Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!

2017-09-30 Thread db122

There's a bug, fixed in 2.2.1, where the widget would show "No Players"
when the notification was not showing (along with a few in-between
cases).

Starting with 2.2.0, timely widget updates are tied to the presence of
the notification. If you swipe away the notification (or on Android 4.x,
hit the X button) then you are killing the server connection and the
widget will no longer updated immediately. It will be updated per a
typical Android widget update interval, 30 minutes. Not terribly useful
though.

The notification has a purpose. It serves to let you know that your
device has a background service running, and is actually 100% mandatory
in Android 8.0 anyways to prevent your service from being killed very
quickly. If you strongly dislike the notification, then on most modern
devices you can choose to hide notifications from specific apps.

FTR, tested here on Android 4.4, 5.1, 7.0 and 8.0.

I'm going to start a new thread for 2.2.x to pull things together. Maybe
move the discussion over there.

Orange Squeeze caches certain queries (including music folder browsing)
for 24 hours. Previous versions of LMS were so slow browsing by music
folder that it was a very commonly requested feature, particularly with
users running LMS on lower-powered NAS devices.

You can force a refresh of any list by finding the Refresh option
(menu button on Samsung devices, option menu in upper right on most
others).

It's probably time for me to revisit this default behavior if folder
browsing speed has improved.

That might actually be the result of a LMS bug: LMS doesn't update the
last scan timestamp in BMF mode. What version are you running? I think

I fixed this in the 7.8.x branch. You might want to give this a try if
 you haven't already.

With this set, I could at least force a refresh if it's been updated --
but it wouldn't allow a user to browse in to a folder to trigger a
selective scan of content that LMS itself hasn't scanned yet. I guess
that's what refresh is there for, still.

Anyway, when I scroll through my library it takes a long while for the
album art to catch up with the scrolling.

I'm using this on a Nexus 5 and my server version is 7.9 on a well-tuned
WHS box. The library contains 9000 or so albums.

Are you using the beta or 2.0.x? The released beta has some annoying
quirks. Must. Release. Updated. Beta.

Otherwise, it could be an incompatibility or just bad behavior between
Orange Squeeze and 7.9 nightlies. I haven't tried 7.9 yet, so if it
works at all, it's solely because the LMS maintainers are doing a great
job of keeping backwards compatibility.

I'll add it to my list of things to check, but I've only got a few
hours/week to work on the app...

For album artwork, it simply looks at the scan timestamp. When it
changes, it invalidates the artwork along with any other cached data
associated with that server. For remote artwork (and url's proxied
through the server) it's a bit dumber, just caching for 24 hrs. I don't
really see how LMS would have broken this -- I think he might be using
the beta, which might have a performance issue/bug there. I seem to
remember fixing one of those but it's idling in my dev branch.

I am currently running the 1.4 preview, and I test it onBlue Stack app

I did some packet analyzing with Wire shark, and there I can see that
the Orange Squeeze program does not send out any WOL packets.

I use the app from outside my homenetwork, but other apps works ok with
this setup, so Orange Squeeze should be able to do the same, have other
users had problems with this ?

Can you elaborate on your network setup? If Orange Squeeze has trouble
deciding/locating the proper broadcast address for the WOL packet, it
won't send it, so that seems like what is likely happening. In
particular, it will only send WOL over WiFi.

Not really a known issue, but that doesn't make it valid. I use it on a
N7 all the time. What LMS server version?

I'd love to see logs generated when these connection hiccups happen.
With a N7 you can use a trick to send a developer report by holding down
vol up/vol down/power simultaneously. Android 4.1 made it much harder to
get reliable log files from non-rooted devices. You can also use the
menu item in preferences to submit logs, but often by the time you
navigate there the relevant data is gone.

Also, you might try the preview builds if you haven't already. There are
quite a few connectivity-related changes (but nothing specific I can
point to to solve your problem) in the 1.4-preview series.

Hi there, thanks for reporting. This is a known issue and as you note,
the easiest workaround is to use the triangle. That's what I use all

You're going to be seeing lots of turnover and general instability in

Relating to the all-white dialog issue on Android 2.2 and e-ink devices,
the latest preview (just released now) makes an attempt to color the
dialog in more stark contrast (departing from the Android 2.2 defaults),
which I hope will resolve this issue. Please post your experiences.

