vi vi vi is the number of the beast for good reason.

HiFiBerry DIGI2 Pro works just fine, even on my old RPi2.

Warning: if you're interested in doing some processing (eg. parametric
EQ for room correction), don't get their DSP add-on board. Its filtering
algorithms create a weird low level rumbling. (I suppose they might have
fixed it since my bad experience). I do DRC by running through SOX on
LMS, which works well and requires no hardware purchase.

Do you have replaygain switched on, and if so is it set to track gain?
A sudden change in replaygain setting on track transition could cause a

I know you said you didn't want to split things up and don't want to

Given that RPis are basically unobtainable from official sources, if you
did put your RPi4 on eBay, you'd probably get about £80 for it just by

OK, you make some good points and have convinced me.
Setting up things like DNS servers and gateways in a central place is of
course easier.
I hadn't really considered that because I just run a simple home network
and have never considered changing my subnet or DNS.
The only issue I see with reservations is the need to discover the MAC
addresses of all the devices, but I suppose that's not too onerous.

I'm sure there must be some good reason why such a complex facility
exists, but I can't see what's wrong with just giving those devices a
static IP so they don't even need to talk to a DHCP server.

Are there devices which can ONLY get an IP from DHCP? I can
sort of believe maybe some manufacturers might treat their customers
with that much contempt

I seriously doubt it.
The consumers you're talking about buy into high-end buds and hi-res
streaming because they believe it's what they should do, but they
wouldn't recognise good sound quality if it smacked them in the mouth.
Indeed, they are now so used to hypercompressed trash that it's what
they think good sound quality is.
Even today's crop of young mastering engineers seem to have drunk the

I'm sorry, but who the hell allows their DHCP server to hand out
addresses in the same range as the static addresses they use? If you
know how to reserve IP addresses based on MAC address, you must be
capable of restricting the DHCP pool.

Back to the original topic regarding Neil Young's reaction to Joe
Regan.

What's just happened is a good demonstration of why people shouldn't
rely on streaming services as their music source. Anyone who gets their
music from Spotify and likes to listen to Neil Young (and maybe Joni
Mitchell soon) is hosed. Unless you have the music in your possession,
there's no telling when it might just disappear.

My LMS runs on a Pi3. It sits there working, no maintenance, updates
don't happen at all because they don't need to happen. It's still
running piCorePlayer version 4.something, because it does what's
required, isn't broken and therefore doesn't need fixing. I've never
understood why people feel the need to constantly update perfectly
working systems.

PS. The Pi3 has more than enough grunt to run DRC. Peak CPU hits about
30% when new songs start, and once they're playing CPU usage is about 3%

While the Polyvection players look decent value, I can't see how the
price of the CORE32 server can be justified. Setting up piCorePlayer as
a LMS server on a RPi really is child's play, and can be done for less
than half the cost of a CORE32.

So I guess you're experimenting with the Pi4 as a player in addition to
using it as your LMS server?

I've never used a Pi4 as a player, but I did once use an old Pi1 as a
player, and can confirm that the 3.5mm output on that was line level.
I can't see any reason why they'd change the purpose of the 3.5mm output

The general view is that you're imagining it.

LMS streams the data over TCP/IP.
The receiving player controls how the data is decoded and clocked.
Nothing can affect the timing before then, including any noise on the
data lines - if you're wondering about noise affecting jitter.

UNLESS...
Noise (either electrical and/or radiated EMI) manages to affect the
analogue stages of whatever eventually turns the digital data into
audio.
Which in your case would be the Beresford DAC. I guess there is a
vanishingly small possibility that its analogue stages might get
affected by power line noise and/or EMI, and the Pi4 would have
different noise characteristics to the Windows PC.

But the difference you hear is overwhelmingly more likely to be due to
your expectations and/or state of mind. You've just installed a new toy
that you're pleased with - you are bound to be in a happy place and as a
result things sound nice.

Yes, I understand the desire to move away from your old Windows PC. My
comment was in reference to you suggesting that you might run LMS on
your wife's laptop. That would be asking for trouble if she uses it as a
general purpose machine. Get a RPi (if you can find one in stock
anywhere) and stick piCorePlayer on it.

The Meridian M6s that replaced them are surprisingly listenable. Nowhere
near as capable, of course, but they do sound pretty damn good.

Ok now I understand that you're using Chromecast devices as virtual
squeezeboxes.
What's confusing me is why you want to change anything. What's wrong
with your current Beresford DAC?

Regarding moving the LMS server, I would strongly recommend not running
it on a Windows machine that's also being used for other general purpose
stuff.
If you go the piCorePlayer route, I can tell you that you don't need a
RPi4 - it works just fine on a RPi3. Lack of USB3 for the disk isn't an
issue - audio data rates are so micky-mouse that USB2 is plenty fast
enough. My RPi3 LMS server is even running some SOX filters for DRC and
the CPU is nowhere close to maxed out - typically around the 25% mark.

