[Elecraft] KAT500 Suggestions
Eric and Wayne, To optimize desktop space I suggest the upcoming KAT500 be designed so that its tilt stand arm can be installed in either the front (normal) or back of the unit. That way if I set it atop a front tilted KPA500 I could raise the back of the tuner to offset the tilt, which would a nice. And, it would be great if I could switch between the two coax feedlines that I have set up. Sure, this would require software differentiating the antenna switching by the K3 and antenna switching by the tuner. However, it would simplify operation and greatly reduce the possibility of me using the wrong antenna. BTW, the KPA500 kit is working FB. Congratulations to all. [Elecraft] OT: Happy 60th Anniversary Novice License
Hi All: Sorry for being off topic but today is a special day in ham radio history. Today is the 60th anniversary of the novice license. This is the license most of us who were licensed before 1991 started off with. Starting in 2000, no more new licenses were issued; though holders could renew. July 1, 1951 is when its started. That was a Sunday. The next day was when the first novice exams were given, at FCC offices. It took about 3 weeks for those licenses to arrive. At first the Novice sub-band on 80M didn't have too many people on it. If you are interested in reading more please read my column on Novice history in QCWA Journal or to be part of the history share your novice story or post your picture on the Novice Historical Society's website, www.novicehistory.org. [Elecraft] K2 BFO problem, need JFET advice
Symptom: K2 with very low audio output, only the strongest stations can be copied. Have eliminated the BPF, attenuator, pre-amp, and so forth with signal tracing. Transmit stops increasing at about 4W, the control runs out of effect. So the K2 is alive, but something is wrong in the signal path. The BFO area was redone with a mod (which I have no paperwork on, somebody else's radio). The components were dead-bugged onto the area around the T33 BFO toroid, and I believe they shorted out on the bottom cover. Using the included kit RF probe, test point TP2 has only 1 millivolt on it, but Q24 has about 0.4Vrms on the gate, which is fed from U11 pin 6 and through the BFO components. Thus, it appears to be a blown Q24, which is a JFET J310. Radio Shack has a MPF102, would that be OK to use? I've checked the respective datasheets of J310 vs MPF102, and I haven't found much difference in ratings, even the noise figure is about the same. [Elecraft] [K2] K6XX zero beat indicator and the Spot function
Thanks for all that have responded. I've installed a 100 K series resistor in the audio input as suggested. The problem continues, however. In messing around with the unit, I attached an EZhook cliplead to the audio input at the board-connector. The cliplead is attached to a wire about 1 ft long with another EZhook at the end. Nothing is attached to the other end, however. When this is done, the indicator works correctly, with no-signal responses to very few noise bursts and correct operation on signals, at full RF gain. The cliplead seems to be injecting noise into the audio line. If the other end is connected to a 1 M resistor to ground, the needless blinking resumes. This suggests that the K6XX board may be defective. Further ideas would be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K6XX zero beat indicator and the Spot function
Chris, If the K6XX tuning indicator is turning the LED on when you have a tone in the audio of the correct pitch, then it is working just fine and is not defective at all. Your challenge is to find the correct resistor to reduce the number of false detects. The indicator requires only about 20 millivolts at the AF input to trigger, and you have more audio at the hot end of the AF Gain control than that. If the simple series 100k resistor did not do it for you, then you will have to construct a voltage divider of 2 resistors. You might try a 47k from the hot side of the AF gain control to the input of the detector and then another from the input of the detector to ground. That will reduce the audio input to the detector to half that at the AF Gain control. Vary the two resistors, keeping the total resistance in the vicinity of 100 k to keep the resistors from loading down the normal AF signal in the K2. You might want to connect a 100k pot initially (the detector input connects to the wiper) so you can adjust it until you are satisfied with the detector sensitivity, then measure the resistance from the wiper to each end of the pot and substitute fixed resistors for the pot. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/1/2011 10:52 AM, Christopher Kimball wrote: Thanks for all that have responded. [Elecraft] K3 6M problem
Hello: After returning my K3 back to the shack after Field Day, I have discovered that 6M no longer transmits with low SWR. I checked all the rear panel connections as it is interfaced through a microham MK2R+ and Stationmaster band decoder. However, I have the 6M antenna coax directly going to Antenna 2 on the radio. Using an antenna analyzer, the antenna shows excellent SWR. Using a dummy load to each antenna port, all bands shows good SWR except 6M. I updated the firmware and cycled the power but I still have the HI SWR showing with 6M. I do have the PR6 pre-amp in line, but the problem is not receive. I'm stumped. I keep having problems with my KAT3 finding a match. It always appears to be an issue that swapping the capacitance between the transmitter side and antenna side resolves the problem. In other words. when I can't get the correct match, I swap the capacitor position (using the configuration menu) and the subsequent matches are fine. Has anyone else seen this? Tom - The first item in the FAQ page on the qth.net site: *Q* - *I didn't get my monthly password reminder. What's wrong?* *A* - We turned off password reminders. They seem to cause us to have spam blacklist problems (some ISPs think we are spammers sending out so much mail at one time) and some users were confused about getting plain text passwords via e-mail. If you need to make changes to your subscription and you don't know your password, it is easy to ask for the password to be sent. At the bottom of the List Options http://mailman.qth.net/subscribers.htm#options page, there are instructions for getting a password reminder via e-mail. Re: [Elecraft] K2 BFO problem, need JFET advice
