[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 31. 2023
Got a little behind, what with finishing up and taking down the station! May 31, the last day of our spring season, was another slow day; 16 new birds, all likely year-round or summer residents except for a couple of late Lincoln's Sparrows. Caught our third Western Wood-Pewee in as many days, the only three of the season - they arrived late. Major disappointment was not re-catching the "king" of the small Red-eyed Vireo clan who was banded in 2017; he was seen around the river nets on several occasions but seemed to be fully aware of their locations. Here's the break-down of the final 16 birds banded: Western Wood-pewee 1 Red-eyed Vireo 1 House Wren 1 Gray Catbird 1 Yellow Warbler 5 Common Yellowthroat 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 American Goldfinch 1 Key words describing the season - Weather, water, wildlife (think bobcat), wildfires and wind We were rained out more than usual - 5 days total. The trail from the station to the river became a stream and 2 of the 4 river nets were closed most of the season. The bobcat, which first showed up on May 9, plagued us for the balance of the season, leading to the permanent closure of 2 other nets. My heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteered extra hours to strategically guard the nets so that we could continue to run the station. And then there were the wildfires in Canada and the north winds that brought the smoke down to all of us on the front range - a health hazard for birds (and humans), and which likely delayed the migration of birds continuing north and may impact the breeding season for those that breed in western Canada. Our total of 641 individual birds caught was about average; it will probably be slightly above average when we take into account the number of nets and days open. Flycatcher and warbler numbers appear to continue to be below normal (perhaps not having fully recovered from the heat/fires/storms/etc. of 2020). More info to follow as data is processed! It is always great to see many of you at the station and to get your e-mails responding to these posts! We are already looking forward to fall at Barr Lake - we will be open for visitors starting Friday, August 25 - check here <https://www.birdconservancy.org/what-we-do/education/bird-banding/> for info about registering to visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 28, 2023
Another slow end of season day, banding only 8 birds (plus caught another 9 birds that had already been caught this year). Of note was our first of season (finally!) Western Wood-Pewee - our average per year is about 10, and we normally catch the first around the 5th of May. Flycatchers of all species have been in short supply this season. Here are our 8 newbies for today: Western Wood-Pewee 1 Yellow Warbler 4 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Closed tomorrow (Monday), then open Tuesday and Wednesday. We will take down the station after banding on Wednesday. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 26, 2023
Continued to catch more of our summer residents that are returning to breed another season. Of these species, the House Wrens are the furthest along in their breeding cycle.we've caught several females with brood patches, indicating that they are sitting on eggs. Most of the returning birds that we are catching now are birds that hatched last year - they are the later arrivals after the adults have returned to reclaim their breeding territories! Here's the breakdown of the 22 new birds caught today: House Wren 1 Gray Catbird 3 Cedar Waxwing 2 Yellow Warbler 7 new, 1 banded 2021 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 Song Sparrow 1 Bullock's Oriole 1 House Finch 1 (female with brood patch; I'm guessing the mate of the male we caught 10 days ago; these are the first 2 HOFIs caught at the station area, as opposed to at the feeders at the Nature Center, possibly ever) American Goldfinch 1 We are down to our last 4 days - open this weekend, then Tuesday and Wednesday next week Meredith McBurney Bander, Chatfield Banding Station Bird Conservancy of the Rockies -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. I thought we'd see more action on this nice, cool but sunny day, but it was quite slow. Only 17 new birds total: House Wren 3 Gray Catbird 3 Cedar Waxwing 1 (FOS) Yellow Warbler 3 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 (FOS - this is highly unusual to only catch one, and to have it arrive this late. There have been years when a WIWA was caught the first day of the season) Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 American Goldfinch 1 new, 1 banded 2022 (together in the net) We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 23 & 24, 2023
We've moved into the part of spring when we are almost exclusively catching birds that are returning to Chatfield to breed - Tues our only for sure bird migrating through was a MacGillivray's Warbler; today we had one Lincoln's Sparrow. Hoping the numbers of Catbirds, Chats, Yellow Warblers etc. continue and increase so that we are up to normal levels. Here's Tuesday's 29 new birds: House Wren 2 new, 1 banded 2022 Gray Catbird 11 Yellow Warbler 7 American Redstart 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 2 Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Spotted Towhee 1 And Wednesday's 25: House Wren 1 Gray Catbird 6 new, 1 banded 2021 Yellow Warbler 6 American Redstart 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Bullock's Oriole 4 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 21, 2023
