Re: [Elecraft] P3

2023-12-17 Thread Brian Hunt
Hi Jim,
I’ve discovered that it’s easier to see a very weak signal on the waterfall
than in the amplitude plot. Setting the SVGA screen for 25% spectrum and 75%
waterfall gives lots of space to see dim traces. You may have to adjust the
threshold a bit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Erratic receive

2023-11-29 Thread Brian Hunt
According to the schematics, those two double pots on the front panel are
merely voltage dividers. They provide 0 to 5v signals to the front panel MCU
which controls the function, eg: AF_GAIN. It’s possible the pot has developed a
dropout right at the point where you usually set the AF level. Maybe turning
the pot stop to stop a half dozen times will improve it?? Worth a try.

There was a time when one could email Elecraft support with the K3 serial

Re: [Elecraft] Manual For KX2 S/N 01888?

I bought my KX2 #11xx in November 2016, to give you a data point on age. In
addition to Mike’s info, I’d suggest downloading the firmware release notes

Hope you enjoy your KX2; it’s a gem.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-07-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Kevin,
You were good on 20 meters with some deep QSB but OK copy. Then we got whacked
by the sun pretty hard between nets and the story changed on 40 meters. I could
hear you at first but your signal was below the noise peaks so your CW was
getting chopped up and nearly uncopyable.

Hoping for better next week!

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

2023-05-20 Thread Brian Hunt
I had a similar problem and traced it to voltage sag under load at the K3. The
power supply was good under load but there was too much loss in the stock cable
which was wired directly to the PS. I replaced it with a heavier, shorter
cable. I found that I had to run the TX gain calibration twice in a row to get
it right. It’s been fine since.

Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s

2023-01-24 Thread Brian Hunt
I’d like clarification on this also. I don’t run an amp but I’ve run my K3 for
years at 5 watts for QRP events without issue. My TUN PWR is set to 7 watts to
keep my remote tuner and LPA happy.

The manual states that to manually initiate a TX GAIN calibration to set TUN
PWR to exactly 5 (or 50) watts and hold the TUNE button. I can imagine that
accidentally doing so into an antenna rather than a 50 Ohm dummy load could
really mess up the TX GAIN calibration.

Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Noise Reduction

2022-11-06 Thread Brian Hunt
There was a very good description of the K3 NR written by Lyle, the DSP
designer for Elecraft. It may be on their website.

Basically, as I understand it, the NR is designed to work against random noise.
Noise that has a correlated component, like line noise, it doesn’t address as
well.

I’ve found that, properly adjusted, it works very well on CW but using it on
SSB created unacceptable “mush” on the audio.

Hopefully the spectral subtraction NR when available on the K4 will be much
better.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

Like you I’m 99% CW OP but for years I’ve used inexpensive (~$20) computer
headsets with my K3. Light weight and don’t clamp your head. Comfortable to
wear for hours. They’re a bit hard to find these days because most are
Bluetooth. The K3 TXEQ can make it sound good.

I might add that the computer is an old Win7 desktop running Win10. Definitely

Re: [Elecraft] K3 / N1MM Keying and rig control

2022-10-14 Thread Brian Hunt
I have been using a USB-to-serial converter cable for connection between the K3
and computer running N1MM+. I use DTR keying on the K3 with VOX and QSK on.
This leaves the K3 internal keyer and paddle free to use at a different speed
for fills, etc.

I have noticed the CW timing from the computer to falter a bit once in a while
depending on what else the computer is doing at the time. I try to minimize the
number of apps running. Typical CW speed is 22-32 wpm so I don’t know how it
would do faster than that.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question on S-Meter Calibration

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.

According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’ve been using the SMTR ABS mode ever since I discovered it. YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
Sounds like a thermal problem, possibly with the 8v regulator. I have a problem
with my K3 (S# 4K range). If the rig is cold ~60 F the 8v apparently goes out
of regulation evidenced by the display illumination dimming on key down. The
rig works normally otherwise. The problem goes away once the FP Temp warms a
little - I wrote the number down somewhere but can’t find it now.