Tyler, Since you have low audio output during receive, I would suggest you are looking in the wrong place. Q24 is not involved during receive, and will show no signal at TP2 during receive. The 400 mV at the gate of Q24 is just fine. Put the K2 menu into CAL FCTR and then check the RF level at TP2 - it should be somewhere between 25 and 70 millivolts. You may be in for some Signal Tracing. Use the steps found in Appendix E of the manual. On 7/1/2011 10:45 AM, Tyler Barnett wrote: Symptom: K2 with very low audio output, only the strongest stations can be copied. Re: [Elecraft] K3: KPA100 Squeal
Geoff, It struck me when the squeal was first mentioned that something might be arcing over. If I understand correctly the squeal appears only when the 100w TX amp is - which narrows the search if arcing is the cause. If the 12 KHz squeal is present only when a tic is generated, and if arcing is the cause of the squeal, then a possible reason why this occurs is that the voltage in some circuit is ramping up to a voltage every 270 msec sufficient to cause something to arc over, which is heard as a tic plus squeal. It might be worth looking inside your K3 in a dark room. 73, Geoff GM4ESD On Friday, July 01, 2011 at 6:24 AM, Geoff Wolf AB3LS wrote: This is a brand new K3 that I assembled about a month ago. Re: [Elecraft] K3 6M problem
The weird part about this is that it hears great on 6M ! If the SWR was truly high, I shouldn't be able to hear squat. Normally I would tell you to connect your dummy load, enable the KAT3, tune into the dummy load then disable the tuner and try the antenna. I'm not sure how people might be divided, but it seems from this mailing list that there are desires for both Desktop and Remote units among the Elecraft base. The best of both Remote and Desktop worlds might be available (as an option?). That could be something along the lines of a Desktop (P3-sized?) unit with both tuning circuitry and controls on the front of the unit. Perhaps multiple antenna ports can be standard or an option. The tuning circuitry might be able to be removed (maybe switching as well) from the desktop unit and installed in a remote, waterproof enclosure. [Elecraft] One minor issue with the KPA500
My KPA500 is working like a champ with my K3 and AUX cable. But I noticed when BAND CHG is set to STBY (which I prefer in order to avoid tuning my dipole on the new band with 400 W instead of 20 W by mistake!), the KPA500 does go into STBY when changing bands but the K3 keeps the lower power setting and does not return to 100 W. This does not happen if BAND CHG is set to NOR. Anyone else noticed this? So I jerked it out of the truck and rigged it up in the shack and ran an SWR graph - less than 1.3:1 all the way. OK, so I hear FG5GP on 50.130 MHz and give him a call with 100 watts - no problem. He was 57 on my meter and he gave me a 57 report back. OK, so now I know something's afoot inside my K3. What do I need to do ? Most of you know Tom has been a major contributor to the success of both the K2 and K3. He's had some serious health issues lately and I'm concerned about him. Re: [Elecraft] K3 6M problem
I've been following this list for a decade now. One of the most popular uses of this list has been to bring general troubleshooting and repair questions here or just to explore why something happens. Faced with the unexpected, many of us turn to customer support as a last resort -- just as some open the manual as a last resort, Hi! And, in fact, there are a number of non-Elecraft employees here who know various aspects of the Elecraft rigs as well as the engineers who designed them. One example is Don W3FPR, but there have been others who have contributed a great deal to the Elecraft products over the years, suggesting and actually developing many design improvements to the K2 and K1 and other pre-K3 products. Many of their mods were documented here and tested by various list members who were unafraid to dig into their rigs. Some of those were later incorporated into the equipment design by Elecraft or made an official Elecraft mod. There are still a lot of solder jockeys here who remain a key part of that legacy although their numbers have been diluted by the many K3 owners whose interest is in operating, not tinkering inside the rig. Even so, many K3 owners have questions about how to interface their rigs with various external devices or how to find and utilize all the features built into the firmware. Many list members here step in to help them with information that the Elecraft support people are not likely to have or simply take the load off of Elecraft customer support. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I simply cannot understand why folks post to a general list rather than going to Elecraft in the first place? Hi Ron, I did contact Gary in Elecraft whenever I suspected there were hardware problems. This reflector is very valuable especially when I have questions on the operation of the elecraft radios. Apart from this, there are so many learnt and knowledgeable radio professions in this list that it is a good place to ask radio related questions. From time to time, you will see me in this reflector asking 'OT' questions. You may also remember that I did even ask 'tourist information for NYC' here. [Elecraft] OT: Happy 60th Anniversary Novice License