If you've got a decent DAC with multiple inputs, why not just feed the
output of your Squeezebox player into one input and the TV into another?
Most modern TVs have an optical output.

I don't really understand why any Chromecast devices need to be involved
- can you explain their purpose?

Sorry, but I've never used the delay option with SOX, so I don't have
direct experience with how it might behave. Nor am I keen on fiddling
around with my own custom-convert file to try it out, so I'm afraid
you'll have to conduct your own experiments.

multi-threaded just tells SOX to use multiple cores to do its
processing, if the CPU you're using has them, which might speed up
processing a touch. You don't have to include that option.

no-clobber causes SOX to prompt before overwriting an output file, which
is generally a good option to include. But in the context of using it
with LMS, it's pretty much redundant. Can't hurt to include it, though.

I don't think the C-3PO plugin is relevant. I run SOX in a
custom-convert to do room correction EQ and the C-3PO plugin is not
active in my LMS (which is running in pCP on a RPi3).

You're right that you don't need to replicate the standard convert.conf
in your custom-convert - it just needs to override the standard stuff
for the particular file types and players of interest. I'd say your file
should look something like:

Code:

  flc flc *
  [sox] -q --multi-threaded --no-clobber -t flac $FILE$ -t flac - delay 0 0.003

This is assuming your source files are FLAC. If you use some other
format, you'd need to change the file type, eg. for MP3:

Code:

  mp3 flc *
  [sox] -q --multi-threaded --no-clobber -t mp3 $FILE$ -t flac - delay 0 0.003

You make a good point about whether SOX will accept 0.003 to represent
3ms of delay, and the issue of different sample rates if you instead
specify samples.
I guess you'll just have to experiment.

One last comment: when I tried loading a custom-convert using pCP's
upload facility, it kept complaining that the file was the wrong format,
so I had to manually set it up with an editor while SSH'd into the
machine.

SOX is available in pCP and has a *delay* option that will allow you to
specify different delays for different channels.
Excerpt from the SOX man page:

Code:

  delay {length}
Delay one or more audio channels. length can specify a time or, if appended
with an 's', a number of samples.
Do not specify both time and samples delays in the same command.
For example, delay 1.5 0 0.5 delays the first channel by 1.5 seconds, the
third channel by 0.5 seconds,
and leaves the second channel (and any other channels that may be present)
un-delayed.

You'll need to set up a custom-convert file in LMS, but that's pretty
straightfoward.

Re: [slim] Looking for advice on Rasperry Pi piCore Player set up

2021-07-10 Thread cliveb

To the OP:
It's not clear from your photos whether you got network access when
booting the Pi with Raspbian.
I see the words "reached target network", but don't see the expected "IP
address is ..." message.

Here's what I'd do:
1. Connect the Pi to your monitor, to your router with an ethernet
cable, and connect a USB keyboard to the Pi.
2. Boot the Pi using Raspbian.
3. Log in using the keyboard. User name is *pi*, password is
*raspberry*
4. Run the command *ifconfig*. If you see "inet addr" listed for eth0
(probably 192.168.x.y, where x is likely to be 0 or 1, but could be
different, and y will be a number between 1 and 254), then you are
connected to a network and the Pi's ethernet port hardware is NOT
faulty.
5. You could also try this command: *ping google.com*. If you get
replies, your network is working fine and has access to the internet.
(The ping command will keep going; you can stop it by typing Ctrl+C).

You can then try exactly the same thing but boot the Pi using
piCorePlayer. Log in with username *tc* and password *piCore*

If you discover that the Pi has network access using Raspbian but not
with piCorePlayer, then I'm baffled - that really wouldn't make sense.

[slim] Selling my beloved Transporter

2021-06-27 Thread cliveb

I hope that this doesn't break any forum rules, but this is just a
heads-up that I'm selling my Transporter. It's an original Slim Devices
branded one, with transnav knob.

I recently moved and had to part with my ATC active monitors which
didn't fit in the new house :-(
They've been replaced by Meridian actives with digital inputs, so I no
longer need the TP's fabulous balanced analogue output.
I figured it would make sense to sell it to someone who could make
better use of it.

Here's a link to the eBay auction:

Thanks Peter, but as you'll see from my post #24, I now have it
working.
The problem was never intercepting and dealing with the power status
change - it was figuring out how to install the plugin so it was usable
on any kind of player.

Incidentally, I suspect that my desire to control the Meridian 218 is
pretty niche and therefore not worth the effort to release it as a 3rd
party plugin. (There's a whole heap of extra functionality that would be
needed to handle all the possile use cases that 218 owners might want).

But if anyone else wants it, drop me a PM and I can send you the code. I
think it should also work with a Meridian Audio Core 200 as that uses
the same protocol.

