Re: [slim] Squeezebox distributors UK

2007-09-10 Thread ultra238a

Hi,

Paul here from Progressive Consumer Electronics Ltd, we are currently
the UK distributor for Squeezebox and Transporter products from
Logitech. We have been the exclusive UK distributor for these and
previous products since the age of the SliMP3 (so quite a while)

We have a number of online resellers in the UK who have been selling
the products for many years including:

amazon.co.uk
dabs.com
scan.co.uk
ripcaster.co.uk
multitaskcomputing.co.uk
advancedmp3players.co.uk
broadbandstuff.co.uk
mediahome.co.uk

and many others

Ebuyer does list the product when they have stock but the buyer for the
category seems to change quite frequently so they lack focus on the
Squeezebox (they do sell a lot of products!). We aim to rectify this
shortly.

You will also notice the PC World.co.uk are now selling the Squeezebox
and now have stock in the majority of the stores across the UK.

As we now have a steady supply of Squeezebox and Transporter stock from
Logitech our aim is to go out and get these products in to high-street
hi-fi retailers as we now have a good story to tell. We are also joing
forces with the Brigantia buying group to push the Squeezebox in to
their 1000+ high street members.

With amazon.co.uk, dabs.com and scan.co.uk listing Squeezebox (and
Ebuyer again shortly) I think you will agree that along with PC World
that we have most of the major ecommerce companies working with us in
the UK.

Feel free to pm me or post here if you have any further questions.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox distributors UK

2007-09-10 Thread ultra238a

No problem :)

You have got to remember that whilst Squeezebox has always been a great
product, Slim Devices were always quite small and hence no marketing
money but more importantly I think is the fact that streaming media
files from a computer to a device to play through your hi-fi or TV is
still a very new concept to the main stream (even if we have been doing
it for 4 or 5 years) and getting high street retailers like PC World etc
needs at the very least a big brand like Logitech to get them
interested.

The Amazon.co.uk price rise is an error and it will return to £195
tomorrow. When the error was pointed out to them today they changed it
on their system straight away. Unf. it takes 24hrs to roll out such a
change.

SRP for Squeezebox in the UK has actually come down from £229 to £219

Re: [slim] Delays from Amazon UK

2007-06-04 Thread ultra238a

Whilst I'm not going in to specific details of why the UK hasn't had any
stock for the last 2 months I have happy to say that we received 800x
units on Friday from Logitech and we fulfilled all of our back orders
the same day. This means that all of our current re-sellers now have
the stock they have had on back order with us and can fulfill your
orders.

Moving forward we have placed rolling purchase orders with Logitech so
now that the new Logitech branded product is available we should
continually be in stock, especially on the run up to Christmas.

We should have another shipment leaving Logitech at the end of this
week.

 Hi. Another newbie here.

 I've recently purchased a 200Gb QNAP, and I'm having a little trouble
with the device shutting down and restarting for no apparent reason.
It's quite warm at the moment, which makes me wonder whether there's
some sort of thermal protection, but there's nothing in the event logs
other than the informational messages about successful shutdown and
 startup!

I've updated the Qnap firmware, but other than that, the device is
out-of-the-box. It's running a static IP and my SB3 is also using
static IP via 802.11g through my Netgear WAP/Router. I've got most of
the sharing functions (webserver, multimedia station etc) disabled, and
am only using Slimserver and a few shared folders.

It shut down and restarted about 6 times in quick succession earlier
(hottest part of the day - any connection?), and when you're in the
middle of an album, that's kind of annoying!

Apologies if this problem has already been discussed and solved earlier
 in the thread. Any advice?

file.

I have also asked Qnap about the external sATA case to match the TS-101

there is some new Qnap product news in the next couple of weeks - I'll
keep you posted.

2006-07-24 Thread ultra238a

Hi,

You need to download the All-In-One Slimserver update via Opera or
Firefox (IE cuts off the .gz extension) once you have this installed
you can download the 6.3.1 update which just has the .tar file
extension.

To install the updates just download the files and reboot - don't
uncompress them first.

I am working on the documentation.

Thanks

pedalhead Wrote:
Hi @. Just received a SB3 Qnap 101 today I'm pretty impressed so

sure which is correct) of the 6.3.1 update in the update folder and
rebooted the box, but my Slimserver version is still 6.2.2.

