I bought these for the 2017 eclipse and will use them again for the eclipse next month: https://milehighastro.com/collections/solar-accessories/products/solar-filter-black-polymer?variant=44192509821187. Be sure you order the correct diameter for your binoculars. They have both text and a video explaining how to measure properly. You can order the same or similar solar filters from Amazon, but I prefer to support the local guys! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/20 and 10/21/23
As this unseasonably warm weather continues, banding remains very slow. Only 3 birds banded yesterday (10/20): Song Sparrow 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 2 Today was slightly better, with 10 new birds banded. We did have a nice return - we caught a Flicker that we banded as a hatch year in 2021. We don't catch very many Flickers and I can't remember ever catching one again, even though they are around the station every season. Here's today's breakdown: Red-shafted Flicker 1, banded 2021 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 4 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 American Goldfinch 1 Tomorrow is our last day; we will take down the station at the end of the morning. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/15/23
In these final days of fall banding, we expect lots of White-crowned Sparrows (which we are getting in normal numbers), Dark-eyed Juncos (not so much) and bigger birds. In the "bigger bird" category, today we added our 4th Blue Jay and our first Sharp-shinned Hawk. The Flickers were flying fairly low in a good sized flock; hope to catch them starting tomorrow. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/14/23
Banding during the solar eclipse.eerie..as the temperature dropped, the forest got totally quiet; even the ever-present Jay stopped calling. We all agreed it was a wonderful place to be as our world got strange for awhile... Okay, we did have a couple of surprises today, in addition to our White-crowned Sparrows (9 new, 5 recaps). Sparrow rarities for the banding station - we started the morning with a Swamp Sparrow (the 4th since 2016) and ended with a Savannah (the 10th since 2016). Both hatch year birds. Here's the total new birds for the day: Hermit Thrush 1 Savannah Sparrow 1 Swamp Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 9 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 1 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/12/23
(Note: this is the report for Thursday/yesterday. We did not open today due to high winds.) Most mornings in October, we've been catching the few birds we have in one or two runs, as a flock of mostly White-crowned Sparrows moves through. Usually those runs are first thing in the morning, but today it was mid-morning, just in time for a group of high schoolers, and included all of the following: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 3 And then, in the follow-up run, Charlie Chase brought back a bird in a bag and said to me, "This is really weird, but I have no idea what this bird is." (I'm thinking, if Charlie doesn't know, what are the chances any of the rest of us will..) We then greatly enjoyed one of the occasional thrills of fall banding - catching a rarish species (actually, the first one caught in 35 years at Barr) in somewhat unusual hatch year plumage, that leads to a fascinating struggle to find the right ID! We got to flycatcher right away, but were totally waylaid by the amount of and brightness of the yellow on the breast. Susan Rosine will be posting shortly a few photos of this really gorgeous Eastern Phoebe. If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Well, this is getting pretty boring: Cool when opening at 7 a.m., getting toasty by the time the students arrive mid-to-late morning. White-crowned Sparrows early, then nothing for 2 to 3 hours. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/5/23
There seemed to be lots more birds out on the lake this morning, but the passerine numbers did not increase due to the weather change (it was hat-and-glove weather early on for the first time this season). A total of 16 new birds. Only unusual captures were 4 Red-winged Blackbirds (we last caught one at the station in 2016). They were part of a BIG flock of males that hit net 2 - many others bounced out; we only caught the 4 because Charlie Chase was right there when it happened. Here's the 16 new: Rock Wren 1 American Robin 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 3 Wilson's Warbler 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Red-winged Blackbird 4 If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. After a better day yesterday, we were back to the 2023 normal today - just 8 birds banded. We were hampered by wind, which moved around the station in gusts; we finally gave up and closed early. We did manage to catch 2 of the Blue Jays that have been around the station all season, taunting us with their various vocalizations. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10/3/23
What would have been a fairly normal first day of October any other year felt like a blockbuster; with 40 new birds today, our biggest day in 2 weeks. More importantly, every Wilson's Warbler we caught was loaded up with fat, something we have not been seeing regularly this season. I'm guessing today's WIWAs came from someplace different than those that had arrived earlier this season. (The other birds seemed in good shape as well, but the lack of sufficient fat on WIWAs until today has been particularly worrisome.) We were disappointed (but not surprised - the weather report predicted it) to get winded out on Sunday; our Sunday crew came from all directions around the metro area and Barr Lake seemed to be the only spot where the wind was blowing hard; we simply could not have safely opened the nets. We were full up with visitors; I hope those unable to visit can find another time to come out this season! Here's the breakdown of today's 40 new bird (there was only 1 recap): Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 1 American Robin 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 13 Spotted Towhee 2 Green-tailed Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 11 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. As long as the heat continues, you are more likely to see birds if you come earlier in the morning. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/30/23
