[slim] Wireless Range Expander with Duet Controller
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this post -- there doesn't seem to be a dedicated network issues forum, so I guess general is as good a place as any. I've discoved that plaster walls combined with the chimney running through the middle of my house is not a friendly setup for WiFi. Or, at least it weakens the signals enough to cause problems for my SBC. In hopes of solving this, and to pave the way for getting WiFi out to the deck for a future Boom, I picked up a Linksys wireless range expander (WRE54G). This is mated with my Linksys WRTP54G -- one of their routers with VOIP built in. Both are using the same SSID and same WPA settings. They see each other and life is grand. But not quite. I had hoped that the WRE54G would just boost the signal throughout the house. But now I've come to understand (I think) that a WiFi device such as the SBC attaches itself to a particular access point. So if I'm close to my router when I turn on the SBC, it links itself to the router. And similarly, if I'm close to the range expander when I turn on the SBC, it links itself to the expander. But if I move from one side of the house to the other, the SBC doesn't roam with me -- it holds on to that original (now very weak) connection. Is there someway to make the SBC wander and grab the stronger access point's signal as I move throughout the house? If not automated, is there a way to manually force the controller to reconnect to the other AP without cycling the SBC's power? One other quick note, I have version 3 of the WRE54g which does not allow you to use a different SSID than the router's. Older versions allowed this, which could have been a potential (albeit messy) solution, but no dice. Any ideas? Or am I doing something obviously wrong with this configuration? Re: [slim] Does SC run smoothly on an Asus eee Box?
I'll throw my two cents in and day that I'm amost positive an EEE Box would work find for a SC server. I've not used an EEE Box, but am running Squeezecenter on a very underpowered rig: mini-ITX platform with a VIA Eden fanless 600mhz CPU, 256mb RAM, WinXP, and a ton of hard drive space. Performance with a Duet bundle has been generally fine, as long as you don't need to use the web SC interface. At times (not often) the Controller is slow to respond or bring up a sub-menu, but I expect that given the architecture. As I said, I'm using this to run a Duet bundle currently, but intend to expand with an additional SBR and Boom in the near future. I worry that syncronizing and streaming to multiple players will be too much of a strain for this little server, and am considering an EEE Box as a longer term solution. If a VIA Eden, which is a 5 year old low-power design, can run one player fine, the modern Atom platform should be more than sufficient for any SC needs. -- ajkidle ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54591 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Receiver bridged mode networking
The controller (and other devices) do not curerntly support wireless roaming. There is an open bug for this that is supposed to be addressed with release 7.3. I have a wireless range expander, and from what I can tell the controller grabs the stonger signal when it is turned on, and holds onto it until it loses that signal completely. The preferred method of operation would be that it scan for a stronger signal in the background and switch (seamlessly) when one becomes available. I'm looking forward to this feature. Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
I debated starting a new thread for this, but I'll stick with this one and try not to add to the clutter. Two things that are not ready for primetime: wireless networking and the Controller. Maybe that's overstating things a bit, but I'm frustrated. And let me also state that I love my duet. Love. When it's working. When it's not working, it makes me want to hurt someone. My setup: Windows XP running SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 (connected via ethernet to the router) Linksys WRTP54G (the Vonage router) Linksys WRE54G (wireless range expander) Using DHCP and WPA 1 SBC (7.2 r3191) 2 SBR's, one is via ethernet to the router, the second is wireless Everything seems to work (mostly) fine when I'm associate with the router. It's with the second access point (the range expander) that causes things to get flaky. I know the secondary AP is working, and has a reasonably strong connection to my router -- my primary computer connects to the web via the range expander, works fine. But the SBC doesn't see the rest of my network when it is associated with the range expander -- it can't find the XP box running SC and it can't find either of my SBR's. The SBR that I use wirelessly seems to connect fine via the range expander...it's just the controller that has issues. I'm not 100% certain this is a Squeezebox issue, could be my network setup. But it seems odd to me that other wireless devices work, and it's really only the controller that causes me grief. So I'm left to wonder: 1 - Are range expanders a bad way to go? Do they in someway just complicate the network? I'm not impressed with Vonage, maybe it's time for a new router...but I'll need something with strong range to deal with the plaster walls and chimney in the middle of the house. Any suggestions? 2 - are more network fixes coming for the controller with future software releases? 3 - would static IP's help? Or would that be a lot of hassle for nothing? Maybe my SqueezeBox just needed to rest... As of this morning (Sunday, Jul-27) everything works. I did nothing different, just turned it on and it started working. With regard to whether it was the latest nightly build or not, that's definitely not a dumb question. I downloaded whatever was available from the Slim site...I thought this was a nightly update, but maybe not (link shown below.) Is there another place to go for pre-release software? http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.1/ Danniboi - if you go to the link above and install version 7.1, that may fix things for you. (Yes, download it and install it on your laptop, or wherever you run SqueezeCenter from.) After installing, your controller should bug you to install new firmware -- let it. That seemed to work for me, although I'm having a little difficulty pinpointing what exactly fixed the issue. Should at least be a step in the right direction. -- ajkidle ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46357 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

When I go to the Now Playing selection on the controller's main menu, the status shows as Stopped. Nothing I do can get it to play. I've tried using the SqueezeCenter web interface directly, same results. I've rebooted, turned things off and on, etc. No luck. Everything was working fine last night, and I've not made any changes to the configuration since then. Incidentally, Pandora, Sirius, and my local music collection play just fine. Any ideas? [slim] Squeezebox with HDD?