Sure, that's not exactly how it's supposed to work but I see the

I'll get a fix in progress. Thanks!

pippin wrote:
Update: Killing OrangeSqueeze has helped and at least after killing it
also the player did not automatically restart when looking at the
lock-screen widget (it's never been my selected player there)

So for 1.3.x, I would expect that Orange Squeeze would keep the local
SqueezePlayer active for as long as Orange Squeeze has a connection to
the server. This means that if you are using widgets, any time your
screen is on your device will maintain a connection to your server and
also keep your local SqueezePlayer running. If you turn your screen off
or it times out and turns off automatically, Orange Squeeze will time
its server connection out to save power, and it will also cease to keep
SqueezePlayer alive. SqueezePlayer can then time out according to its
own policies then.

As discussed earlier, killing Orange Squeeze (e.g. its services) will
cause this behavior to stop -- at least temporarily. However, because
the Orange Squeeze power management service is sticky, it may be
restarted by the system automatically. The reason for this is that if
your device is under load or memory constraints, then even the services
that you want running may be killed by the system. This is a good thing,
because it lets you play games or do things that consume all of the
device resources and then sticky services will be restarted at the first
opportunity so that your widgets and such will start working again
automatically. While the power management service will be restarted
automatically, I want to reiterate that this service is very lightweight
and is nothing like a server connection at all.

Note that for 1.3.x, every time a connection is established, the local
SqueezePlayer instance will also be started if that is enabled in the
Orange Squeeze preferences. Right now this happens for every reconnect,
including reconnects for the lock screen widget, etc. I'll have to think
about how to improve this behavior, because it probably isn't necessary
in a few limited scenarios (widgets active for different players).
However, when the user opens up the UI again we would want the player
started up automatically, I suppose.

OK, good, thanks Pippin. I'm going to release a new preview sometime
today, and I will add a bit of temporary logging to it that won't
require you to enable 'verbose logging' to see. I'm hoping it will tell
us which of the following is happening:

1) OS is not shutting itself down properly and keeping the connection
active (unlikely, since the network connection would show a significant
power draw in your situation).
2) OS is shutting itself down, but still somehow sending pings to
SqueezePlayer even though the rest of the service is shut down (I've
audited this section of code and don't see it myself, but I can't rule
it out 100%)
3) SqueezePlayer is keeping itself active through some other mechanism

Once you get the update, just use your device as normal and use the
submit logs to send a log to me when you wake up and notice that
SqueezePlayer stayed awake too long. We will hope that the log data
won't roll over -- there is a limit to how much Android keeps.

Thanks.

My guess is that there's only a connection for SP, separate from OS. If
I remember correctly, when I fixed the bug that was leaving the
connection up for much longer, OS was taking ~60% of the power drain for
your situation, so based on those numbers I'm assuming that the OS
connection was dropped correctly. The logs should contain enough
information to confirm this.

running, even when I'm not using it. Is there any way to configure it
to NOT have these running if the app is not running in the foreground? I
hate it when apps run all the time like that.

First off, don't assume that a service running means that there is
anything happening or power drain from the process. It doesn't.

One service runs all the time: the power management service. It simply
receives notifications when the screen turns on and off, wifi comes up
and down, etc. There are no active running threads or connections
associated with this service and it will not take any cpu or draw any
power. There is no way to disable this although you could try
experimenting with task killers, etc. to kill it if you like. It won't
accomplish anything, but do what you like. It will break some of the app
behavior if this service is not running (specifically, power saving
features).

There is a second service and that maintains a connection to the server.
You absolutely need this if you use the widgets at all. If you don't use
the widgets and are OK with the connection being dropped every time
Orange Squeeze moves to the background (any task comes in front of it)
then you can set the connection timeout in the preferences to a very low
value. The default will have the service shut itself down after a minute
or two of the app being in the background (and no widgets).

My advice: before you spent too much time worrying about it, check your
device power management screen to see if the app is actually taking any
significant power. If it's not taking power, then it's also not slowing
your device down because cpu usage = power drain. You can only do these
tests if the device is running off battery, by the way.

server version are you running? FWIW, I start and stop the app dozens of

One thing about the Galaxy Nexus is that the Wifi performance/range is
horrible. I had to install a repeater so that I could use the device
reliably in my office, and my Macbook Pro has a very high signal.

It could be that Orange Squeeze is less tolerant of requests that go
unanswered or are lost than Squeeze Commander, or it could be a race
condition that simply doesn't expose itself in my testing.

The more details I can get about your situation, the better. Enable

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from and I knew someone would
mention it right away. Downloading tracks is a mostly secondary (even
tertiary) function of the app. There are many free id3 tagger/renamers
for Android that would do a better job than we ever could in organizing
your files. I would suggest that you download tracks to a folder of your
choice (that is customizable) and then use the taggers to get them
exactly how you want. Or, certainly keep using SqueezeCommander for
those purposes.