Continued slow (how many different ways can I say that?) Thanks to our wonderful visitors, who are interested in the broader conservation picture that emerges when we have a year like this and deeply appreciate the few birds they do get to see. (Today, we enjoyed the side-by-side comparisons of Swainson's and Hermit Thrushes, Gray Catbird and Brown Thrasher, and Song and Lincoln Sparrows.) Here's the breakdown of the 9 new birds today (we also had 8 recaps, which is how we got the catbird and thrasher together): House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 We will be banding tomorrow, unless the wind drives us away! We continue to limp along; only 10 birds banded today, and NO recaps from earlier in the season (VERY rare). The area was almost silent for the last 2 of our 5 hours - as soon as it warmed up. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/24/23
Things picked up a bit today (although of course well below normal for this time of year) with 13 new birds banded. Our first Hermit Thrushes arrived, about two weeks late. We also caught two species that we recognize as "fall is coming" birds - a Spotted Towhee and a Dark-eyed Junco. Here's the full breakdown: Rock Wren 1 House Wren 1 Hermit Thrush 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Dark-eyed Junco, pink-sided 1 Monday is our day off...time to recuperate from a crazy week - few birds, lots of great visitors, and complex discussions/activity/etc. around Barr Lake and the surrounding habitat. We believe we are headed in a good direction, while we remain alert to potential issues going forward. Again, thanks to all of you who have expressed your opinions - the publicity that has been generated has been the result of your sharing your concern with friends, family, media sources, etc. If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9, and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/23/23
Didn't think it would get worse than yesterday (3 birds banded), but it did. Grand total of 1 new bird, a Song Sparrow, only the second caught this season when we normally would have 25-35 of this resident species by now. Banding was hampered today by wind; the majority of the nets were closed by mid-morning and we ended the day a bit early. We caught 3 other birds that had been previously banded, all while the first of our two visitor groups was at the station. My hat is off to the second group of visitors, who were enthusiastic about the tour of the nets and the info we shared without seeing a single bird in the hand! If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Got a bit behind in my reporting, due to the craziness of the past few days, so this covers both Thursday and Friday. Thursday was slow and Friday (today) was pitiful...18 new birds on Thursday and only 3 today. I'm not sure there has been a day in mid-September when we only banded 3 new birds. Here is the breakdown for the 2 days: Thursday: House Wren 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 7 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 3 Friday: Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Not a lot of birds but a pretty nice variety today. Added another young, rarish warbler - a Tennessee - to this year's list. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/19/23
First off, thanks to Nathan for sounding the alarm about the changes in progress at Barr Lake. The increase in the water level completed last year has almost certainly contributed to the reduced number of summer and year-round residents that we have caught/documented this season. As Nathan notes, we are just becoming aware of the full extent of the habitat destruction that is happening right now, but it is likely to be VERY BAD for the birds that call Barr Lake home during some or all of the year. Our numbers today were fairly normal for this time of year; hoping this continues. Here's the list of today's 46 new birds: Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (very late!) Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 5 Yellow Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 8 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 20 Green-tailed Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 Back at the station tomorrow morning! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/17/23
This is a late report on our Sunday (9/18) activity. (Today, Monday, is our day off.) After our biggish day on Saturday, we were back down in the teens on Sunday. Only 19 new birds banded, but one of those was pretty interesting and exciting. It was a hatch year warbler that we could not identify. We searched Pyle (the banders guide) and Sibley's, then Susan Rosine tried Merlin (the Photo ID, not the Sound); Merlin suggested it was a Townsend's or a Yellow-rumped, which led us to looking for Townsend/Yellow-rumped hybrids, and...voila! See e-Bird entries of other TOWA/YRWA hybrids here: https://ebird.org/species/x00624?siteLanguage=en_ZA <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Febird.org%2Fspecies%2Fx00624%3FsiteLanguage%3Den_ZA=05%7C01%7C%7C8eb1c1e2da904cad272908dbb7c579b1%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C638305831003853184%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C=1o6Lgj5rXBmgFPefyGsse0rSfX0yazh8oyd1M%2BsCcJA%3D=0> See Susan's photos of our bird, along with a few of our bird and a full Townsend's caught at the same time for comparison, here: https://link.edgepilot.com/s/8f97ba31/8xUY0uCIUEafeghMeUc05A?u=https://ebird.org/checklist/S150151596 Here are the 19 new birds from Sunday: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, unidentified 2 Townsend's Warbler 1 Townsend's/Yellow-rumped Warbler hybrid 1 Wilson's Warbler 8 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 4 Back at the station tomorrow morning! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/16/23