Whether the bad air quality from the fires or wind direction or something else, we had a slow day on Sunday/yesterday. We were kept busy because we had a slew of recaptures of birds already caught/banded this season - birds were out and about, just very little new - of the new captures, only the lone Swainson's Thrush was for certain just stopping to refuel. Here's the 14 new plus 2 returns: Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 6 Yellow Warbler 5 new, 1 banded 2019 American Redstart 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 banded 2022 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 20, 2023
A relatively typical mid-spring day at Chatfield, with lots of summer residents coming back and some species that are migrating through. Highlight was a Yellow Warbler female banded in 2016, making her the oldest of the 25 returned YEWAs we've caught so far this season. Here's a breakdown of the 23 new + 9 returns: Dusky Flycatcher 1 House Wren 3 Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 4 new, 2 banded 2021 Yellow Warbler 1 new, 1 banded 2022, 3 banded 2021, 1 banded 2016 Northern Waterthrush 1 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 5 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 new, 1 banded 2019 Spotted Towhee 1 new, 1 banded 2021 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Bullock's Oriole 1 American Goldfinch 2 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 18. 2023
A busier and quite interesting day, with eight returns, two unusual species, and constantly changing weather. Closed for 30 minutes at 8:30 for rain, then had some sun, then barely got to our cars at the end of the morning before it started to pour. Unusual species - A second year female Lazuli Bunting and same age Northern Parula (the 4th ever caught at the station). Interesting return - My favorite return was an American Redstart who I think of as the patriarch of the small gang of breeding AMREs at Chatfield. He was first caught as a second year bird on 5/14/17 and has been caught most years since (as well as being photographed in the field by Rob Raker). As far as we know, he is the oldest of the group. Here's the breakdown of the 42 new, 8 returns (there were also 11 birds that were caught for the 2nd (or third.) time this season): Dusky Flycatcher 1 Warbling Vireo 1 (FOS) House Wren 2 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 11 new, 1 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 Northern Parula 1 Yellow Warbler 9 new, 2 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 American Redstart 1 new, 1 banded 2017 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 4 new, 1 banded 2022 Brewer's Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 4 Lazuli Bunting 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 banded 2022 Bullock's Oriole 2 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. Our first really nice, sunny spring morning in a week or so. We enjoyed being out, even though the numbers continued low and we are still watching constantly for the bobcat. Most of the birds that we are catching are summer residents/Chatfield breeders as opposed to migrants passing through. Here are today's new birds: House Wren 3 Gray Catbird 4 Yellow Warbler 7 new, 1 banded 2021 MacGillivray's Warbler 2 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 2 Bullock's Oriole 1 banded 2022 (FOS) House Finch 1 (don't ask; I don't know; we *NEVER* catch them at this station!) [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 13, 2023
After two days of rain, we anticipated a busy morning yesterday, if not with migrants passing through then our summer residents out feeding. But it was pretty quiet, with just 24 new birds caught. There was a nice variety, so it was a good learning experience for our visitors from Denver Audubon's Beginning Birder class. Lots of water in some areas of the station; several of the river nets could not be opened because the water was so high. And special thanks to the volunteers who added a day to help convince the bobcat to go elsewhere! (We did not see him/her.) Here's the breakdown: Least Flycatcher 2 Hammond's Flycatcher 2 Dusky Flycatcher 1 (FOS) House Wren 2 Gray Catbird 1 new, 1 banded 2021, recaught 2022 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 (of the 22 YEWAs caught to date, 12 were already banded. All but 1 of the 22 were adults.) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 Green-tailed Towhee 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Red-winged Blackbird 1 We are rained out today, closed on Monday. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 10, 2023
We had a great day, considering we were plagued by drizzle, that required a quick mid-morning close, and a bobcat, which forced us to close some nets and closely monitor all others. Caught 56 new birds. Number 1 highlight was our 106th species - a PALM WARBLER - on our first run of the day. Then lots of first of season birds (see notes in list below), including unusual for us captures - a Plumbeous Vireo and a bunch of Spizella Sparrows. Here's the breakdown: Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Western Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Plumbeous Vireo 1 (FOS) Red-eyed Vireo 1 (FOS) Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 9 Gray Catbird 4 new, 1 banded 2021 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 new, 1 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 Western Palm Warbler 1 (First ever!) [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 9, 2023