Good luck & 73,

Check the “Shipping Status” link on the Elecraft home page. It shows the
shipping status on virtually all their products. It’s updated when there are
changes. KPA-1500 is shown as in stock, no doubt updated in the last few days.

Re: [Elecraft] AX-1 -- with and without counterpoise

2022-09-26 Thread Brian Hunt

Ha!  I did the same thing last night only with slightly parameters:

0.2 inch diameter 4 ft. rod (average diameter of AX1?) with the base 5
ft above average ground.  Counterpoise (#18 wire) drops 4 ft from the
feed point then trails out 9 ft to about 2 inches above ground. The base
loading coil was 11.3 uH with a 6.7 ohm series resistor for a Q of 150.

Not surprisingly, the gain plot showed best gain in the direction of the
counterpoise: -0.37 dBi at 30 degrees elevation.  Gain in the opposite
direction was -4 dBi.  So if you are in a QSO with someone, you should
be walking away from them. :-)   SWR at 14.050 MHz resonance was
calculated at 3:1.

Interesting exercise!

I modeled something similar to an AX1 with EZNEC last night.  I used a
base loaded 4' length of 1/2 inch diameter tubing for the whip, a
roughly 10 uH coil with a Q of 200 (25 turns, 1.5" diameter, 3"
length), and a 13 foot #14 counterpoise wire.  It was oriented
vertically with the bottom end of the counterpoise wire being 2 feet
above "typical" ground.  The frequency was about 14.1 MHz.

It looked surprisingly decent for both SWR and field pattern ... only
about -2 dBi ...  although of course we should be suspect of the
accuracy for a model that severe.

The calculated field strength without the counterpoise wire was about
-10 dBi, but that's clearly unrealistic because the SWR was 700 (no
exaggeration).   In practice I'm sure that other things (human body,
coax shield if used, proximity of the rigs case to ground, etc) have a
moderating effect, and they all likely introduce additional loss.  I
don't think there is any way that EZNEC can accurately model something
like that, and we also have the issue of how much loss there might be
in the tuner trying to match such a difficult load.

Thus the urge to do a real world test, although I'm coming to believe
that no matter how hard I try, it probably isn't possible to control
proximity effects well enough for the case without the counterpoise
wire to get a truly definitive comparison.  That SWR of 700 in the
model was because the feedpoint had a capacitive reactance of 35,000
ohms (!!).  It is certainly debatable whether that figure is accurate,
but there can be no doubt that it is very high.   A ballpark
comparison is therefore about the best I expect whenever I find myself
able to do the test.

Re: [Elecraft] switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones

2022-07-23 Thread Brian Hunt
Pretty simple home brew project, I would think. Four stereo jacks, a DPDT
switch, a small box and a capacitor should do it. The capacitor is to block the
mic bias from going to the Signalink. You would still likely have to adjust
levels whenever switching. Would take some study to get all the connections
right.

Kevin,
For option 3 you might take a look at the groups.io linuxhams. A quick search
there unearthed xlog. Don’t know anything about it but the write up says
general and contest logging.

Dual booting the computer you want to use for contesting could be option 4. 

Potentially a solar panel. Any new installations nearby? Does it go away after
sunset?

I have an S9 noise signal on about 14036 with spurs on either side coming from

that section of the band tough to use. I think it’s Solar Edge but haven’t

Re: [Elecraft] Reset KX2 to factory settings.

2022-03-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Hopefully you saved the configuration using the KX2 Utility. If so, just reload
it.

In the manual, there is a table containing the menu descriptions and their
default options. Easy to go through and a good place to learn what they do.

EEINIT is described on page 56 of the manual. Basically the top line says DON’T
DO IT. If you do, you must have a configuration file to reload all the
calibration data and defaults.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K1 VFO reading

2021-11-26 Thread Brian Hunt
I think what you are seeing is probably typical. I have a K1-4 that tunes down
to 6988 and 13982 on 40 and 20 respectively. My tuning range is a little wider
at 93 kHz.

The Owner’s Manual has a detailed section on VFO alignment. If you didn’t get a
manual with the radio you can probably download one from Elecraft.

Good luck and have fun with this little beauty.