Just read through the reports from our other three stations for today - What a wide variety of experiences we had today! The ~24 hours of drizzle and the first almost cold morning seem to have brought in some birds - we had only our second good day of the season. We banded 50 new birds, which included two semi-rarities - A Philadelphia Vireo and a Blackpoll Warbler. Coincidentally, the last Blackpoll was caught on 9/17/17 - almost exactly six years ago in another year when the lake water early in the season was really high. Here's the breakdown of the 50 new birds: Philadelphia Vireo 1 Rock Wren 1 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 9 Blackpoll Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 31 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. We were working on a new low for mid-September (having caught only 5 new birds) until the closing run when we picked up 2 Chipping Sparrows and a very feisty Hairy Woodpecker, for a total of 8 new birds to match yesterday: Hairy Woodpecker 1 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Each day, we are a bit more disappointed with the dearth of songbirds - both migrants and residents - at Barr Lake. Today was very quiet, and our new captures were in the single digits, with a somewhat odd assortment of species; only Wilson's was a recap. Here are the 8 new birds: White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Rock Wren 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Common Grackle 2 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/12/23
Our low numbers continue as we start Week 4 of the banding season. Caught our first American Goldfinches, late breeders - the female still had a brood patch, while the male was molting into winter plumage. Still have a few Yellow Warblers around, while the White-crowned Sparrows are starting to arrive. Here's today's 19 new birds: Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 11 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 American Goldfinch 2 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/10/23
I was hoping Saturday's "big" day of 51 new birds would be the beginning of a change, but our numbers on Sunday were pathetic - only 14 new birds. We also had a slew (12 birds) of recaptures, most of them young Wilson's that had been banded on Saturday and were not ready to continue their migration (little or no increase in fat from the day before). Here's a breakdown of the 14 new birds: Probable Blue-headed Vireo 1 (most interesting bird of the day; lots of discussion about whether to call it Blue-headed or go with Solitary. The data will go to the Bird Banding Lab with photos!) Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 7 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/9/23
The Barr Lake Birding Festival day turned out to be our biggest day of the season by far - first day with over 50 new birds (actually, the biggest day before today was 31 on 9/5). Also lots of human visitors! Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the festivities! Early migrants (warblers) and late (a White-crowned Sparrow), tiny birds (Ruby-crowned Kinglet) and big (Common Grackles). Lots to see and enjoy. Here's the breakdown of the 51 new birds; Warbling Vireo 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Yellow Warbler 3 Wilson's Warbler 31 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Common Grackle 3 If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Twenty-nine new birds, including 3 species that we usually catch annually but often only one a season - Swainson's Thrush, Western Tanager and Vesper Sparrow. Wilson's continue to dominate, but we remain well behind normal levels for that key species. Here are today's new birds: Western Wood-Pewee 2 House Wren 3 Swainson's Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 5 Yellow Warbler 1 Townsend's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 12 Western Tanager 1 Vesper Sparrow 1 Tomorrow (Saturday) is the Barr Lake Birding Festival. Lots of informational booths and activities for the whole family. Visits to the banding station will be scheduled at the Bird Conservancy booth rather than through our website. Sunday we return to our normal scheduling process for visitors. if you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/7/23
A strange morning - We caught 20 of today's 27 new birds (~75%) in 5 (20%) of our nets, and all in the 2nd half of the morning. These 5 nets are to the south/left as you walk out past the front nets into the smartweed (for those who know the station). This highly mixed flock (every species except the WEWP was caught there) hung around the area for our final 2 hours. Surprise of the morning was an early Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle). Here are the 27 new birds of the day: Western Wood-Pewee 1 Warbling Vireo 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 17 For anyone thinking about a last-minute birding outing tomorrow morning, our 7:30-8:30 visitor slot is part of a Denver Field Ornithologists field trip to Barr Lake, led by banding volunteer and great birding guide Charlie Chase. In addition to the visit to the banding station, there will be a walk around the area - think egrets, herons, shore birds, bald eagles, peregrine, etc. I believe there are a few spaces left - go to the DFO website to sign up! Except for tomorrow (and for that see above!), if you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. After a better day yesterday, we were disappointed to be back down in the teens today - only 16 new birds banded. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/3/23