Activity picked up a bit today; we had a total of 37 new birds (32 banded today, 5 returns from prior years) of 14 species. Yellow-rumped Warblers are down, Yellows are up, including 4 that we banded in prior years. Caught our first Hermit Thrush of the season, arriving almost 2 weeks behind its usual date. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 4, 2023
We got a late start today due to a drizzle that started when we arrived and lasted for about an hour. But then we opened and had a very nice day, sharing our birds with Christy Carello's Metro State College Ornithology class. Yellow-rumped Warblers continued in good numbers, and our first Yellow Warblers and Gray Catbird arrived pretty much on schedule. Note below that our first three Yellows of the season were all banded by us in prior years! Here a breakdown of the 36 new captures today: Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 4 American Robin 1 (FOS - they are around the station singing every day, but this is the first to come to a net) Gray Catbird 1 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Virginia's Warbler 1 (FOS) Yellow Warbler 2 banded in 2021, 1 banded in 2019 (FOS) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 10 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 3 Spotted Towhee 1 banded in 2017 (the oldest bird caught so far this season) White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 We will be banding mornings Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Mondays) through May 31. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - Week One Report
Hi Birders! This is my first report on spring banding at Chatfield – We started banding on Tuesday, April 25; this report covers our first week. I’ll be reporting on a daily basis moving forward, for the next four weeks. This first week, as usual, was fairly slow; migration is just getting started. We caught some early migrants that are coming through right on schedule – House Wrens, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Lincoln’s Sparrows, even a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Then there were White-crowned Sparrows that most likely wintered at Chatfield and had lots of fat stored up for their relatively short migration back to their breeding grounds. The balance were birds that likely live at Chatfield year-round. Our one rarish bird of the week was an Eastern Phoebe; we’ve only caught three others in the history of the station, but it is becoming a regular in the Chatfield-Waterton area. Here’s the break-down for the 69 new and 7 returns caught in Week One: Eastern Phoebe 1 Black-capped Chickadee 9 new, 3 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021, 1 banded 2019 as an adult, so at least 5 years old. Bushtit 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 (caught together) House Wren 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 13 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon’s 10 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 2 (Adult male with strong Myrtle face pattern but yellow throat) Spotted Towhee 5 new, 1 banded 2022 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 4 new, 1 banded 2018 Lincoln’s Sparrow 5 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel’s 9 American Goldfinch 1 We will be banding mornings Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Mondays) through May 31. [cobirds] Interested in monitoring breeding Bald Eagles?!
Hi All, Bird Conservancy annually monitors nesting Bald Eagles along the Front Range, gathering important data needed to protect this important species. In 2020, Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched a four-year study to help understand current population trends, habitat use and impacts of human disturbance on Bald Eagles along Colorado’s densely populated Front Range, and BCR is partnering with them to help gather the data they need to make good decisions. BCR is organizing for the 2023 monitoring season; it starts with training, via zoom, on Saturday, January 21. Volunteers are then assigned nest(s) to monitor; the goal is once a week for an hour from February through June. (We know this is usually not possible, and many nests have more than one observer assigned.) If you are interested, please send me an e-mail and I will provide more detailed information! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10-23-22
Our final day of banding for 2022 was both slow and very exciting. Only nine birds banded on a day that ended early due to wind. But one of those nine was a Northern Shrike, and that pretty much made up for the lack of activity. None of us had ever seen one that "up close", and we marveled at the shape interesting shape of its bill - we looked carefully but avoided contact! (It appears that this is likely the 2nd ever caught at the banding station, the other one being caught on Nov 6, 1988!) So, here's the final nine for the season: Northern Shrike 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 Lots of data to enter and analysis to be done; I'll be back with a report relatively soon, I hope! We had a good season, with just over 1800 individual birds caught, well above the 1100 caught in our dismal season last year. We'll see how it looks when we factor in net hours. My thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers and staff who make it possible to run 25 nets 6 mornings a week for 9 weeks in order to monitor the songbirds coming through our area each fall. Also, thanks to all our visitors as well as those of you who read and comment on the daily posts! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report October 20 & 21
