windlass Santa is 
belatedly delivering. I see added benefit of 
more structure in the bow but your thoughts are 
welcome on possible issues from this 
arrangement. It does reduce access to the locker 
somewhat, but a 10” shelf out of 28” opening allows some room yet.

Stus-List AIS and IPAd...

I have used Marine Traffic and it's companion 
App, On Course on my iPad for years.  Both 
require access to the internet and rely on the 
wireless devices GPS.  And, they both work great.


MarineTraffic shows all of the AIS signals, tags 
each with vessel information as well as course 
and speed.  You can set it so that is shows the 
projected course out in an adjustable number of  minutes.


On Course goes one step further and assigns you 
an AIS number and position in almost real 
time.  It is transmitted over the AIS network.  Pretty slick!

Yanmar 3HM35 here.  We cruise at 7.3 or so @ 2600 
RPM with a clean bottom and prop.  If the prop 
and bottom are all crudded up,.6.5 and she overheats...

Stus-List Anchor Windlass for a C 37+

You really need to glass in a shelf with 
sufficient strength to withstand the torque and 
pressure exerted when lifting the anchor an 
chain.  IMO a bolted shelf is not going to do it.


Also, keep in mind that the little arm that rests 
on the chain/rode sticks up about 3/4 in.  You'll 
want  to mount the windlass as high as possible 
to make the chain pull angle as horizontal as 
possible.  However, if you just use the height of 
the windlass without taking that additional 
height into account you can't close that hatch to 
the chain locker.  (Do not ask how I know that)


You will love it...a decent windlass changes everything.

Listers,

As you may remember, I?m close to a decision on 
adding an anchor windlass to my 37+ C, and, 
based on my research, I think this may be the one to go with:

For mounting, I think I?m going to create a 
hanging shelf inside the anchor locker that is 
attached by several bolts to the starboard and 
aft most lip that the hatch rests upon when closed.


Good plan? Reconsider? Better ideas?

Stus-List Stuck screw

I'm pretty sure that  the screwed ends are merely 
car stops are anchored top the track, not the deck.


We had a similar problem with the babystay track 
on Alera.  We undid the mounting bolts, squeezed 
in some life calk and tightened them back down.  Has not leaked since ,

I have a rainwater leak that appears to be 
coming from the short track mounted on the top 
of the cockpit coaming.  It is through bolted 
with 6 bolts and I can acess the nuts from the 
rear cabin roof and I have been able to loosen 
those.  However, there are two roundhead screws, 
one at each end of the track that I cannot 
budge.  I have tried my little Makita impact 
driver that has never failed me, and no 
movement.  I tried iwth a small sledgehammer and 
an manual impact driver and nothing.  So I can 
think of three options and would appreciate input:


1.  Since the leak is presumably coming down the 
bolts, I could remove them and try to jam enough 
butyl or other sealent to try to seal around the 
bolts as they pass through the cabintop.
2.  Shear off the tops of the screws 
(oscillating tool?), remove the track and then 
try to etract the body (or not).  Since I have 
never used those tracks and don?t intend to, I 
am not terribly concerned about functionality 
and I don?t see why 6 bolts would not be sufficient if they were used.
3.  Find something more powerful in the way of 
an impact driver.  I checked around and have not 
yet found an ?industrial? sized version to rent.

Stus-List Painting Flexofold props?

I have used Pettit 1793 on the Maxprop 3 blade folding prop on my last two haul 
outs.  It holds up for about a year or so here in the Pacific Northwest.  I 
suspect 1792 is comparable.

Stus-List Engine starting issue

My starter button was giving me problems.  It turned out the the button switch 
was loose.  The rubber cap concealed that fact.  I tighten the ring on the 
Loose switch and it was fine.  

Sometime things are easier to fix than we expect...

I did the install with my checkbook.  They 
glassed the shelf in the locker then mounted the 
windlass to it.  Wired direclly to the closest 
house battery and never use without the engine running.

I've seen several installations that used a vertical windlass that
straddled the front bulkhead so that the motor was in the v-berth and then
covered up. Not sure if this is possible on the 37/40. Chris's seems
cleaner hidden below but might be useful to have that extra drum on the
foredeck.

Stus-List Fuel lift pump

I picked up a new lift play today and will 
install it soon.  I am considering adding an 
electric pump between the tank and the lift 
pump.  Does anyone know the inside diameter of 
that feed fuel line?  I think I ought to know before I cut mine.