Last day of week 2, and things were even slower than the earlier few days. I saw Norm Lewis last evening, birding at the Arsenal, and he commented that he had been reading "between the lines" in my posts.yep, it is the pits. I've been comparing this year with last year, with last year being a fairly good year. Today I went back and looked at the most recent two bad years (2021 and 2017). The number of birds caught in the first two weeks those years was almost identical - 383 new in 2021 and 390 in 2017. This year, we are at 184. The biggest difference is that in both 2021 and 2017 there were one or two bigger days at the very beginning, when we caught lots of Yellow Warblers and House Wrens - summer breeders at Barr. Those species are not around in normal numbers this year, and I think that speaks to the conditions at Barr specifically and probably the strange weather we've had throughout the metro area this year. Now we are into the time when we are monitoring birds migrating through; we will see what the next few weeks look like regarding those species. Okay here are the nine new birds caught yesterday: Western Wood-Pewee 1 House Wren 4 Gray Catbird 1 (FOS) Northern Waterthrush 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 Off today; back at it tomorrow/Tuesday. If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. At some level, I suppose it is interesting (and sad) to have so little to report! Another slow day at Barr, with 18 birds banded, no new species for the season. (Each day, we've had a handful of recaps - birds we have already banded this season. Today there were 7 of those, for a total of 25). Well, we weren't "hopping" like Chico, but we did feel like the Wilson migration began today. We captured 10 new ones, including our first adult (out of a total this season of 23). To compare this with last year, which was a good year in terms of numbers, by this time we had captured 109 WIWAs (9 of which were adults). Lots of thoughts about why... Even warmer than yesterday and continued slow. The birds of note today were the three Red-winged Blackbirds, all in the middle of body, wing and tail molt. Like the Grackles we caught earlier this week, RWBLs are rare captures at the station (these were the first since 2016), probably having something to do with the higher water levels later in the summer than usual. Hot and slow today. Finally caught our first Pewees..we've been hearing them daily, and normally start catching them right away; none til today, and then we had four. The other capture of note was a female Chipping Sparrow with a brood patch, still sporting a full rufous crown. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 8/27/23
Activity continues to be slow, but it seemed to work out about perfectly for the Sunday visitor groups - e.g. a different warbler on each run; folks got great looks and life history on Orange-Crowned, Yellow, Wilson's, then Common Yellowthroat. Thanks to everyone who visited for making it a fun Sunday morning! Here's the breakdown of the 17 new birds: Downy Woodpecker 1 Warbling Vireo 1 Black-capped Chickadee 3 House Wren 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 3 Common Yellowthroat 1 WIlson's Warbler 3 Common Grackle 2 (There are lots of Grackles hanging around which is unusual.these are the first we've caught at the banding station since 2015, and only the 5th & 6th in the past 17 years. Big, beautifully iridescent birds in the hand.) We are closed today, but looking forward to tomorrow - we finally have all the nets up! There is still space in the 7:30-8:30 visitor slot if you'd like to visit - Click here <https://camps.active.com/birdconservancyoftherockies#/seasonDashboard/sessions/3294337> to make a reservation. We have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, Aug 25 & 26
Rained out on 8/25 (Fri) after 1 run, catching 1 Warbling Vireo. I was hoping for a cooler and busier day on Saturday - got the cooler but not the more birds. Only banded 13 new birds, plus recaught 3 others banded earlier in the week. Here are the new ones: Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 8 Wilson's Warbler 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 A quick comparison with last year after four days (last year we had banded 203 birds, this year 83), and the big difference is in our summer residents - last year we had captured 115 Yellow Warblers, compared with 57 this year. And, for House Wrens, last year we had 48, and this year only 3. We attribute much of these reductions to the habitat - too much lake water up to high for too long. (I should note, as mentioned in previous posts, that we have only had part of the station open because of the high water, but the nets where we catch the majority of the Wrens and Yellows are the ones that we had up from the beginning this season.) The balance of the banding station is finally dry and we were able to get most of the rest of the nets up today. Should be operating at full capacity next week! Opportunities to visit include one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 8-24-23
Despite the heat and humidity, the wonderful volunteers and staff of the Thursday team persevered, getting the balance of the net lanes and trails cleared today. If (a big if) the weather cooperates, we will have the full banding station open by the end of the weekend. In the meantime, a slow day for birds, banding only 18: Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 13 Northern Waterthrush 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 Opportunities to visit include one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 8-23-23
A day much like yesterday - less than half our nets up and heat (although somewhat less humidity). Closed early again because of the weather. Also like yesterday, captures were dominated by Yellow Warblers, probably all summer residents that will soon begin their migration south. (We have caught 4 Yellows so far that were already banded, and they were all banded on opening day - August 23 - *last *year.) Here's today's breakdown: Downy Woodpecker 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 2 Yellow Warbler 18 new, 2 banded last year Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 We are getting the super weed whacker out tomorrow, and hope to get most of the rest of the nets up before the weekend. The ground is finally drying out! Hoping the weather cools down but the predicted rain waits until Monday when we are closed. Our opportunities to visit start Friday. There are one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 8-22-23