As we move later into fall, migration slows way down, as most migratory species have passed through. In addition to catching a few of those late migrants, we continue to catch some year-round residents as well as birds that will over-winter at Barr. Some of the captures right now depend on luck - are our nets in locations where the birds that move in tight flocks during the day happen to decide to spend time. Thursday our luck was bad, and we had what may be a record low day - we banded a total of three birds, all Dark-eyed Juncos (1 Slate-colored, 1 Oregon, 1 undetermined). Today, Friday, our luck was better. A flock of Juncos came through near the front nets early on, and then we got part of a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers at one of our far out nets later in the morning. We also caught our FOS (and possibly only) American Tree Sparrow. Tony Leukering, who ran the banding station for many years a gazillion years ago, used to say that we had to stay open until the ATSPs arrived. I guess we now can officially close on Sunday! Here's the breakdown of today's 17 new birds: Downy Woodpecker 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4 American Tree Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3 We will take down the station after banding on Sunday. Our slowest day of the season, with only 9 new birds. We got our first Flicker of the season today, the last (I think) of the common BIG birds that we look forward to catching every season. And our second Tennessee Warbler (We've only caught 7 total in the past 17 years). [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10-12-22
A very slow day gave us time to really appreciate the young, male Sharp-shinned Hawk we caught mid-morning. He must have been down at the nets looking for breakfast, although whichever songbird he was after escaped both him and the net. He was on the small side - wing, tail, weight - even for a male, but his talons were big and strong and ready to grab at anything within reach. Here's the 15 new birds captured today: Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, unknown 1 Song Sparrow 4 new, 1 banded previous year Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! On a calm weather day, birds visited our nets at a leisurely pace, with a few birds in each net run. We had one station rarity - a Marsh Wren - We've only caught 5 in the last 17 years. Also caught our first Robin of the season. (Robins are one of a few larger, common birds that we don't usually catch until the end of the season. We are now eagerly awaiting our first Flicker.) Here's the breakdown of the 38 new birds caught today: Downy Woodpecker 1 Marsh Wren 1 Hermit Thrush 3 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 15 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, unknown 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 2 new, 1 banded last year White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 4 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! Not a lot of birds today (only 18 new) but a couple of highlights: To me, the White-winged is by far the most handsome of the Dark-eyed Juncos, and we had a real beauty today. Biggest crowd pleaser was a Hairy Woodpecker. A visitor marveled that one ever confused it in the field with the Downy, given how big the bird and its beak look in the hand! Here's the breakdown of the 18 new birds: Hairy Woodpecker 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 European Starling 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 4 Dark-eyed Junco, White-winged 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! We could not open yesterday - cold, grey, windy - but today was lovely. Started out pretty slow, but picked up as the sun came out and warmed things up. Yellow-rumped Warblers and White-crowned Sparrows continued to dominate, plus we had several nice surprises, including I think our 3rd White-throated Sparrow and our 6th Rock Wren. But the big excitement today was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a FIRST EVER for this station (which has been running since 1987). Here's a breakdown of today's 35 new birds (33 banded today, 2 banded in prior years): Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 1, banded 2021 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Rock Wren 1 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler. Audubon's 12 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-throated Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 8 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! Fall is here - cold in the early morning and then warm but not hot by the time we are closing 5 hours later. Means sparrows early on and then Yellow-rumped Warblers on the last couple of runs. Based on conversations with visitors this morning, there were sunny skies in much of the Denver metro area but NOT at Barr Lake, where thick fog rolled in as we started to open nets and began lifting just as we started closing nets 5 hours later. Our concern that the fog would turn to mist led us to open only half the nets and we humans were underdressed and chilled. But the birds were frisky and carrying more fat than I think we've seen any morning this season. White-crowned Sparrows were "everywhere" and clearly dominated