Joe, I like the remote fuel pressure gauge! That 
looks like aviation or race car technology. Tom 
is trying to find out why he can?t get that last 
15 gallons of fuel. I believe Josh has the same 
Yanmar and believe he posted his vacuum numbers 
so there is something to compare to. He can also 
shut off the fuel valve when running the engine 
and get a sense of what vacuum the fuel pump is 
drawing. If it won?t hold vacuum maybe there is 
an air leak somewhere. If the pump won?t make 1 
inch of mercury he knows it?s probably a pump 
problem. That?s all I was trying to suggest 
before he gets into a new pump. And as a bonus 
for around 20$ he will also have a primary fuel filter monitor.

Stus-List Fuel Lift Pump

So, if I understand recent responses to my recent post on running out of fuel 
at less than an empty tank, the theory is that with a weak fuel lift pump at a 
certain fuel level in the tank, the pump would stop lifting fuel, thereby 
causing the engine to run out of fuel.

So, guess I’ll take a shot at replacing it and seeing if that solves the 
problem.

Anyone replace the fuel lift pump on a Yanmar 3HM35F?  I am wondering if the 
arm that rides the cam is above the at recast engine oil level.

Stus-List Fuel Polisher?

I have  a  weird issue.   2x last  year a  ran  out  of  diesel and  needed 
only 25  gallons  to  fill  my  40  gallon  tank.And, yes, I made  sure  it 
 was  topped  off.   I pulled  the  pickup  tube  to  see  if  that  was  the  
issue,  but  it  was  solid straight and  clean.   In  fact, I  never  see  any 
 crud  or  water  in  my  Rancor.I want to  just  pump out  the  fuel  to  
get  a decent measurement of  exactly  how  much  fuel  is  in  the  tank.

So, I’m thinking, get a fuel polisher.  Waddaya all think?

While I am not in the mid-Atlantic, I agree that

Stus-List 34+ traveller relocate

I am  in the midst of a below deck autopilot on Alera.  The 37+ has access on 
the head of the master bunk, though I have been able to drop in through the 
lazarette as well.  At 72, 6 ft+ and 220 lbs It was dicey, but doable.  
Although I am not at all sure I could have mounted the drive platform that way.

Maybe mounting in the lazarete and attaching it to the quadrant would work for 
you...

Our traveler is just forward of the binnacle.  I think it was a 
custom factory job.  Seems solid but I have no idea if the parts 
where it is anchored were reenforced or not.

Looking for guidance. Has anyone moved the traveler on a 34+ aft to 
the binnacle area? The boom is almost 15? long, and the traveler is 
only 5? from the mast, giving horrible purchase upwind. Looking to 
move it closer to end boom sheeting, but worried about structural 
integrity to support the traveler.

Quick Genius Windlass w 150' Chain and 200" rode.

I installed it with my checkbook when we relocated Alera to the PNW,

NOTE - Make sure to measure the clearance to the hatch with the chain 
or rode in due to the lifting of the rider thingie.

Long ago, in the beforetime, there was a posting by a C?er who 
installed a shelf and windless inside his anchor locker - and I 
think it was on a 37+, though not positive about the boat.


Would love to see photos and info about installation, materials and 
windless used.

Our 1980 30-1 has the original 2QM15 and instrument panel. Last night on
the mooring, the warning buzzer above the usual three idiot lights started
going off, intermittently - 15 or so seconds on, 15 or so seconds off,
repeat. The big red switch was OFF, the ignition switch was OFF with the
key on its usual in-cabin hook, the engine was not running, and there
should NOT have been any power to the buzzer!I The oil pressure light
glowed faintly when the buzzer was buzzing. I repeat, the engine was not
running and the ignition was OFF. We've had this Good Old Boat 15 years
now, this is new.

Today, mystified, I disconnected the buzzer, to avoid further annoying the
neighbors. I had some tranny work done recently, maybe the installers
bumped the wiring or something..,. ??

I assume some short somewhere? Any ideas? I faintly remember a
short-finding recipe on this wonderful list many years ago, anyone remember
it?

I think that is exactly what has been done to our Radial Wheel in the
photos I linked (i.e. there is another plate below the wheel, out of sight
in the photos)

If the Radial Wheel gave up the ghost as Chuck suggests could happen, the
emergency tiller would still work. Better than nothing I suppose.