This, our first day of the 2023 banding season, was something of a mini-day, given continued high lake water, heat and humidity. We only have the front 11 nets up and the heat and humidity meant we had to close early. We had a steady stream of birds, mostly (and not surprisingly) Yellow Warblers, from around 6 a.m. when we opened until about 9. And then nothing. By 10 it was too hot and muggy to be banding birds (had there been any out and about) so we closed early. Eighteen of the 25 birds caught were Yellows, but the others were an interesting variety of one-on-a-kinds: Hammond's Flycatcher 1 Warbling Vireo 1 Rock Wren 1 House Wren 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 16 new, 2 banded last year Northern Waterthrush 1 Looks like the heat will break by Friday, in time for our first opportunity for folks to visit. We also hope to have a few more nets up. We are offering one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 31. 2023
Got a little behind, what with finishing up and taking down the station! May 31, the last day of our spring season, was another slow day; 16 new birds, all likely year-round or summer residents except for a couple of late Lincoln's Sparrows. Caught our third Western Wood-Pewee in as many days, the only three of the season - they arrived late. Major disappointment was not re-catching the "king" of the small Red-eyed Vireo clan who was banded in 2017; he was seen around the river nets on several occasions but seemed to be fully aware of their locations. Here's the break-down of the final 16 birds banded: Western Wood-pewee 1 Red-eyed Vireo 1 House Wren 1 Gray Catbird 1 Yellow Warbler 5 Common Yellowthroat 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 American Goldfinch 1 Key words describing the season - Weather, water, wildlife (think bobcat), wildfires and wind We were rained out more than usual - 5 days total. The trail from the station to the river became a stream and 2 of the 4 river nets were closed most of the season. The bobcat, which first showed up on May 9, plagued us for the balance of the season, leading to the permanent closure of 2 other nets. My heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteered extra hours to strategically guard the nets so that we could continue to run the station. And then there were the wildfires in Canada and the north winds that brought the smoke down to all of us on the front range - a health hazard for birds (and humans), and which likely delayed the migration of birds continuing north and may impact the breeding season for those that breed in western Canada. Our total of 641 individual birds caught was about average; it will probably be slightly above average when we take into account the number of nets and days open. Flycatcher and warbler numbers appear to continue to be below normal (perhaps not having fully recovered from the heat/fires/storms/etc. of 2020). More info to follow as data is processed! It is always great to see many of you at the station and to get your e-mails responding to these posts! We are already looking forward to fall at Barr Lake - we will be open for visitors starting Friday, August 25 - check here <https://www.birdconservancy.org/what-we-do/education/bird-banding/> for info about registering to visit! Another slow day, with 12 new birds and another 12 birds caught previously this season. It is now breeding season! We will band and then take down the station tomorrow. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 28, 2023
Another slow end of season day, banding only 8 birds (plus caught another 9 birds that had already been caught this year). Of note was our first of season (finally!) Western Wood-Pewee - our average per year is about 10, and we normally catch the first around the 5th of May. Flycatchers of all species have been in short supply this season. Here are our 8 newbies for today: Western Wood-Pewee 1 Yellow Warbler 4 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Song Sparrow 1 Closed tomorrow (Monday), then open Tuesday and Wednesday. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 26, 2023
Continued to catch more of our summer residents that are returning to breed another season. Of these species, the House Wrens are the furthest along in their breeding cycle.we've caught several females with brood patches, indicating that they are sitting on eggs. Most of the returning birds that we are catching now are birds that hatched last year - they are the later arrivals after the adults have returned to reclaim their breeding territories! Here's the breakdown of the 22 new birds caught today: House Wren 1 Gray Catbird 3 Cedar Waxwing 2 Yellow Warbler 7 new, 1 banded 2021 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 Song Sparrow 1 Bullock's Oriole 1 House Finch 1 (female with brood patch; I'm guessing the mate of the male we caught 10 days ago; these are the first 2 HOFIs caught at the station area, as opposed to at the feeders at the Nature Center, possibly ever) American Goldfinch 1 We are down to our last 4 days - open this weekend, then Tuesday and Wednesday next week Meredith McBurney Bander, Chatfield Banding Station Bird Conservancy of the Rockies -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 21, 2023
Whether the bad air quality from the fires or wind direction or something else, we had a slow day on Sunday/yesterday. We were kept busy because we had a slew of recaptures of birds already caught/banded this season - birds were out and about, just very little new - of the new captures, only the lone Swainson's Thrush was for certain just stopping to refuel. A relatively typical mid-spring day at Chatfield, with lots of summer residents coming back and some species that are migrating through. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 18. 2023