our captures. Here is a breakdown of the 33 new birds (there were also 12 recaps): Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Wilson's Warbler 3 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 16 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! Fire and rain and almost no birds was the story of yesterday. We arrived at the station to find that someone or something had started a fire on the wood platform where we process birds and do our education programs. Luckily the rare three days of moisture prevented the fire from causing too much damage, but the platform is unusable. If you visit, just walk down the steps from the platform (the damaged area is taped off) and you will find us set up down below. The same rain that likely prevented the fire from spreading has kept bird movement low. We were open for about three hours before the rain started again, and only caught 5 new birds and 5 recaps. Here are the 5 new ones: Hermit Thrush 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Hoping for a little more normal day tomorrow after our day off today! The "late afternoon showers" yesterday started in Brighton about 3 p.m. and did not end until after 6 a.m. this morning. Any birds that could leave yesterday did so, and apparently nothing new arrived. We banded just 10 new birds this morning, and caught 10 others that we had banded sometime in the last week. But we had a fair number of first time visitors today, who enjoyed learning the basics of warblers, sparrows and a few other species. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/27/22
We thought the Black-billed Magpie in the 8:40 run would be the bird of the day - big, beautiful, lots of personality, iridescent blues and purple in the sun. But then Colin came back a half hour later with a Northern Harrier, which pretty much blew us away. First ever caught at the banding station, it was chasing breakfast (a mouse) when he was instead flushed into the net. I understand there was considerable running to ensure its capture. (The mouse escaped.) Otherwise, lots of typical late September species; a total of 58 new birds today: Northern Harrier 1 Black-billed Magpie 1 House Wren 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 3 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 9 Wilson's Warbler 6 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 8 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 14 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! A moderate number of birds made for a perfect Saturday - our visitors got a good chance to really see each species we caught, and to compare/contrast different sparrows and warblers. We were rained out yesterday; today started cool and breezy but ended with an early close because it was very windy and quite warm. Interesting weather and an interesting mix of species - we caught 3 species that are rare for the station - a lovely adult Sage Thrasher (4th in 17 years), a Red-naped Sapsucker (5th in 17) and a Townsend's Solitaire (10th in 17). Also had our first junco. Here's the breakdown of the 48 new birds (also had a slew of recaps): Red-naped Sapsucker 1 Dusky Flycatcher 1 House Wren 1 Townsend's Solitaire 1 Sage Thrasher 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 12 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, probable intergrade 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 17 Green-tailed Towhee 4 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 Dark-eyed Junco, pink-sided 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! A slow day for mid-season, with only 22 new birds caught (plus 13 birds recaught that were banded earlier this season). Very weird day - banded 40 new birds today, half caught on the 10:30 net run. Which means we had an average of about 2 on each of the other runs today, so we spent most of the morning trying to stay awake to be ready if the big run came! That big run included 12 hatch year Chipping Sparrows (all still with streaked breasts), which was just part of a huge flock coming through the station area. Today was our busiest day so far this season - we banded 65 new birds, caught 2 more House Wrens that we had banded last year, and then caught 18 birds that were previously banded this season. Wilson's Warblers dominated, as they should for most of September, but we had our first Yellow-rumped Warblers today, almost all young and all Audubon's. (I thought it was early, but we seem to catch a few starting about now. Nine the first day is a lot.) We were rained out on Saturday (9/10) and we did a somewhat late start on Sunday (9/11) because it was still quite wet and also foggy. Slower and hotter. Really looking forward to a break in this weather! Closed all nets a bit early today because it was so steamy. We banded only 18 birds and caught 2 House Wrens banded last year: House Wren 2 new, 2 banded 2021 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 11 Lesser Goldfinch 1 (FOS, and only the 2nd one caught since 2015!) Picking up on a thread from Julie's e-mail about recaptures: I have not been listing our recaps - birds that we have banded this season and then recaught again. Our daily number of these has been between 10-15, which I believe is higher than what Julie is seeing, especially since she is catching more new birds most days. We really have no idea how many (or what percentage) hang around for a day or a week or longer. The amount of fat they have put on varies greatly. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/4/22