Got home from being out for the afternoon to see your very quick

Success!
It was as simple as adding those extra lines into my plugin.
I will now start looking at adding the additional configuration settings
that it ought to have, and remove the hard-coded stuff.

Thank you so much for your assistance, much appreciated.

BTW, it's no problem for me to copy files to the pCP server using Samba,
and restarting LMS is no hassle. I'm not planning to be a regular plugin
developer, so this is all pretty much a one-off.

On my LMS server (running on piCorePlayer, so the OS is piCore Linux),
WebUI/Settings/Information lists these plugin folders:
/USR/LOCAL/SLIMSERVER/CACHE/INSTALLEDPLUGINS/PLUGINS,
/USR/LOCAL/SLIMSERVER/PLUGINS, /USR/LOCAL/SLIMSERVER/CACHE/PLUGINS

So I presume that I should put my plugin into
*/usr/local/slimserver/Plugins* - but no such folder exists.

Is it that LMS is prepared to use plugins if the folder happens to be
there, but that the folder may not exist?
Can I just create that folder and put my plugin there? (I don't want to
just try it without some reassurance, in case it breaks LMS).

OK, I've zipped up what I've created and attached it here.
I placed all of these files in the /usr/local/slimserver/Cache/Plugins
directory.
After restarting LMS, here's what happens:
- The plugins tab on the LMS web interface shows the new plugin as
active, and it has a Settings link
- Clicking the Settings link results in *404 Not Found:
plugins/Extensions/settings/plugins/M218/settings/player.html*
- The plugin is available on a SB3 via the Extras menu, and I can
enable/disable it as hoped
- When it's enabled on the SB3, it works as expected

I think if someone can help me figure out how to integrate the
player.html and Settings.pm files, I may have a chance of enabling the
plugin on other players (eg. SBR, Squeezelite, etc)

Re: [slim] LMS Plugin Development

2021-06-08 Thread cliveb

OK, making progress. I decided that all I really needed to do was switch
the Meridian 218 on & off with the Squeezebox player, so used Felix's
PowerSwitchII as a starting point.

I put my plugin into /usr/local/slimserver/Cache/Plugins, restarted LMS,
and the new plugin is listed as installed in the web interface Plugins
tab.
I was able to activate it on an SB3 I have via the Extras menu, and it
works - turns the Merdian 218 on & off as expected.

BUT... I want to use it with a SBR, and I can't see how it can be
activated on that. (Presumably I'd have the same issue if I wanted to
use it on a Squeezelite player).

(Note: I had already removed the code inherited from PowerSwitchII that
checks whether the player is a Transporter or SB2/3, but I don't think
that's relevant - I haven't even got as far as activating the plugin on
the SBR).

My next thought was that maybe the way PowerSwitchII is configured uses
some kind of legacy mechanism only available on the older players with a
display.

So I took a look at the PowerSave plugin (which I already have active on
the SBR) and noticed that it includes a PLAYER.HTML file that presents
the various options in the LMS Settings web interface, and a SETTINGS.PM
file that looks like it processes the settings selected in the
PLAYER.HTML page. So I built a simple equivalent and placed it with the
rest of my plugin. After restarting LMS, a SETTINGS option appeared next
to my new plugin, but clicking it results in:

Code:

404 Not Found: plugins/Extensions/settings/plugins/M218/settings/player.html

I had a poke around, but as far as I can see none of the directories on
the server called Extensions have anything to do with PowerSave in
them.

I tried moving my new plugin to
/usr/local/slimserver/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins (which is where
PowerSave was installed), but that didn't help.

So I'm kind of stuck at this point. There seem to be so many possible
places where the various files might belong. Can anyone can give some
more guidance?

If it's relevant, I'm using piCorePlayer as my server, running LMS 7.9.2

I spent a bit of time writing a simple Android app to try out the
Meridian protocol, hence the delay in following up.

But I'm now ready to start developing the LMS plugin, and I do have a
question:

In the INSTALL.XML file for various plugins, I see an attribute
containing a rather long hex number.
What is the significance of this, and how do I generate an appropriate

Ah, right. Thanks for the heads up.

What I want to do is turn the Meridian speakers on & off when the player
is turned on & off, and adjust their volume.
So I think IR Blaster would be the place to start.
The difference is that the control signals are sent via TCP over the
network, rather than via an IR emitter.

Could be a dying power supply. When the voltage starts dropping,
squeezeboxes can behave in all sorts of weird ways. Dead PSUs are one of
the commonest failures.
(Note that measuring the PSU voltage without any load won't tell you

OK, I thought you might have been referring to things like altering

mftech wrote:
> Typically this a feature handle outside the DAC chip.
Yes, but the Transporter is more than a DAC. It does a lot of processing
in the Xilinx PGA.