A busier and quite interesting day, with eight returns, two unusual species, and constantly changing weather. Closed for 30 minutes at 8:30 for rain, then had some sun, then barely got to our cars at the end of the morning before it started to pour. Unusual species - A second year female Lazuli Bunting and same age Northern Parula (the 4th ever caught at the station). Interesting return - My favorite return was an American Redstart who I think of as the patriarch of the small gang of breeding AMREs at Chatfield. He was first caught as a second year bird on 5/14/17 and has been caught most years since (as well as being photographed in the field by Rob Raker). As far as we know, he is the oldest of the group. Here's the breakdown of the 42 new, 8 returns (there were also 11 birds that were caught for the 2nd (or third.) time this season): Dusky Flycatcher 1 Warbling Vireo 1 (FOS) House Wren 2 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 11 new, 1 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 Northern Parula 1 Yellow Warbler 9 new, 2 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 American Redstart 1 new, 1 banded 2017 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 4 new, 1 banded 2022 Brewer's Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 4 Lazuli Bunting 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 banded 2022 Bullock's Oriole 2 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. Denver Audubon has scheduled one-hour time slots at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 for visitors on weekends; visit here <https://denveraudubon.org/events/> to register. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 17, 2023
Our first really nice, sunny spring morning in a week or so. We enjoyed being out, even though the numbers continued low and we are still watching constantly for the bobcat. Most of the birds that we are catching are summer residents/Chatfield breeders as opposed to migrants passing through. Here are today's new birds: House Wren 3 Gray Catbird 4 Yellow Warbler 7 new, 1 banded 2021 MacGillivray's Warbler 2 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 2 Bullock's Oriole 1 banded 2022 (FOS) House Finch 1 (don't ask; I don't know; we *NEVER* catch them at this station!) American Goldfinch 1 We will be open Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through the end of May. I'm sorry to say we didn't even get a taste of the wonderfully wild banding activity at Chico! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 13, 2023
After two days of rain, we anticipated a busy morning yesterday, if not with migrants passing through then our summer residents out feeding. But it was pretty quiet, with just 24 new birds caught. There was a nice variety, so it was a good learning experience for our visitors from Denver Audubon's Beginning Birder class. Lots of water in some areas of the station; several of the river nets could not be opened because the water was so high. And special thanks to the volunteers who added a day to help convince the bobcat to go elsewhere! (We did not see him/her.) Here's the breakdown: Least Flycatcher 2 Hammond's Flycatcher 2 Dusky Flycatcher 1 (FOS) House Wren 2 Gray Catbird 1 new, 1 banded 2021, recaught 2022 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 (of the 22 YEWAs caught to date, 12 were already banded. All but 1 of the 22 were adults.) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 Green-tailed Towhee 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Red-winged Blackbird 1 We are rained out today, closed on Monday. Hope to be back out on Tuesday! Denver Audubon has scheduled one-hour time slots at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 for visitors on weekends; visit here <https://denveraudubon.org/events/> to register. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 10, 2023
We had a great day, considering we were plagued by drizzle, that required a quick mid-morning close, and a bobcat, which forced us to close some nets and closely monitor all others. Caught 56 new birds. Number 1 highlight was our 106th species - a PALM WARBLER - on our first run of the day. Then lots of first of season birds (see notes in list below), including unusual for us captures - a Plumbeous Vireo and a bunch of Spizella Sparrows. Here's the breakdown: Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Western Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Plumbeous Vireo 1 (FOS) Red-eyed Vireo 1 (FOS) Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 9 Gray Catbird 4 new, 1 banded 2021 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 new, 1 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021 Western Palm Warbler 1 (First ever!) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Common Yellowthroat 2 new, 1 banded 2022 Yellow-breasted Chat 3 Spotted Towhee 1 Green-tailed Towhee 4 Chipping Sparrow 2 (FOS) Clay-colored Sparrow 2 (FOS) Brewer's Sparrow 13 (FOS) We will be open Tues through Sun, weather permitting, through May 31. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - May 4, 2023
We got a late start today due to a drizzle that started when we arrived and lasted for about an hour. But then we opened and had a very nice day, sharing our birds with Christy Carello's Metro State College Ornithology class. Note below that our first three Yellows of the season were all banded by us in prior years! Here a breakdown of the 36 new captures today: Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 4 American Robin 1 (FOS - they are around the station singing every day, but this is the first to come to a net) Gray Catbird 1 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Virginia's Warbler 1 (FOS) Yellow Warbler 2 banded in 2021, 1 banded in 2019 (FOS) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 10 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 3 Spotted Towhee 1 banded in 2017 (the oldest bird caught so far this season) White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 We will be banding mornings Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Mondays) through May 31. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Chatfield Banding Station - Week One Report