Re: [Elecraft] Choke for QRP with unbalanced antennas?

I use a large ferrite clamp-on to isolate my short whip/counterpoise from my

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with my KXPD2

2021-09-14 Thread Brian Hunt
The KXPD2 comes with two small hex-keys. The larger is fits the screws that
adjust the spacing. The smaller one is for the pivot screws to adjust the
setting of the pivot bearings. It sounds like your pivots are possibly too
tight or have dust in them. I would try loosening the pivot screws slightly to
see if that frees them up. The pivots should be set so the paddles move freely
but with no up/down looseness. Then set the spacing to taste. GL!

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-21 Thread Brian Hunt
I believe the trip temp. is 60c. The rate you get there, of course, depends a
lot on power setting, mode and ambient temperature. I’ve found at normal shack
ambient I can cycle FT8 pretty quickly at 7 watts. But I always monitor PA TEMP
and back it down if necessary. At the beach with a 55f breeze - no problem 

It’s a great little rig. Have fun!

Re: [Elecraft] KBPF3A switching frequencies and performance

2021-04-20 Thread Brian Hunt
This thread also got my curiosity up.  Several years ago I upgraded my
K3 #41xx with the KBPF3 including the 'A' mod of the capacitor on the RF
board.  I never really checked it out except for the 630 meter coverage
and transmit capability - both were as advertised.

Using a wideband noise generator (QRP Guys K7QO Noise Bridge) I tuned
from about 500 kHz up to 30 Mhz and was able to identify the filter
switch-over points (most of them anyway).  I measured the received noise
level using the P3 dBm scale.  At none of the switch points was the
noise level more than about 5 dB different from one side to the other.
By continuously tuning and watching the display, it was apparent that
the differences were mainly due to roll off of one filter segment or the
other.  The gain was uniformly consistent across each of the ham bands
but sometimes rolled off at the KBPF3 switch points.  The area between
7.41 MHz and 8.4 MHz is kind of no-man's land due to the first IF being
there.  At the IF frequency the gain was down >50 dB.

Re: [Elecraft] Inventorying a K3/P3

2021-03-29 Thread Brian Hunt
Dave,
There have also been numerous component adds/mods over the years. Three that I
did a couple years ago are 1. Increase the 12vdc accessory power from 500 ma to
1 A. Evidence is a 1A sticker on the rear of the K3. 2. Add a capacitor to the
KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are
installed. 3. Addition of a capacitor to the KBPF3 general coverage BPFs to
extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the
mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the
box. These are a bit inconsequential but add value to the K3.

Have you thought about asking Elecraft for the work orders for the K3’s S/N?

Good luck and thank you for helping out the family. Sorry you lost a friend.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Starts Off with Low Output on 10M

2021-02-28 Thread Brian Hunt
Nate,
A couple more questions:

Does the KX2 do the same thing on CW?

Did Elecraft say anything about doing a TX gain calibration? This can be done
with the KX2 utility although I haven’t done it on mine, just on my K3. It sets
the per-band gain coefficients Be sure to save the current CONFIG file so you
can restore it if needed. You will need a good dummy load an a stable power
source. The procedure is on p. 38 of the Rev A5 Manual.

Good luck,

The KX2 uses a control loop to set power. Make sure you have sufficient audio
drive to energize the loop. Using the ALC display set the MIC GAIN so you have
5-7 bars on voice peaks, per the manual.

What MIC are you using? Have you tried the internal MIC?

Re: [Elecraft] Mic headset for K3

2021-02-22 Thread Brian Hunt
I have two of the $16-20 Logitech computer headsets, one permanently plugged
into the back of my K3 and the other I swap between my KX2 and computer for
zoom calls. They each weigh about 4 ounces and I don’t feel like my head’s been
in a vice after wearing them for a couple hours. The good thing for us mic
neophytes is the mic is always in the right spot for consistent modulation
levels, etc. YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Anomalies

If you have listened to the VARA signal, you know it consists of a series of
tone frequencies sent in sequence. That could very well be driving the KAT500
nuts in AUTO mode. Training and then MANUAL is the solution. GL!