We know that its firmware can decode SPDIF, Toslink and AES/EBU (because
its digital inputs work).
And we know that its firmware can encode SPDIF, Toslink and AES/EBU
(because its digital outputs work).
We even know that its effects loop can send a signal out of the digital
outputs and read it back in through the digital inputs - so having both
running simultaneously is possible.

So IN PRINCIPLE, it should be straightforward to receive a signal
through a digital input and send it out to the digital outputs.
I appreciate that development of the TP's firmware has now stopped so
this will never happen.
I just find it surprising that (a) it wasn't included as standard, and
(b) it was never requested as an enhancement during the time when
updates were still being made.

Shame. I don't want transcoding - just have whatever digital input is

[slim] Transporter digital signal transfer question

As an experiment I tried feeding my TV's toslink output into the
Transporter's optical input and expected the signal to appear at the
coax digital output.
It didn't.
(It DOES appear at the analogue outputs, so it's not that the toslink
input isn't working).

I had (perhaps naively) assumed that the TP would transfer any digital
input signal to its digital outputs, but that seems not to be the case.
Unless there's some configuration setting I've missed. Can anyone help?

Thinking about it a bit more, you're probably right. Even if there's a
way to select which input is used, chances are that is the input which
would get fed to to analogue outputs. But still worth asking AE about
it.

I reckon you should open up the speaker with the electronics and see if
there's an easy way to swap the connections between amps and drive

Sorry, I misunderstood your original post. Of course swapping the
speakers will make the channels come out the wrong side.

I notice the HD6 has RCA analogue inputs and outputs, presumably as some
kind of passthrough facility.
I wonder if a toslink signal fed in appears at the analogue outputs, and
if so, whether you could feed those analogue outputs back into the
analogue inputs and reverse the channels that way? In other words, the
HD6's DAC might always be active, even if you've selected to use the
analogue inputs. Probably not, but it might be worth an experiment.

Something else you could try would be to open up the master speaker (I
see screws on the backplate in a picture) and see if the connections
between the internal amps and speakers are easily swappable - they may
well be push-on spade connectors that you could easily switch round.

How can swapping the speakers mess with the imaging given that their

Out of curiousity (no pun intended) I had a look at their website. These

If Curious publicise that their cable doesn't work on a RPi, it might
save some PCP users falling for their snake oil claims.

Re: [slim] SB3: Switch-Off S/PDIF when SB3 in stand-by

2021-01-03 Thread cliveb

If you're prepared to use a trigger signal from the player to control
the power to your speakers (eg. using a relay), then you could use the
PowerSwitch plugin on the SB3 - this puts out a 3V DC signal on the
heaphone socket when the player is on.
piCorePlayer has a power on/off GPIO control facility, which can deliver
a 3.3V DC signal on the GPIO pin of your choice when the player is on.
If you use a DIGI+ HAT then you'd have to choose a GPIO pin that it
doesn't use and passes through.

Should I interpret your comment to mean that perhaps the fact 7.0.0

Re: [slim] Installing extra packages on piCorePlayer

2020-12-26 Thread cliveb

Just been doing a few more experiments.

Using piCorePlayer 6.1.0, I finally discovered that the critical step is
to change the fourth option on the ALSA output setting to 0. After
restarting squeezelite, everything just works, including the GPIO
toggling. No reboot required. Once I discovered this, a quick search of
the forums found a few threads where Paul had stated that mmap=1 doesn't
work on the Pi4B in 64 bit mode. I didn't even realise that 6.1.0 was 64
bit. (Or perhaps it is 32 bit and mmap=1 doesn't work on a Pi4B in any
mode?).

Can anyone explain what the mmap option actually does?
Weird that an audio output setting affects the GPIO control.

Anyhow, I then tried out piCorePlayer 7.0.0.
Both versions (standard - which I presume is 32 bit, and 64 bit) worked
straight out of the box, even with mmap set to 1. Setting the GPIO power
on/off worked without any issue. So I guess whatever the issue was with
mmap has been resolved in Squeezelite 1.9.8 (piCorePlayer 6.1.0 shows
that it uses Squeezelite 1.9.6).

But it is interesting to note that the non-working mmap setting seems to
affect other apparently unrelated subsystems - perhaps not just the GPIO
control. Presumably had Paul or Jeff been aware of this they'd have
pointed me in the right direction much sooner.

Ironic that if I had waited a few days to start playing around with this
and 7.0.0 had been released, none of this would have come to light. But
it has at least revealed a possibly useful piece of info for anyone else
who encounters the issue.

Re: [slim] Installing extra packages on piCorePlayer

2020-12-24 Thread cliveb

OK, today the GPIO pin suddenly started working as desired, but I had no
idea which of the many things I fiddled with had done the trick.
So I've spent a lot of time experimenting, being very methodical to try
and find out what fixed it.

Here's what I found. Bear in mind this is on a RPi4 using piCorePlayer
6.1.0.