We were happy to spend our Labor Day Weekend Sunday with some of our favorite annual human visitors to the banding station! We also had some nice birds. Of special interest was a Black-throated Blue Warbler. This species is less of a rarity than it used to be - we've caught one each of the past three seasons. But it is one of the warbler species where the young female presents an interesting ID challenge, being neither black-throated nor blue! Then, we caught our first of season Warbling Vireo, a bird we had banded last year on September 9. We noticed that it had a bill deformity - the lower mandible was slightly too long, so the upper and lower parts of the bill did not fit together quite right. It apparently had overcome any obstacle that might have caused to its ability to get food! A good day, and a nice way to end our second week. Here's the breakdown of the 33 new birds: Mourning Dove 1 Western Wood-pewee 4 Warbling Vireo 1 return, banded 2021 (FOS) Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 4 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 13 Clay-colored Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 1 Black-headed Grosbeak 1 (FOS) If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! Yellows and Wilson's competed for top spot today, with the YEWAs winding down and the WIWAs still getting going. Star of the show was a hatch year Red-eyed Vireo. It was great to have Megan Miller, well known Denver area birder who started volunteering at the Chatfield Station when she was about 12, out banding with us the past couple of days, preparing to go to the Western Slope where she will be running our banding stations there (Ridgway, then Grand Junction) for the next 6 weeks starting Monday. Look for her to join Julie and me with her banding reports! Okay, the breakdown for today's 32 new birds: Mourning Dove 1 Western Wood-pewee 2 Hammond's Flycatcher 1 Red-eyed Vireo 1 FOS House Wren 2 Yellow Warbler 11 Townsend's Warbler 2 American Redstart 1 Wilson's Warbler 9 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 FOS If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 8/23/22
Hello CoBirders! The fall banding season at Barr Lake has begun! Weather permitting, we will be out at Barr 6 mornings a week for the next 9 weeks, monitoring the migratory songbirds passing through our area. We had a lovely first morning, catching a total of 68 birds - 63 new and 5 returns from prior seasons. Mostly summer residents, including 35 Yellow Warblers and 18 House Wrens. I think the Yellows are at their most beautiful at this time of year - most of the adults have completed their post-breeding molt and have perfect, bright new feathers - while the House Wrens are a ragtag crew - most in some stage of molt, replacing some combination of body, wing and/or tail feathers. Here's a breakdown of today's captures: Mourning Dove - 2 Traill's Flycatcher 1 (probably a Willow) Dusky Flycatcher 1 House Wren 17 new, 1 banded 2020 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 32 new, 1 banded 2021, 2 banded 2020 Common Yellowthroat 2 Brewer's Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 4 new, 1 banded 2018 (presumably has spent its life at Barr, but this is the first time it has been recaught.) [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/29/22
Our final day of the season included lots of human visitors and Yellow Warblers (7 banded today plus 9 that had been banded earlier this season). We caught our only true rarity of the season, a White-eyed Vireo, which we had at the same time as a Warbling Vireo which made for a great comparison. Here's the final 14 new birds of the season: Downy Woodpecker 1 Western Wood-Pewee 2 Warbling Vireo 1 White-eyed Vireo 1 Yellow Warbler 7 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 We then took down the station during an isolated thunderstorm - a brief downpour that left us muddy and thoroughly soaked. I cannot thank the stupendous Sunday volunteer crew enough for their energy and good humor that allowed us to successfully get the station down and everything packed away in record time in spite of the weather! In terms of numbers for the season, our total individual birds was about 570, which is below average (660) but well above the really dismal 2021 season (435). Another good sign is that most of our regular/common species started arriving on time (unlike last year when most species were late), suggesting that birds are more likely to get to their summer homes in time to have a successful breeding season. More detailed info to come when I've had a chance to enter and analyze the season's data! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/28/22
Another slow morning as we finish up the banding season; of the 16 birds caught for the first time this season, all could be breeding at Chatfield except for the Lincoln's Sparrow. Yellow Warblers led again, with 10 new, most of them second year females that are usually the last to arrive. We did catch both the male and female Cowbirds that have been around the station, presumably waiting for just the right moment to lay eggs in nests of Yellow Warblers; the male was banded in 2019. Here's the breakdown of todays 16 new birds: Western Wood-Pewee 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Yellow Warbler 10 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 banded 2019 Tomorrow is our last day! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/27/22