Hi Birders! This is my first report on spring banding at Chatfield – We started banding on Tuesday, April 25; this report covers our first week. I’ll be reporting on a daily basis moving forward, for the next four weeks. This first week, as usual, was fairly slow; migration is just getting started. We caught some early migrants that are coming through right on schedule – House Wrens, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Lincoln’s Sparrows, even a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Then there were White-crowned Sparrows that most likely wintered at Chatfield and had lots of fat stored up for their relatively short migration back to their breeding grounds. The balance were birds that likely live at Chatfield year-round. Our one rarish bird of the week was an Eastern Phoebe; we’ve only caught three others in the history of the station, but it is becoming a regular in the Chatfield-Waterton area. Here’s the break-down for the 69 new and 7 returns caught in Week One: Eastern Phoebe 1 Black-capped Chickadee 9 new, 3 banded 2022, 1 banded 2021, 1 banded 2019 as an adult, so at least 5 years old. Bushtit 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 (caught together) House Wren 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 13 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon’s 10 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 2 (Adult male with strong Myrtle face pattern but yellow throat) Spotted Towhee 5 new, 1 banded 2022 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 4 new, 1 banded 2018 Lincoln’s Sparrow 5 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel’s 9 American Goldfinch 1 We will be banding mornings Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Mondays) through May 31. Denver Audubon has scheduled one-hour time slots at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 for visitors on weekends; visit here <https://denveraudubon.org/events/> to register. [cobirds] Interested in monitoring breeding Bald Eagles?!
Hi All, Bird Conservancy annually monitors nesting Bald Eagles along the Front Range, gathering important data needed to protect this important species. In 2020, Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched a four-year study to help understand current population trends, habitat use and impacts of human disturbance on Bald Eagles along Colorado’s densely populated Front Range, and BCR is partnering with them to help gather the data they need to make good decisions. BCR is organizing for the 2023 monitoring season; it starts with training, via zoom, on Saturday, January 21. Volunteers are then assigned nest(s) to monitor; the goal is once a week for an hour from February through June. (We know this is usually not possible, and many nests have more than one observer assigned.) If you are interested, please send me an e-mail and I will provide more detailed information! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10-23-22
Our final day of banding for 2022 was both slow and very exciting. Only nine birds banded on a day that ended early due to wind. But one of those nine was a Northern Shrike, and that pretty much made up for the lack of activity. None of us had ever seen one that "up close", and we marveled at the shape interesting shape of its bill - we looked carefully but avoided contact! (It appears that this is likely the 2nd ever caught at the banding station, the other one being caught on Nov 6, 1988!) So, here's the final nine for the season: Northern Shrike 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 Lots of data to enter and analysis to be done; I'll be back with a report relatively soon, I hope! We had a good season, with just over 1800 individual birds caught, well above the 1100 caught in our dismal season last year. We'll see how it looks when we factor in net hours. My thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers and staff who make it possible to run 25 nets 6 mornings a week for 9 weeks in order to monitor the songbirds coming through our area each fall. Also, thanks to all our visitors as well as those of you who read and comment on the daily posts! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report October 20 & 21
As we move later into fall, migration slows way down, as most migratory species have passed through. In addition to catching a few of those late migrants, we continue to catch some year-round residents as well as birds that will over-winter at Barr. Some of the captures right now depend on luck - are our nets in locations where the birds that move in tight flocks during the day happen to decide to spend time. Thursday our luck was bad, and we had what may be a record low day - we banded a total of three birds, all Dark-eyed Juncos (1 Slate-colored, 1 Oregon, 1 undetermined). Today, Friday, our luck was better. A flock of Juncos came through near the front nets early on, and then we got part of a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers at one of our far out nets later in the morning. We also caught our FOS (and possibly only) American Tree Sparrow. Tony Leukering, who ran the banding station for many years a gazillion years ago, used to say that we had to stay open until the ATSPs arrived. I guess we now can officially close on Sunday! Here's the breakdown of today's 17 new birds: Downy Woodpecker 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4 American Tree Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3 We will take down the station after banding on Sunday. Our slowest day of the season, with only 9 new birds. Luckily, we caught 14 recaps from earlier this