Most people will rely on apps like Google Play or other tag-based apps,
so the filenames themselves are irrelevant.

 2. Download single files

You can deselect the files you don't want to download -- I intended to
add a select all/deselect all from the cataloged list of downloads. You
can also select a single file and download it from music folder, can't

Yes, just didn't make the cut for this release.

There are a lot, but here's the most recent.

http://goo.gl/77Jrh

From a usability standpoint I'd say what happens when you press a button
must be predictable for the user without studying Android user guides.
Which is why it's important that apps adhere to the established
guidelines, like using the back button properly and letting people back
out of apps without complications.

Other Apps are not that easy. I include OrangeSqueeze here. There is
also a second use case: when you are deep in the menus one presses the
back button multiple times very fast to get to the top (because for new
users that's the more common way than to know that one can tap on the
top left button) so one can still close the App erroneous.
Well, there's the icon in the top-left if you just want to back out to
the top. Or the navbar. Some apps activate the up-one-level affordance
in the home icon as well (OS doesn't, by design, because we have other
ways to go up a level using the navbar).

So personally I'd vote for a 'do you really want to quit button' indeed.

Fair enough, but I really feel like it's an anachronism that gets in the
way for most apps. Games and other exceptions, are, well, the exception.
:-)

By the way: even Google does it in its navigation App because it's not
obvious if the back button leaves the App or gets you back to search
there, so you always have an excuse if needed :-)

Ugh. :-)

Truthfully, this behavior would be better handled on the server, but

just everybody seems to have one of these small, cheap, Android tablets
 now.

It comes down to time -- there are bikes to ride, books to read, games
to play. Android apps will scale up to tablet better than an iOS app, so
there is less incentive. I don't spend all day browsing in Orange
Squeeze, I use it about 15 times a day, for about 20 seconds each time.
That said, I want to explore more now that 1.3 is stabilizing.

Yes, I expect it does. The service that feeds the widgets preserves the

widgets, we probably should be dropping the connection much sooner

But even if I use widgets, there should be some way to stop that

it once a week, I don't think that amount of drain is acceptable, even
 when using a widget.

Oh, and now that I know about them I will _of course_ use the widgets,
widgets are one of the few things I love on Android and miss on iOS.

Added in 1.3.0 preview, and relatively simple.

The drain is due to preserving the network connection so that the widget
remains up to date. There's very little CPU usage associated with it,
but the device cannot go to sleep if we want real-time updates of album
artwork on your widget screen. There's room for improvement on this
though, as when the screen turns off we can accelerate the shutdown
process. Right now that's missing. Thanks for reminding me.

The devices themselves have alarm capability, provided by the server
(Logitech Media Server, SqueezeCenter, whatever). You can access it from
the web interface or, depending on your player, from the player itself.

That's deep waters for me.. well, I don't mind trying smth new but I had
in mind smth within OS again.. Correct me if I'm wrong but the way I see
 it is:
 - You can send command to synchronize players form OS, right?
 - You can send command to play selected music, right?
However both things need to be done manually by physically pressing
buttons (touching screen I mean :) ) All whats needed is sort of
simulation of 2 above plus timer which check time every 60s. Think of it
as macro which would be executed when when timer equals specified
 time...

Right, both of those commands could be done on a schedule through a
variety of techniques. The simplest would be to use the Command Line
Interface of the server (see above). There are a lot of resources about
this, google Squeezebox CLI for lots of info. To use something like OS
is a bit more complicated than it really would need to be, but if you
are trying to do it all through just an Android device then it certainly
is an option. You'd still need to delve deep into the Squeezebox CLI
syntax, however. Check out the Tasker app (or various clones), which
lets you do all sorts of fancy things, scripted on an Android device.
You want to be able to send an Intent to an Android service with the
appropriate parameters at the appropriate time.

2012-11-30 Thread db122

Just updated the preview build. We're getting very close. Was hoping to
get the final release out before December, since that month doesn't
exist for Android 4.2 users, but that's looking less likely.

enhancements

- Experimental (truly, we have no hardware to test this on) support
for device media buttons like play/pause/next track/etc. Let us know.
- Addition of service API key on the about screen. This random key is
used to protect calls to the public service on your device from
  malicious apps.

defects fixed

- Connection will now be dropped automatically when the screen turns
off. This should dramatically reduce power consumption when devices
  are in standby.
- Widget will now normally update itself properly when coming out of
  extended power-off cycle.
- Global search screen was incomplete. Headers are now properly
displayed, should make for a less confusing display.
- Some fixes to soft keyboard handling in the search screen.
- Various fixes for Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices.