Any chance that future version of the Squeezebox products would include a hard drive, similar to a DVR? My thinking is that this could be beneficial in a few ways: 1 - No computer required to run SqueezeCenter, just run it directly on the device. 2 - Could support services like Rhapsody-To-Go. This would be super cool for the Boom: the ability to unlock it from the constraints of being on a network and take your music with you. 3 - Store your music collection directly on the device. Instead of having to stream your local music from another computer on the network (which has to be powered on,) the SB could serve as the host. I'm sure I'm not the first to have this idea, but a quick search of the forums didn't turn anything up so I thought I'd throw it out there. Actual implementation could go a variety of ways: an HDD could be an option so as to keep the base price low, or maybe the deivce could just have a SATA or USB connection for people to add their own storage later if they want. Great products, by the way. [slim] Rhapsody Implementation Needs Improvement
Love Squeezebox -- have a boom, a duet, and an extra SBR. Great stuff, when it works. And it does just that for my local music and Pandora. But the Rhapsody implementation has been problematic, on and off again, since I bought my Duet shortly after it was released. It's generally a Time out waiting for data kind of error when trying to advance to the next track. Most often happens on the first track of an album, but lately has been happening mid-album with more frequency. I know in the past the finger has always been pointed at Rhapsody for these issues. And granted, their service is spotty. Fine. But let's take that as a given. Their service is poor and unreliable, so find a way to deal with it. I can normally hit rewind, or in someway manually force the desired track to play -- so it seems the Squeezebox software could do the same if the implementation were more robust. I don't know if that's means allowing for a longer time out, or more retries, etc. but why do I have to do it manually? Is this deserving of a bug report? As an aside, does anyone know if Napster is more reliable? Weird, maybe I'm the only one who has issues with Rhapsody. Can't understand how it could be my setup given that Sirius, Pandora, and my local FLACs play flawlessly. I'll give Napster a go -- although my first impressions are that it's missing some of the nice UI options that Rhapsody has, and the tagging seems odd an inconsistent. Maybe I'll get used to it over the next 29 days of the trial. Another issue I'm experiencing with Rhapsody is that it will cut out the last 5-10 seconds of a song and skip to the next track on the playlist. Not every song, maybe about 30% of the tracks I play. Maybe a buffering issue? Re: [slim] Rhapsody Implementation Needs Improvement
My point here is that Logitech should be doing more, and on two fronts: #1 - More robust code: 80%-90% of the time I can manually correct the playback issues by pressing rewind, or pause/play, etc. depending on which failure mode has occurred. If I can do it manually, the SC software can do it too. We just need more robustly written error handling routines. Of course it would be preferred to not burden SC code with this, but the reality is that Rhapsody's service requires it. And bottom line, I can't with clear conscience recommend a Squeezebox Rhapsody combo to a non-technophile given its track record of reliability (or lack thereof.) Which brings me to point #2... #2 - Bang some heads together at Rhapsody: It's seems Rhapsody doesn't really care about (or isn't responsive to) the end consumer. There are threads all over these forums, the Sonos forums, and Rhapsody forums complaining about reliability, and they've been on-going for well over a year. The big-wigs at Logitech need to be taking this issue to their business partners at Rhapsody. It makes everyone look bad when it doesn't work. Although I wonder if this is just such a miniscule portion of Rhapsody's customer base that they don't care? Subscription based music is a huge selling point for Squeezebox. [slim] Poor Quality Internet
I like to bring my Boom and SBR with me when we visit the parents, problem is their high speed internet isn't very fast or reliable. Both Rhapsody and Pandora require re-buffering frequently enough to make them unlistenable for more than a song or so. I've connected the Boom via ethernet (to rule out flaky WiFi issues,) confirmed there are no other devices eating up bandwidth, and still have problems with both Pandora and Rhapsody. To me, this indicates poor internet service. This same setup works fine at my house, on an 18 Mbps connection. When I go to speedtest.net, the numbers vary from test-to-test, but I seem to generally get: Ping = 70 - 100 ms (although once it came back at 1200 ms) Download = 0.7 - 0.9 Mbps Upload = 0.12 Mbps So my questions: - Is it unreasonable to expect to maintain a 192 kbps stream on such a connection? - How does the ping latency come into play? - Is there anything I can do from my end, without complaining to the ISP? I've tried increasing the Radio Station Buffer in SqueezeCenter, but it seems to have no effect. It doesn't even seem to buffer the amount I set it to. (Example, I can set it to buffer 15 seconds, and still experience 2 drop outs in a 10 second span of time.) Any ideas or suggestions for improving this are much appreciated. [slim] Router Upgrade Questions