Overall, it seems like it could be a really good solution, but the lack
of clear documentation for the Qnap with Slimserver is a bit of an issue
 right now I reckon. Cheers.

[slim] Nintendo DS Lite - The next big thing for controlling your Squeezebox?

2006-07-03 Thread ultra238a

Hi,

I picked up one of the new(ish) Nintendo DS Lites over the weekend and
it is a great bit of kit.

It is well built, has WiFi, twin screens of which the bottom one is a
touch screen and seems nice and quick to use.

Next month Opera are bringing out a web browser cart for the DS which
from the initial reviews seems to be saying it is very compatible with
the various web standards that are out there - which is good news.

What I am thinking skin wise for the SlimServer and the DS is that top
screen could display album art, the current playing track and the next
and previous track. And then on the bottom screen you could have the
controls etc as the bottom screen is a sensitive touch screen.

Obviously the best thing about this is that the DS only costs £99.99 +
£29.99 for the web browser (might even be cheaper than that when it
comes out) which means that is is half the price of the Nokia 770

range and we are working as hard as we can to support the other
formats. OGG is now available and I hope to have AAC available this
weekend or early next week. APE will follow shortly afterwards. It is
unfortunate what happened with the drive compatibility but that was an
issue for Qnap to sort out which they did very quickly.

Just like Squeezebox, the product will get better and better as time
goes on with updates and fixes.

people into buying the product, not after.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-04-02 Thread ultra238a

Mark,

I'll answer a few of your questions.

Firstly we made a mistake about announcing the product so early. Qnap
prommised us the product would launch back at the end of October last
year and they kept pushing it back and pushing it back. We could have
had a small amount of units just before the Chinese new year but we
didn't want to take them because they would have been off the first
production run. Of course when the first batch did arrive after the
Chinese new year we didn't take into account how long these things
would take to format. All of this has been documented though in this
thread and others.

With respect to us supporting the product in to the future I can only
assure you that we won't loose interest. Why won't we loose interest,
well maybe something to do with the fact that we are the UK distributor
of the SlimDevices products in the UK might have something to do with
it.

I suggest that if you have any further issues with the TS-101 you have
purchased you contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
see if we can resolve any of them.

One last thing. I have a Linn active system at home which could be
considered to be a half decent hifi system and you can't beat a well
encoded FLAC file so if disc space isn't a problem then I would convert
if I were you.

Mark Norton Wrote:
It's all to do with expectation. I bought (ordered) this product in
November since when there's been the countless missed delivery dates,
the bull about the Chinese New Year and the rest. Even if there were
problems in getting the hardware shipped, presumably Progressive could
have been working in parallel to get SlimServer working in all its
guises. As it is, we have a product which shipped 3 months late and
doesn't currently do what it is supposed to.

Yes I use Apple Lossless; disk space is cheap and it's pointless
ripping CDs to a lossy format because if you have a half-decent sound
system, the difference is night and day, far more than any messing with
 the power supply will reveal.

I also wonder about the long term viability of the solution. There no
charge for the integration work of Slim Server into the TS-101 and
apart from making a turn on the hardware, where's the incentive to keep
it up to date? I'm resigned to the fact that while a PC hosted SB3 is
likely to evolve for the better over time, a TS-101 hosted SB3 is
likely to be frozen in time - bugs, warts and all - once Progressive
lose interest and move on to some other flavour of the month.

The TS-101 is a closed system and while it will always be useful as
NAS, the USP of it hosting SlimServer may or may not be long term.

Hi Grumpy Git (that has been me over that last two weeks!)

Do you have an always on internet connection? The TS-101 is setup to
get the latest time every hour from an NTP server if the router you are
connected to is connected to the Internet. This should keep the time on
your SB accruate.

I'll ping Qnap though to see if it is a bug they are working on as
SlimServer takes the time from the system clock.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-27 Thread ultra238a

Hi Sanctum,

To the best of my knowledge the Qnap should have no adverse effect on
your network. I myself run a Linksys wireless router with a mix of
ethernet, 802.11b and 802.11g connections (XBOX360, Squeezebox 1,
Squeezebox 2, XP laptop and Mac mini). Plus I also have a dynamic DNS
address pointed at the Qnap for Qdownload, Qweb, Qmultimedia and FTP.
Oh and SlimServer access and I don't have any traffic problems on the
network.