1. Flash SD card with a fresh piCorePlayer image and boot up.
2. SSH in and check some things:
a). GPIO 13 is in mode IN, voltage low.
b). ps -ef shows squeezelite running with these options: *-o
hw:CARD=ALSA -a 80 1*
3. Try playing a track: No audio, pause causes track to restart rather
than pause, seek skips to position but then plays back a loop of about 5
secs.
4. Set power on/off to GPIO 13, active high. Squeezelite restarts.
5. readall.sh now shows GPIO in mode OUT, voltage high (even though
player is off).
6. Switching player on & off makes no difference; GPIO 13 remains high
at all times.
7. ps -ef shows squeezelite with options: *-o hw:CARD=ALSA -a 80 1 -G 13
H*
8. Try playing a track: no change, behaviour as in (3) above.
9. Restart squeezelite: no change.
10. Reboot piCorePlayer: no change.
11. Change audio output to RPiDAC and save, then back to analog audio
and save. Squeezelite fails to restart.
12. Reboot.
13. Now we have a fully functioning player!
a). GPIO 13 behaves as required: voltage low when player is off, high
when player is on.
b). Playback works correctly: pause pauses, seek skips as it should.
c). ps -ef shows squeezelite options: *-o hw:CARD=ALSA -a 80 0 -G 13 H*

So it would seem that switching the audio output device is the crucial
step that gets everything going.
(I speculate that the reason others say "it just works" is perhaps
because they had already set their output device to something other than
the default analog audio).

I am also intruiged by the change in the parameters to the -a option
that happened.
That second parameter (0 instead of 1) is presumably the thing that got
the audio output working.
The documentation says that this is the "period count or size in bytes".
No idea what that means.

In summary, to get it working on the Pi4, the minimum sequence of steps
is:

1. Flash SD card with piCorePlayer, boot up.
2. Set power on/off to desired GPIO.
3. Set audio output to something else, save.
4. Set audio output back to analog, save.
5. Reboot.
6. Player now behaves as expected.

Mysteries that remain:

1. Why does changing the audio output fix the behaviour of the GPIO
control?
2. Why did pause and seek do the wrong things until the audio output was
fixed? (It's not like LMS has any idea that the player's output device
is set up wrong).

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this.
It was a bit of an ordeal, but of course orders of magnitude less work
than creating my own plugin, as I had originally thought I would need to
do!

Re: [slim] Installing extra packages on piCorePlayer

2020-12-23 Thread cliveb

Just done some more experiments and wonder if the results might be at
all informative.

On the Pi4, I started with both the gpio-poweroff tweak and the
squeezelite power on/off option switched off.
I never touched the gpio-poweroff tweak during these tests.

Logged in via SSH, I checked the state of GPIO 13. It was set as an
input, so I set it to output:

Code:

pcp-gpio mode 13 out

Next, I ensured it was low:

Code:

pcp-gpio write 13 0

and verified that it was low:

Code:

pcp-gpio read 13

Next, I made sure that the player was switched off in the LMS web
interface.
Then I turned on the squeezelite power on/off option, setting the GPIO
pin as 13 and active high.
After saving, which restarted squeezelte, the LMS web interface showed
te player as OFF.
But when I ran:

Code:

pcp-gpio read 13

the pin was HIGH, even though the player was off.
Switching the player on & off in the LMS web interface made no
difference to the state of GPIO 13; it stayed HIGH at all times.
So the squeezelite power on/off option is clearly doing SOMETHING with
GPIO 13; just not what is expected.

Just out of interest, I tried the same experiment but choosing the
Active LOW option in the squeezelite power on/off setting.
This time GPIO 13 stayed LOW at all times.

OK, thanks.

Q: is the gpio-poweroff option another way of achieving the same thing
as the Squeezelite power on/off setting?
(The options states "Refer to /mnt/mmcblk0p1/overlays/README", but that

No, I absolutely haven't been getting them mixed up. They were never
powered up at the same time. I know the IP addresses I used were
correct.

As far as I can see, my LMS (7.9.2) only lists the players currently
connected. Perhaps recently connected ones are shown in later versions
of LMS?

paul- wrote:

I only use local music.
Mind you, I did wonder if the fact that LMS is running on version 4.1.0
of piCorePlayer, but the players I'm testing are running version 6.1.0,
might be a factor.
But that wouldn't explain why the Pi2 started working and the Pi4 still
won't.
And I still don't understand why the Pi2 started working when it had
previously not been.

But if you are confident that updating LMS would solve this problem,
I'll give it a go.

I know it sounds suspicious, but I am 100% certain that I haven't been
getting any IP addresses wrong.
I just restarted the Pi4, it appears in LMS with an IP address of
192.168.0.107, and when I ssh to that address and play with pcp-gpio,
the pins work as expected.
But they don't respond to switching the player on & off from LMS.