I've got a junky old Linksys 11g router, looking to upgrade. Was hoping some of the more knowledgeable network gurus here could offer some tips. Some questions I have: Is the official ratified 11n spec sufficiently different from the draft spec, such that we should expect a new wave of official 11n routers? And when this happens, will it just be marketing hype, or will the functionality and hardware actually be different? The motivation for my upgrade is to improve range. Throughput is of secondary importance. (Squeezebox is my primary application of wireless, I'll need to buy a few dozen more players before I max out what 11g can handle.) I've not found much good info for routers with remarkable or standout range -- any suggestions on this front? I expect whatever router I buy will be in use for the next several years, so I don't mind spending a little extra to get a quality product. Are there brands or models known for being especially high quality, professional grade, etc.? I like the idea of using DD-WRT on the Linksys routers, but am worried about the lack of external antennas. Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore
Apologies if this has already been asked. I looked for it and didn't find anything. I'm having trouble with the ADD mode. I want to add individual songs to the end of my playlist, which I understand is what this is supposed to do. Works as described for my local FLAC library, but does not work with Rhapsody. When I try to add a specific Rhapsody track, the whole album is appended to the end of my playlist. All the tracks that I didn't select show up as having length of 0:00, the track I did select shows up as expected. But when it advances to the next track, all the 0:00 get their real length, and it starts playing from track #1 of the album I chose a song from. Makes it difficult to create playlists... Any ideas? I have iPeng Play single tracks set to ON. Also have Squeezeboxserver set to play individual songs. Running SBS 7.4, Ubuntu 9.04, iPeng 1.2, and iPhone OS 3.1.2. Two SBR's and a Boom playing in sync. I understand why the Controller gets a bad rap, but why the Receiver does too is beyond me. I've been running 2 of them for over a year without issue. One wired, the other wireless. Only problems I've had have been related to weak WiFi signal, surely more a function of my junky router and placement, not the fault of the Receiver. Right now I can't get any of Tom Petty's new Live Anthology to play, although other albums play fine. Suppose I'll shoot a note to Real support, an oxymoron if there ever was one. Re: [slim] Logitech should hire Pippin! Those having difficulty w/Controller should get iPeng.
There are many reasons it might not be a good idea for Logitech to formally hire Pippin (namely, Pippin may not be interested.) However, I believe Logitech would be well served by formally sponsoring and branding the iPeng app. To a new customer, I think it looks sloppy that the app is (1) not free and (2) not associated with Logitech in any way. Full disclaimer, I own iPeng, love it, was worth every penny, etc. I am not arguing that Pippin should not be compensated for his fantastic app. Rather I'm trying to look at it from the perspective of someone not already immersed in the Squeezebox community / mindset. We on this board understand the power and benefit of the open source approach, but the masses do not. And for my 2 cents, I think it gives the appearance (on the surface) of not being a fully integrated, credible, and clean solution that Logitech is not formally associated with the app. Again, I mean no criticism of Pippin or iPeng here, rather that Logitech's strategy on this front could be improved. -- ajkidle 2x SBR, Boom, Radio, iPeng ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72308 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I don't expect iPeng or any other 3rd party development would be automatically improved by Logitech taking ownership, and agree that the opposite is a real risk. However, I'm already a Squeezebox devotee hook line and sinker, read these boards daily, and love to tinker with this stuff. So given that, I have no issue or discomfort with iPeng being 3rd party. But from a broader perspective, considering potential new customers, I think it's a detriment to the product line that the iPhone app isn't directly associated with Logitech. And without reading these boards, one could reasonably come to the conclusion that a non-Logitech app isn't going to work as well as an official app (i.e. Sonos.) Although I'm not a developer (wish I had the time to develop those skills,) I echo the benefits that could be derived from better and more consistent support for 3rd part development. [slim] Network Diagnostic Tool