Now on my 10Mbit connection ;) I can get anything from between 85kb/sec
to 1124kb/sec download speeds - it really depends on the site and the
time of day I am using my connection. On a 2Mbit connection I would
imagine you could get no more than about 250kb/sec download speed and
most of the time it would be around 180kb/sec (or it was when I had a
2Mbit connection). Try out the speed checker on www.adslguide.org.uk
and see what results that gives you - remember though you are on a
shared line with a 20:1 contention.

Please either post here or PM me with your findings.

Hi,

As nobody else is experiencing slow performance using Squeezebox with a

that downloading torrents at the same time as using SlimServer will have
a performance impact.

Yes the TS-101 can handle multiple operations at once but please keep
in mind the specification of the box when trying to push it too hard.

I will try downloading a few torrents myself via my box and see how it
impacts the SlimServer operation and come back to you.

browser takes ages to respond (10-30 secs). This can't be normal. Yes I
might be downloading torrents with the QNAP at the same time (only 1 or

regard the SlimServer setup suitable for use.
I have no such performance problems running SlimServer on my laptop.

With respect to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Computing. I can hand on heart say
that Multitask are one of our best resellers on Squeezebox and Qnap in

getting the Qnap TS-101 with embedded SlimServer to market so lets
please not slag each other off on here. Stuart, as previously posted
kept as many of his customers (and people on here at my request when I
haven't been available) updated with information as we have it. Qnap
were supposed to launch the product last November which is when we
announced it and they put it back and put it back to make the product
better. As I have had the first sample out of Qnap last September I can
assure you the wait has been worth it compared to what they were going
to launch.

@ David Inniss
The reason the firmware update didn't work on your unit was because you
had tried to reformat the hard drive and you had deleted all of shares
that had been created by the system. I have spent hours on the phone
with you talking you through trying to get your unit set back up and
working correctly. I have spoken to you out of working hours and at the
weekend. You have my mobile number which you have called me on and I
have spoken to you - even when I should have been putting my children
to bed or spending some time with my family.

I have already told you we will have the unit back and reconfigure it
for you. We currently don't have any 200Gb models in stock to replace
yours with so it will need to be reconfigured. I suggest you wait for

Hi Andrew,

It all depends on a number of issues I guess.

How many music files do you have in your collection?
Do you plan to get any more Squeezeboxes?

I personally have just over 10k music files on my TS-101 with a mixture
of MP3 192VBR and FLAC files. Plus I run currently 5x Squeezeboxes (a
mixture of SLIMP3, SB1 SB2). As reported the web front end on
SlimServer is more than useable but the UI on the Squeezeboxes works
just the same as if SlimServer was running on a PC.

Hope this helps.

To be honest I think you might be trying to push the box a little bit
too hard by playing FLAC files and copying files to the box at the same
time. Obviously the box is more than capable of being read and written
to by multiple users at the same time. I personally have had 6
Squeezeboxes playing different music files at once (mixture of wired
and wireless Squeezeboxes too). Some files were MP3 and some were
FLAC.

I personally think 7Mb/sec is quite decent on a 100Mbit network
connection as the maximum throughput on this connection is 12.5Mb and
taking into account other network traffic that may also be going around
at the same time it isn't too shabby.

The shares are still pretty slow (7MB/sec read and write) even over
gigabit ethernet. I guess maybe thats normal for this type of device
and gigabit ethernet support is more of a marketing thing. I'm still
 slightly disappointed though.

Playback seems to be working well (I'm using FLAC transcoded to WAV)
although I do get drop outs if I'm writing to a share at the same time.
I'm expecting it to be even better when they release a version of
SlimServer where native FLAC works properly.

The interface on the Squeezebox is very responsive (as long as I'm not
 writing to a share).

The web interface on the other hand is very sluggish. It takes roughly
5 secs (sometimes even longer) for the Browse Albums page to load. This
is even if I'm not playing anything. Does anyone have any suggestions
 for speeding it up?

2006-03-18 Thread ultra238a

Ok the firmware update has been tested and seems to be good to go so
anybody with a TS-101 can go to
http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update/ and download the firmware
update file.

The only drive I haven't tested it on yet is the 160Gb version that we
supplied but as we haven't sold many of these compared to the 200Gb,
300Gb, 400Gb and 500Gb versions I doubt it will be a problem seeing as
we have had such good results on the other drives.