I even went to the extent of re-writing the SD card with a fresh
piCorePlayer image and starting again from scratch, just in case
something had become corrupted. But it still doesn't work.

Re: [slim] Installing extra packages on piCorePlayer

2020-12-23 Thread cliveb

OK, there are some developments...

First of all, when browsing around I discovered this on the Tweaks
page:

32642
I wondered if this had anything to do with things, so I tried activating
the gpio-poweroff tweak (setting the pin to 13) and rebooted. But it
didn't seem to do anything.
I deactivated it, rebooted, and then to my surprise the Squeezelite
power on/off started working (when switching the player on/off via the
LMS web interface).

Q: DOES ACTIVATING THE GPIO-POWEROFF TWEAK CAUSE SOMETHING TO GET
SWITCHED ON IN THE PI HARDWARE?

This was all using the Pi2.

So I returned to the Pi4 only to discover that the same sequence of
events did NOT cause the power on/off to start working.

OK, so now on to Paul's suggestion:
paul- wrote:
> How many players do you have on your LMS, are you sure you are selecting

>
Yes, I am sure it's the correct player. It's the only one called
"picoreplayer" in LMS :-)

I played around with pcp-gpio & readall.sh, and confirmed that the pins
are behaving as they should:
readall confirmed that GPIO was in OUT mode
"pcp-gpio write 13 1" sets GPIO13 to 3.25V, and "pcp-gpio write 13 0"
sets it to 0V.
This was verified by both the output from readall, and using my
multimeter to check the voltage.
But turning the player on & off in the LMS web interface didn't change
GPIO13.
The voltage shown on the multimeter stayed the same, and the V column in
the readall output didn't change.
This was on the Pi4.

Thinking I might have imagined it working on the Pi2, I returned to that
and sure enough the Squeezelite power on/off IS working when the payer
is switched in the LMS web interface. (And just to verify things, it
also worked when turning the player on & off using the Squeezer app on
my phone).

So it's all a bit perplexing.

Responding to Jeff:

OK, thanks. So GPIO 13 is physical pin #33.
I don't have any HAT installed. This is a fresh piCorePlayer install

Should the Squeezelite power on/off setting just work, or do I need to

Incidentally, is there a recommendation for which GPIO pin would be best

I'm using a RPi4 if that's relevant.

Well, my apologies for not finding out about this! A genuinely
embarrassing face-palm moment on my part.

That said, I have now tried playing around with the Squeezelite Power
on/off GPIO settings, and haven't been able to make it work. Let me just
ask a couple of questions to make sure it does what I'm hoping for:

1. The help for the setting says: "Squeezelite will toggle this GPIO
when the Power On/Off button is pressed"
I interpret this to mean that when I click the power button for the
picoreplayer in the LMS web interface (and by extension, if I switch the
player on/off using a Duet controller or phone app such as Squeezer), it
should toggle the GPIO pin. Is that correct? I hope it is, because
that's exactly what I want it to do.

2. What numbering for the GPIO pins is used in this setting? Does it use
the physical hardware pin numbers, the (non-sequential) RPi numbering,
or some other scheme?
I ask this because I've tried both physical and RPi numbering, and
neither seem to work.
For example, if I set the Squeezelite to use GPIO 13, is this the
physical pin #13 (aka GPIO 27 in RPi-speak), or physical pin #33 (aka
GPIO 13)? I've tried checking both pins with a multimeter, and neither
seem to toggle. Pin #33 (GPIO 13) stays stubbornly high, and pin #13
(GPIO 27) stays stubbornly low.
Another way of asking the question:
If I set the Squeezelite power on/off to GPIO 13, which physical pin
will it control?

[slim] Installing extra packages on piCorePlayer

2020-12-22 Thread cliveb

Not sure which forum I should ask this in: here, 3rd party software,
DIY?

Anyhow, I'm setting out on a project to develop a plugin that will
toggle a GPIO pin on a pi running piCorePlayer.
This is to replicate the behaviour of the old PowerSwitchII plugin on
SB2/SB3/TP, to drive a relay to switch amps on/off.

To do this I'll need to install some additional packages to get access
to the GPIO pins.
On Raspbian, I'd apt-get install them, but this isn't available on the
TinyLinux that piCoreplayer uses.

How do I go about installing additional packages into a piCorePlayer
system?
Or is there some other way to access the GPIO pins in TinyLinux?

A few years ago I briefly experimented with Max2Play and concluded that
it was trying to cover too many bases and as a result required a fair
bit of configuration effort. So for the time being I stuck with
Vortexbox running on an old Acer Revo.

When I tried piCorePlayer on a RPi3 a couple of years back it was a
breeze to set up and the Vortexbox got retired. PCP seems specifically
aimed at the Squeezebox ecosystem and does it very well.