Will the NR "mixed mode" (NRmF5-x and above) where some of the

Re: [Elecraft] Recommended Power for K3/100 for 100% Data Modes

2020-05-22 Thread Brian Hunt
One thing you might check is whether or not your K3 has thermal pads between
the LPA transistors and where they bolt to the bottom cover. I ran across this
when doing some mods and the instructions said to reinstall them but my early
4xxx K3/100F didn't have them. When I asked the Elecraft tech he said they were
added because of the higher duty cycle digital modes. As a minimum make sure
those screws are tight.

Re: [Elecraft] No ALC Indication in DATA A mode with fldigi

2020-04-05 Thread Brian Hunt
Both the KX3 and KX2 have over voltage protection on the mic input. If the
input is too high mic input will be clamped to zero. When adjusting the audio
level, start with the mic/line gain all the way down and increase it slowly.
You should see the ALC increase. Stop when it reaches 4 bars with the 5th
flickering.

Since I don't do much data mode with my KX2 this feature bites me once in a
while. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Your opinion on K3s settings for best weak signal cw reception

2020-02-11 Thread Brian Hunt
I use an audio spectrum display - Spectrogram - to fine tune a barely there
weak signal. Set tuning rate to 1 Hz - the APF peak is less than 10 Hz. Set the
frequency cursor in Spectrogram to your pitch frequency. Set the DSP bandwidth
wide so the NR works effectively ~ 700 Hz. Use NR mode ~m5-3 so the APF has
some unprocessed signal to work on. It takes practice but works.

Re: [Elecraft] problem downloading new (current) firmware from kx3 FTP site.

2020-01-28 Thread Brian Hunt
Are you using Windows 10?  It has a fit when you try to download files
into its protected directories like  C:\Program Files (x86)\Elecraft\KX3

to place downloaded files somewhere in the User directory.  Windows
should accommodate this by setting up a directory in
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData.  Check that out and see if it helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Possible K3 over shoot on transmit

I saw this problem with my K3 #4xxx and discovered a large voltage drop between
the PS and K3 using the provided power cable. Cured the problem by: 1) shorter
& fatter power cable, 2) increased the PS (Astron 30A linear) to 14.5v, and 3)
running the K3 utility power calibration _twice_ back-to-back. Why it took 2x I
don't know but it's been 100% fine ever since.

Re: [Elecraft] Feature density of portable transceivers: K1 vs. KX2

2019-12-09 Thread Brian Hunt
I got 25 or so removal/installs out of the KX2 battery before one of the power
leads broke off where it entered the battery pack. I figured it was a
manufacturing defect where the wire fatigued without support of the insulation.

I replaced it with a 12v/5v 6 Ah lithium pack for about half of the cost of the
internal pack. It gives me 4-6 hours of use at 10 watts. Not as convenient as
the internal pack but it works for how I use my KX2.

Re: [Elecraft] Looking for volunteer to design a tiny CW transceiver for socially isolated kids/teens

2019-10-17 Thread Brian Hunt
Back when Halted Specialties Company (HSC) was in business in the SF Bay
Area I bought a PIXIE2e kit from them for $14.95.  It is a crystal
controlled direct conversion transceiver using only a 2N oscillator
and LM386 audio amp on a 1" x 2" PCB.  It came with crystals for 80m and
40m.  RF output 200-300 mW with a 9v battery. I never built it and dug
the kit out of my "archives."  I'd be glad to offer it up as a design or
evaluation candidate.

Hi all,

Someone recently told me that he'd benefitted throughout his life from learning
Morse code as a teen. Ham radio helped him cope. He's gone on to promote Morse
because it can help kids with certain cognitive or social issues. Such problems
are exacerbated by social media, these days. We all know of teens who've ended
up ostracized or worse.

He was wondering what the ham community may be able to do for them.

I proposed a simple ($5-$10), unlicensed CW transceiver (kit or assembled or both) that
would put out maybe 1 milliwatt. It would serve as a code-practice oscillator for solo
use. But with a short wire hanging from the PCB, kids could work "DX" -- like
across a room, or better yet, outdoors.