2012-11-30 Thread db122

One thing: do you always read the full artwork? You are aware that the
server can resize it for you? The thumbnails don't render very well on
 my Nexus 7 right now.

For thumbnails, we use URL's like this whenever possible:

http://192.168.0.2:9000/music/6df5a901/cover_128xX_p.jpg

In my experience, this doesn't actually return .jpg, but either .jpg,
.png, whatever, depending on what format you've got on the server. Once
saved locally we render them unscaled.

Is it album artwork, radio artwork, or what? For some artwork (like
remote thumbnails from MOG), we load the thumbnails from the remote
server (a non-Logitech server) and scale locally. Because some of the
images are *huge* coming inbound from the network, we resample first at
~double the desired resolution to avoid overflowing the device heap
(pretty easy to do), then scale the resulting image to our exact
requirements.

Pippin, thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely take it to heart. I did
take a stab at a couple of the polish-related issues you raised, so
check out the next preview (or final release, as it may be).

As to your issues with the Android back button -- well, you're not
alone, but in my opinion, the alternative (the lack of a back button) is
far worse. Granted, you can get into some situations where the backstack
gets out of control (facebook app is crazy sometimes), but I think
Orange Squeeze walks a line once you get used to it. In general the icon
in the upper right takes you to the browse screen no matter where you
are, and resets the backstack at the same time. Most other things
preserve the backstack.

It's interesting that the issue of confirming with a user whether or not
to quit the app is raised. First, on Android there is no quitting
the app. Relaunching it brings you right back where you left off most of
the time automatically, but this issue just came up on the Android
developers group just in the last couple days, and a rookie developer
was shunned out of the room for asking how to implement a confirmation
like that. It's simply considered bad form on Android. There is a lot of
discussion about this on why and how and whatever, plenty of data to
find if you're interested. Without question, however, Orange Squeeze is
intended to be an Android app for Android users.

 What do I mean by pop-up w?
For example in the Player menue: When I tab on the little triangle on
the right side for one of the players, a context menue pops up (the pop
 up window).
That window has a head line listing the player ('On: xyz-Playername')
and underneath there are lines, subdividing tasks - but no text is
visible for me. But when I tab the 1st, the synchronize options appear
 (with all text visible).
On the last line, a faint small 'zzz' is visible - no further text,
 leading to the snooze option

Am I really the only one having this issue??
Note: I am running OZ on an e-ink (bw) device - a rooted BarnesNoble

Is there a way to fix this?

You probably are one of the very few running the app on a black and
white device. Surely there is a way to fix it, but it may be a bit of
guessing how to work around the issue because I have no way to test how
the colors and device default themes interact. I suspect the root
problem is actually in the default device theme used -- the default text
color used in the action menu is the same (or nearly the same -- with a
black and white device there aren't too many options) as the default
background color.

I wil think about how to best solve this.

too, also from a popup on the players screen. I'm not sure I understand

But you're right that it's too late for 1.3.0 anyway. This release

It would seem you might have problems with a lot of more modern Android

Keep your eye on the preview builds once 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 are out I
hope to experiment with some more radical changes then (not that your

You probably aren't missing anything obvious. Some of this was added in
the 1.3.0 preview, which you can install for free from Google Play.
Well, at least as long as you are moving between
squeezenetwork/mysqueezebox.com and your local server. If you are moving
between different local servers (why?) then the app doesn't do that.
Explain why you're doing this on a regular basis, and I might consider
spending time on implementing that (priorities, right?) but I think most
people alternate between SN and their local server exclusively.

So, I have to edit my own reply. I was a bit mistaken, and some things
do work better in Orange Squeeze Preview than I had remembered. Heck, if
I can't keep it straight :-)

If you are on a server, you can pull visible players (servers on the
same subnet communicate this) to your current server. The players show
up at the bottom as Players on other servers. You can only push a
player to mysqueezebox.com, however.

So, in short, to move a player to another server, connect to that server
and pull it over. Two-step process, but reasonable I think?

Maybe should. Seems like most products have a single thread though. Also
seems like almost all of the discussion is about the preview release now
-- I think it's safe to say most of the people on this board are at
least casually interested in the development releases.

Big thanks for this! It was the last reason I kept Squeeze Commander
 around.