Quite so. LP does not necessarily equate to album. There are LPs that
contain more than one album. Obvious example off the top of my head is
Kate Bush's 1985 LP, which contains the two albums "Hounds of Love" and
"The Ninth Wave": to my mind they are distinctly separate artistic
works.

This is just one anecdotal data point...
I have piCorePlayer v4.1.0 running 24/7 on a RPi3B. The LMS cache is on
the external USB drive.
Over the last year or so, for various reasons (a faulty oven and a
faulty outdoor light) an RCD on the fusebox has tripped - I'd guess a
total of about 5 times.
On every occasion, when power was restored the RPi automatically
rebooted and piCorePlayer came back up without any drama and no
corruption.

Re: [slim] My squeezebox problem

2020-05-22 Thread cliveb

The obvious first thing to try is connect with ethernet. If that works,
the problem is something to do with the wi-fi. There have been reports
of Squeezebox wi-fi cards coming loose and reseating them fixes the
issue.

If it still acts up over ethernet, the next thing to check is the power
supply. Squeezeboxes can behave in all manner of weird ways if the power
supply is dodgy.

Hang on a minute! In your opening post you said these players are within
5ft of routers/APs. Last time I checked, routers tend to have ethernet
ports, and APs tend to be hooked into the network with ethernet.
If you don't have any spare ethernet cables, unplug the AP and use its
cable into a player.

Procrastinating like this just makes life harder. You have a trivial way
of ruling in or out whether the problem is with the wi-fi. Why not try
it?

Like all problems, the key to diagnosis is to be logical and systematic.
The first thing you must do is connect these players with ethernet and
see if the buffering stops. If it does, then you know it's a wi-fi
issue.

Interestingly that's exactly the same situation as in my household - my
wife is feeling a bit ropey with slight temperature and mild cough, plus
she aches all over. I feel fine except for a very slightly strange
feeling in my throat and nose. So we're self-isolating.

What bothers me is that whatever we may have, there's a good chance it
ISN'T Covid-19. Latest figures I've seen for UK testing is that of all
the tests that have been made, the positive rate is under 5%. That means
there are many people whose symptoms warranted testing but turned out
not to have Covid-19. So that means there's a good chance we're
suffering the inconvenience of self-isolation for no reason and after a
couple of weeks when we venture out again, we may very well still be
vulnerable.

So your current setup on a RPi3 is working just fine, but you're
thinking about switching to a RPi4 - with consequent possible heat
issues.

The obvious question is: Why? If everything is working fine now, why
change, especially if it might give you some overheating issues?

I know lots of people have given you reassurance about the heat, but
that's kind of besides the point. I still don't see why anyone would
want to change an existing setup that's working well. (I'm one of those

Your best bet is probably to look for nearfield monitors intended for
home studio use.
They tend to be cheaper than "HiFi" products of similar performance, but
on the downside can be less attractive in a domestic setting.
And you'll not get active speakers at the price point you want anywhere

Have a look on the Thomann website

[slim] SB2 has died

2019-11-23 Thread cliveb

My SB2 (bought back in 2005) seems to have finally turned up its toes.
A few weeks ago the display apparently failed, but the unit was still
working and playing OK.
Yesterday I went to use it and it was totally unresponsive, and not
showing as a player in LMS.
The power supply wall-wart is fine, supplying 5.08V.
This is a wired-only SB2, so it can't be due to a failed WiFi board.
I tried going through the motions of a factory reset and Xilinx reset,
and nothing appears to happen.
When I apply power, the optical output does NOT glow red.

So, I'm ready to accept it is done for and replace it with a RPi, but
before I do that is there anything I can check on the circuit board?
There are no visibly burned out components. What voltages can I check?

Agreed. It's rubber-coated things that get sticky. My 14-year old SB2 is
now very sticky, but since I never touch it I've left it alone.

It's nothing to do with use. A quick Google suggests that it's due to
the vulcanisation of the rubber breaking down, so the rubber starts
turning back into its raw sticky state.

It's not just Squeezeboxes that are affected - anything with that
"soft-feel" rubber coating has the same problem. My Atomic ski helmet
got sticky and it took a long time and a lot of effort with isopropyl
alcohol to remove the coating.

All of the good things you mention about why the Pi4 is better than the
Pi3 are perfectly valid when considered in an appropriate context. I
applaud the fact they've decoupled the LAN from USB, and that it now has
USB3. (FWIW, I still think an onboard SATA controller would be the icing
on the cake, but we're still waiting for that).

But none of the Pi3's limitations you mention are significant in the
context of an LMS server. My LMS running on a Pi3 with library on an SSD
attached via USB2 has never, not once, ever, given me any trouble. It
supports 5 players no problem. You don't need gigabit ethernet and/or
USB3 speeds to stream the mickey-mouse data rates consumed by audio.