This got his attention. I went on to describe a scenario that he found very plausible,
based on his experience with Morse advocacy: You hand kids the little modules (just a PCB
with a built-in 4x AAA battery pack, code key, antenna wire, and cheap earbuds), and ask
them to try sending/receiving a few letters. The complete code would be silkscreened onto
the PCB. After they try this, you say, "Now see how far apart you can get and still
copy you friend's signal." This is where the magic happens, at least for those of us
who have been leveraging action-at-a-distance ourselves for many years :) It takes
things a step beyond ordinary code practice. Connects kids to other kids. At best it
could serve as a bridge to a world outside themselves.

I'm picturing the little rig as SA602 based, with one crystal for TX and one
for RX, running so little power than licensing is a non-issue. Frequency? TBD.
Something available in cheap fundamental crystals from Digikey. Each one would
have its crystals offset slightly from the others, so the effect of having a
number of them in one room might be a bit like being on a crowded CW band.
Picking out the pitch of a signal of interest and copying it is a skill many of
us have learned. I'm sure kids who are motivated would be able to do it as well.

It should not have debilitating clicks or thumps when keyed. The only control
should be for volume. It should be full break-in, which at this power level is
easily obtained.

This is a project I would gladly take on myself if not for my
greater-than-full-time commitments to Elecraft products. I'm hoping there's a
tinkerer out there with more free time who could start from a minimal
description and design the little rig. The gentleman I spoke to has been
frustrated over the years in trying to get his message out, and in trying to
find ways to take Morse code to a wider range of kids. He felt that this idea
had a lot of merit.

If you're interested in this project, or know of something that matches this
description that's already available, please contact me directly.

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 Loaded Whip Antenna - Elevation and

I think you'll find that for a short vertical radiator and a single
counterpoise wire the maximum radiation is in the direction of the wire. EZNEC
confirms this and I've tested it with a friend the length of California on 40 m
where with the counterpoise pointed away from him I could barely copy him,
flipping the wire 180° brought his signal up significantly. He saw the same
thing on his end.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Display

2019-07-07 Thread Brian Hunt

Jim -

I'm not sure this will help but here goes

I have KX2 SN 11xx with current firmware loaded:  uC 2.89, DSP 1.52.
I've reviewed all the update information and there doesn't appear to be
any changes that would modify the behavior of the DISP function.  Mine
works as described on page 23 of the KX2 manual Rev. A5 dated May 28,
2916: Special VFO B Displays -- Tap the DISP button and rotate the OFS/B
knob to display the various parameters available.  The "Log" function
was added in uC 2.77 and isn't covered in my manual version but works as
described in the Firmware Notes for that release.

You could consider reloading the firmware fresh from the Elecraft site
or call Elecraft support and pose the question to them.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 running warm even at very low power out

During transmit your PA current will increase even with no power out due
to biasing of the final PA devices.  On my KX2 current draw goes from

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 as a remote-controlled tuner

2018-11-03 Thread Brian Hunt
I've been looking at this very issue as part of a project to QRO on the
lower bands.  I currently have an MFJ autotuner at the end of a 130 ft
coax run out to the garden.  My low band doublet is fed with a balun and
ladder line from there.  It's really impractical to run the AUX cabling
out and back as indicated in the KAT500 manual.  But it may be practical
to run a keying line out and back and a serial line as Wayne indicated.
Would the key line need buffering with that long a run?  A total of 5
wires required. A CAT-5 cable could provide a twisted pair for each
signal line to avoid RFI.  Power for the KAT500 could be provided using
a bias-T arrangement as I do now.  Any other thoughts/considerations?

With a remote KAT500, it is still necessary to connect the AUX cables

Alternately, if used in the basic mode, the Keying cable must go first
to the KAT500 and from the KAT500 on to the amplifier.  That allows
the KAT500 to prevent keying the amplifier while tuning.