Qnap have have classed this as a beta firmware update at this time and
is only for testing. If you have any issues with it direct them through
myself and I will bring them to Qnap's attention. They have also told me
though that this is likely to be the release build anyway as the results
have been excellent so far. I will post details of any further
amendments on here if there is another update that needs to be
downloaded.

Re sleep mode. I have had my TS-101 (1st sample that they ever shipped
to anybody) since September last year with a 300Gb HDD in it. Whilst
the firmware has changed the hardware is the same that you have today.
I have never had the hard drive set to go in to sleep mode and I have
had mine switched on 24/7 since I received it. It has only been powered
down or reset when applying install files. It gets warm but that is
always going to be the case due to the design of the case. I am more
than happy to leave mine switched on all the time ready to go.

Finally, thanks go to Qnap for fixing the issues with the HDD
compatibility so quickly (and saving my bacon) and to those who tested
the firmware for me last night.

Any questions or comments PM me please.

be able to do anything with them though because you have no way of
getting in to the box (at Qnap's request).

If there is a problem with the way we are doing things then please PM
me. If we have to take out AlienBBC then out it comes.

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-15 Thread ultra238a

Ok I am back in the UK.

I have been with Qnap over at CeBIT over the last couple of days and I
am waiting for an answer from their technical team.

Currently as it stands at the moment it seems like all of the problems
are being caused by incompatibilities between the HDD we have fitted
and TS-101. Neither are faulty.

I will make an announcement either tonight or tomorrow with regards to
what we are going to do to fix the problem. We are hoping that a simple
firmware fix will cure the problem but we may need to swap out the HDD's
we have installed.

Either way we will be controlling it from Progressive rather than
directly through your reseller.

I can only apologise for the fact that this has happened but please be
assured that we will be fixing the issue one way or another as soon as
possible.

Regards

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-10 Thread ultra238a

Sorry a amendment to the Qnap manual should have been sent out but was
missed out of the initial shipment.

The Qnap TS-101 comes from Qnap with out a drive. We have installed the
drive and set everything up so you can just plug in and go.

You do not need to go through any initial setup procedure as everything
has been done already for you.

You can plug your TS-101 in to any router or switch on your network as
long as there is somthing on your network giving out IP address via
DHCP (most routers are setup to do this). It doesn't matter if it is a
wireless router or a wired router as wireless router have wired
ethernet connection usually on the rear.

Please ask any questions on here.

Thanks

Paul

Our next consignment will be with us next week. All we have left in
stock at the moment is 160Gb versions. We will have more 500Gb versions
middle of next week and we should be in free stock on all models within
two weeks now all of the back orders have cleared.

Many thanks to all those who have ordered and waited patiently (and to
though who haven't but who have hung on in there regardless).

I will be over in Germany from Saturday till the middle of next week at

Ok it is all my fault now. I didn't realise that HDD's would take so
long to format!

Basically we are going to start shipping tomorrow. I am going to our
warehouse in the morning to finish off the last remaining units of
stock that need setting up to complete existing orders.

I will post links to pictures of actual stock being shipped tomorrow
just to prove that they are actually going out to you guys.

Orders for 300Gb 400Gb TS-101's will ship first followed by 500Gb,
160Gb 200Gb orders. I hope to get them all out tomorrow though we
won't have all of the tracking numbers till around 8:00pm GMT.

I will be posting pictures of the light at the end of the tunnel as
soon as our carriers have left the building with the stock :)

2006-02-26 Thread ultra238a

Ok the wait is nearly over!

Our first shipment of TS-101's is currently held in a depot at Heathrow
and will be delivered to us tomorrow morning (Monday). We intend to have
all back orders (end users and resellers) fulfilled on Tuesday. We will
have a small amount of stock left and we will be getting our next order
the week after.

AlienBBC will come pre-installed on the box but does have an impact on
the performance of the box. I personally have had two different streams
and MP3's playing from the TS-101 at the same time and the user
experience is still good.

I can only apologise for the delay in getting these boxes to market but
it has been out of our hands. I hope those of you who have one on order
enjoy your purchase when you receive it and give it favourable
reviews.

If you guys want to know anything else please either post on here or PM

[slim] Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-01-25 Thread ultra238a

Ok firstly my apologies for not posting any updates on here recently. We
are still recovering from the Christmas period and there just doesn't
seem enough hours in the day.

The current situation with the Qnap TS-101 is that the Qnap firmware is
now finished and the product is ready to ship. The only problem we now
have is that it is now the Chinese New Year so nothing is happening in
China for the next two weeks.