Using a more capable device when it's not justified, and suffering other
issues as a result, would be considered pretty daft in most walks of
life.
It's a bit like choosing to go to Tesco (Walmart for our US cousins) in
a Ferrari instead of a Ford - no advantage, and you end up burning more
fuel.

Been on holiday for a couple of weeks, and am perplexed by the direction
this thread has taken while I was away.
It would seem that various people are trying out solutions to potential
overheating problems when running LMS on a Pi4.
I guess using a Pi4 then looking to fix any issues that arise is a case
of trying something for the fun of it,
but from a practical perspective, the solution is patently obvious:
don't use a Pi4.
A Pi3 is more than man enough for the task (even a Pi2 will do the job),
and it doesn't get hot.

If you never need to touch your SB2, then I guess it's no problem, but
if you want to remove the stickyness, isopropyl alcohol is a suitable
solvent. It takes a bit of effort, but does eventually get it off.

When I suggested re-encoding at a lower rate I didn't mean a lower level
of FLAC compression. I meant a a lower sample rate. For example, if the
file that won't play is at 96khz, try sample rate converting it to
48khz, using something like SOX. It could be that the BT adapter you
have can't cope with the higher sample rate.

Remember that because the TP plays this file ok through its analogue
output, it cannot be a problem with the TP decoding the FLAC. By the
time the signal gets to the BT adapter it's plain linear PCM.

Logic needs to be applied.

1. It doesn't matter what the original encoding format was, the TP will
decode it to linear PCM before it appears at the optical output. So that
is a red herring.

2. Is the sample rate or bit depth different to other files that play ok
through the BT adapter? If it is, then try reencoding it to a lower
rate.

It's only write cycles you need to worry about. Just reading from a SSD
is completely benign. Since a music server is used overwhelmingly for
reading rather than writing (you do listen more often than update the
library, I presume), then I'd say an LMS type of use is ideally suited
to SSDs - low power and completely silent.

Just one comment. I think it's a bit disingenuous that the company
selling this card talks about USB3 and their specs claim 6Gb/s when they
must know that RPi only supports USB2.

That said, for a LMS setup USB2 speeds are more than adequate. I

Well, if it doesn't do gapless playback of FLAC or Vorbis, then it
doesn't support them, does it? Gapless playback is an intrinsic
attribute of FLAC and Vorbis.

OK, understood.
All I can say is that after installing pCP from a fresh SD card image,
and using pCP to download & install LMS, the PowerSave plugin was in
that InstalledPlugins folder.
Maybe Paul can shed some light on it?

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!

That's what I needed to know - the correct folder to put it in.

PowerSave and PowerSwitchII are now working fine.

No, I didn't try copying over anything. This was a fresh install of pCP,
and I used the pCP facilities to download and install LMS.

Are you saying that anything in
/usr/local/slimserver/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins should just show
up?

Also, how does LMS use the DownloadedPlugins directory?

OK, that directory did not exist, so I created it and copied the
PowerSave directory over from the InstalledPlugins directory.
After an LMS restart, the plugin appeared and worked correctly.

Then after a reboot of pCP /usr/local/slimserver/Plugins had gone (so it
doesn't survive a reboot), but the plugin remained active.
I can only surmise that perhaps putting PowerSave into
/usr/local/slimserver/Plugins and restarting LMS caused it to get picked
up and stored somewhere else.

I then tried the same trick for the PowerSwitchII plugin, but after
initially appearing (and being made available on my test SB3), following
a reboot it's gone. So there must be something subtly different going
on. Experiments will continue...

Just had a look at that page and I see an issue regarding having
multiple switching devices on the network.
I have three (TP, SB2, SB3) that use the plugin, so think I'd better
stick with PowerSwitchII for the time being!

I have no idea. I assumed it was one of the standard plugins shipped
with LMS.
But the fact remains that the files are there on the server, but don't
show up in the Plugins tab on the web page.

No, that one always had to be manually added.
On my old server (Vortexbox 1.10, SC 7.6.1), it sits in
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/Plugins, but on piCorePlayer (LMS 7.9.2),
there appears to be no equivalent directory.
So I was just asking where it needs to go.

[slim] piCorePlayer and plugins

2019-02-27 Thread cliveb

I'm experimenting with building a new server using piCorePlayer.
Everything is going fine so far, with one exception: plugins.

I'm using piCorePlayer v4.1.0 (piCore v9.2pCP, LMS 7.9.2)

In /usr/local/slimserver/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins, there is a
subdirectory PowerSave, which contains the expected files (Plugin.pm,
Settings.pm, install.xml, strings.txt). This happens to be one of the
plugins I want to use. But on the Plugins tab within the LMS server
settings web page, there is no mention of the PowerSave plugin.

What do I need to do to get PowerSave appear in the list of available
plugins?

Also, there's another plugin I want to use - Felix's PowerSwitchII. I
have the source. Where do I need to place it for it to be picked up?