Re: [Elecraft] Winlink Express + K3S

2018-10-11 Thread Brian Hunt
When calling to connect with winmor you will always get the timeout
message until the called station responds.  Once it connects the error
message should go away.  It drove me nuts for a while. :-) FWIW, I use
the CAT command option for PTT so I don't have to remember to set the
PTT-KEY menu.  Seems to work fine.  Note:  K3 and external USB sound

After some poking around and trying different things, I set up the K3S to
do PTT on RTS, made sure the TX delay was as short as possible, configured
Winlink to use RTS for PTT, and as far as I can tell, the switching is very
fast... but Winlink is still not happy about it. I tried VOX as well, but
it seemed like latency should be less with RTS for PTT.

I used to get the Timeout error on my KX3 on the first transmit, but
subsequent transmissions always worked fine.

Has anyone had more success with Winlink with the K3s and with avoiding
this Timeout message?

A recent update to Win10 - v1803 - changed the permissions and security
surrounding "devices" including the microphone. You have to change setting to
allow the "microphone" to access apps since Windows thinks all sound cards are
microphones. This little "upgrade" drove me nuts for days before someone posted
the solution here.

This may well be your problem. GL!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Strange Power Output Problem

2018-05-12 Thread Brian Hunt
I ran into this today too, different frequencies though. I recently installed
the KBPF3 module and have it enabled full time. I think what happened is the
VFO-A frequency sets the BPF segment to be used and with the wide split, it's
not the right one for the VFO-B TX frequency to use. Therefore you don't get
enough drive through to the amplifier stages. The K3 will not switch BPF
segments to go between RX and TX states. I got an ERR:TXG indicating something
was afoul in the BPF setup.

I tried to set the KBPF3 to 'not installed' but botched it since I didn't
remember you had to cycle K3 power to reconfigure that option. By then NSS had
faded into the noise. Oh well, got 'em on one band.

Since there is no RTS or DTR line into the KX2 you can't send CW or PTT that

using the KEY macro command but you have to edit the NIMM+ .mc files to do so.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 powers off when after several minutes of 12W carrier

2018-03-28 Thread Brian Hunt
For folks who run lots of high duty cycle modes, Elecraft is now recommending
'thermal pads' between the LPA transistors and the bottom cover. I found this
out when I was doing some mods to my 10yo K3 and the instructions said to
install them and I didn't have 'em. You can get them from Elecraft, not
expensive.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 internal connectors

2018-03-23 Thread Brian Hunt
My K3 is also from 2010, April as I recall. I recently did the component mods
you mentioned except for the KREF3 and KPOD resistors. Also I added the general
coverage BPF board with 472 kHz in mind. I added the new synthesizer as soon as
it came out. It all went very well and only took a few hours, stretching it out
to prolong the fun of getting my fingers into my factory built K3. :-)

Add to your list the suggested thermal pads under the LPA transistors. These
are recommended if you do a lot of 100% duty cycle transmitting.

Good luck & 73,

Re: [Elecraft] 630m on K3/S

2018-03-14 Thread Brian Hunt
A properly equipped K3 or K3S is a good receiver on 630m and as Don pointed out
will produce 0.5 mW from the Xverter interface. I've made the mods and checked
the output on my 10 year old K3 and it's good to go.
There are several amplifier designs on the web that will give 50-100 watts
output and I think a few commercially available amps as well. Probably some
adaptation needed for the K3 output tho.
The real bugaboo is the antenna. A resonant small multi-turn loop is good for
receive. The transmit antenna needs a big hi-Q loading coil and as much wire as
you can get into the air. That's my sticking point at the moment.
I think it's a real opportunity to get back to basics.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S and Winkeyer

You can use DTR keying as described in the thread or you can use the "KEY"
macro in N1MM+ via the serial port CAT interface. I use DTR with my K3 but
since DTR keying isn't implemented on the KX2, I use the macro. When using the

Re: [Elecraft] Right paddle on my KXPD2 issue

2018-02-11 Thread Brian Hunt
I have experienced this too. Cleaning the contact with a small strip of paper
helps for a while. I'm wondering if the contact closure current may be too low
to overcome the slight surface corrosion that develops over time.

When not in use I store the KXPD2 in the mesh pocket of the CS-40 case.

Adjusting the contact spacing narrower allows less travel and seems to make the
problem worse, widening it makes it better but doesn't eliminate the problem.