This product was promised to be with us mid-October 2005 as a lot of
you are aware. Qnap want to make sure that this product is the best it
can be for the wider audience and this has caused the delay in us
launching our version running Slim Server - regardless of if you want
their features or not.

We are nearly there. It is looking like our shipment will now go out on
the 15th February and we will ship a couple of days after they land with
us.

Thank you for your patience.

[slim] Re: Qnap server or best option

2006-01-25 Thread ultra238a

The way the script works is when there is a new release of the software
there will be a Qnap version also. You drop this in the update
directory that will be on the HDD and reboot the machine. An internal
script will then pick up the file on reboot and install the new version
of the software.

Fairly straight forward and easy to do for all levels.

2005-12-13 Thread ultra238a

Hi,

The current situation for the Qnap TS-101 is that we will be getting a
delivery leaving them on the 20th and into us on the 23rd December. We
will be shipping them as soon as we can but realisticly we aren't going
to get them out for Christmas but between Christmas and the New Year.

I have tried to get some units out of them early as the delay has been
caused by issues with their front end software and not our installation
(which is independent of their front end software) but it couldn't be
worked out.

We will be shipping as soon as possible and I will keep you all
informed on here as to when we ship out the first units.

As Patrick and Sean have said already, they are working as fast as they
can to get stock out of the door to not only us but other customers

I can assure you that as soon as the stock arrives with us we

our end user customers.

As for Audio-T, their stock will be allocated out of our next shipment.
There were other orders from other customers before theirs.

Our next delivery is due with us on Friday though at this moment in

will ship as much stock out as possible.

2005-11-22 Thread ultra238a

Andy,

Dabs.com now have white wired and wireless in stock and I am sure other
retailers will be showing white stock as well now.

We received a small amount of black wireless SB3 today and they were
shared out evenly between everybody who had back orders with us. Not
all back orders were cleared. We are expecting more next week.

Importing from SD in the US is fine. The service is availble to be
used. Keep in mind though if anything goes wrong you will have to send
it back to the US as we won't honor the warranty on an imported
product. Also the couriers tend to get quite busy this time of year
with end user deliveries and tend to send out the VAT and handling
charge bill after the event.

Hope this helps your decision.

:) Don't worry it will be coming today.

As will the Qnap TS-401T with up to 2TB of storage out of the box and
Slimserver 6.2!

With reference to the 64Mb memory in the TS-101. I have had 5x
Squeezeboxes streaming different MP3 files from the box without any
problems.

Both the web interface and the Squeezebox interface are very responsive
and work quickly.

FLAC files play fine also.

2005-10-25 Thread ultra238a

The TS-101 runs a flavour of Ubuntu Linux and we are currently getting
all of the plugins that we can running on the box as standard.

The TS-401T is x86 based so we should have no problems running any of
the plugins on that box.

[slim] Re: The 'Perfect' Remote?

2005-10-24 Thread ultra238a

As it is Win.CE based then it could be made to run something like
softsqueeze to act like a Sonos like controller.

Only problem being that I best it will cost as much as the Sonos
starter system :S

[slim] Re: netgear low cost nas

2005-10-20 Thread ultra238a

Nice looking product but I doubt it would be powerful enough to run
Slimserver well enough for most people.

Plus I doubt Netgear would be willing to open it up to 3rd party
applications to be run on it. Saying that I am sure it could be
hacked.

Question: Who wants a Squeezebox Boombox?

- I'm interested.
- No, thanks.

Has anybody had a look at the Saitek Audio A250? (www.saitekaudio.com)

Nice design but uses Bluetooth 2 instead of WiFi. That would be a cool
design to get the SB mainboard into.

The audio side of things has been designed and tuned by Mission in the
UK.

[slim] Re: Linkstation Rescan?

2005-10-20 Thread ultra238a

Your box is using a 200/266Mhz CPU with 64Mb of memory - it ain't going
to get any quicker. Just set it to run over night from the web front
end at say 2:00am then you won't notice it.

[slim] Re: UK Publicity: Squeezebox2 on The Gadget Show CH5

2005-10-05 Thread ultra238a

Totally agree that any publicity is good for Squeezebox - I just can't
stand the guy who did the section. I have seen some of the other stuff
that he has done and I always get the feeling he a bit condescending
which is strange as he comes over as knowing sweet FA!