season so we had a variety of interesting species to share with our great mix of visitors - A Girl Scout troop, a group of neighbors brought out by a bird enthusiast, several parents brought out by their young children. We got our first Flicker of the season today, the last (I think) of the common BIG birds that we look forward to catching every season. And our second Tennessee Warbler (We've only caught 7 total in the past 17 years). But overall a pretty slow morning, with only 13 birds banded: Northern Flicker, Red-shafted 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Tennessee Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 5 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! A very slow day gave us time to really appreciate the young, male Sharp-shinned Hawk we caught mid-morning. He must have been down at the nets looking for breakfast, although whichever songbird he was after escaped both him and the net. He was on the small side - wing, tail, weight - even for a male, but his talons were big and strong and ready to grab at anything within reach. On a calm weather day, birds visited our nets at a leisurely pace, with a few birds in each net run. We had one station rarity - a Marsh Wren - We've only caught 5 in the last 17 years. Also caught our first Robin of the season. (Robins are one of a few larger, common birds that we don't usually catch until the end of the season. We are now eagerly awaiting our first Flicker.) Not a lot of birds today (only 18 new) but a couple of highlights: To me, the White-winged is by far the most handsome of the Dark-eyed Juncos, and we had a real beauty today. Biggest crowd pleaser was a Hairy Woodpecker. A visitor marveled that one ever confused it in the field with the Downy, given how big the bird and its beak look in the hand! We could not open yesterday - cold, grey, windy - but today was lovely. Started out pretty slow, but picked up as the sun came out and warmed things up. Yellow-rumped Warblers and White-crowned Sparrows continued to dominate, plus we had several nice surprises, including I think our 3rd White-throated Sparrow and our 6th Rock Wren. But the big excitement today was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a FIRST EVER for this station (which has been running since 1987). Based on conversations with visitors this morning, there were sunny skies in much of the Denver metro area but NOT at Barr Lake, where thick fog rolled in as we started to open nets and began lifting just as we started closing nets 5 hours later. Our concern that the fog would turn to mist led us to open only half the nets and we humans were underdressed and chilled. But the birds were frisky and carrying more fat than I think we've seen any morning this season. White-crowned Sparrows were "everywhere" and clearly dominated our captures. Here is a breakdown of the 33 new birds (there were also 12 recaps): Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Wilson's Warbler 3 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 16 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10-2-22
Fire and rain and almost no birds was the story of yesterday. We arrived at the station to find that someone or something had started a fire on the wood platform where we process birds and do our education programs. Luckily the rare three days of moisture prevented the fire from causing too much damage, but the platform is unusable. If you visit, just walk down the steps from the platform (the damaged area is taped off) and you will find us set up down below. The same rain that likely prevented the fire from spreading has kept bird movement low. We were open for about three hours before the rain started again, and only caught 5 new birds and 5 recaps. Here are the 5 new ones: Hermit Thrush 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 Hoping for a little more normal day tomorrow after our day off today! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 10-1-22
The "late afternoon showers" yesterday started in Brighton about 3 p.m. and did not end until after 6 a.m. this morning. Any birds that could leave yesterday did so, and apparently nothing new arrived. We banded just 10 new birds this morning, and caught 10 others that we had banded sometime in the last week. But we had a fair number of first time visitors today, who enjoyed learning the basics of warblers, sparrows and a few other species. Here are today's 10 new: Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 3 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! Hi David, and thanks for asking! We do produce summary data and we should do a better job of sharing that as well as our day-to-day reports during the season. We thought the Black-billed Magpie in the 8:40 run would be the bird of the day - big, beautiful, lots of personality, iridescent blues and purple in the sun. But then Colin came back a half hour later with a Northern Harrier, which pretty much blew us away. First ever caught at the banding station, it was chasing breakfast (a mouse) when he was instead flushed into the net. I understand there was considerable running to ensure its capture. (The mouse escaped.) Otherwise, lots of typical late September species; a total of 58 new birds today: Northern Harrier 1 Black-billed Magpie 1 House Wren 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 3 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 9 Wilson's Warbler 6 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 8 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 14 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 If you'd like to enjoy fall birds up close and personal, please come visit! We were rained out yesterday; today started cool and breezy but ended with an early close because it was very windy and quite warm. Interesting weather and an interesting mix of species - we caught 3 species that are rare for the station - a lovely adult Sage Thrasher (4th in 17 years), a Red-naped Sapsucker (5th in 17) and a Townsend's Solitaire (10th in 17).