Would it be possible to allow the user to configure the download root
path? I prefer to save music to my actual SD card, which is actually
/mnt/sdcard-ext on my phone (/mnt/sdcard being a chunk of internal
memory treated as a virtual SD card).

Yes, you can expect several improvements in this regard. Wanted to get
the preview out before the long weekend so the UI to select the target
folder just didn't make it in.

Hi just tried the new version, still the same problem, that Orange does
not restart wifi, if the smartphone was been idle for some time.

It is a Samsung galaxy I9100 with Android 4.0.4. what happens is that
the wifi symbol disapears from top ribbon on the Android - you know the
place where you can se the battery status, 3g status etc. However, when
I pull down the screen from the top, the wifi icon is still green.

If I press the icon (top stop the wifi) and press again to enable it -
the wifi icon re-appear next to the battery indicator and Orange can
 find the wifi.

So it seems like Samsung put the wifi into sleep, when left unused for a
long time, and Orange is not able to re-enable the wifi.

 Hope this is understandable.

Yep, sorry I hadn't had time to look at this for this preview release.
I'll take a look at everything relating to this next week.

I will say that if the wifi icon is not 100% enabled (i.e. not in the
top bar) then there may be a bug in the phone operating system rather
than Orange Squeeze. It would be interesting to see the logs when this
occurs, so with new new preview release, enable verbose logging and then
when you run into the problem, use an app like CatLog to send the
results to me.

Incidentally, when this happens, if you open up a web browser *without
restarting the Wifi*, are you able to browse properly?

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2012-11-20 Thread db122

Released a new preview build, lots of stuff:

- Ability to download tracks from many browse hierarchies to your
device (Android 2.3/Gingerbread devices and higher). Supports
downloading by folder, artist, album, year (including most custom
  browse variations).
- Visual styling updates
- Android 4.2/Jellybean and higher devices can now add a widget to
  the lock screen.
- Everyone gets a new larger widget, in addition to the existing
  small one
- Android 4.1/Jellybean and higher devices can now submit log data
  directly from Advanced Preferences.

Defects fixed:

- Missing ability to pin items to home (top-level) menu.
- Now Playing screen artist is now the track artist, which brings
it in sync with the web interface and other Jive-based clients (Trac
  issue #69).
- last.fm did not properly show thumbs up/thumbs down
- Previous track button was not going to beginning of track on
  initial press
- When connecting to a server that has just been woken up, send
subsequent pings sooner to speed up connection process.
- Preference to disable automatic crash reporting was not working.
- When a local SqueezePlayer was running, some or all other players
would be hidden in the player list.
- Icons missing for Random Play context menu items
- Widgets did not correctly display thumbs up/down when appropriate.
- Lots of other widget bug fixes and cleanups

The current version lists all 5 of my players when I select the

The next preview build will have a send logs option on Android 4.1+.
Devices with earlier versions of Android can use the app CatLog.

For now, your best bet would be to try the magic incantation of holding
down your device power button + volume up + volume down, which generates
a system report and allows you to send it via email or save to Google
Drive, etc. It is *not* easy to do, in my experience, but I eventually
got it after a few minutes.

Are you using the preview build (1.3.0-numbers) or the release version

stable than the release version -- one of the reasons I'll be pushing to
iron out any remaining polish issues over the next week or so and get it

Yep. To add to this description: It's a standard Android UI feature, not
something specific to Orange Squeeze or any other app. The developer
just sets a flag saying fastscroll enabled and the OS provides the
handle and the flyover hints for the section you are in. It comes so
naturally to me, as a long-time Android user, that I don't even think
about it when I use it. I'm sure if you are used to other mobile
platforms that there are quite a few anachronisms that take some getting
used to.

but when I select something to play, it doesn't do anything.
 2) The problem with tapping the artist on the now playing screen and
seeing nothing found is back. This works in the regular version.

Also, do you have plans to add the ability to set the sleep time for a
player? I miss this since I use this functionality all of the time when
my kids go to bed. I think it could be added to the pop up menu for the
player where you can change the player name, change synchronization,
 etc.

Not sure about #1, as I don't have Rhapsody. But I am sure we can get it
fixed, but it might be easiest to have you contact me directly at
supp...@orangebikelabs.com and I will figure out a way for you to get me
the logging information I need. If you are running a pre-Jellybean
device then you can enable verbose logging in the diagnostics, and use
an app like CatLog to send me log files after you browse to your
Rhapsody items and try to play them.

#2, fixed, again (and again), at least for the 7.5.5 server I'm running
locally for testing.