Activity continues to be slow, with 13 new, 1 new return from last year, and 11 birds that had already been caught this season for a total of 26 birds. As is typical in the final days of our Chatfield spring banding, Yellow Warblers dominated - 15 of the total birds today were Yellows. To me, these bright yellow birds, dashing around in the trees and bushes, really are spring at Chatfield! A slow-ish day, with only 17 new birds banded. Three Cedar Waxwings, side by side by side in the net, were a treat. A somewhat busier day than yesterday, but not as busy as I expected - I thought with the rain gone and the sun out we'd see a lot more activity. But, it was cold and the foliage was still damp for the first couple of hours; most of the activity was in the second half of the morning. Here's the breakdown of the 26 new birds today: Western Wood-Pewee 2 Dusky Flycatcher 1 Violet-green Swallow 1 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 6 Yellow Warbler 5 new, 1 banded 2016 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 Bullock's Oriole 1 Lesser Goldfinch 1 American Goldfinch 4 Our last week! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/24/22
We managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of banding in between the early morning mist and the mid-morning drizzle. The only migrants that seemed to be moving through were Swainson's Thrushes and Lincoln's Sparrows; the individuals we caught were carrying decent amounts of fat, which is a good sign after this bout of bad weather. I think this was the first morning this season where recaptures (18) outnumbered new bandings (11). All of the recaptures had been caught previously this season and most were exhibiting signs of breeding. Here is the breakdown of the 11 new birds: Swainson's Thrush 4 Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Bullock's Oriole 1 Our last week! I think the weekend time slots are sold out and we have several groups scheduled each of the remaining 3 weekdays. But if you are out birding, stop by! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/22/22
We had an interesting and wonder-filled day. After being shut out for 2 days due to the storm, we were initially just happy to be back out. Lots of broken branches and tamped down plants. It was cool but dry, with cloud cover all morning. We didn't have what I think of as a traditional fall-out, with huge numbers of birds flying about, searching for food. But the change in the weather and the continued post-storm cloud cover changed the composition of birds we caught - we had 7 new species for the season today, including 1 swallow and 4 flycatchers. Of the flycatchers, 2 were rar-ish - an Eastern Phoebe and a Gray Flycatcher. We also had our first Western Wood-Pewees; this is late for them, but with 6 today we are about back to normal for this time in the season. The swallows were all Violet-greens, and we caught 7 of them. Then there were the Red-eyed Vireos, the 6th new species for the season caught today. In the 15 year history of the station, we had caught 3; we caught that many today, including 1 of those earlier 3, a male banded in 2017. (Rob Raker has photographed that 2017 bird twice, once in 2020 and again this year, causing me great frustration, knowing he was around but evading our nets!) Anyway, I think we have a small but hardy group of REVIs breeding in the station area. The 7th new species for the season was also a new species for the station - a Western Bluebird. Bluebirds nest just west of the station, up in the brushy area between the station and Wadsworth. However, this is the first time one (a breeding male) has wandered east into one of our nets. So, total for the day was 38 new bandings, 4 new returns, and 15 previously caught this season for a total of 57 birds of 21 species. Here is the breakdown of the 38 new plus 4 new returns: Downy Woodpecker 1 return banded 2016 - this guy would have been the big news on most days this season - a breeding male that had not been recaptured until now. Western Wood-Pewee 6 FOS Gray Flycatcher 1 FOS Cordilleran Flycatcher 1 FOS Eastern Phoebe 1 FOS Warbling Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 2 new, 1 return banded 2017 FOS Violet-green Swallow 7 FOS House Wren 1 new, 1 banded 2021 Western Bluebird 1 FOS, first ever Swainson's Thrush 3 Gray Catbird 1 Yellow Warbler 5 new, 1 banded 2019 Wilson's Warbler 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Bullock's Oriole 4 We are open 6 mornings per week, closed on Mondays. Registration is required to visit on the weekends - there are three 1 hour sessions, starting at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. Go here <https://denveraudubon.org/events/> to register. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/19/22
A slightly busier day - out of the teens and into the 20's! Our most interesting captures today were American Redstarts. We have a small but hardy population that breed very close to the banding station. We caught the likely oldest female (banded 2019) on the 13th. Today we caught what I think of as the patriarch (banded 2017). He is in breeding condition (expanded cloaca) and was caught with an unbanded adult female. The third one caught today was a young female, caught in the same run in a nearby net. Glad to see these guys apparently doing well! The headline today was returns - 7 birds banded in prior seasons caught for the first time this year. Six were migrators returning to breed. The morning started nicely for early spring, and then things just stopped. An Audubon person said she saw a Cooper's Hawk, which could have been the cause.