Based on my time reading these boards, it strikes me that a lot of the issues people have with their Squeezebox setups are related to WiFi or network setup. I'm surprised Logitech doesn't include some form of network diagnostic tool that could address this (or at a minimum a one-sheet summary of tips for proper network setup.) I'm envisioning a tool that could: 1 - Identify the user's WiFi network, scan for other networks in the area, suggest optimal channel setting based on scan. 2 - Identify all Squeezebox devices connected. If a player is missing from the list, suggest ways to get it connected. Perform throughput test on all players, callout if any may have streaming issues based on results. I know most of this can be done piecemeal with existing tools, and with help in the wiki and on these boards. But it seems it would reduce the load on Logitech's tech support and reduce new-user frustration if an all-in-one diagnostic/setup tool existed. (I'd take a stab at developing it but don't have the know-how.) [slim] Alarm and Sync Groups
Is there a way to force a player to go into off status when not in use? I ask because I am bothered by how the alarms works when players are sync'd -- that is, all sync'd players sound the alarm together, unless they are off. Although I generally like music playback within my house to be sync'd, I don't need everyone getting up at 5am with me. And I don't want to have to remember each night to manually turn off each player. I've read discussions about very complicated solutions with sync groups (establishing new groups, breaking the alarm player out of the group temporarily, etc.) but it seems an easy solution would be to have players switch from standby status (paused or stopped) to off status when not in use. I define not in use as no music playback after some user-defined amount of time -- I wouldn't want my players turning off every time I pause a track. So say after an hour of no playback, the players turn off. Then only the player where the alarm was set will sound in the morning. To get music up and running throughout the house, all I would need to do is turn on the players. So back to my original question: is this currently possible, and I just haven't stumbled upon the setting? -- ajkidle 2x SBR, Boom, Radio, iPeng ajkidle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18929 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74421 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] New Setup: Can't Access Pandora or Rhapsody
Have recently moved and am getting everything re-setup. (Top priority, of course, was to get the Squeezebox gear up and running.) Local music is working fine, but none of the players can access Pandora or Rhapsody. I have internet connectivity via my laptop, and even SuperDateTime works, so SBS is able to access some internet data. Here's the basic setup: ATT Uverse - I don't like the flaky wireless router built into their gateway, so I'm using my own Linksys behind the gateway - This means I have a 192.168.1.x from the gateway and 192.168.2.x from the Linksys - All Squeezeboxen are on the 192.168.2.x (as is the SBS running on a MacBook) - Everything is running wireless, SBS 7.5.0 I think it has something to do with my double-router setup (the .1.x and .2.x addresses.) ATT claims the gateway will recognize router behind router and adjust accordingly, and that seems to be true as everything else works with respect to internet connectivity. It'd also be convenient for wiring a Squeezebox, but herein lies the problem. The U-Verse assigns address on 192.168.1.xxx while my Netgear router assigns them on 192.168.2.xxx. Should these two be able to talk to each other? My VortexBox is on 192.168.2.150 (hard wired to the Netgear ethernet) and my Boom can't connect to it from a 192.168.1.xxx address. Re: [slim] Network Architecture Question
Let me throw in one additional wrinkle. Due to the physical constraints of the house, it may be necessary to add a switch to this setup. Wondering if such a network design is horribly flawed. The connections would be: U-Verse Gateway -- Netgear Router (configured as an access point) -- Netgear Switch -- Hard Wired Devices Both the router and the switch would be gigabit, the gateway is 100 Mbps. Some devices would connect directly to the gateway via 100 Mbps ethernet, some directly to the router via 11n, and some to the switch via 1 Gbps ethernet. None of the traffic is particularly demandind in terms of bandwidth -- squeezeboxen, internet, an occassional file transfer between machines. Networking is not my strong suit. [slim] A Ripping Conundrum
Hi all. I'm a recent convert to the VortexBox platform, having built myself a little Atom rig. It works as desired except when it comes to ripping tagging. I have a fair amount of obscure music and (legal) bootlegs that require manual intervention to get the tag data correct. As such, I find myself really missing dbPowerAmp and mp3tag in this new setup. I also believe the ripping methodology used by dbPowerAmp to be more robust (although we don't need to debate that here.) Looking for suggestions to bring these pieces of software back into my setup. At my disposal, I have the headless Atom rig and a MacBook (running Snow Leopard, if it matters.) I remote into the Atom with the MacBook either via ssh or the web interface if I need to tinker with it. Is there someway to get dbPowerAmp to run on the VortexBox machine? When I had an Ubuntu box I used Wine without issue, but given that VortexBox is command line only I don't know how to do this (if it's even possible.) Another possibility is to buy a copy of Win7 and use Boot Camp to install it on the MacBook, thus allowing me to run dbPowerAmp.