Thanks for the announcement. I didn't know when the Novice Class was created. I took mine in summer of 1958 (KN8MWA arrived Nov. 11, 1958), so I will have to wait a few more years for my 60th. My exam was taken before a General Class ham (My ham instructor-mentor) who's full name and call I have forgotten. His first name was Chuck and was a school teacher at a nearby town. Originally, was supposed to take Oboe lessons from him, but then I discovered he was a ham (and had a evening class for ham radio). I ended up buying his DX-35 to use with my Knight Ocean Hopper (3-tube regen rcvr) on 40m. A couple years later my dad bought a HQ-100 for me. Never learned to play the oboe, but did learn CW. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-60w, 3400-? [Elecraft] jt65 help with k3 after xp software reinstall
Dear Group I just had to reload all my software on my xp machine that I use with my k3 due to a nasty virus. Anyway I used to be able to use JT65-HF 1.07 with no problems at all. Now after my reinstall I am unable to make contacts. When sending a CQ or responding to a call the TX light is on, the output meters on the tuner and front panel show that I am transmitting the correct power. But no one hears me or responds. I am able to use other digital modes with hrd and dm780 and hrd controlls my PTT and it working. I am really confused and frustrated, I have reloaded the software several times, reloaded clock sync software and so on. I have played with output settings on the ALC and it makes no differencec, high watts out low qrp watts out and everything I can think of. Maybe there is a setting in the K3 where I have a TX offset, but I am on DATA A which I have checked my TX is on A not B so I have no idea on what to check next. Re: [Elecraft] jt65 help with k3 after xp software reinstall
H, sounds confusing, Don. Well, first let's make absolutely sure your clock is right. Click change time and date settings to get a second-by-second update. Then go to: http://www.time.gov/widget.html and make sure your time matches. If the time is correct and you're transmitting some power, the next thing to check is to make sure that the audio output of JT-65 is reaching your transmitter. An easy way to do this is to set the K3 meter to show ALC; then while transmitting, use the Windows volume control to keep advancing speaker volume and watch the ALC bars. When you get it to 6, back off about 1 1/2 bars. At that point, you are definitely sending properly synced JT65 -- at least I can't think of any reason why not. Re: [Elecraft] jt65 help with k3 after xp software reinstall
Hi Tony, You are brilliant, after running the widget and playing with the windows volume it started to work. I always had alc movement and had it set but for some reason it now works. Not sure what it was that did the trick but none the less it is now working. I also reinstalled all my sound card drivers so that could have been it also, however then I would have suspected that the non time sensitive modes would have not been working. So maybe it was the widget or volume reset but in any case after doing all those things listed above I finally made a contact after spending all day on this wonderful windows thing. Re: [Elecraft] K3: KPA100 Squeal
I get this while in TX test mode, 5W, 100W, anything. And yes this squeal is only present when the 100W amp is physically installed (KPA nor or not inst in the config menu) The squeal is present constantly when in TX mode. The ticking I was describing was keying up the radio in QSK CW with some dits and dahs. There's a pretty profound click between RX and TX. If I key the radio up in LSB in TX test mode the squeal is present 100% of the time while in TX, no matter if there's modulation, power going out, etc. I'll do my best to see if anything is arcing. And to an unnamed comment earlier on, I can hear this squeal at the other end of a decent sized room, I'm not making this stuff up. Re: [Elecraft] One minor issue with the KPA500
Richard, I noticed the same thing with my new KPA500. I searched the archives and found this note from Jack at Elecraft. Dave, N4QS This is a timing problem in the communications, and will be fixed in the next firmware release. Jack Brindle, W6FB Elecraft Engineering On Jun 7, 2011, at 10:05 AM, John K3TN wrote: If I hit the Oper/Stby buttons on the KPA500, the K3 displays a message and selects the proper power drive level. However, I've enabled BAND CHG to STBY, which switches the KPA500 to STBY whenever I change bands. It does that, but going to STANDBY by changing bands does NOT send the STBY message to the K3, so the K3 drive level stays at the OPER level, even though the KPA500 is in STBY. Shouldn't the KPA500 tell the K3 it has gone to standby via QSY? That would keep things in synch better. [Elecraft] P3 #1444 is alongside K3 #1544
All I can say is wow, what a great addition to an already great transceiver. This evening I was able to do the output buffer mod (comes with the P3 as it turns out, so I have an extra set of parts now), install the KXV3a, and assemble the P3. All plus required calibration, etc. and I'm up and running. My only comment would be that installing the KXV3a would be a little easier if PEM nuts were used with the back panel screws, that one down in the corner is tough to reach with a lockwasher and nut... Now I have something new to play with over the holiday. Actually bypass for the ATU is less bypass that one might sometimes hope for and there have been times where even when in bypass the SWR of a dummy may not look good however enabling the ATU, tuning, and then going back into bypass can solve this issue. [Elecraft] Problem with K3Util v1.4.1.8 on Ubuntu Linux
I recently changed Linux distros from CentOS (Red Hat derivative) to Ubuntu 11.04. I haven't been on the air lately because the December blizzards took down my antenna so I didn't notice that the K3 Utility has problems when running on this distro using the Classic desktop. The problem is that I can't click on buttons and get a response. When I reset my desktop to the new, but awful, Unity desktop K3Util runs properly. Does anyone know of a workaround besides logging off, resetting the desktop and then logging back on (only to have to reverse the procedure to get back to the superior Classic desktop)?
